I have tried many solutions posted to similar issues in this forum and none are working...
I reflashed the radio
I updated the radio
I also changed roms
I updated google maps...
I installed google voice
I turned the GPS on and off
wiped data and cache
also restarted the phone...
tried indoors and outdoors...
Google maps gets my location fine, but just when I click on navigate it loads and on the bottom of the screen it says "searching for GPS..." and never finds it, the GPS satellite icon shows activity...GPS Test says GPS on...I do not see any other activity at all on the screen though....
this is weird...any ideas? anyone else getting this "error"?
Do you have a data plan or other network connection while trying to get a GPS fix? If you don't, then it can take a REALLY LONG time to get a fix since it won't be able to download the almanac (assisted gps).
Also, some LOCATIONS tend to be very bad for getting a GPS signal. Near tall buildings, for example. Even if you have good exposure to a lot of the sky, the signals can actually REFLECT OFF TALL BUILDINGS and screw up your timings.

Yes I do have a data plan. No I am not near ANY tall buildings - I am in a residential area. I used to get GPS fine here when I had my Nexus One and my HD2 ... but this phone is giving me a hard time....I wish I could get it fixed -I was planning on taking a trip tomorrow and it would be nice to have it working, anyways it should work, I dont see a reason why it should not work...
any other ideas?....
anyone else having this problem? .... please advise me....
If google doesn't know the coordinates of the cell tower you are connected to, it may be sending you incorrect almanac data, which will actually make it HARDER to connect (since the GPS will be making incorrect assumptions about the visible satellites).
Try disabling your data services and reboot the phone.
I had the same problem for like 3 weeks, prior to it, my screen was cracked and i had it replaced at a shop. I finally took the phone apart, and the little cable was not connected. If the phone's been opened since last the GPS worked, check that. If not, No idea bro.

no this phone was never opened, but thanks!...
I have tried all of the suggestions I could find and still have no good results...
any other ideas?
I just checked my logCat and I noticed 4 errors all in a row with the tag "MobileNavigation"... the message says "Network Error! 3 : true". Any insight on that?
Thanks in advance...
so no one knows how to fix this
Did you try to turn off the A-GPS? It looks like your G1 try to connect to A-GPS but it can't connect.
did U find how to fix that cause I have kinda the same problem

My google nav app can t find gps but on the gps status i can fix on1-20 sats. the lock occures almost instantly, sometimes even whithout sats. When indoors (deep indoors) I get lock on 1-3 sats, near a window, at least 8-10 sats.
I d like to know if this is fixable, since I couldn t find another thread that treats this specific problem. I have LG E730 Optimus Sol Gingerbread.
I have the same issue with my HTC Amaze. Looks like there is a huge known problem with Google Maps. This is my second Amaze and both had the same problem. I have tried EVERYTHING. Looks like there is a known issue with Google Maps not using A-GPS correctly. I cannot turn off my A-GPS, so I'm pretty screwed, just waiting on ICS to come out.
I too have been having this issue for some time. This finally fixed the problem:
forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/29581-searching-for-gps-loop-help/page__p__252817#entry252817 --> YOU WILL HAVE TO COPY AND PASTE URL BECAUSE I HAVEN'T POSTED ENOUGH TO CREATE LINK IN MY MESSAGE
For my Glacier's Sense ROM, I installed DARKSIDE SENSE v4.0... of course I quickly reverted back to my preferred ROM immediately after completing the documented steps in the instructions. GPS works great... no more "Searching for GPS..." message.

I can't get to that link, can you PM it to me?
I finally found a semi-fix. In the A-GPS app, if you disable "filter GSP Speed" and disable filter strength, it has seemed to clear up the problem 90% of the time. Sometimes it takes 10 minutes to aquire, but sometimes it only take a few seconds and one it get's a lock, it seems to always keep locked on, which is 1000% better than what I was getting prior to this fix.
I notice my Bing Maps doesn't show the right coordinates of my location. What could be wrong?
You could be standing indoors or somewhere where there's not a good enough GPS signal, or you may have location services switched off.

You are not alone. I started a thread where I called it =garbage. I don't want to generalize just in case it's a hardware issue on my part but it always shows my location in a different city and when using the GPS on maps it seems to always be trying to catchup.
GPS settings
How can we tell if the GPS has locked on to any satellites...or for that matter, if it's even on??? There doesn't seem to be any direct mention of GPS in the settings menu...just a general option to turn location services on or off. Am I missing something here...or does ms not think that giving users direct control over GPS is important?

