Samsung captivate shuts off when plugged in via usb. is there a fix for this or am i pwned?
Windows 7
stock captivate
Can you power the phone back up while the USB is plugged in, or does it stay shut off no matter what when the USB is in?
Have you tried to hold Vol+/Vol- and then insert the USB when the phone is powered off to see if you can get into download mode?
Yes i can get it into download mode, and no it will not power up while plugged in via usb.
If you can get into download mode, you have two basic options:
1. Warranty service - if you're still on a stock rom, just tell them what's happening and see if they'll give you a new one without that problem.
2. Flash a custom ROM and see if the problem clears up. If it doesn't, and you can still get to download mode, just flash back to stock and see option #1.
How can i flash a custom rom from download mode?

I suppose you could try the Odin 1 click Gingerbread KF1. It's on the development thread somewhere.

Sorry, just realized that wasn't clear.
Look here. This is an instruction set for how to flash to stock Gingerbread, including flashing a kernel that (I think) has CWM built in. Once you have CWM, you can flash a custom GB rom.
If you want to make sure you get all the way, you could then flash a Rom like Mosaic, which I can say for certain has CWM.

Thanks for the intel! Oddly enough i put the stock battery back in and plugged it into my Vista machine and it did'nt shut down. Once i flash the kernel with odin can i reboot into CWM and flash any rom? or is the kernel rom specific?

Usually you'll want to match roms and kernels based on the rom maker's suggestions. It's possible to mix them, but I wouldn't recommend it just yet.
For example (Mosaic again, as it's what I know), Mosaic VI is using the Darkcore kernel. It's possible to use the Talon kernel on it, but the recommended one is Darkcore.
Just remember if you do go to Gingerbread (and I cannot stress this enough):
YOU ARE FLASHING BOOTLOADERS. IF YOU DO NOT TAKE CARE AND READ AND REREAD AND UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING YOU ARE DOING, YOU HAVE THE VERY REAL RISK OF BRICKING YOUR PHONE (TO A POINT BEYOND NORMAL REPAIR METHODS).

Introduction
Many new users flash Clockwork Mod recovery on thier stock Gingerbread 2.3 roms and then suddenly they realize that they need to root their phone and want to root it. But, when they give it a try they find that they need to have stock recovery to root the device.
And, you shall then need to go through the tedious process of flashing stock firmware just to get back to stock recovery. You will lose all your settings, data, configuration and there are many other drawbacks. But, no more of flashing to stock rom from now on.
With this flashable tar file for stock recovery, you can now be able to revert (or go back) to stock recovery even if you flash CWM recovery with the necessity or going through flashing the whole firmware.
Use it at your own risk!!!

Instructions on Flashing Stock Recovery!
So, let's begin.
Download Odin Multidownloader v4.38 for GTS5570, Tass_v1.ops and stock GB Recovery if you do not have them already. You can download them from here.
Run Odin Multi downloader v4.38 and select the Tass_v1.ops by clicking OPS button.
Select One Package Option and Click One Package button and select the stock recovery file name (stock-recovery-gt-s5570-yagya.tar.md5) file you downloaded.
Leave other settings to default (i.e. don’t change any other options/settings)
When you are done reboot your phone in download mode (Press Volume Down + Home + Power button to go to download mode)
Connect your phone in download mode to your computer via USB Cable.
When Odin detects your phone (If you see a com port number written in yellow background at the top left, then your phone is detected. View image.), click Start button.
Wait till Odin finishes the job (approx. 3-5 minutes) and when it reports ‘PASS’, you can disconnect your phone.
That's all. You have flashed back to stock recovery without having to flash a whole new firmware on your device.
Now, reboot to recovery mode (press Home + Power button) and see if your recovery changed to stock or not. Don't forget to share the result with us at the post below.

This is only for those who want it so, you can stay back if you don't need it. I want no spam in this thread.
AS you can read here http://yagyagaire.blogspot.com/2011/12/rooting-samsung-galaxy-pop-with.html those who doesn't want to install custom rom need stock recovery to root their device since the rooting scripts written till now, only work with stock one.
So, those who flashed CWM recovery but now wants to return to stock recovery since they are not going to flash any custom rom will use this to return to stock GB recovery.

