Free SIP Providers that work on 3g? Sipgate closed. - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Any info on SIP that works on 3g and wifi? Looking for a free service but not opposed to paying something. Tried sipdroid, installed fine but errors out on 3g and wifi calling.
Sipgate is closed for free service and gizmo is no more. What's everyone using to supplement their calling?

i've linked my GV to sipgate.. i use csipsimple client with GVoice callback app (it has the option to open csipsimple before dialing a number).
If u don't have a sipgate number, try a solution from here for a number http://hyderabadchatonline.blogspot.com/2011/07/free-us-number.html and use csipsimple+GVoice callback.

Quick question for you on this. Have you been able to get it to work on EDGE? I am trying to debate whether it is worth it to buy over here. 3G coverage is extremely sporadic in Germany, and as such, I usually have it disabled and just keep it using 2G (at home, I have google voice forward to my vonage which then forwards to my landline , so I don't need it there).

Sipdroid + GV + Skype Lite = Skype voip?

Here is a question (let me know if this is a re-post):
There is a way to make free calls in the US using Sipdroid full, Gizmo5 and GV (if you have a google voice account) per this guide:
http://iiordanov.blogspot.com/2009/07/sipdroid-gv-guava.html
This works great when I use GV to call any U.S. number. I decided to try to add Skype Lite to the mix. I set up GV to control any outgoing call in hope that the call that Skype out calls will be intercepted by GV and then routed through Gizmo5 to Sipdroid. I used Skype lite to call my home number (I have Skypeout unlimited world) and even though I got the call back through Sipdroid and heard the ringing tune in my G1, My home phone never rang.
What did I do wrong?
Any change this can work?
Why would you want to use skype? Its just a proprietary mess. You can simply use sipdroid straight up with any generic sip account.

I am using Skype for several years at home. I have unlimited world account for international calls, I have phone adapters at home that work with Skype and an impatient wife that would kill me if I introduce another solutions. All my friends using Skype to communicate. I don't want to have duplicate services or change my life.

Thats too bad. Skype, being proprietary, does not and will not ever dominate the voip market -- you're going to have to ditch it eventually. It's easier to do it now rather than wait until you have no choice.

[Q] google voice questions

so i just set up google voice today finally but i have some questions that i couldn't find the answers too easily online and i figured this was probably the best place to ask.
First off, is there anyway to choose certain people to always call using google voice?
and secondly, this one applies more to t-mobile, are calls through my phone using google voice count as minutes on my plan? because i'm hoping to use google voice so i can get on a cheaper voice plan.
thanks and sorry for the n00bish questions

Choosing which contacts to use GV for requires a 3rd party app thru the Market. GV doesnt seem to have a native selector. Voice Choice is pretty nice.
And using GV does take from the minutes, especially on T-Mobile unless you have the old MyFaves plan. Sprint, Verizon, & AT&T all have a plan where you may call unlimited to certain numbers and adding your GV number to it (usually) works. But T-Mo no longer offers MyFaves to newer subscribers.
If you want to reduce your call loads, there is another option for T-Mo, AT&T, & GSM users... Vonage over WiFi calling is a free app in the Market, and it does work fairly well. There is a CDMA version of Vonage, but thats for Verizon, Sprint, & Cricket, and it doesnt offer the WiFi calling.

very nice app there, a little expensive for a small function.
Right now i'm on myfaves but i'll be leaving it soon to go onto a family plan and i was hoping this would work like that.
With it not working like that, almost makes me wonder what the point is lol.
guess i'll give vonage a shot.
Try "Google Voice Callback" on the Market. You can set it up to set certain people to always be called via GV. You can also set it up to detect when you make a call and prompt you to use GV. When you choose to make a GV call, the app calls you and the person you're calling via GV (your phone will ring and then you answer which initiates the call). This way no minutes are used.
There's a free version and a paid version which are identical. The paid one is just there so you can make an easy donation.
If you want free incoming calls, you'll need to download and setup Sipdroid which is a little more complex since you need to find a SIP provider (I use Sipgate).

[Q] What app(s) to use for wifi-only calling?

Seems like that G2 app doesn't work on most phones.
I'm on AT&T and get horrible reception at home and would love to make VOIP calls w/o Skype or configuring sipdroid.
Any tips?
TIA,
Running Cognition 2.2.193 on Samsung Captivate through AT&T, fwiw.
I use sipdroid and gvoice callback. Works great. You use the regular phone dialer and calls are still logged like normal.

Could you expand on this at all? I've played around with both of them, but can't seem to make it work, I've got sipdroid running and can make calls/receive calls fine, but the GV Callback addition throws me off as to where to use it and exactly what function it serves, thanks!

Same here...having issues getting it all set up. Thanks!
GV/GV callback is to make it free, since Sipgate One allows unlimited inbound calls but charges on outbound.
See setup directions here. This is the callback app that works.

Awesome thank you for linking that! Exactly what I was looking for, the way to do it without SipSorcery, got er working perfect, thanks!

[APP]SIPdroid

Just a heads up... new version is out on the market... fully supports inbound and outbound calling VIA Google Voice... pretty slick, basically (TMo) wifi calling without using minutes...
Add the [APP] flag to the title, yo. Good stuff otherwise.

Correct, perfect VOIP wifi calling, its a free app, dl it from the market and create a new account, log in with your google voice credentials... simple.
Can someone please tell me how to use sipdroid? I downloaded it and made a pbxes.org account (with google voice) but when I call on wifi it says call could not be connected and fails. Also can you do 3g voip calling with att because it wont even register with pbxes.org on 3G for some reason for me.

Download SIPdroid
Create new account using Google Voice
Make sure you are connected to a good wifi connection
Make sure the little light in the notification bar is green.
Make phone call
Ok I got it to work, the problem was actually that the phone used a different gvoice account.
What about my question on 3G?

Wow... awesome. Thanks so much!
Just a heads-up; I had to recreate the pbxes account that I already had in order to add google voice.

[Q] Deployed to Afghanistan - Anyway to make/receive WifI only calls?

I'm deployed to Afghanistan with no service. I do however have good access to wifi. Is there anyway to use my capitvate to make/receive calls on wifi only.
I'm guessing that google voice (or some other such service) is probably involved. Thanks in advance.
Yes! With a SIP Provider such as Gizmo5 (new signups currently closed), Google Voice, Google Voice Callback, and Sipdroid or CSipSimple it's possible to use only wifi to make calls. I'll post more information soon.
Step 1 - Register for Google Voice
Step 2 - Register for SIP Account (try sipgate) and make sure it has unlimited free incoming calls
Step 3 - Set up your SIP # with Google Voice
Step 4 - Set up the Call Back app with your google voice info
Step 5 - Set up your SIP application with information from your SIP Provider
Step 6 - Toggle Call Back, Dial Out, Accept the incoming call and wait for the other person to answer!
I think this covers it. I haven't used this set up in a while and I might be missing some information. Let me know if you have any questions.
You could also use netTalk or skype both available in the market.
And thanks for your service to this great country of ours!

+1 to that!
I use Ooma for my home phone and their Android app works well over WiFi.

Yes! Thanks so much for serving it means a lot. Stay safe.
Att does not support calls and texts through wifi like t mobile. So you will have to use a 3rd party app like google voice as others have said

what about skype?
You can do this..
Download an app called line 2. Its free calls and texts through 3g or wifi and its 10 bucks a month. Not bad for unlimited.
