[Q] Would like to use it to make phone calls - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Model SGH-T849 Galaxy Tab, Firmware V 2.2 from T-mobile
I've been reading that a European version of firmware will allow some tabs to be used to make phone call. ([How To] Flashing Euro Firmware on Samsung Galaxy Tab Video Included) I found this thread...
Will this work on my tab?
I would like to know before I start and brick it.
I've been reading and reading, but have not found a defitive answer.
Thanks in advance for any info or ideas.

Any rom besides a stock t-mobile rom will enable voice, with a compatible modem. Don't mess with that thread on installing a euro rom - that's so last year.
Flash the stock-safe JQ1 rom, flash the CF-Root v3.3 kernel to root the tab, then install the Rotohammer modem switch.
With this set-up, which is what I have on my t-mobile tab, you will have to switch between two modes: 1) voice+EDGE data and 2) 3g data only, but you can't have both.

Rangercaptain, You've been very helpful...

I presently only use the tab for wifi. Its more of a toy. I used you post for using it in airplane mode and turning off data. It works great, thanks.
I don't need edge or 3g, I really don't even know what they are. Only tmobile voice and wifi.
I have not rooted the tab because i have been unable to figure out how...I know there are two ways, oneclick and x4root, but am afraid to screw up my tab.
I need a step by step instruction to get it all done. Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks for all you help and support so far.

Search for the t-mobile wifi calling app.

I currently am using Skype

I have Skype installed and working. Is wifi calling any better?
Thanks.

Am I on the right path?

rangercaptain,
I downloaded: CF-Root-TAB7_XX_OXA_JQ1-v3.3-CWM3RFS and Odin3 v1.7. From this thread: [11.05.2011][CF-Root v3.3] JJ*, JM*, KA*, JQ1 - su+busybox+CWM3/RFS
Am unable to find Rotohammer modem switch.
Am I going in the right direction?
I use the Odin3 to link the tab to my computer and then flash JQ1. I then flash Rotohammer when I find it.
Thanks.

You have everything ready, except the roto hammer modem switch files.
1) flash the JQ1 rom to get gingerbread. There are two ways to do this, one from chainfire, or one from team overcome (they call it stocksafe v5).
2) flash the CF-Root v3.3kernel to get the root permission.
3) add the folders, files, and app to make the modem switch.
At this point you will have stock, rooted gingerbread on a t-mobile tab that can make voice calls.
You will have to do one final procedure to use a sim from another t-mobile smartphone and get the 3g data working:
1) Back up the /system/efs folder to your pc.
2) delete the files in the /efs folder on the tab.
The t-mobile wifi calling app isn't as good as skype, and can't do video calls.

Help, what have I done???

using odin3. Now the tab is in a loop at the SAMSUNG screen. I tried to flash it twice, no change. How do I get back ...
Thanks.

It looks like you skipped step 1.
Go back into download mode ad do step 1.

I got it sorted out...

I found this thread: [stock rom][2.3.3] p1000xxjq1 p1000xxjq1 p1000xxjpz
Followed the instructions to the "T" and can now make calls using my T-mobile sim card in my TAB. I'm still not sure what I did, but it works.
Thanks to Rangercaptain and the others on the XDA site.
You can't image how happy I am...It made my day.

Now flash the CF-Root file. You will need root when you come back asking about 3g.

Howd you get so smart???

That was my next question. Now I can run titanium backup.
Thanks, again and again...

[Q] VZW Tab - Flashed Roto/JMI, have no modem

I have successfully installed the Roto/JMI v2 Rom on my Verizon Galaxy Tab.
It seems to work, but somehow I lost my modem. Where can I find the CSC/Phone firmware to reflash using Heimdall?

did you roto back first before anything?
Here is the modem.bin file extracted from my Verizon GTab. It worked to fix my modem when I mistakenly placed the zImage file in modem slot for Heimdall.
Used 7z to compress. Just uncompress and use Heimdall to update.
Let me know if this works for you...
when I use that modem.bin, heimdall with go to install it then sit at 100% but doesn't actually install it. It locks up, when I restart I get the phone exclamation mark computer error picture.