Sorry . No offence dude.
I didn't mean to be rude. I was just a little off that time.
I was just saying that there would be very little or negligible percentage of people that would go back to stock recovery.
And also if they have flashed GB they would themselves get stock recovery. And I think no CM or custom rom user would prefer stock recovery.
I guess it would be really very helpful in case if phone has any hardware problem and in warranty, so may be flashing stock recovery and then sending it back would help.
It is helpful.

Well not a problem.
No read carefully what you have written and what I am telling below. Yes, they will get stock recovery after flashing GB. But, the aim/focus here is to get stock recovery with out flashing GB firmware.
If you can get it, then all right. Otherwise, I would suggest us to stop this and leave it here only.
I wanted to share this since I got few request for this, and it's here now and those who want can use and those who doesn't can simply ignore it.
there is a typo in the first post.
I dont understand, if u want to reduce the tediousness then just make a flashable zip of the recovery. Why odin? They are using a custom recovery after all.
Hold it. There a ppl using cwm on stock roms!! What are they using it for without rfs support?

Well, I understand flashing it in CWM is a good idea. So, I will update provide an zip soon.
There's no need to hold it . LOL! New users are not learned like you are, so they flash it. Later they want to revert back but find that they will need to flash whole rom , that will erase all data and apps. But, with this they can only change the recovery to stock.

Hi everyone. I desperately need your expertise and help please. I had Stunner ICS rom running on my Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000, but it seemed to be a bit of a battery drain, so I figured I'd get another rom. So before that I flashed AbyssNotekernel42CWTouchOriginalLogo.tar with PC Odin just to be safe (oh, the irony) because I wasn't sure what kernel I was on, and that was when the trouble started.
Basically, the phone cannot be booted now. I don't even see the Samsung logo screen, it's just Samsung GALAXY NOTE GT-N7000 with a yellow triangle. I tried booting into clockworkmod recovery, but cannot move the selection up or down or make any selections, so I can't even install recoveries or anything.
Is it bricked? What can I do to save my phone? Please, help!

Don't Panic. I know how it feels when you get this type of problems. Lets start to sort it out
Its because Abyss is being used to flashing roms to be on safer side.
First Switch off your phone.
Now Press Vol Up+Home+Power Button simultaneously and keep it holding all three buttons while you get into recovery mode.
Now flash a safe kernel and reboot system.
Let me know if it worked for you

In that case, try using your finger to make selections just like how you use a phone normally with your finger. I believe the selection keys don't work for that version.

So is it not possible to make selection by touching the buttons ?
because you will have Abyss Touch Recovery for now
Put Phone into Download Mode by pressing Volume. down+Home Key +Power Key
Flash Stock GB (Pre-rooted LC1 from Bodivas - VERY IMPORTANT )
Do all Wipes. (reset, cache and dalvik)
Flash Abyss 4.2 through Mobile Odin and not PC Odin
Again Wipe All.
Flash Stock ICS thru PC Odin
Root by Dr. ketan method
Use Triangle away app.
Done

Wow... I'm an idiot. Thanks guys! It never occurred to me that I can use the touch screen during recovery, just too used to the volume buttons I guess. Anyway I managed to install the Stunner ICS .zip again so now my phone seems to be back to its original state. Phew.
I'm still wondering though, because I'm pretty sure Abyss is quite a safe kernel. What should I do to avoid such things happening again?
Thank you all!

Abyss is a safe kernel. The issue was that you installed abyss kernel (GB kernel) with a rom which can't work with such kernel (needed ics kernel).
After you installed abyss and getting stuck on the galaxy note screen you should have rebooted in recovery mode, do the three wipes and installed your new rom.

