Everytime I try flashing Anything with toasts custom kernel my phone just wants to up and die, If play with the phone and am patient enough I can sometimes get one boot, that eventually crashes and never comes back as I just see a solid HTC logo.
I'm also finding every-time I try booting, while looked up to the computer trying to get a logcat or at least something it appears my phone is malfunctioning to the point it only appears as an unknown device if it even shows.
I've tried Freshtoast, IC3rom and the newest Darchdroid to no avail.
I'm thinking i just got cursed with subpar chips from htc and that perhaps it doesn't even like the lower 710 mhz overclock, anyone else experiencing this?
Just frustrated, if anyone would be willing to give input or plain help it'd appreciated knowing that time is valuable, There is great work at foot here.
Edit: Just about had to shove my foot in my mouth, got a boot started right before I posted, Saddly it isn't booting reliably let it set up
logged into my google account and tried to restart the phone, same luck I've been having has decided to hard reset? "Vibrates and screen flash" 4 Times in the past 5 minutes
well I am not sure what you have and havent tried, but a few things to check first. Is your sdcard setup for apps2sd? if so did you wipe that also when you are switching roms?.
Did you wipe your data between roms?
Have you tried just a stock rom, such as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=681697 . this is completely stock of the final 2.1 release. Wipe everything including your ext partion on your sdcard, if you have one.
Thats at least a starting point to see if you dont have faulty hardware. You honostly should have no problem getting that to work.
Try Zen's slide rom. I too could not boot a single overclocked rom, until I tried that one. Is overclocked, but boots up at 480, and no bfs or compcache, so I don't know what makes it work, but it does. Once in, I was able to overclock to 691 (stock is 528), and I get neocore scores of 32-33 fps consistently, linpacks at 2.9-3.1, so almost right there with those going to 767, definite improvement over stock. Anyways, try it, my favorite sense rom by far.
I'm having these issues too... I want DarchDroid....
Actually, darch's latest booted finally for me! It's a new update, go try it!

Aye Zen did a pretty sweet job on it, If I have to use sense thats the rom with the goodies I really like, more so when he managed to get rid of all the purple and pink from it.
I had the same issues. I loaded the overclock widget and set it to 480 then updated the kernel to .29. Seemed to work. I got it up to 691 before I had lock up issues. 768 is 3 seconds.

That's an interesting fix. I'm going to try that, as I've had issues flashing any rom that is OC'd (trying DC 2.08.1 .29 kernel right now using your suggestion)
Edit: That still did not work for me for DC. I'm at a loss.

I did. My phone will not boot any OC'd ROM. I've been trying for about a week now...not sure what else to try.
As of DarchDroid 2.6.5, it is no longer working on our "sub-par" phones.
If anyone needs 2.6.4 and the dl link is not up, just let me know.
And he added bfs back in, I know it doesn't make sense, but I wonder if that's what is doing it, it's one of the few similarities between darch droid and zen slide that is different in all others.

And the oddest thing happened. I didnt have set up my phone, or download any of my apps. Everything was like it was before the upgrade. I cleared the dalvik, did a nandriod backup, flashed the stable rom and gapps twice! And both times got the same result. Want to know if this happened to anyone else or am luck/unlucky? Thanks!

As long as you're flashing a newer version on top of an older version of the same ROM, you should be fine most of the time.
If the new ROM is significantly different from the old (Sense vs. Non-Sense, Eclair vs. Froyo vs. Gingerbread), you must wipe data (aka factory reset in recovery) before installing the new ROM. After that, you will have to re-setup your accounts and apps and such (this is made very easy with Titanium Backup).
Generally speaking, no. If you were to run into problems you would want to wipe data but you should generally be able to flash from 1 version to another with the same rom with just a cache wipe.

7.0.0 Stable???
I just updated from RC4 to the "Stable" version and I found it to be very slow with the pre-packed kernel and I can't even get it to run with the Decafuct #589 Kernel. I've gone back to running RC4 at 748 MHz....Completely stable and the only thing broken are live wallpapers. Anyone else have a similar experience?

The Hero isnt made for live wallpapers. Regardless of the ROM or over clocked speed. The hardware can't handle it. The only possible way that I believe it will work is that you have to sacrifice your gallery and basically ability to play games for live wallpapers to work perfectly. I can't remember the thread and if it were easier on my phone I would link you there but sorry.

No kidding....Learn something new everyday. I've never had much interest in using a live wallpaper because of the battery drain. The other day I decided to give it a try just for kicks, because the wife's using on one on her nook color, and noticed it didn't work.