Totally agree with you. My guess though is that when the circles radius is just a couple pixels from the central point then its GPS; since GPS is accurate to a couple feet and A-GPS when the radius is about half the screen. Again just guessing but I really do wish there was an option.

I believe you're right about the meaning of the radius of the circle in the stock map app. But, it probably isn't as obvious in other kinds of apps that use GPS.
I'm gonna shoot ms an email regarding this...and I suggest that anyone else that agrees that this is less than ideal do the same. Its too late to have them do anything about it in the upcoming January update, but if they hear enough complaints about it, maybe they'll do something about it in the update after that one.
Personally I'd rather Ms did NOT add in any such options. I have the option to use or not use location services, that's enough. Apps that can utilize GPS will switch the circuit on and use it while they're the active app. As soon as you switch away, the app tombstones and GPS switches off, to save battery life. That's just the way I like it, nice and simple. No need for an option of any kind there. It just works.

Jim, if the battery on my HD7 were more robust, I would agree with you. But it's not...so I don't. I would like the option to utilize only tower/WiFi triangulation...and to be able to enable my GPS only when I need my location to be precisely determined.
You are right...it does just work...which was more than I could say for my Vibrant's GPS for quite a while. But, access to any setting that could help me milk some more life out of my battery is access that I want.
GPS ?!?
I have both the HD2 and the HD7. The HD7 with services ON show my location over half a mile away from my office. This is consistent and constant. It shows me in the middle of a hwy norht east of my office. My HD2 not have this issue. It pinpoints my location, tells me in meters how accurate it is and tells me how many satellites it is in contact with. It will actually follow me accurately around the building inside and out. What's the problem with the HD7?? Seems like it is a step backward to me in this regard!

How wide is the circle around the dot? It may be using the Cell tower / WiFi to determine your position and therefore be very inaccurate.
What country are you in?
I guess it's possible that the actual maps are wrong and are showing the incorrect map overlay for your country?
after reading this thread i tested my HD7 with the bing map and its accurate, showed me where i am i changed to aerial map to confirm it...
i believe the data (3G) have to be connected, i am on unlimited data plan so its on all the time, wifi do not work as i tested with the wifi after that and it showed my location far away from my home...
this should fix everyones issue Go to setting and select find my phone check box both opitions and now try bing maps again. you will also notice well driving bing maps will keep a better track well your moving
did that and it now works perfectly, previously it was over a mile off my actual location
Me living in Thailand, whenever my HD7 connected to WIFI (no matter where), the current location always changes to San Jose. I have no idea why this happens ?

hd7 no gps please help
gps dosent work on google maps when i flash back to old rom gps works
As far as I know location services do not use GPS exclusively. It uses GSM cell and tower info as well to speed up approximation and let enough time for GPS satellite locking. GSM cell data is stored in internet databases (do not know where and how) but if there is a mislocated tower (e.g.i Thailand) your location might be determined in a wrong way.
To keep it simple M$ hidden this mixed mode location service. I don't know what happens if you switch off location service in settings and use a GPS application for locating yourself. Is there a difference? Might be.
Hi everybody, new to the forums and new to droid - I recently upgraded from the Propel to the Captivate and so far I am loving it. With all the reviews and forums I read before deciding to buy most of my answers have been answered, but not all.
My phone was loaded with 2.2 and when I registered it with Samsung it showed a build date of feb/11 so I'm hoping that my phone has alot of the big fixes already loaded. I have noticed that the gps code listed on this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=732030
Does not work on my phone, I enter *#*#1472365#*# and the last * just clears the code out of my dialer... no sub-menu, no options, nothing. Any ideas how to do gps testing?
Other question, I spend alot of time off the cell network and I need a gps that works - which app would be good to use? Searching the app store there is quite a few ranging in price, most seem to have mixed reviews. Google does nothing for me since it needs the network to pull up the maps. Basically when I load up the gps it shows me in a sea of nothingness and trying to scroll the map gives me an error 'need network connection' type of message.
Also, I've noticed what looks like 2 small led's one the face of my phone, just to the left of the speaker and the ugly logo. Are these notification leds or something else?
I don't plan on rooting or flashing my phone for a while... yes yes I know, stock sucks, but like I said I was using the Samsung Propel a couple days ago and now the Captivate - I've got alot to learn and alot to get used to before I switch things around. Yes, one day I do want to switch off of stock software just not right now, thanks for the suggestion though. lol