Did you read stickies ? Would you mind read this whole thread ? I said there is no need to flash Abyss via PC Odin. And for Root Why you flashed Abyss ? Abyss is to be used when you are on ICS and want to flash a New Rom . Since GB roms are safe to flash There is no need to flash Abyss on GB Roms.
Which rom version you are on ? Know it or not ?
If you know the version then download stock GB kernel from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1371007
Use PC Odin to flash. I recommend to use Odin v1.83 or 1.87 to flash.
It will be fine.
First do this and Wipe Cache/Dalvik in Recovery if you face any problems after flashing by going to recovery mode.
Good Luck !!!
For Rooting the Rom Check this thread and follow the instructions (2nd Post) All credits to him.

Hi everyone,
Recently my Ace has stopped charging through the USB port. I tried every cable I could find, even the PC cable, but none charge (and the PC doesn't recognize the phone), so I've come to the conclusion that my phone's port is faulty. I'm still under warranty, so normally I would just send it in.
Here's the tricky part. I have cyanogen mod 7.2 flashed on the phone, and I'd rather send it in stock. Before anyone asks, I DID make a backup of stock the moment I got the phone, but in the 6 months I had it, somethings happened and now it won't go back to it (it recovers up to 'data' then fails)
Anyway, I have an external battery charger which lets me charge just the battery, so I'm not on some weird doomclock, and have a 16 gb SD card, and an adapter which lets me load stuff onto it directly from a computer. My ace is the Telstra variant which runs on the S5830TDVKQ3 ## rom, but to be honest I'll be happy to get any ace stock rom onto it.
I was thinking that I could go back to stock by flashing stock kernel, then bootloader, and then rom, then stock recovery? The only problem is, I have no idea how to split up the firmware from SamMobile into those parts and have them flash-able. I've seen a similar thread to this on about a galaxy nexus but not for the ace, can anyone help me out?
I havent touched ODIN since last year and I've used it once but to my understanding ODIN reverts everything to stock rom. Flash with the 3-5 package rather than the one package version.

Like stocklite.....But it has some tweaks. So replace systemui.apk, framework-res.apk and touchwiz launcher with stock ones.

Hmm will this method also give me all the stock samsung themes and stuff? So it will look like the day I bought it?
I have tried lately to flash ics rom on my rooted captivate which was running 2.2 stock froyo but I made two mistakes that made me fear that it was bricked
- I removed the CWM recovery folder from the internal sd card. As a result, when I reboot the phone, it starts as usual but get stucked in the Samsung galaxy S screen.
- Trying to fix that, I tried to install a custom recovery image using Heimdall suite and with the download mode, but after flashing it, the situation worsened (may be because it was destinated to android 2.3.) and when I rebooted the phone, I get tha At&t logo and then the screen becomes an assembly of colored lines.
The only good news is that I still can access the download mode. I did nothing else to not complicate the situation.
So do you think the phone is hard bricked now? And is there a solution to relieve it? Thank you in advance

Basically, you get that screen cause you don't have the right bootloaders. Get stock KK4 with Odin (or Heimdall) one click. You'll find the sticky in the Dev section.
From there, you can flash Corn kernel to get root and after flash w/e ROM you'd like to run.

Yes, that's what you need. You don't have the right BLs to run the ROM you flashed so you'll need to flash them (KK4 with BLs).

Today I tried to update my phone to a new custom rom.
I followed the instructions of the threads and tried to get it to work.
Of course it didn't work or else I wouldn't be here right now asking for help.
Here's the current situation.
I am able to boot into download mode + recovery mode and also boot into cwmr and install a different kernel.
I used pc odin to install it each time and it does pass and the rom (i've tried installing a gingerbread rom so that I can try everything again) does install.
the problem is that it is currently stuck in a boot loop at the "Samsung galaxy note gt-N7000" screen.
I have looked up dr.ketan's posts and tried some too.
currently i am booting abyss note kernel 42cwt touch original. (I know for sure it is a workable kernel because I've been using it this whole time.
here's what i've done. please tell me what i've done wrong and the possible ways to reverse it.
1. backed up everything
2. went into recovery
3. factory reset/cache clear
4. use pc odin to install new kernel (since I was looking into switching to another kernel anyways)
5. use pc odin again to install gingerbread rom (I do get the green light saying it did get installed
6. phone auto reboots
7. it gets stuck at the boot loop like i have mentioned above
i will try to attach a few pictures of my note as soon as I can so you can see what's going on with it.