I guess I'd been on the same Rom for probably 6-7 months, internal memory full, external SD full, probably done 30 nightly upgrades.
My phone was running horribly, took 3 minutes to boot up, unresponsive, crashing, horrible battery life, just slow in general.
Finally had enough and decided to wipe everything and start over on a clean cm7 Rom and wow, back to warp speed, dont even need to overclock anymore!
I was seriously considering burning my o2x and buying an s3 or something.. but now I can see myself using it for at least another year.
If anyone else has lost hope with their o2x, try a full wipe. You may be surprised how slow yours has gotten!

Ok, but, if you wipe everything, then you lose yourself, you won't have anything in your phone, starting from zero doesn't sound like anything I would like to try, because wiping everything, then restoring would be the same as no wiping at all.
Anyways, if you start from zero, then, after sometime you'll be at the same place you were before wiping.
I suppose he restored apps and data from backup, so all he lost is 30 minutes of work. I did the same for the same reason last week. Since then, I am less impatient for ICS.

Nope, didn't
Had 140 apps, few of which I actually used apparently lol.
I literally started from zero, and surprisingly turned out I've only had to install about 20 apps as I've needed to use them.
My mobile provider is pretty decent so no prob downloading apps
My phone is literally 300% faster, and doesn't crash anymore.
im amazed at how my battery % stays where it is for the most part.
Was probably a pretty extreme case before I wiped it though, 20gb of crap and 150 apps is probably beyond the scope of most normal users Lol.
Didn't really take me too long to start over. Game saves are the only thing I kept really.

No 20 GB on the sd full with stuff plus 150 sounds about right. My sd is 23 GB full and apps around the same. Alone just on games I have over 50 on it.

I had pretty much the same experience about two weeks ago. I always wanted to get a Galaxy Nexus, but now I can wait patiently for the next one(s), especially with the ICS update coming (hopefully?). Going from CM9 to CM7, now it's always super fast and snappy, plus I can play back videos with higher resolution now. The one thing I don't like though is calling somebody because the contact pictures are so small and in such a bad quality..

I think most complaints about slow roms and memory usage are due to unused app overload. Sure, you can be vigilant with your task killers and keep an eye out for apps eating resources and battery, but that's still much easier to do if you go round and uninstall every app you haven't used in the last month. You won't get quite such a big improvement as a full wipe, but it still keeps things running more smoothly.
I only wish google play had some way to tag apps you have uninstalled so that you can sort the good ones that you might want to download and use once in a while from the bad ones you tried out and though were useless. Game saves are also a problem here, as it's sometimes tricky to keep the saves when you delete the rest of the game data.
Totally agree with you!
I restarted many time from zero but it seems I can't live without 140 installed apps at least.
I tried many ROM but the best ROM for me is Temasek with Symbiosis Kernel.
With some little settings I've a great Battery life and great performances!
I'm only waiting for ICS cause I want Chrome!!! :crying:

I agree, wiping is magic. I originally thought my phone was really bad, trying every CM7 based rom and kernel, all of which lagged.
But I don't understand, why does the phone slow down so much after a short while? I don't think normal users can stand wiping their phones every other month. Even my friend's S2 can survive a couple of months without a wipe and remain speedy.

I just saw kind of heavily noticable improvement, when I instead of reflashing stock and installing+setiing, I reflashed stock and flashed nandroid backup.
Cannot explain, except for some fragmentation theory (which for flash memories should not be much of an issue, right?).
Also, flashing few CFWs and then reflashing stock V20Q with SmartFlash made few bugs I had disappear - specifically the bug I got in When switching from Asphalt to SMS then back then to Email then back then to hotmail ..... It does not restart anymore ... cannot explain (That's how I occasionally work hehe.)
I need a little help. My I897 is running on MPD 2.0 ROM, w/ EyeCandy v 3.15 and Corn Kernel 7.06, and it is stuck bootlooping at the swirling optical illusion at start-up. I don't know why, all I was doing was playing a couple of games and it was really lagging, and freezing up and it has been a lot lately. I even posted about it yesterday or the day before? Whatever?
So tonight, it just froze while playing a game and it was totally unresponsive so I let it sit. After about 10 minutes, I noticed it was on the optical illusion and stuck with the illusion spinning away. I pulled the battery, restart the phone same thing. Goes through the first start up screens and gets to the swirl thing and goes no further.
I pulled the battery again and replaced it, went into recovery and hit the reboot device and started it up. Same thing.
Should I reflash the Rom? If I do, I have to do a full wipe and that will suck.
Has anyone had this problem on MPD 2.0?
Maybe someone has an answer.
Thanks, whoever tries to help me with this.

