Installing Cognition has changed alot since I last applied one in December. I never updated it as I thought I bricked my phone the first time I did it lol. It worked I left it alone.
The other night I kept getting a "internal sd card damaged" error upon startup and could not access files. From what I read online my best possible solution was to restore it back to 2.1 eclair and start over. I used the Odin 1.00 tool that designgears linked to a year ago to restore my phone back to factory settings.
Now Im trying to update to Cog 5. I went to step 1 link on his Cog 5 thread. I downloaded the newer Odin, Zimage, Kernalkf1. I put the Zimage file in the PDA slot and click start after the phone was in download mode. I got the fish picture and the phone rebooted. I put the Phone in download mode again and put the Kernal file in the PDA slot clicked start. After it did its thing the phone reboots in a cycle to the white att screen to a scrambled screen full of colors back to the att screen and so on. Im thinking the scrambled screen use to be the image of that fish.
Perhaps I missed a step because its taking for granted that I kept up with all the Cog updates and should of done a step before hand? Was I suppose to restart from 2.1? Can I just root the phone the otherway with the update.zip file then install the kernal with Odin. Perhaps I was suppose to root the phone before hand then follow step 1? I thought Step 1 was a root and GB instructions all in 1? Any sugestions?
I was able to Odin back to 2.1 Eclair again. Do I need to master clear, it always fails when its almost done?
Thanks again!
Thanks all
It looks like u didn't use the one click Odin to get on the KF1 firmware.
In Step 1 of the Cognition 5 OP, go to the link and just click on the Download Link. That's all u need from there. This is the one click Odin that gets u on the "leaked" I897UCKF1. The other instructions in that link are for an "optional root", but since ur gonna install the Cog 5 Beta 2 Kernel u don't need this ( it is rooted, etc.). After u have one clicked Odin onto the i897uckf1, just go to Step 2 in the Cog 5 OP and then Step 3.
Exactly how its on the main thread..... you cant get much simpler than 3 steps....
OMG, how did I miss that, its even in big block letters! If you only knew how much I get in trouble at home because im told that something is in such and such drawer I I say I dont see it only to have her walkup behind me and get it herself....
Thanks alot cant wait to retry when I get home!
You are right it dont get much simpiler than that! No need to root if im doing cog 5 you say?

No because step 2 (flashing Cog kernel) has ClockWorkMod already. So just flash step two (uncheck reboot in odin) and boot up in recovery (Vol Up+down+power) =3
Ok, on step two..... that file does go in the PDA box correct? That is what I used. It did its thing. It looks the same as step 1. In the phone info should it say something like cog version yada yada? I also did the volume up/down power to get in the ClockworkMod Recovery v4.0.0.5. There was reboot system now and reboot recovery. Reboot recovery just keeps taking me back to Clockworkmod.
Im such a newb.
In clockwork u need to flash step 3 (the rom) wich should be in your phone

Okay fellas, I have wore out the search function and can't find the answer I am looking for. My Cappy is a 1012 build. I have rooted and flashed Cog v.3.04 successfully.....BUT.....I think I am bit by the bug and want to do some more flashing to see what else is out there!
Odin.....I have read I don't know how many threads about using it, but I'm just not totally sure WHICH odin I need to use!
Can somebody point me to the proper odin download with instructions for use??
Other than that I am good to go and will start the process over once I am back to stock. This site is UNBELIEVABLE!
THANKS!!!

