[Q] Any of you own a tablet? - LG Optimus 2x

Hey all,
Second Q of the day from me!!
Any of you have a tablet that you tether to your O2X?
Been interested in getting a Playbook
Wondered if anyone had this or other tablets and could post their experiences. I have an ipod touch and a laptop, so just want one that can be used when going away etc so don't want a 3G version of anything.
Cheers

wireless tethering worked well for me with my O2X running CM7. I don't imagine it would be any different with another WiFi capable device.

I have an iPad 2 (dont hate me) and it works brilliantly with that. only used it a few times and its works well. I have had it not work too well once but that was because I didnt have very good signal on my phone so it was just really slow.

Dont worry don't hate you.
I'm just thinking it's quite big and bulky compare to some of the 7" tablets (playbook included). 7" ones feel much more comfortable and usable to me

anyone tried them cheap android tablets off ebay

surely they gotta be worth £80

The iPad feels big but the iPad 2 feels much better IMO. The 7" tablets feel too small for me. The keypads and just the the screen feels too compact - but I suppose it depends on what you want to use it for so I got mine as a basic replacement for my ageing and dieng laptop.

I have a Samsung galaxy tab 7, great tab. Also 3g capable, but I mostly tether with my 2x. At first I thought that 7 inch would be too small, but it isn't. I can easily take it with me in my coat. For me that's a huge advantage.

Thanks for the post. I've got the big clunky laptop so I'm after the portable 7" i think. Means i can slip it in a bag when going away and not break my back in the process when 9 times out of 10 its just for a big email / internet screen

lol ok I take your word for it
I'll up the budget, but I dont wanna pay to much as its for my 8yr old son, he will be man handling it quite a lot, any ideas on half decent one mid price range????

Maybe if for a kid resistive would be better, as it'll take more of a beating being plastic

How do you justify using a tablet instead of a laptop?

I mean tablets are generally more expensive, require a lame data plan, have a barely usable keyboard, and are much more limited in terms of games than say a laptop? I mean all in all I can't find a plus side as to why a tablet beats even the worst laptop I own. I just wanted to get some input as to how a tablet could be better than a laptop... my laptop is barely larger and is actually lighter than most tablets so I can't find a reason to justify buying any except the 5 inch streak (due to it also being a phone)
They're more portable; you have to remember.that tablets are made for consuming data, not inputting.
That makes them great for pretty much any leisurely activity you can think of, but they aren't made to actually do work on.
Waking up and having one in bed; going to the coffee shop and relaxing; using while wwatching tv; these are all possibly better with a tablet.
Hell I have an ipad and I use it for every one of those; I pretty much only use my computer for typing papers, downloading things, and printing documents.
Captivate 2.2.1 Paragon
Well I guess I splurged and bought the Adamo XPS and in terms of portability I'd say they're about equal. I wake up with it next to me and dont even use my TV anymore thanks to netflix on this thing. I mean in my opinion you get all the function of both a laptop and a tablet on a good laptop... I can't think of a thing an ipad can do that my laptop cant and can think of a million things the other way around.

Agreed, it's weird that the keyboard doesn't go down completely.

I've been thinking of getting a macbook air 11 inch cause it's all the portability of a tablet but can still do computing. I'm having trouble myself finding a reason to get a tablet because I have a smartphone. Just want one cause of the cool factor. Not others thinking I'm cool, but I think tablets are cool.

As always there is a golden compromise.
I was looking for a tablet like the ZTE Light or Samsung G. Tab but couldn't justify splashing out the money they cost.
Also without an extra (expensive) contract with a provider they would be useless.
Can't see much usefulness in those cheap China made Android tablets without 3G/4G connection, that's flooding the market.
So I stick with my compromise between Laptop and Tablet. A Netbook from 2009.
The Eee PC 1005HA have more power than a Android tablet and longer battery time 3-7 hours, dependent power saving or performance setting for battery power (the batteries have been used daily for two years).
Also Win7starter is a far more powerful OS than any phone-OS.
well....i am trying to justify getting a tablet by selling off my HP multitouch convertible tablet TX2.
it's almost 4 years old, heavy and runs VERY hot.
i was thinking to get a BLACKBERRY playbook instead of this.
am a student and need to use the laptop for presentations(that too office 2010), extensively use word, and bla bla bla.
should i sell the laptop or just buy the tablet without letting my laptop off??....AM TORN APART AND CANNOT MAKE A DECESION ON MY OWN. please help mighty, insightful men

He can RDP onto the TS server in the office, or his PC at home and use Windows, or just use Android so has the best of both worlds.