Right now it reboots to 3e recovery.
The rom that I tried to inject to it is currently a the stock gingerbread rom from dr. Ketans thread.
The rom that I had on it is the official ics rom for the hk region.
The rom that I wanted to inject to it was a custom jb rom that uses hydracore as a kernel.
Thanks!!

If I do a stock ics update can I just do it through kies or do I have to do it through pc odin? Also. Would abyss or hydracore considered as a safe kernel???
yes if kies can do it then good but at this situation i dont think. its better to use PC odin for now. yes both are safe kernels

I've tried your suggestions...and it didn't seem to work out too well.
I am able to flash to different kernels and get in and out of different recovers and such, but ya...still no luck with running a rom.
Well I am not sure but I soft bricked my phone when I tried that Abyss Kernel. In my view Hydracore is safe. Philz is super safe.
Flash ICS which matches your region using Odin. If phone boots flash Philz, If not, then be ready to read a lot of stuff or get phone repaired.

instead of flashing kernels. flash a complete rom using PC odin.

the only thing i have...
Hey guys. my note seems to have cooperated and allowed me to flash a new rom and also a new kernel. Here's the catch though, now it's stuck in the samsung logo and won't boot beyond that. Any suggestions of what to do? I am continually searching on the forums to find a solution.
At least I'm happy to know it's not a brick that can't be fixed.
Thanks nokiamodeIn91 for your help so far. I really appreciate it.
which rom did you flash and which kernel? how?
He spent a lot of time helping you. Be sure to hit thanks button

I currently flashed the abyss note kernel 42 cw touch and I downloaded an old gb rom from sammobile .
Here's what I did.
1. Put my phone into download mode
2. Run as admin on PC Odin
3. Selected the Abyss kernel then flashed it.
4. Boot into the cmw, wiped cache then booted the phone into download mode again.
5. Then I installed the old GB Rom on to my phone and restarted it.
6. Phone starts, loads past the GT-N7000 logo and goes into the samsung boot logo.
7. Phone repeats the animation of the samsung logo a time or two then restarts on its own. This loops until the phone is completely drained. I know that the rom works because that was the rom that I used to root my phone. I definitely don't mind downloading another rom if I have to.
my current goal, if we can fix this, is to quickly just update to the official jb rom for n7000 and not play around with the rooting and such until I have even more time to learn more.
at least I know for sure my phone isn't hardbricked, I would imagine I have either missed a step or something that caused the problem.
I have read through the forum and I did come across one post talking about checking my phone's partition and such.
I got to be honest, I'm really not technically skilled enough at this point in time to dare to mess around with that type of thing yet especially with so much coding to make sense of it. (I know this is kind of dumb to say especially when I rooted my phone and screwed up this bad). More importantly, I don't even know for sure if I need to do a partition or not.
Please let me know what I did wrong and how I can fix it.
I got a question though (out of curiosity), how come there's no toolkit for the n7000 like the S3 and also the note 2???
this is the name of the old gb rom that I tried flashing.
N7000ZSKJ6_N7000OZSKJ6_N7000XXKJ6_HOME.tar
I actually have tried several other roms as well (from GB-JB, official and custom) and all of them so far has gotten to the samsung boot logo
I have read on the forums to try using Philz-cwm 6 kernel but I don't know if it'd solve my problem.
let me show you one of the threads I have read, if I dived into the wrong material let me know and I won't consider using it (or learn how to use it) for my current situation

like I was saying before, I really have no experience in coding so all the things that really made near no sense to me. I understand the basic concept of what its trying to do it's just seems like a very unsafe method for me to try especially when I lack the necessary knowledge in this area of expertise.
did you flash the GB rom using the standard PIT file ?
also you could try with the 5 file flashing method from this thread

Hello..
Why are you only wiping cache.
You should have done a factory reset on that step.