I'm not so sure what MPD is but Corn kernel is on GB. Therefor, there's no developping nor support being made for it, which could explain why you got no answer on your previous post.
Luckily, you can get in recovery. Make a backup, wipe cache/dalvik and try to boot up. If that doesn't work, back in recovery, wipe cache/dalvik, factory reset and reflash your ROM. Altough, I would suggest looking at the newer ROMs out there as we're up to JB 4.2.1 (you're on GB 2.3.5).
If you go ahead with the upgrade, make sure you follow the full instructions in the OP.
Thanks, I already reflshed and its running. I know that there are newer Roms I only flashed it because I hadn't yet flashed anything from the Collective and the eyecandy theme I wanted to check out also.
But after running great for a couple weeks, it started getting buggy. Now I'm gonna do something else. My SII is running darkside Evolution #5 4.03 by thederekjay w/venom kernel, and I wanted an older Rom in my Cap, for contrast.
I'm not sure what I'll do next. I just needed it running. It is my business line for my electrical contracting company. And it will start ringing in about a ½ hour.
Thanks, for your response and have a great day.

What would you recommend for a stable build? I use my Cap as my business line. So it has to be reliable. Camera, GPS, texting, etc..., all have to function. But I also like to have the little extras. As you know I'm on the kk4 kernel, and I'm OK with flashing, not okay with having to run anything that needs me to use Linux or do any command lines that kinda thing. I still new to everything. Thanks

There are also tweaks in recovery that u can choose from and even the ability to change the partitions to Ext4. Check the kk4 corn kernel's op for info on these things.

OC = Overclock
UV = Undervolt
SoD = Sleep of Death
I don't suggest changing voltage on the cappy (UV). The processor isn't strong/fast enough, therefor it takes more time to process what you ask of it = more screen time = more battery drain. While screen off though, your battery will be better (can also cause black screen and SoD at unstable state). Screen on is the main battery drain for androids. So basically, reducing your voltage (UV) will lower your battery consumption, of course at a price = slower processing and despite you intention to reduce battery drain, it might increase it. The Captivate has proved to be quite unstable with OC/UV on GB and up.
Up'in your Mhz (OC) will make your phone faster but at the cost of faster battery drain and faster hardware usage. On top of that, both can make your phone unstable. Finding the right combination can take some time if you really wanna get into it. There are guides about it which you can find with a little search, altough, once again, I don't recommend it.
Thanks Bwolf, I really appreciate you taking the time to explain some of that. I have read some some of that stuff in other posts, over the past year or more that I've been on XDA, although it was Greek to me at the time. Now I knowwhat you guys are saying, I just don't know the hows or whys. In time.
I will follow your advice on the voltage and the OC and leave it alone.
There was a time a while back when I first started messing around and I changed something it might have been voltage, and my Cap went nuts. It was sucking down my battery right before my eyes, so fast and getting hot, I pulled the battery and I don't remember how I got it straightened out, but I did. Crazy! So, I know better, curiosity killed the cat (cap) lOL. Thanks Again

Hehe np. As for what happened before, pulling the battery most likely reseted your kernel settings (OC in this case) as it probably wasn't ''set on boot''. Probably saved you a lot of hastle too
Running the last version of temaseks cm7 kang along with a cutom kernel Neok UltimateS Kernel v3.9Ti. lately ive been trying to maximize the ROM space and reduce the size of the system partition to have more room for apps and avoid using A2SD (which creates more performance problems than I need now). as a result i think this has started causing me to get random applications to force close and random reboots when idle or trying to do to many things at once.
I picked up an N1 for my daughter to use and have experienced random reboots since the get go starting with the stock setup (1 month ago). Since then I've flashed a few different Roms, read through various posts related to the random reboot issue which seems to plague this phone and nothing tried seems to make a difference as yet. Everything from flashing a different kernel to radio has been suggested and I may venture there next. One thing I can say, despite the teen being disappointed and dad (me) having to constantly mess with it, it's a hard phone to brick (ha).
Yeah I've had my phone since launch so I think my issue might be related to wear of. Instantly flashing and repartitioning the nand
If you can grab a logcat of the reboot then you have a much better change diagnosing the problem, without this there will just be guesses

Does seem small. Use 10MB, it's what's recommended for CyanogenMod ROMs.

I think that's not the case. We can have Cache as small as 5MB and still not have problems. I have 10 MB cache and even I've experienced reboots from time to time.
Yeah i can confirm that now after doing that i still get random reboots.