Apart from that it's a bloody awful device!
If you hold it portrait it feels top heavy like it wants to fall out of your hand, turn it through 180 and it still feels top heavy.
Apps are expensive, £6-8 for an RDP client which is free on other systems?
£5 for Angry Birds!
It takes at least 5 minutes to turn on.
I spent a day using one and within minutes realised why they just aren't selling.
point taken....but as am from India and have a budget constraint, there are few options for me.
kindle fire, touchpad, color are still not available @ India
except for the playbook, the only tablet coming my way is the galaxy tab(the very prehistoric first one)
i am thinking to start saving more to get the LENOVO thinkpad.

How about the ASUS transformer?

DS7 users, you can be happy with it. The G-Slate wont replace you.

Hey all, just got done testing the G-Slate out. 599$ with 2 yr contract. (Ouch!)
Now, while it IS bigger, resolution and handling with honeycomb is WOW. Wont lie there. There is one feature that is HORRIBLE!
I tested out the new 3d video recording ability. OUCH! It has 2 cameras to take pictures in 3d. However you do gotta wear the glasses. It uses the old Red-Blue Glasses trick for 3d. I will tell you this.. HORRIBLE. People look 3d. Items and backgrounds.. not really. Also the quality sucks. But now for the worst part. I watched the video 2 times.. It put a eye strain on me something bad.. to where I am still feeling it hours later. Like if it was a cross mix of queasy and where my eyes feel unadjusted. Never had this before using the re-blue glasses, so it has to be the way the tablet does it. Also there is no way youd even WANNA watch anything with the red/blue tints to be honest. Doesnt look good at all.
Also the 4G ant seems to suck... The whole time it was stuck in 2G mode while my DS7 was in 4G. So sounds like something is worse on this hardware.
Anyways, I feel still after seeing the slate. That my DS7 is still ftw. =) Passing on that info to you all.
Thanks!
I am waiting for ASUS transformer to have a hands on.
I sold my xoom and decided to wait for the samsung.. its thinner and lighter than ipad 2 and out of all the tabs so far is the sexiest IMO. I know a lot of people dont like samsung but I think they hit the mark on this one. I mean all the other companies went ahead with their tablet designs after the ipad 2 came out. Samsung said.. umm no.. now ours isnt working.. too big, too expensive. So they went back and redesigned it. It's not MUCH thinner than ipad 2 or MUCH lighter but they did it just to beat ipad2 in that respect. The galaxy tab 2 would have been out by now if it hadnt been for the ipad 2. trust me.. I have major tablet itch and I'm holding out.. because I dont think I'll be disappointed.
Other thing. The Slate is bigger, yes, also resolution higher, but I dont think it makes it "better" reason being, the DS7 is perfect for thumb keyboarding, gaming and so. Has the right screen res and size for holding it like a handheld and not feel like a library book.

Should I keep my Streak 7 Wifi? Contemplating returning...(kinda urgent)

