Vibrate Rattle? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just recently I started hearing the back cover around where the sim card is begin to rattle when the phone vibrates. Its extremely loud
Has anyone else had this problem? Suggestions on how to fix it?
Cheers

I put a folded up paper towel under the back cover haha it works

Yeah I'm not sure what I'm going to do... I really is pissing me off to be honest!
Any other thoughts?!

I have yet to find where the rattle is coming from...
If hold the case tight around the top part of the screen, it wont make the rattle either. I'm thinking about taking the phone in and RMA'ing it.
I've tried to put a paper towel behind the battery cover as well as a business card lol
Anyone else have any suggestions?

maybe get a tiny precision screwdriver and tighten all the little screws on the phone. I think there are some under the battery cover. here's the threa that will show where they are -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=740022

Check the little door that covers the usb port. Check it in the open and closed position.

I dig up an old post about the rattle and another user suggested that I try and remove the SD card and at the time when I tried it, it worked which I thought was odd because I had already checked that once before.
Regardless, the noise came back and AT&T said they will replace the phone but I'm too lazy to drive to the store so I think I'm going to try and tighten everything first... hopefully if all fails it wont void the warranty

[Q] Loose Battery???

Hi everyone,
I had seen a thread somewhere that someone mentioned that their battery was loose inside the phone and that the could hear it rattle around but I cannot seem to find that thread now.
I too have this issue. When I shake the phone for example I can hear the battery rattle around inside and when I take off the cover I can move the battery a bit from side to side. Can anyone tell me why this is?
I KNOW this is NOT a fake battery as I watched the store clerk open my box and build my phone from BRAND NEW and I have done the comparison on the batteries as well. It just seems that the hole for my battery is a bit too big orthe battery is a bit too small.
Can anyone tell me what I can or should do about this issue?
yes, i recall that topic as well
so you are not hallucinating
no idea where it went
if you do have this issue with the phone + battery, i'll suggest you take it back to bell for an exchange
they should be able to tell quite clearly this is not normal when they compare to the other phones they have
I stuck a business card, cut in half, between the battery and the cover. Seems to have filled the space in just enough to make a tight fit, my battery is no longer loose.
For now I have wedged a piece of paper between the battery and the hole and it has stopped the battery from moving as well but this should not have to be done I am sure.
@allgamer - I would take it back but I purchased it from Future Shop and the location I bought it has not received any new shipments in since and that was a month ago. The concensus from the Bell Stores here is the same as well stating that they are all on backorder.
I will keep my ears and eyes open on this and when they do have some new stock I will be bringing it to their attention for sure.
Yiann, even i have this problem with my bell i9000. I just found out and was looking if anyone else had this issue. I will take it in when i get a chance and will let you know. Did u get a chance to get it replaced or how did u fix this issue?
Thx

+1 i too have the same issue. piece of folded paper does the trick, but like all the above posts this shouldn't be necessary...

I have this issue too.. the battery is way too loose. It must be a common manufacture error.
Same problem
i also have a loose battery in my gti9000.....even after wedging a piece of folded paper in between the battery and the surrounding loose area and making it fit quite tightly, the phone still makes a rattling noise when it vibrates....though when i hold the phone in my hand, it doesn't make that rattling sound...wondering if it cud be something other than the battery...

Does anyones incredible s battery cover squeak?

I noticed that when I pressed on it slighty there was a slight squeak noise that came from the casing. I had recently bought a replacement cover and it was fine and than it did the same thing. What is this? Is it normal for most incredible s devices because I have heard other ppl had the same problem. I dont care as much because I have a case for mine but what about you guys??? Any squeaking issues??? LOL

Yes, same here, mines pretty bad actually!
I've got a case on top and its a tight fit, so it doesn't squeak.
Bad design flaw IMO.

Arrgh, it brings out the OCD in me LOL. But I have a case so it isnt bad, and its only in one little corner and I have to press on it so I geuss its not that bad. Its really a shame because I love this phone and thats its only flaw.
The same case here too.
For me its at the corner. I guess its due to the pressure while we want to unlock the phone, we tend to press the back cover first before hittin the power button.
Ive got a red IS, dunno if i can get another replacable one or not...
P.S I aint using any case or anything, its as fresh as outta the box XD
I believe the squeak is caused by some empty space existing between the phone and the back cover. Stick a strip of duct tape on the inside part of the back cover where it squeaks. It should solve the squeaking problem.
Mine squeaks really badly around the volume buttons. putting a case on fixes it though.