download this, it's Odin3
After it's downloaded make sure you have the samsung drivers installed and follow these steps
1. make sure your phone is NOT connected to the compter.
2. Remove your battery, sd card and sim card
3. Open odin
4. Put battery back in and hold the two volume buttons down but not the power button.
5. Plug in your captivate
6. A box in odin should turn yellow, then click start
7. let it do its magic and DONT unplug.
After you returned to stock and Odin finished, just power off, put your sim and sd card back in and then power up and put whatever rom (make sure its a .zip) you want on your internal sd then power off again and then reboot holding down the three combo buttons and you should go to the clockwork recovery screen, select reinstall packages, it should go to an at&t screen, it will get back to the clockwork screen, press reinstall packages and then you should get to a green menu, press install zip from sd card and then choose zip from sd card and then let it load and boom. your done!! let the boot up animation have 5-10 minutes to start up! Enjoy and welcome to the site!
install zip from sd card
ignore the install zip at the bottom haha i dont know how that got there, and make sure to choose the zip after you press the button choose zip from sd card, just wanted to mkae it more clear.
Thanks! And this will put the stock AT&T ROM back on? From there, I am good to go and know that I have to start all over like I did the other day with root, clockwork, etc.
You DA MAN!

Thanks. Yes, it will put you back to stock and you don't even need to root again or install clockwork, its already there! Just follow the steps below the numbered steps and you should just be able to just install the rom and be done. You should read into and invest into titanium backup to make sure if something goes wrong you have all your stuff.

i just flashed back to stock using odin. rooted the phone. installed the clockwork then i went into clockwork and went to install a new rom. i selected di11i's 6.0 rom and its says the following:
installing: SDCARD:dill1s6.0NO_OC.zip
finding update package...
and thats it. what do i do now before it went all the way through and then went back and rebooted and it started up. its like it hung on that part and it wont do anything. i would say its been at that screen for 5-10 minutes and now im worried. please someone give me a little info.
i didnt have enough post to post in the di11i's thread or i would have
thanks
I usually download the rom and place it in the sdcard root and reboot to recovery and install from sdcard.
thats what i did and i selected it in the recovery and went to install and it started but it stopped on the finding update package and i dont know what to do. can i take out the battery and it will reboot fine? i dont know i dont want to mess it up lol
use your key combo to get into recovery, or type "adb reboot recovery" if you have android sdk installed. then flash the zip again.

First of all, pls pull out battery and let us know the build number, if its 10.09 and earlier or one of the 10.10 and later models.
Second, do u have access to recovery console/download mode?
Recovery: Press and hold the two volume buttons, and power at the same time. When the phone restarts and it as at AT&T logo, release power (only). It should show u a recovery console.
Download: Turn off the phone. Hold the volume down, and plug the phone to computer. It should a yellow triangle and an android guy with a spade.
Following instructions are for 10.09 or earlier build phones only.
1. Get into download mode
2. Use the 1-click odin to flash stock
3. Copy the update.zip attached to this post to ur sdcard root.
4. Copy dilli's 6.0 NO OC zip to ur sd card (select no overclock kernel to be on the safe side in case ur phone does not support speeds over 1200)
5. Get the phone into recovery mode (as per instructions above)
6. Select "reinstall packages". U wud need to do this twice.
7. Now ur recovery console would come in green. Select "install zip from SD card", and then "choose zip from SD card", and then browse to the dilli's 6.0 zip file and select it.
Sit back having a cup of coffee, and the phone do its work.
Please let us know if u run into any issues.

Based on ur number of posts, I presume u r new to this.
1. I would recommend u flash stock when moving between ROMs. This is not mandatory, but is recommended.
2. Do NOT use TiBu (titanium backup) to backup or restore any SYSTEM data. User apps and data is fine.

yes i am new to this lol. i was running cognition 3.02 and then just flashed 3.04 over the 3.02. but this time since i was flashing to a totally different rom i went back to stock using odin. and thanks for the tip on ONLY installing user apps and data.
i recommend you build a jig yourself or buy it online:

it is a very useful tool and will get you into download mode when things mess up. if you will flash / customize your rom in the future, you may need one ...
ya i have another cord i could cut and make one myself. lol this may be stupid but after i am flashed now and its working fine i installed titanium back up pro but its not showing up anywhere in my phone to use it. lol i am a phone noob just tryin to learn ahaha. thanks everybody
edit: i got it now lmao
was wanting to install serendipity 6.4 on my phone and like a dumb ass i left my phone in mass storage mode instead of usb debugging mode when i started odin, i pulled my battery and now i have the phone+computer image and canot get it into download mode, am i completely screwed and if not can anyone kindly guide me through what to do, its my first time rooting
odin uses download mode not debugging or mass storage...
dunno what you think you are talking about there...
installing serindipity has nothing to do with rooting.
rooting and installing roms are 2 different things.
you should have READ before touching your phone.
take out battery count to 5 put back in
hold both volume buttons,
plug in USB, KEEP BUTTONS HELD until you see BIG triangle
this is download mode.
go read instructions to fix yourself from here.
go read instructions go read instructions go read instructions go read instructions go read instructions go read instructions go read instructions go read instructions go read instructions go read instructions go read instructions go read instructions go read instructions go read instructions
are you getting the hint?
programming a phone (or anything) cannot be learned in 10 minutes
...i feel even more dumb now...thank you for your quick reply tho, once at this stage do i have to continue with the flash back to stock to be able to use my phone again?
that would be your best bet.
start from scratch
read then flash.

better luck next round
ok, does odin normally take a while to go back to stock? when i tried it earlier the progress bar never would move so after about 15 min i just pulled the plug
yeah odin can lock up... you dont have much of a choice but to unplug
were you using the one-click odin i linked you to?
or the other full odin flasher?
either way just try again....
i was using one click, how long should i wait before i unplug and try again?
5 minutes max...
click start not master clear...
master clear will wipe your SD card and wipe user apps and data, and must be done with the phone booted up normally and debugging on.
flash to stock from download mode.
what can i do if it continues not to work? and yea i know not to click master clear
run Odin as administrator...
just keep trying, or try another computer....
remember to install drivers...
ok, if worst comes to worst and odin just wont work no matter what i do, what do i do?
if you can get into donwload mode there is no reason you shouldnt be able to get back to stock...
but... how long have you had the phone?
there is 30 day instore replacement
or 1 year warranty exchange...
now if your phone all of a sudden *no longer turns on* and for some reason *will NEVER work again* they cant prove you voided your warranty... and will fix it.
think speaker magnets or a short 1 or 2 second burst in the mic. dont want physical damage but you want it to stop working. FOREVER.
then play dumb... " i dunno just stopped working... "
got it for christmas, and yea i can get it into download mode, would trying the odin that flashes back to 2.2 be worth a shot or do i have to use the 2.1 one that you linked me?
well the 2.2 one click is a beta 2.2... and has 3e recovery... theres plenty of fixes for 3e though.
im trying to find another odin for you...
alright thank you
removed.....
nvm it is 1010, so just follow that and i will be at full stock and from there i can go ahead and flash serendipity?
wait... im looking for something better... damn americans... i have all my links bookmarked... lol
I FOUND WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR!!!

alright thank you very much just one last question for ya, when i do this if i decide not to go to a custom rom can i use the kies program and upgrade back to 2.2?
I just got this tab and like every other android i get I rooted it. I used superoneclick -- worked fine. then downloaded cwm and flashed the recovery. of course when i went into recovery it was 3e so i couldnt actually use cwr without the bypass fix. Anyway -- i used some recovery fix -- which i think was for a vibrant -- wasn't thinking. Once it rebooted into recovery it showed some yellow letters then went blank. The computer still recognizes it but the tab won't boot. i can reset it by turning it off and on but it only shows tmobile splash and the yellow letters scrolling in recovery then goes blank again. please help. i've been reading everything but no one seems to have had this problem.
thank you very much