I already have a T-Mobile G2 (with CM7 installed), and after playing around with the Streak 7 about three days (bought it for $200 at Staples)...I don't know if it was worth the purchase. I still have a little over a week to return it, and I'm highly considering it.
I tried using it both with the stock Froyo (bloatware removed) and with dj_steve's Honeycomb...but in both cases, my phone can do the same thing pretty much about as fast, and more serious uses (like gaming or web browsing) are a more convenient on my 11" laptop (Alienware M11x). Not to mention, I do intend to switch to Sprint (for unlimited data), and I'll likely be getting the SGII or Evo3D, so even if I don't have a dual-core Android device now, I will soon.
I mean, it's nice that it fits in my pocket (even if just barely), but even with the Wifi tweak for battery life, it's not as long as I'd like, and the screen quality isn't that great when in portrait mode.
Maybe I just haven't found the right uses or apps for it...
-I don't commute much, and even when I do, I can't imagine any legitimate uses when offline (since I'm not using my phone as a hotspot on the go) since I don't read much, and I prefer watching videos and playing games at home on my computer
-I'll probably be getting rid of my car soon, so using it as a GPS/media player for it won't work
-When around the house, I prefer checking email and whatnot on my computer
I'd say the only real use I'd see out of it is if I were to get a laid-back security job where I could just bring it there and play around or something, but at that point I'd probably be more inclined to get a bigger tablet (maybe with a keyboard/dock, like the Transformer) since I wouldn't be too worried about having to fit it in my pocket.
So...any opinions/suggestions? More specifically, any app recommendations (preferably for Froyo) that I should look into (not necessarily ones from the Market)? The Honeycomb ROM was a bit too buggy for me (stuff not resizing properly, freezing/rebooting with certain apps, etc), I'd rather wait for an official Honeycomb.
Its all about personal preference. Don't care for notebooks... too unwealdy. I like something that fits in my hand but isn't tiny like my phone. I also have a gaming desktop so I'm covered there. I like the pad with honeystreak 2.0 for casual surfing and gaming when I'm chillin on the couch or in the car when I'm not driving.

To be truthful, I don't have a need for the tablet either. Life was fine with my laptop. The only reason I got the Dell Streak 7, and this is my first tablet, is for casual web surfing and casual gaming. The 7 inch screen is perfect for this, the phone is too small and the 10 inch is too big for my taste.
I have found you can talk yourself into or out of anything. I have had mine 3 days and and already been on all 3 roms a couple more than once. I cant put mine down. Im a atay at home dad, own this, the 5, and an ipad and this is cool. Juat the right size. I read, watch movies, edited a document and played some fun tegra games like riptide. All for 200.00. Im very pleased

Honestly I own 4 tablets I kept getting different ones expecting some other wonderful thing to happen but in reality. They are all the same.
I have a rooted cyanogen mod 7 nook color, a elocity a7 terga dual core,a dell streak 7, and a acer iconia a500. and you know what the high end iconia can do that the rooted nook color cant? NOTHING thats right any app you want torun or anything you want to do you can do on any android device period.
They all do the same internet, they all do the same apps, games, same face book, twitter. blah blah blah blah.
ONly differences in any of them is screen and speed. and to be honest my gloified nook color ereader turned tablet is just as fast as and terga dual core. sure i am sure you can get some extra frame rates or some other spec that in the real world no one notices to go a bit faster on a more expensive unit but who cares really.
I found the best deciding factor on tablets is size,(10 or 7) screen clarity, and battery life.
your either a 10 inch tablet person or a 7 inch one me im a 7 inch fan (lol no ego here). battery life again too alot of people make this into a big deal but as long as it runs till i go to bed who cares i just plug it in till morning and go again who needs a tablet to run for 7 days with out plugging it in anyway.
and for screen well thats all relative lets use the acer iconia and the transforer for example the transformer uses 16 million colors and a ips screen but its viewing angles suck. now the acer uses 165 thusand colors and jsut a regular screen but its viewing angles rock so is there a difference? the human eye only sees like 150k colors at one time anyway so whats the use of a 16 million color screen?
Long and short you need to be happy with what you buy. but you sound like I use to be it just kills you not to have or try everyone of them and no matter what one you get your gonna wish you had the other. I bet you go through phones like water too. my frinds are like that they cant stand to have a phone longer then a month and they are off getting another one.
But truth be told they all do the same thing really they do... the new 700 dollar droid does nothing the old first gen droid cant do it just does it faster is all so is it worth it?
Doesn't sound like a good fit for you. I say sell it on CL for what you paid. It could make someone's day. Someone who would lay a little love and appreciation on it.
if you want to unload it for $200 i'll take it off your hands. the streak 7 is why i joined, actually rejoined this forum

Are you still happy with your Nexus 7?