Yep mine squeaks too, the corner near the camera.
Squeaky
No, mine has not had any squeaks. The USB port does rattle a bit. But not enough to get up in arms about. I find the fit and finish surprisingly good considering the chassis seems to be all plastic.

Isnt that not going to be good for the battery? Overheating it or something? I am kind of weary about putting things inside the phone
yeah it has been discussed tht the cover does squeek, either you have a case that is able to press on the phone good enough to prevent it from squeeking or you put fillers inside the phone to stop the squeeking

How do you think that would overheat the phone, exactly? It's not like phones have vents or fans that could be blocked by the tape.
Lol I don't know I'm just weary about stuff when it comesbto my phone maybe ill try that

Of the ones that squeak (including mine), how many people have removed the back cover? Mine didn't start to squeak until the third time in pulled the battery cover off. I have noticed that on one side there is a small gap along one side more so than the other.
Mine definitely squeaked as if the cover was loose. It's not much of an issue with a case though.
Yep. Mine squeaks.
Top right (Near the camera & power button) and bottom left (near the home button). Intrigues me that it's like a diagonal thing. oh well.
I lold.
Don't really care though. xD
Just send them an email with some proof, some pictures and maybe a short video which you can clearly hear the sqeezing.
I did that and they send me a new cover

I was able to fix this once by somehow properly placing the back cover back on but when the next time I removed it and placed it back, I again started to have the squeak so I used some plastic tape, placed it on the side of the back as well as the top, placed the back cover back and no more squeaking
I had squeaking on the right top and side.

Same here. Mine started squeaking after I removed the back cover for the third time as well. For me it's on the right side, smack in the middle of the device (where my middle finger rests when I hold it in my left hand )

MicroSD Card stuck in Dell Streak 7 :\

I know, I did something really stupid. I put an MicroSD card in the slot where the Sim Card is supposed to go and now it's stuck. I can't see it.. so I have no idea what to do.
Please help, I have no idea how to get it out.
Can you see it at all? I believe the sd card bay has enough clearence so that a microsd could get lodged inside the body of the device itself. There's nothing besides the tray itself to stop something like that. (which is kinda crazy if something exactly like this happens)
Nope I cannot see it at all :\
I'm not concerned about the sD card itself, I'm just worried that it'll mess up the functionality of the tablet.
The only real risk is that the pins on it might short something out, or a very remote chance it might cause one of the connectors to detach.
You could try and keep shaking it until it falls out or carefully dissassemble it and get your card. I'd personally try the former, the open part of the tray is the one nearest the display, so hold it display faceing down and bay facing down and hope for the best.
I have tried shaking it out for the past couple of minutes with no results.
There is no rattling sound however, so is that a good thing?
There are no visible screws of any sort for me to take it apart, so if you know of a a way that I can do so, I'd greatly appreciate it if you would share it with me.
If it's not rattleing then it might be jammed up against something, as far as damaging the internals that's a good thing. As long as you dont let it rattle around inside it, it shouldnt be a huge issue.
I made a guide on dissassembling it, it's around here somewhere. But tl;dr the first step is held together by glue and it's a huge hassle to dissassemble and reassemble unless you dont care about casuing cosmetic damage.

Are there any other options that you know of that I can try?
But nonetheless, thank you for helping

How exactly did you manage to get it out? I've bent a paper clip out so that it was long enough for me to stick it in there and I tried to press it down and slide it out with no results - I don't even know if I was actually touching the card or not :\
If you could provide some details on how you were able to get it to pop out, that'd be great.
Thanks

Should I break the tab off the back cover?

I really hate that tab . But if I break it off... will the back cover stay on and I can just easily remove it from now on without the tool/pin/pen/ect.?
Try it? A replacement cover is pretty cheap. Just make sure you order one first.
Report back once done.
The whole purpose of asking was to try it without requiring a new back cover

You know how to recognize a pioneer, right? They're the ones laying face-down on the prairie with arrows in their backs.

Same here. I just got a D4 yesterday. Tried to get the back off to insert my memory card, failed with a pen and with a paper clip (no key, or whatever they call it, was included), took it to Verizon where they opened it up. They seemed surprised that that was all I wanted, haha. Didn't actually buy anything. Just walked out with the back cover and phone in separate hands. Inserted the card when I got home, searched to see if anyone had ever just broken that damned thing off, found this thread, did it myself...success! The back cover now works just like any normal one. It's as secure as the cover of my LG Revolution, or more, and no more hassle or ridiculous key to keep track of. And actually, I think because of the way the little hooks slide in, it's less likely to go flying off when dropped than the Revo's is.
You don't need a key anything to poke in the hole. Just finger nails to push along the top seam. Cover comes off quite easily.
Have you tried just pressing with all your fingers on the center of the cover and sliding down? I was at verizon today and thats what the lady who helped me did. Works just fine. I dont think ill ever stick anything in the hole again.
Sent from my DROID4 using xda app-developers app
I wonder if the precision with which the back is made isn't great so that different phones vary in the ease of opening. For me it didn't matter where I applied pressure, it just wouldn't open. And believe me, I tried it everywhere, and held in one hand, two hands, laying flat on a table, etc. But yeah, at least on mine it doesn't seem to need the tab at all. The back is still very secure without it.