Hmm, that shouldn't happen. How long did you wait? Heimdall will wait quite some time (sometimes 5 minutes or more) for the phone to respond. If the phone doesn't respond in this time then you should see an error message.
Anyway if the modem flash did actually make it to 100% then you should be able to use the command line tool directly to just get rid of the phone exclamation screen:

Golden422 - How did you do this, what files did you use?
I have the exact same problem you were having, no luck for me.
I still stuck on airplane mode with no GPS.
If it means anything, under "About device" I have unknown Baseband and Hardware versions.
Thanks in advance.

Same. I have no 3G network. I am also stuck at the 100% loading screen. Help would be awesome.
You guys should check out the Gingerbread leak for VZW that Oldmacnut posted in the development section. It's a full stock GB rom. Otherwise I'd recommend his Better Than Life rom. The stock GB should get you back up and running, then you can figure out what you want to do from there. There's also a stock Froyo rom floating around here for the VZW tabs as well. The Sprint rom breaks the VZW tab's 3g, known issue. You always want to try and get the stock rom for your specific tab.
The Sprint install breaks my modem? How unfortunate. Anyway how do I put a band-aid on it to fix it? Lol
Hope I don't have to send it back to get it fixed...

[Q] Gingerbread for US T-Mobile Tab

I've tried to find the answer to this, but there are so many ROMs and so many posts all over the place.
I have a stock USA T-Mobile Galaxy Tab. I want to upgrade it to Gingerbread. I don't care about root, and I don't care about making voice calls. I just want the same functionality I have now (i.e. 3g data) but with Gingerbread.
Which ROM file, and procedure should I use to obtain this?
Thanks much!
just go to the overcome site in my sig and follow the guide on restocking ur system. flash via odin and install the tmobile modem during flash. that should bring u up to GB.
Thanks for the reply! I'll check it out.

[Q] Just enabled phone calls on my T-Mobile tab.. can i odin to GB P1000XXJMQ?

Just odin'ed to EURO rom JHA to enable phone calls to the T-Mobile tab. I want to update to the latest firmware right now.. which would work?
It seems that P1000XXJMQ is the latest one.
Can i odin it without any problems?
I am in the same boat, with the same problem,
I have a T-Mobile version of TAB, i look forward to flashing it to make phone calls and getting GB on it, so Gtalk and Skype work!
Thanks
I went ahead and followed the guide to flash JQ1 (2.3.3) and everything went smoothe!
Now on 2.3.3 and have phone calls enabled/2g & I use roto's modem switcher script when i want 3g.
sent from Galaxy Tab
Would you be so kind to elaborate on the modem switcher? I flashed and it works, bit i want to unlock and learn about modem switcher

How do I downgrade back to stock Froyo after upgrading to Overcome 4.1.0?

I have T-Mobile Galaxy Tab 7.
After using Overcome for a day, I think I prefer Froyo. Could anyone guide me as to how I can go back to Froyo 2.2? Also, in the process of upgrading to Overcome, I upgrade the tab to 2.3.6 gingerbread. Is it possible to just uninstall the Overcome and use gingerbread? Please guide me thanks.
yes, just follow overcome guide again to restock.
That is by using Odin to install the GB-Stock-Safe from overcome site.
With that you will get GB samsung stock, without anything overcome at all.
You will get the dialer, so in theory you can make phone call with the right modem.
Unless you really prefer Froyo stock from T-mobile that doesn't have dialer, you can get download the firmware and flash it. (if you can find your firmware version)

So all I need to do is install GB-STock-Safe with odin and I'm back to gingerbread? If that's the case, I would like that, I like gingerbread. Also, after I installed overcome, I did get the dialer but when I installed my AT&T sim card, it wouldn't detect it at all. I then used Galaxy S unlock tool from the market to unlock. I was able to unlock it and then the Tab was able to recognize the AT&T sim but when I dialed a number, it would automatically hang up. How do I fix that? Is there something I need to install to get the phone working? thanks a lot!
have flashed a different modem before?
T-mobile has a different frequency. You may be able to flash AT&T modem or other modem via CWM recovery.
There is a modem thread in the dev section.