As for needing a GPS on without using Data there are a few but to be honest if you need it for reliable GPS, then you got the wrong device. The captivate is known for having terrible GPS and it is unrelible at best. Good enough to help you learn a new town but not good enough to get you where you need to go on time everytime. The led are the light sensors. No led Notifications with the captivte at all unless you rom a custom rom and get BLN from the app store that will light up your 4 bottom keys when you have a message.
I do have a stand alone gps, I was just hoping I'd be able to free up some pocket space with the phone - so far, it just shows a blank screen with a blue indicator and says it's accurate 'within 10 meters'. I was hoping I could find a app that provided maps and maybe help tune it a bit. Next time I'm on the network I'll play around with it and see what kind of readings it gives - even if the gps is low end, I'm still liking this phone so far... a whole lot better than the propel.
Thanks for the update, zelendel

One is a proximity sensor and one is a light sensor.
Thanks for the info, I got a couple gps test apps I'm going to mess around with in a while but, I found a new problem that is driving me crazy...
I bought a usb wifi adapter - Asus n13 (b/g/n), in the hopes of using my internet for data and my phone will not connect to wifi. Even driving around town to places that offer free open wifi, my phone will not connect. It finds the wifi hotspots, pulls up the ssid, says connecting, then gets to 'assigning ip' and freezes. On my pc wifi setup, it shows a new connection and 2 seconds later disconnect.
In the phone wifi settings, it keeps showing wifi -connecting....disconnected, back to scanning, connecting in an endless loop - but it never connects. It has the ssid remembered but I cannot delete it or reset it. WPS failed to connect from either end.
Sleep Policy is off
Use Static IP is off
This is a big issue for me since I'm on the cheap att data plan.. I've tried various settings on the pc side of things, all with the same results, I've browsed the internet and done a bit of troubleshooting (ie, different usb ports, different drivers, turning on/off services, etc etc) - I think the problem is on the phone since it does not access any wifi... maybe I missed a setting somewhere?
For now I'm going to dig through the user manual again...
OK, playing around with some of windows wireless settings I've hit a new roadblock... my phone says connecting... Obtaining IP address... Disconnecting... Scanning...
That is one small step closer I think, because it wasnt trying to get an ip address earlier, it was just connecting/disconnecting.
finally! I figured it out!!!
Just for future note.... You have to go into your windows network settings, highlight your broadband AND wifi together - select bridge... restart your pc wifi software and then connect your phone, it should start right up!

You say you do not want to root the phone. But try Launcher Pro anyways to access the LbsTestMode.
1. Sign up/in to the market.
2. Download and install Launcher Pro (it says Pro but there is a FREE version, so dont worry).
3. After install, go to home screen. Long press and choose "Shortcuts"
4. In menu, choose "Activities" (yellow icon).
5. Scroll down and expand the menu "LbsTestMode". Under this is a submenu. Choose the first "LbsTestMode" under this. Yes the main menu and submenu have same name.
6. Choose Ok or whatever, and the icon will be on your Home screen.
7. If you get this far, then you are good.
Open LbstestMode:
1. At the moment you probably should just leave Application Settings to default.
2. Under "Supl/CP settings". And change as follows:
Server: supl.google.com (no "www.")
Server Port: 7276
Secure Socket: OFF
AGPS Mode : SUPL
3. Return to previous menu.
4. DELETE GPS DATA just to clear all previous data.
5. Run "Get Position Test" on top of menu.....
Good Luck !!