Hi everybody!
I'm about to get a tablet. Not sure yet which one, but the Nexus 7 is definitely one of my targets.
So I was wondering, if you, Nexus 7 owners, are still happy and would still recommend it.
If not, let me know why and what you'd recommend instead.
Looking forward to your answers.
Kind regards and greetings from Germany.
Yup still love it. My first tablet tho. I'm very on the go and 7" is perfection. Battery lasts me most of the day playing galaxy on fire 2 and streaming shows from xfinity. It runs super smooth and touch seems more sensitive than other devices. Sometimes I have an issue where the screen won't respond but turning the screen on and off seems to fix that.

I think what might help inform your decision is what you intend to use the tablet for.
The prime example being, if you need a lot of local storage, this might not be the device for you as it has no removable SD card slot. (although with rooting and USB OTG you can mount external flash devices)
If you're after a great overall tablet for consuming content, I can't think of a better option at this price. I'm virtually addicted to mine (much to my wife's chagrin).
Its the best. Get one ASAP! Device is works very well. Best bang for buck.
Love it. It's a fantastic device and the form factor rocks as far as i'm concerned.
still like it? its been less than a month lol
ive had 2 defective ones and a 3rd is being sent to me, and i still like it.
Absolutely no regrets, having the power of Tegra and a stock Android install really shows just how powerful the platform can be. And for the price it really is quality piece of kit, the only downsides to my mind are the lack of expandable storage and no HDMI out. But storage can be solved quickly and very cheaply with an USB OTG cable, the HDMI out will soon be solved through Miracast, and the nearest competitors with these features cost almost double the price.
If you're in the market for a tablet, there's really no competition for the Nexus 7 right now unless money is no object.

Well come next Month we find out if Apple are gonna launch an Ipad mini, but the question is will you sell your Nexus 7 to buy one if the specs are decent & it has a Retina display plus if the price lands around what the Nexus 7 16GB is atm.
I have no doubt in my mind there will be plenty of Nexus 7's on Ebay if an Ipad Mini does come about next month.
I personally won't be selling mine as im not a fan of Apple never have been, but i reckon some on here will even if they don't admit to it right now.

There's no way Apple will sell an iPad mini at a loss. They have no qualms being the most expensive solution on the market, that's practically their business model. It will be nowhere close to $199. $349 is the lowest I see them pricing an 8GB model.
I love mine, and I don't think Apple is going to fight in the pricing weeds with N7. Lowest the iPAD mini will cost is $249 or maybe even $299
Love it. Perfect form factor for me too. Always felt the iPad was too big for my usage, felt awkward using it out and about. This thing bridged the gap nicely.

Then go for it. You won't regret it.
Yes, I get more happy the longer I have it. Now after saying that I have to say that screen size is a big factor in deciding what is best for you. I've gone through Acer Iconia A500 10.1 inch, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 inch (still have), iPad New (3) 9.7 inch and now the Nexus 7, 7 inch.
I definitely take the 7 out with me more often than I did the others.
I would visit a Best Buy or some other place that sells tablets that has them in different sized to get a feel for what is good for you and if you decide 7 is the best you should get the Nexus 7. I'm just saying that because I spent a lot of money trying to find my perfect size and should have visited a store in the first place to know my perfect size before going through all those other tablets.
I have the loose screen and it doesn't bother me one bit. It's a great companion for a daily commuter.
I can't put this thing down. It's the only tablet I use anymore.

yup everytime its in my hands I say mmmmmmmmmmmmmannnnn Im glad i got this thing :good:

N7 vs Ipad 3 - which to get ?!

Hey XDA community, I've been coming and going alot lately but I got tons of headaches off this so i thought let's see what you guys think,
I was offered a free ipad 3 from my brother, against getting a N7 from my out pocket, I has an ipod 4g and HTC explorer, so am not a fan or a
hater for any of those platforms actually I love them both equally plus, they are almost identical when it comes to apps availabilty, I know the ipad
might have a slight edge in frames in that area, now onto the most important part, I'll use it mainly for ebooks reading as am studying Comp.
Science and am a gamer web browsing .. ofc ! ( again no hate for the 7-in screen ) and please don't point to the "issues massacre" that's going on
about the N7 althought RMA is not an option for me if anything wrong goes on ...
long post, sry
What's with the crazy font and centering? Makes your post difficult to read.
Get the nexus 7. Compared to the iPad, n7 is just more convenient to hold and type in terms of weight and size and more portable. The size is good enough for reading also at least for me.