Tiny bulge under SIM slot after 6 days

I just noticed this evening that I have a little bulge under my SIM slot. The rubber protrudes about 1mm, and is about 1/4" long. It happens to be exactly above where my ring finger rests when I hold my phone, as if my finger (over the past 6 days) has forced the separation. It's nothing a bumper or case won't fix -- but I don't have a bumper or a case.
Hopefully it's an isolated case **He naively says starting at the screen lift on his Nexus 7**

Looks like the rubber band warping. Not sim slot.
I ordered a nexus 4 and all I got was bo.
Yeah, that looks like a clear defect. I'd definitely have Google replace it.
I've had mine for over a week. It doesn't have that issue. Thank God.
That's a definite defect. Get a replacement ASAP.

Hi
Might just be clip on the back cover that hasn't engaged. Can you clip it back in by squeezing the back at that point against the front?

Nah, it's surprisingly stubborn. I've put quite a bit of pressure trying to "pop" it back into place to no avail. I really do hope this isn't a mass problem. I'm going to do an RMA (also have the rattle & hiss). The next one I'll have a case from Day 1.

The rattle is just the plastic lens in the camera related to auto focus, a lot of phones have the same rattle, search for "camera rattle". Hiss is caused by the DC-DC power converters in the phone, it's a known issue with low power equipment such as mobile phones, just do a search for the terms "dc dc converter audible noise". These are not faults, just side effects of the technology that most people will ignore or not notice.
Such is the variable nature of these components you may get another phone that appears better or just the same or even worse, but very likely the rattle will always be there as that is just how the cameras are at rest with nothing powering the magnetic servo of the lens.
Obviously the bulge in the side of the case shouldn't be there, certainly a reason to get it replaced.
Regards
Phil
OP - I finally received my phone yesterday and noticed that I too have the same little bulge. Mine is on the opposite side of the phone. It does look like it's just a clip that didn't engage. However, like you, I tried to push it in to no avail. Since there is nothing else wrong with my phone at all I am holding off on sending it in for an RMA because I'd be afraid to get a phone with worse defects. This one is so minimal that I can live with it. Especially since I REALLY have to look for it to see it.
With that said, I'm contemplating just removing the backing, which I have read is super easy (just remove the two screws at the bottom and the sim tray and it pops off). I was thinking about doing this to inspect that little section to see if something is just protruding a tiny bit that can be easily corrected. I'm going to wait until I see others have successfully removed the backing before attempting it myself.
Just wanted to let you know that you are not alone.
UPDATE: I called Play Support and told the rep about the issue. He said I'm not the first person to have the small bulge and recommended an RMA since it's considered a defect so I went that route.
I returned a Nexus 7 that had the same problem. There was no screen lift, so I hesitated, but after taking the back off and seeing that internal components were pressing the bezel outwards (and the screen had been attached onto the already-bent bezel, leaving the bulgey spot without any adhesive to speak of even if I could get the bezel straight) I decided I didn't want to wait for dust to start creeping in and took it back. Glad I did, my replacement was perfect. Hope you get the same result with a new N4 (whenever they get around to having a new one for you :| ).
Damn I have the buldge to Don't know if i'm just noticing or if it's been there all along. I've decided i can live with the tiny amount of hiss in the ear piece and the camera rattle (which i've been told and believe is normal and not a defect). Can't decide if this is something that'll worsen over time or just live with this in fear of getting a device with worse issues. DOH

Don't fret. I called Google about this issue since I have it too. The rep told me he had a few reports of this and recommended an RMA for it. It won't get worse but if it does bother you just call and have them send you a new one. The process is really easy. I've done this in the past with other Nexus devices as well. They send you a new one within 3-5 business days and put an auth charge on your card for the full price of the phone. Then, when you get the new phone you put the old one in the box and send it back to them. When they receive the phone they remove the auth hold. This way you are never left without a phone.
Anyone opened theirs up?
