Help w/ downloading files with browser - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I download large files often say anywhere from 200mb to 1g. The stock browser will sometimes download the files other times it will save it as a .bin file. I have a Mac computer so downloading these huge files is the only way due to not having mass storage mode. Has anyone found a way around this? A certain browser or configuration? A downloader app? When I had my Ipad2 I used "perfect downloader" to download any file. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Try Byte Tornado from the market.

The file i downloaded was .apk
But i just dont know what to do with it...
sorry, let me clearify... the file you download is called "com.isaacwaller.youtubedownloader.apk.jar"... this does no good on the phone to install so i decompressed it so now its "com.isaacwaller.youtubedownloader.apk"... yet this is a folder now and not a file.apk.... so putting it on the sd and using an app installer doesnt do much when its a folder with the name only saying .apk... i need a file.apk so i can use an app installer, right? or am i way off? Think maybe because i use a mac has anything to do with it??? or does it need to be a dev phone? my phone isnt "unlocked," and im running rc33
but to answer your question Rescue7 if you do have a the file "com.isaacwaller.youtubedownloader.apk" and not a folder like i have... all you need to do is put it onto your sd card, then run an app installer. if you use linda file manager it will give you an option... if not use the application installer that you can download via the market

Hmm well I'm using a PC. And I don't have a dev phone, or an unlocked phone. Just a regular G1. Well why dont u just give it a try? maybe it'll work??
JLO: you're either going to have to download it using firefox or use right click + save as in safari, otherwise osx think's a zip folder and tries to decompress it as it downloads, which results in the .jar file.
Here is your application
GO TO THIS WEBSITE AND IT IS THERE. AND TELL OTHER PEOPLE CAUSE I WANT TO SHARE THIS APP WITH OTHERS CAUSE IT IS THAT GOOD.
http://allshadow.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=5415
IN ORDER TO PUT IT ON YOUR PHONE YOU WILL NEED TO USE APPMANAGER WHICH IS FREE FROM THE ANDROID MARKET.
http://allshadow.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=5417
TRY IT OUT AND BE SURE TO SPREAD THE NEWS THAT IT IS FREE FOR DOWNLOAD AT THE FIRST LINK FOR ANYBODY WHO WANTS THE PROGRAM.
solution
just go to keepvid.com from your phone to download youtube videos onto your phone from your phone.
simply just go to the video you want to download on the browser then hit menu then go to url the url is now highlighted on ur phone copy it by using (hold down menu button then press C on your keyboard) not the big menu button on the outside of the phone the button next to the Z key on the keyboard then paste the link to keepvid.com using (menu then V) for paste then download the mp4 walla use a video player to play the video u just got from youtube

I just thought I'd point out that you don't have to use firefox or save as.
Just delete the jar off the end of the filename. It does this when downloading themes also. So far, I haven't had any issues just deleting the .jar.

Pulled from Marketplace. The developer still offers it for download here:

Ooops... seems it isn't available for DL on the website either. It was a free app, so I can just post my backed up apk file in here when I get home tonight.

Unable to download files in Web Browser

Hi Guys,
I am having trouble downloading files (not apk files) to my phone through the stock browser on my N1 (Both WiFi and 3G).
The specific files are avi, mpeg etc...
I have tried Download Crutch Lite, Linda file manager and Astro with no luck.
I am currently running Android 2.2
Your help would be appreciated.
Cheers
get astro file manager and enable browser enabler....
Hi,
thanks for the quick reply, I have already tried astro and enabled the download plugin and same goes with the linda file manager...
thanks...
same prob.
Try cyanogen....... :_)
Have you tried using a different browser? eg. Opera, Xscope or Dolphin.
I have the same problems trying to download amr files. I wish the browser would just let us download whatever file we wanted regardless of whether we can open it or not.
/edit Just tried using Opera. It can download my amr files! Too bad neither stock music player nor doubleTwist player can open it.. *sigh*

Unable to download .zip files

There is probably a easy solution to this problem, but I haven't been able to find anything about it.. I have tried to download zip files on several occasions, and always get the message content not supported, and it wont let me download the file.. Any suggestions are very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

What do you mean download? You are trying to load an update.zip to your phone or you are trying to unzip it inside of your phone? I have not heard of anyone trying to unzip inside of the phone because that is not what the intended purpose of the zip is for. More details because you are very vague in your process.
In this case I am trying to download the super circle battery file, the update.zip file......i click to download from the link, the download doesn't initiate, and I get the message "unable to download, content not supported". If I have read correctly, the file will save to the correct location, then I can boot up in recovery mode and reinstall packages.