Yeah, Google Maps requires a network connection.....BUT when you go into Navigation mode - via the Directions menu and turning on navigation, you get navigation. YOU NEED TO DOWNLOAD VOICE SYNTHESIS from the market to get voice guidance. This a good first try, IF YOUR GPS WORKS !!
Or try NAVIGON for Android ....you can buy it but also check here www.mobilism.org (ahem..ahem). I use daily, and I think it is the best routing....
EDIT: Well...about google maps, I think you need a data connection jsut to open the damn software, so you will need Navigon, Igo primo or similar...I AM ASSUMING YOU WANT ROUTING DIRECTIONS and not hiking type positioning. Then take a look at this http://www.backcountrynavigator.com/content/android-gps-software AND here http://www.backcountrynavigator.com/
Thanks again for the updates, but it seems like either Samsung or ATT has locked out the Lbs Test mode feature, both of the codes have the same result - after entering the last character it clears it out. I did get LauncherPro and am really digging it so far, but even the lbs tests dont do anything, it goes to a blank screen and just sits there... I have the status bar at the top and a totally blank screen. I even set my phone down on a box out in the yard for 30+ minutes and nothing ever came up - using the google and stock settings for the test. I'm guessing if/when I root my phone the tests will work
I started using GPS Test from Chartcross Limited and GPS Status from EclipSim - both show that my gps is accurate between 16.4 and 32.8 feet - depending on which the way the wind is blowing. I've been browsing some of the other gps/map apps but for now I'll just carry around my standard gps when I need it.
Even with the gps issues, I'm really liking this phone alot. I havent really ran into any other problems yet
ppl said that the built-in gps for the 8.9 is great...is not true.
currently i don't have any data plan with att on my 8.9. just using the 8.9 via wifi. well google maps recently allowed the download of maps for offline use. well i download offline map for nyc and was testing outside today. it was bright sunny day. i tested outside in midtown of manhattan for about 10 minutes and then downtown for another 20 minutes.
here is the result i got:
1. i loaded google maps and it wasn't able to find me when i was in midtown. the device was turn on for about 10 minutes. as soon i was near bryant park which have free wifi and connected to it, google map was able to find me right away.
2. then i travel downtown and was outside for about 20 minutes and it was searching for satellites and can't find me where i'm located. i was not near any free wifi. so i gave up.
so i think either google map either require data to work properly or the built in gps for the 8.9 is not that great or doesn't work at all.
i heard another offline gps map program called locust. i will do testing with that app later this week and will let you guys know the result.
any1 here also have the same result as me, please post your opinions here also. thx.
Nope.
However, I am using the P7300 non-LTE, non-US flavor.
Tablets have room for big-ass antennae, especially for GPS and they will usually get a steady lock without aid. It still is A-GPS, though (as in Assisted-GPS, meaning it uses all available data to get a lock - network cell towers, wi-fi networks in range, sensors and satellite data).
Mine gets a lock even inside an apartment building. Maybe you should have it looked at, if your warranty applies.

Which offline mapping apps are you using?
I'm not sure it's only the wifi availability that's the differentiator here. You went from within a city that has extremely high buildings (where you got no gps sats) to an open park with open sky (where you suddenly locked on to sats) and then back into the city with the high buildings again..... See where I'm going with this.
Maybe I'm off on my assumption but you can't blame me for thinking it.

The park has high buildings around it too. When I was walking to the park and was near the park, it still couldn't find any satellites until I use the park free wifi.
For the ppl that got the gps working w/o wifi or any data plan? Can you confirm what map apps are u using? Can you elaborate how u got ur 8.9 gps working w/o wifi or any data plan?
Maybe let's all here do an experiment, go outside, turn off ur wifi and 4g and see if ur google map are able to find where u r with ur gps on only w/ offline map for google map? Please report back ur result. Thx.

I can use only the internal gps without wifi and find my location indoors using Maps app.
Sats aren't always directly overhead in the sky so it could have everything to do with time of day and where they are located in the sky. Hence my buildings and open park comment.
*Haven't had to do this on this tab but maybe your location files are messed up from something you installed or maybe you have a tab with foreign location information here in the states. Maybe try the info at the link:

Btw i dont physically have any 4g sim card in my device...dunno if that has anything to do with it?
hmmmm...found an interesting specs:
http://mobilesyrup.com/2011/12/15/bell-samsung-galaxy-tab-8-9-lte-review/
- WiFi (b/g/n), Bluetooth 3.0, A-GPS
noticed it said a-gps. a stands for assisted. that means the 8.9 doesn't really have a physical gps chip and will need data in order to get gps to work properly.
any1 has who has a 8.9. can you try this for me and report back the result? can you go into settings > locality> gps and check only gps and UNCHECK assisted gps for mobile network use by google etc.. so just check the middle for gps and uncheck all the rest, which i below is the first and third related to A-GPS or anything with google.
now go into google map and see if your gps still work and find where you are?
Quick search found this thread. Unfortunately he doesn't state how he found the tablet has internal GPS and there are no follow on comments to confirm/deny. But seems that someone would have caught and corrected.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1271350
Also I always have assisted gps turned off because I don't particularly like Google knowing everywhere I am, anonymous or not.
Could be my brief experiences with it are a fluke as I just have started playing with this tab and have been more concerned with other stuff working. But nonetheless that's what I've experienced.

Quick search found this thread. Unfortunately he doesn't state how he found the tablet has internal GPS and there are no follow on comments to confirm/deny. But seems that someone would have caught and corrected.

Also I always have assisted gps turned off because I don't particularly like Google knowing everywhere I am, anonymous or not.

i957 LTE version running... in between right now. About to install CM10 fresh again and reload all my data.
Hmmm... Not sure when this became about me showing my tab. Again, was just stating my experience. I'll look at it again when I load CM10 from scratch. I usually poke around on here when I'm not at home doing more worthwhile stuff. I may have time in the next couple of days.