is that really my best option??
i figured there would be some manual way to reflash the recovery or maybe complete firmware with a recovery built in. it will still go into download mode -- like i said the computer still recognizes it but I just don't know where to start. ive never used odin and not a pro at adb/sdk but i can usually follow directions pretty well. i've rooted g1's, mytouch 3g fenders slides, inspires, atrix, vibrant, captivates so i'm not giving up yet. i know someone is willing to help.
from the off position, when you press and hold volume down then a moment later without letting up from volume down also hold power button until lights turn on, what does it do?
download all below zips, and unzip them
run it usb driver. say yes to everything. plug in tab to computer in download mode. let it install tab drivers
unplug tab.
open odin
Watch the first box on the left. ID:COM
plug in tab to comp in download mode.
That box should light up yellow, that means your tab in connected and ready to go.
place unzipped stock rom in PDA.
Press Start.
When done it should say all threads completed, and your tab should restart on its own.
Let it boot, and welcome back to stock Tmobile
uploads are taking a bit, be patient.
Do you want stock 2.2, or 2.3?
yes -- it goes into download mode
sounds promising -- thank you -- i will keep you updated on the progress.
prefer 2.2 where it was.
thanks so much

ok download stock rom froyo and not Gingerbread
where can i find froyo version?
Hello. I have searched the forums and have not really found out an answer to my question. Earlier in the week I tried installing Andromeda with an ursa minor kernal I believe? (I was following a tut on youtube) I succesfully got ursa minor on my phone but the tutorial failed to mention I had to put Andromeda on the internal sd card to flash it. (first time trying to flash a rom so big noob). I decided to go back to stock and retry using Odin One Click. Odin bricked my phone because it is build number 1108 :/ I have an infinite ATT world phone boot loop because of this. I will be trying to make a jig/buying one soon to get back into download mode to fix this. I am not sure exactly what I am supposed to do once I am in download mode. I want to get back to stock. Obviously Odin One Click doesn't work because of my build number. What steps should I follow to go back to froyo 2.2 and to retry? Please help I am just not sure.

You'll have to use the full Odin program and grab a stock ROM from the development section. Once your in download flash stock ROM with through Odin or heimdall. I'm not next to my computer so I don't feel like fishing for links ..but should be fairly easy!

When I got my phone (about a two weeks ago) it came with 2.2 already on the phone. I don't need to get to 2.1 but I was thinking I'd go to 2.1 and then upgrade to 2.2 using att? If I can?
But why? If you got it as is and its stock its att's 2.2. At any rate If your so inclined on flashing 2.1 the one you mentioned thats using full Odin with pit should work. I suggest doing it if and only if you have that jig handy. Also keep in mind that .tar probably has bootloaders in it (wich is a risk you really dont need to take) just my 2 cents

My ultimate goal is to get Andromeda3 on my cappy. It seems to be a good rom. Could I just flash that using oden? (put it in the pda slot) or will that not work until I go back to stock?

Get ursa minor back on your phone, then mount usb in mounts and storage, then copy the Andromeda3 zip to the drive. You were almost there.
Fish around in the usb port with 301kOhms of resistance from radio shack. You will hit pins 4 abd 5 and you will be in download mode.

Fish around in the usb port with 301kOhms of resistance from radio shack. You will hit pins 4 abd 5 and you will be in download mode.

Thanks. I tried putting the Andromeda on the phone by copying it over to the phone through the mounted sd card but it was all of a sudden "write protected" and showed up as a cd instead of an sd card. :/ I know I was real close but I made some mistakes along the way
also, when you say fish around the usb port. you mean inside the phone? Is there any danger of hitting the wrong pins and possibly hurting my phone? (say i hit pins 3 and 5 by mistake or something) or is it all pretty safe? I was going to try and attempt the jig method that only used the resistors but n oticed the pins were horrible small in the phone:/

It's not inside the phone... it's the USB port on the phone. One pin is on top and the other is on the bottom. If you don't have a JIG, that's the easy way to do it. There's no power on the USB port. This is a quick way to do it. You'll be fine. It's safe.

Sorry, that is what I meant. I meant to place where the charger is plugged in to. Just seems like the pins are really really tiny. Thank you for your help gonna get my resistors hopefully today and get my phone working again.
