Hello xda members! New to the forums and to the android os. I have a dell streak 7 purchased from Staples. Running stock froyo 2.2.2. Attempting to root with gingerbreak 1.2 downloading from this site. Followed directions to the letter. Usb debugging enabled, sd card installed, allow dl from unknown sources checked, file manager (file expert) installed. When downloading gingerbreak I continue to get error message saying "download unsuccessful," in status bar. Not sure how to move forward. Tried to find similar posts here with no luck. Apologies if this issue has been resolved elsewhere. Any help is appreciated, and thanks in advance!
download on pc then transfer using usb and install with file manager
So no good doing it from device itself? Thanks for quick reply!
not sure about downloading using the tablet. i keep it in my dropbox and download from that
Use a different browser like dolphin browser from the market. This happens to me a lot on the stock browser and most of the time dolphin will download it just fine.

Thanks for all the help. Will try it from pc this weekend. After I dl it to pc do I just drag and drop it into the streak from the pc? I have only had this for a few days and havent plugged into the computer for anything as of yet.

Ota pushed to mine too!!! 2.3!!!!!! Well, I had to start the check and there it is!!
Me 2 I just checked and it's there. Just booting up as I type. And, I just got a "Software Update Failed".
_mrbirdman_
If you guys hold off on the 2.2 OTA, ill have a pre-rooted .zip to install (will work no matter what version your on ) 7 minutes ago via web
got mine lastnight
Something about a cache error. I had to .sbf to get the update. So everything is fine now with 2.2. Now for the Droid 2 root method.
so if im rooted on regular 2.1 will it work out ok? i uninstalled kindle app and blockbuster and a few minor other ones. is that an issue?
I have a buddy with a Droid X which we rooted and then removed lots of the bloatware. He is having the same issue. I'm in this thread for the fix
As with the leaks you need to replace anything you removed from system or you take a chance of bricking. There seems to be a problem using the 2.1 .sbf after trying to run the ota so be very careful if you removed anything put it all back to be safe. My 2 cents

going to run mv *.bak *.apk
then unroot
unless someone has any better ideas...

Just incase u guys didn't know there's a fix for the PC drivers not installing
Uncheck USB debugging and connect to your PC let the drivers download then unplug from your PC and re-check USB debugging.
Should be good to go

Don't bother. I had same problem. Go to modaco and use Paul's superboot. Works like a charm

I had lots of problems with that too. Download the PDAnet desktop client to your computer, this will install the USB drivers needed. They could probably be installed other ways but that took of the waiting for device issue for me.

+1 that worked for me too on Win7x32, following the procedure in the first page of this thread. Thanks guys!
Use universalandroot or z4 works great

Are you blind? UniversalAndroot does not work after 2.2
And anyways, SuperOneClick works great if your drivers are installed correctly...

Cool...I'm on Win7x64.
Settings>Applications>Development>Turn on USB Debugging
was a must for me to get this working with WinXP and the Galaxy Fascinate. The PDAnet applicaiton was crucial in getting my PC to recognize the driver. Thanks for the tips all.

I had the same problem and posted my solution in the main SOC thread. Here's what I did:
I used SOC 1.5.1. I had Debugging enabled and turned the phone off. I opened SOC and clicked 'Root.' When the prompt said 'Waiting for Device,' I turned the phone on. SOC did it's thing, and it properly remounted the phone. Everything is good now. I hope this works for you!!!
i have a cliq xt and superoneclick keeps ending with read only, can anyone help?

I had to first install the driver for android and then everything went smooth.
SuperOneClick issue
once I've d/l SuperOneClick, the file on my desktop shows a .zip file but when I goto extract all, pop up window says theres no files to extract.
I have not been able to find a working link please help!
this worked for me the 1st time, http://nd1razor.blogspot.com/2011/07/how-to-root-android-234-nexus-one.html
works without unlocking bootloader!
tried the guide from the xda wiki but failed for some unknown reason. try the above link.
Download the .apk found here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765 i used version 1.2. install a file manager if you transfered the file from your pc and find the .apk and install it. if doing it from the device same thing. before opening the .apk make sure debugging is on and unknown sources is enabled.
Open the gingerbreak .apk and simply click Root device. If successful the device will reboot. Once it reboots download an app that requires superuser. and if all went well it should ask for superuser perms. Also you should now see the SU apk in your app draw.
Now Download Rom Manager from the market and flash Clockworkmod recovery and flash away. Rom manager is only good for flashing recovery nothing else works within it. You must manually enter recovery by holding + volume and power until bootloader menu appears. Then select option 2. Make sure your battery has 80% or more. No more fastboot. Good luck and happy streaking.
I'm not responsible if you brick your device. Do some reading before you think about rooting and see if its for you.
Thanks goes to the devs of gingerbreak.
THANK YOU HELLZYA!
And Thanks to Chainfire over at GingerBreak.
This is the coolest thing EVER!
So happy to have root now!!!!!!
Time to be a flash monster. lol
Very strange. I have SU but CWM does not work.
I click on Backup ROM and it just reboots.
I click on Install ROM from SDCard and it just reboots.
I click Reboot into Recovery and it just reboots.
Other than that everything else works great that needs SU.
Now everything force closes
I haven't been able to flash because everytime I reboot my Streak 7 returns to factory state, so in another thread I was suggested this workaround to help me get CWM installed and then flash another ROM...
Well, I ran this and it seemed to be fine, ran quick and then rebooted, but much to my disappointment, now everything force closes, everything, I can't even use the calculator.... and sometimes the startup wizard crashes and/or the home launcher...
Im worse off than when I started.
About the only info I can give you is that it's a Streak 7 with 2.2.2 installed
Gravityrat rom manager is only good for flashing recovery nothing else. You have to manually access. Cwr by holding plus volume and power till you see bootloader menu. Select option 2 and you will be presented with cwr. Make sure your battery is at 80% or more