Use app like "Gps status & toolbox". It tells you how many satellites are locked
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2&hl=en
I know my 7300 has real gps, but I can't speak for your LTE model

It takes at least 3 sats to locate you (spherical intersections and all that). So I'm not surprised you are not located in this instance.
Dude... Inside you can't use gps... It needs a line of sight with satellites in the sky... Jeez, please lookup gps on Wikipedia...

Well one poster here were able to work inside his house. Go look up in previous post. Anyway I will test this out outside today, beautiful clear day today. But I don't expect any gps to work properly. Will report back result later.
Inside a building, gps might work near windows, or under a glass roof or so. Surrounded by concrete, it is impossible. But a device might position you based on cell towers or a database of locations for WiFi routers, as Google has built up.
was walking to work today. here are my settings and results:
wifi - turn off
agps - turn off
gps - turn on
clear sunny day, outside for about 5 minutes. got 3 satellite to locked from that app i installed last night.
google map and locus still UNABLE to locate me. see attachments for my results.
well at least i was right that gps won't work for me...lol
Hi.
I'm overall satisfied with my Xperia Z1 but there's one problem that I find very annoying.
Whenever I'm travelling and not roaming, the GPS won't work. Why is this? GPS shouldn't need to use regular data.
I use cached maps in Google Maps.
Thanks // Patrik
It do not need network. It can have support via network but is not the main function. If you keep moving the GPS gets even 10 minutes to find the satellite. Turn on GPS, turn on Airmode, go out from building leave the phone for 1o minutes to find the signal.
BTW, the Maps or Navigation in Android working with Network, are you sure you get the right application? Use Offline Navigators.

What is airmode?
I was in London last weekend and the GPS was completely useless. I was of course outside and walking around.
I don't see why an offline navigator would make a difference from cached maps in Google Maps. Could you please elaborate your statement?
Something called GPS Assistance Data is downloaded at regular intervals. It contains positioning data for the satellites. If that data is too old, I'm unsure if it's outdated daily or weekly, it will take the phone a long time to get a fix on the satellites.
Download a free app called "GPS Status" to test the behavior. In that app you can also reset GPS and download a fresh Assistance Data set.
Google a bit about A-GPS and you'll find tonnes of info.

You might want to check if GPS functions normally through service test menu.
in dialer press *#*#7378423#*#*
Service Tests -->GPS-->GPS Location Test
If you get readings on your location and time it took then your phone is fine.
Then check out settings-->Location services--> Enable GPS satellites.
it might have been accidentally disabled by stamina mode or by user.

You are right, but this is not the issue, like I said it will just get more time to get the satellite but actually I don't think he was out of date because he has connected to network days before and in London to via WiFi for sure, Right?

Google Maps most of the time use network for your position and when there is no network it just cant get the signals and positions, Tom Tom use GPS only, for example.

Don't think there's a problem with the GPS but that code doesn't work: "Invalid MMI code"

Yeah sure. But is this a big problem in all big cities? I remember I had the same problem in Paris as well.

Ok. I don't really understand how positioning works just through the internet though. Sure, trianglulation, but that's through the cell receivers which I'm connected to all the time. How can the phone know where I am just by being connected to the internet via WiFi?

I know, it should not have this problems but actually it does. I remember I had to wait more than 10 minutes to get the signal.

I know but actually I know this problem from long time, in fact when you buy or download a Navigation you always have to check if it's working Offline or Online. Difference is that, Offline Navigation use downloaded maps, Online use maps from Network and this make huge difference and when you are without Network it not working. Maybe today is different but I remember it was like that. Download a simply GPS Tester to check if you get the satellite, if it does then is not the problem of you GPS but of the Application. Then I recommend to use the Offline Neavigators for GPS Only.

No, it doesn't explain it and No, there isn't always a problem with GPS. Where did you get that from?

My Z1 has similarly bad GPS lock times but is under 20 seconds with "Use Wi-fi and data network" enabled to provide additional info. Google seems to have something to do to this because to enable the setting you must agree to them stealing further info about your habits.
My 3 year old HTC gets lock in under 20 seconds with no GLONASS and without "Use Wi-fi and data network" enabled.
From services mode delete the assisted gps data and it will download new ones when u a connected to wifi or mobile data...after that even if u are not connected to network u should get a lock pretty faat...but this data expires pretty soon cuz sat positions keep changing...