I was offered a free ipad 3 from my brother, against getting a N7 from my out pocket, I has an ipod 4g and HTC explorer, so am not a fan or a hater for any of those platforms actually I love them both equally plus, they are almost identical when it comes to apps availabilty, I know the ipad might have a slight edge in frames in that area, now onto the most important part, I'll use it mainly for ebooks reading as am studying Comp. Science and am a gamer web browsing .. ofc ! ( again no hate for the 7-in screen ) and please don't point to the "issues massacre" that's going on about the N7 althought RMA is not an option for me if anything wrong goes on ... long post, sry

Can you get both?
If in your position I would probably try and decide which size device would suit me better.... The bigger iPad is less portable and harder to use as a regular e-reader, but might be better for browsing and textbooks with diagrams and pictures.. The Nexus is more portable and a great all rounder (I am doing an IT degree and have no problems reading my textbooks.
I personally detest Apple's business practices and would never buy one of their devices, but their products are solid and you probably can't go wrong either way.

What's with the crazy font and centering? Makes your post difficult to read.

lol thought about it but I thought of an X360 right away :silly:
you've got a good point, reading text about source code might get ugly on the N7 while going back and forth ...
about the "solid" thing, I've done a jailbreak on one of these babies, and the thing got re-springing every once and a while, while the N7 actually begs you to customize it lol
I've got a tickle though .. are you experiencing any lifting or anything ? since u've got an N7

Get the nexus 7. Compared to the iPad, n7 is just more convenient to hold and type in terms of weight and size and more portable. The size is good enough for reading also at least for me.

I agree as far as the size goes. I have both sizes, and I'm loving the 7" form factor. So much easier to handle when lounging around, and still big enough for my uses.

Yeah, take the free ipad3. Though, I love my nexus 7. If it was free nexus versus ipad3 the nexus has now closed the gap I'd easily say take the free nexus and you'd be happy.

That's not a biased response at all.
@OP- I own both, and both are great devices in their own regard. The screen on the iPad is unparalleled, it has a ton of awesome games, and a bunch of great productivity apps. The Nexus 7 has the customizability, and a great form factor, plus all of Google's great cloud services. I take my N7 with me, and use the iPad at home. I think the 7" is a much better size for portability, and it's the perfect size for gaming, but unfortunately the iPad just trumps Android with the shear number of high quality games available. The N7 is also a better size for reading too. If it comes down to getting an iPad 3 for free or actually buying the N7, then I would take the iPad no question. If you were going to have to spring for either, then it would be a toss up and I would lean towards the N7. If I was in your shoes though, I would take the free iPad and buy an N7
Screw it.. am getting this freebie, then I'll re-think about this whole thing WHY THE HELL SHOULD I SAY NO TO A FREE IPAD !!
Thanks all for you're hot replies

Good choice. Then you can sell it and buy 3 Nexus 7's with the money. Keep one in your car, one at home, and one at work!

Take the free ipad, sell it, buy a brand new nexus7, and use the remaining on accessories, apps, and a nice dinner.

If you need GPS then the iPad3 is useless if it's the WIFI only version since it doesn't have GPS. Take the free iPad3, sell it and buy two Nexus 7's.
I know for me personally, the ipad is too big. I like the 7 inch form factor, and the nexus 7 is designed to for portability and convenience. Just depends what your looking for I suppose. Honestly I'm not sure why anyone needs a bigger tablet but that's just me.

Ironically I sold my iPad 3 earlier today.
Initially I bought the Nexus 7 in addition to the iPad but since owning it I just haven't put it down. Yes the iPad has more polished apps but the sheer power, flexibility and portability of the N7 can't be beaten. I found I simply couldn't justify keeping the iPad!