Could you give me the exact directions please? I'm new to this. thanks
you have managed to flash overcome 4.1, you can't be that new.
First go to your setting, About, and note down your phone Baseband
that is actually your modem version.
Now, if you restock back to GB Safe stock, you will not be able to do what I said below, because this is based on CWM recovery, which is included in Overcome Kernel.
The good thing is, once the right modem gives you all the functions (call, sms, data) you can then restock to GB stock safe and the modem won't change.
Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1069727
and download a few of the modems. Maybe a JPZ, a KM2, an AT&T modem, and T-Mobile modem.
Put them in your sdcard like when you flash overcome rom.
reboot to recovery
choose to install from sd card
locate the modem zip file and install it.
reboot and try out your data, sms, and phone calls.
If no good, reboot again to recovery and try different modem.
It is a hit and miss for some people.
If you already restocked and has no CWM recovery, you can still use Odin to flash just the modem.
wow it's working! i downloaded JPZ modem and did installed from internal sd and now i can finally make phone calls!!1 thank you so much! btw, can I now go back to stock froyo or gingerbread and still keep the voice? also, if I were to just use odin to flash the modem on a stock foryo galaxy tab, i should be able to make phone calls right? again thank you so much!!!
yes, that is right. The modem should stick, if you downgrade to GB stock safe.
Having said that, if you downgrade to Froyo and the package contains a modem.bin, then it will get overwritten. Then you need Odin to flash the modem again.
What network are you in? As long as you are not in T-Mobile network, you should be fine. I myself own a T-Mobile galaxy tab, using JPZ modem in Australian Optus network. I can make calls and have 3G/HSDPA data connection.
I'm using it on AT&T... i don't have a data plan, but if I were to get a data plan, would it work with the JPZ model or do i need to use anothe rmodel? thank.s
Hard for me to say. I don't know much about AT&T
It seems like HSDPA in AT&T is 1900 MHz
I am pretty sure most networks are on 2100 MHz (Europe, Australia, Asia)
Can you get a data plan SIM and try it out, and try the AT&T modem in the modem thread as well?

I tried AT&T modem but I lose voice communication.
weird,
this external link
http://www.talkandroid.com/21900-sa...ers-bell-hacked-for-voice-calls/#.TzDI56fnitI
implies that modem_bell_i9000.zip lets you make voice call using euro rom, and has data as well.
Hey, I was trying to install ICS after downgrading back to gingerbread from overcome.
So, after get the CM9 and gapps from humberos website, I put them along with the overcome kernel in the root of internal sd and reboot in recovery however, after flashing the CM9 zip, I cannot see the overcome kernel anywhere. So i proceed without flashing that and after rebooting i get stuck at galaxy tab logo. can you help? thanks
You wasted quite a lot of effort.
You should go straight to ics from overcome.
try flash overcome kernel using odin (the tar version of the kernel)
Then boot to cwm and flash cm9 rom again followed by humberos cm9 kernel for P1000.
But if you have patience, wait a day or two. Humberos will have newer rom+kernel that fixed slow wifi and quite a bit.
Meanwhile you can flash stock safe again while waiting.

Anyone in S. FL can root/rom T849??

Greetings,
Just picked up a T849 7" Tmobile Tab for wife.
It has the stock 2.2 and unable to make phone calls etc.. (shes on simplemobile)
Anyone in S.FL that can root/rom /update this little tab? cost?
THX
shoot me an email: bluzboy125 AT h o t m a i l <dot> c. o. m.
Go to overcome site
http://www.teamovercome.net/
Read the guide,
Missing pictures can be seen here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20974872
just follow and you will end up with Overcome 4.1 Gingerbread ROM which is very close to stock samsung.
Or you can stop right after you flash GB-stock-safe-v5.
Basically to restock:
Download GB-stock-safe-v5.zip, unzip it and and flash with ODIN according to the guide.
Then flash overcome kernel.
Then flash overcome ROM
But please make sure you get good download. Many people have to download a few times to get it right.
Use a tool for checking sha1sum to compare.
For example:
http://download.cnet.com/MD5-SHA-1-Checksum-Utility/3000-2092_4-10911445.html
Thanks for the info. I downloaded most of the files.
Do I still need to do the SGT Bootloader Patch? (I have 2.2- tmobile now on the t849)
I actually did download the bootloader patch, but cannot find the APK file in the download.
I may stop at the GB stock V5 update, but if all goes well, may continue to do the overcome ROM further down in the instructions.
No need boot loader patch.
straight away using Odin to flash the GB-stock-safe.
I forgot to mention to you, since you are on T-mobile.
To make phone call, after you get a ROM that support it, AND you need to flash a different modem.
Read this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=871021
Basically if you want 3G you can't make call (calls will end).
So you need a modem that allow voice call, but you only get 2G.