thanks for this!!! Too bad it was just one day late for me after spending 6 hours figuring everything out...
Where was this when I spent hours using SuperOneClick and finding workarounds?
But seriously, thanks for the method input! I love methods that don't require a computer (I'm trying to rid myself of a computer entirely, so I hate to hook up to my old desktop even if it's to root).
Thatruth it was actually posted this week. Saw it tryed it and it worked. Figured id share

Mods, can you replace the SuperOneClick sticky with this?
I am new at this, so can someone please explain how do I "make sure debugging is on and unknown sources is enabled"?
You need to download the gingerbreak apk from xda, make sure you allow opps from unknown sources and have debugging ticked, install the apk then open it and run it your streak will reboot then you have root hope it helps you
Go to your streaks settings and within there in applciations and development sections
Settings - applications - tick unknown sources - select development - tick debugging

Not to familier with the rev, but i need to fix this for a friend, i tried searching so sorry if this has been answered before, but my friend deleted autorun in tibu and now the phone wont connect to a pc. she deleted a bunch of other nessisary apps as well, so i wasnt sure if a factory reset would help. shes on the V6 2.2 update, stock rooted. i assume clockwork is installed so does anyone have a link to a v6 rom that i could flash in clockwork. or the autorun apk or any better ideas?

V6 was never really rooted so a ROM wasn't made for it. I would say just update the phone to the latest update and then root and flash Broken out.

Unfortunately the software won't update without all of the stock applications that are built in to the phone. You'll need to flash the v6.tot file found here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1337386
That will have all of the necessary files.

Thats the whole problem, without autorun the lg software wont read the phone, not even if i mount the sd card from clockwork
Still no answer? :'(

Ok, idk if this will work but it should. Try flashing the v8.tot from emergency download mode. (pull the bat then connect to your PC with the LG software running) flash the tot then use the test mode fix tool and you should be back to square one.
I would post links but I'm on my mobile and I'm not that coordinated.

Follow instructions to the letter!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If the software doesn't see your phone, try the method I posted here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662273
same process generally, just a test mode step w/ fix.
either way, if the 1st link doesn't help, the the 2nd should do the trick.
--I.M.famous
edit: Test mode fix: follow the second link I posted above.
As the title states, I rooted my revolution, but I can no longer access it via lgpnst or anything that uses adb, so I'm stuck. I have been trying to find something to update to v8 or v9 using clockworkmod (4.0.0.2), but it appears that everything being suggested requires me to have access with adb. No matter what I try, attempts to access through adb result in "device not found", or "waiting for device".
I did try a factory reset, which got me stuck in a clockworkmod reboot loop, when I used exitrecovery to fix that. If there is any sort of update or fix to be applied from clockworkmod, that would be great. At this point, I just want to get away from this ridiculous forced download and reboot process that just makes this device harder to use.
Any suggestions?
Flash a TOT with LGPNST, either ZV8 or ZV9, and you will be golden.

This is the hurdle.
Oops. My bad. Missed that and focused on the mentions of ADB.
Edit: Have you tried different cables, computers, operating systems (XP for instance), or drivers? Also, make sure there are no other instances of adb on the computer. I have read that can cause problems too.
Edit x2:

You mean the OTA update? That can be disabled either by Titanium or a root explorer.

I have tried all of the drivers I could find, and all of the different cables sitting around my place with no success. Right now, I don't have access to xp at home, but now I'm thinking there might be something to do with the system I've been using at home (which also runs windows 7 x64). When plugging my phone into my work computer (which runs xp), I got a usb modem prompt. There may be hope if I use a virtual machine at home.
I haven't looked into the titanium backup or root explorer, so that will happen this evening. Thanks for the suggestion.
Score! Thanks for getting me to think about the system again. I removed all of the drivers, created another administrator user account, and then logged into it and connected the phone... poof! I was prompted! I installed the drivers, and then it appeared in lgnpst! A short couple of uploads, and I'm there.
Awesome. Glad you got it going!