Download and install Astro FileManager from the marketplace... then you can download zips
Thanks.. I will give that a shot.

I wasn't aware a file manager has that functionality but using opera mini browser will allow the download of all types of files.

Astro worked great, and super circle battery installed w no problems. Thanks for the help!

[Q) Dropbox ??

Hi,
anyone of you knows the APP Drop Box? I use it for my 2 computers.
My question is if I install the app on the phone. Downloaded it then I move all the files in the same or drop box only when I click on it? This would in fact go beyond my data volume.
Thanks in advance

I use Dropbox on...umm...9 devices including the SGS. Once you authorize your SGS to access your Dropbox account, opening the App will simply list the files in the Dropbox on the cloud. You only download a file by selecting it, which is then stored in a Dropbox folder on your SD. You do not automatically download EVERYTHING in your Dropbox.
Why are we asking for app support when there's a Q&A on the app's site?
This is SGS specific forums, you're more likely to get help in the general section.
Likewise 50 files on Dropbox account .
Open drop box on SGS and download individual files .

[Q] Nook apps from Galaxy Tab 4 Nook on HD/HD+

Now that the Galaxy Tab 4 Nook is out, how hard would it be to pull the Nook files and create a cwm-flashable zip so we could get access to the Nook app store and potentially a better reader app and the UI on our Nook HD/HD+ running CM11?
I have been wondering the same thing for my devices. I actually went so far as to get the apk for the apps. However, when I loaded the apk and logged in, the device would run the apps but I could not do anything once inside and the kids section would not show the books that I have. I could see the books I had in the regular books section but I could not read any of them. It gave me a message about not being able to download to this device. I have no knowledge of editing the apk for use but I'll put it out there for people to work on.
Anyone have a idea of how to modify this apk to get it to work on CM11 or other ROMS?
The app probably has a build-in prevention to not allow the non-stock rom to run.
OK, I'm certain I'm about to show my ignorance but, why does this link not download NookApp.apk?
That's what the link says but the actual file downloaded was NookApp.zip, and there is no apk file inside. Is an apk file just a wrapper, similar to epub, so that I can change the name from apk to zip to look inside? Can I just rename NookApp.zip to NookApp.apk? I want to poke around with this but I'm confused.
Thanks.

Yes, an apk is really a special zip that has been renamed so that it can be installed in android. So yes, you should be able to just rename it to apk so it can be installed. And any apk can be renamed a zip and explored.
Edit: It really does download as an apk. Your software may have recognized it as a zip as part of downloading and renamed it to a zip. (Or Windows may just be displaying it as a zip if you have Windows set to not show extensions of known file types). But what I said above holds.

I see you're right. I was using IE11 and it downloads as a zip. If I download using Firefox, it downloads as an apk. Strange. I've never ran into that before.
Thanks.

Alright. The nook app let's me log in and empty categories. However I do not know what directories it is looking for things in since nothing has anything in it. Also shop will not load, as in it loads, but says no data found.
Using cm11, m11 build.

On Stock, the default nook directory is in /data/nookmedia.

So we should be able to create/modify that folder to trick it into working or is there more to it than that. It will see some of my books but I can't access them.

Thanks hmiem81 for posting the apk. I can also see my books, but not download them. Also, it says not authorized on this device. That makes me wonder if messing with the build.prop might fix it? But I don't know the info for the Galaxy Tab Nook.
Update: it created a NOOK folder, so I assume files should be placed in the appropriate subfolder. However, it won't recognize that any files are there. Also, even though it registers as an epub reader, when I try to open an epub from a file manager it crashes, so it can't be used to read drm-free epubs either.
Does anybody have the latest apk for version 1.2.1.120? I'd also be grateful if somebody could post the build.prop from a Galaxy Tab Nook. Thanks.
