Nokia N900 - Off-topic

Im looking for a new phone (again), and im tired of buying phones for their os, (its costing me money), so ive been looking for that "godly" phone that can do them all. so far ive been looking on youtube and google and seen it run gingerbread, windows XP and heard it will soon run windowsphone7 (i wasnt that curious about apple os), but i know that it wont run them smoothly, and it cost about 300 on eBay. so is it worth the price (and i heard meamo isnt "user friendly"), and is there a phone that can run all os's?
Sent from my Droid using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk

I have one, it's mad slow compare to my android, because maemo is not updating anymore. I also had it run on android, but the development also seems to stopped. I haven't tried meego tho. I still have the phone, 32gb is pretty fun as a mp3 player with wifi and browser with flash.

how did it run android because with hardware capable of running winxp im thinking itll run it like it was made for it, also its has a resistive touchscreen, so does that mean it isnt capable of multitouch?

Yes it doesn't have multitouch. Also resistive screens need more strong tapping to work compared to capacitive that you have to barely touch them. It's not an everyday use phone and not user friendly at all

I still have and love a N900. I found it easy to use with a great UI and the resistive screen an advantage, not a negative. Most of all it gave me a real Linux distro in my pocket with true multitasking that blows away Android.
I gave up using it for daily use only because of:
1. The lack of future support from Nokia for Maemo/MeeGo due to Nokia being paid by Microsoft to switch to WP7.
2. Not wanting to be locked into 1 manufacturer ala Apple/iPhone. That was my biggest concern when I bought a N900 but it was just irresistable and I pulled the trigger anyway.
3. Certain apps I use a lot have equal or better versions for Android than Maemo/MeeGo.
If MeeGo ever gains real traction and is supported by multiple manufacturers with real MeeGo devices, I'll drop Android like a bad habit.

Yes good phone

Guys, the N900 it's not for all. If you don't want to mess up with linux go buy an android phone.

for the price, not being capable of multitouch, and meamo being left, i dont think its worth it, but is there a way for it to support multitouch with its resistive touch screen, like how the xperia 10 didnt support multitouch but then there was a hack on xda to make it.

You're absolutely right! But the "big boys" will never let linux to spread on smartphones like they did on all sorts of other embedded systems. For them is just a cancer. Think of N900 as the first and I really hope not last of how a true "smart" phone should be.
Ps: I still remember the massive debates few years ago maemo/meego vs android

I got one of the 1st G1s. Then I got one of the 1st N900s. Now I'm back to Android for daily use but not happy about it. Android and the apps have come a long way since the original G1 but still leaves me wanting. I'm hoping for a MeeGo miracle, but I'm afraid at this point it'll take a miracle for MeeGo to make a dent in the market.
P.S. The debate wasn't that long ago - I got the N900 in late '09. And it's actually still going on.

even though meamo's been dropped and the no multiouch problem, reading the comments below and seeing how loyal people are to it, i think im gona do it. if it sucks then ill sell it and stick to my droid

The N900 is still a lot of fun to play with and still reasonably speedy compared to more recent phones if overclocked. A real Linux distro in your pocket. Nothing else quite like it. Well, there's the new N9 but that's a lot more $$ than a used N900 and no hardware keyboard.
Be sure to check out maemo.org and the talk.maemo.org forums, which are still very active.

My brother has an N900. It's kind of laggy and has problems connecting to WiFi networks

Lol when i thought i had it solved.
All of this is just to complicated, I'm gona go with an iphone4, I wish it could do multi-touch, and I wish I wasn't so fussy about it not, because this is a powerful phone, but since maemos gone I was probably gona put android on it but I couldn't be able to play some apps because of the lack of (you already know)
Thanks everyone for replying and helping me out, really appreciate it.

From a N900/Maemo to iPhone/iOS. Now that's going from doing whatever to solitary confinement. Total freedom to total lockdown. Can't get more opposing philosophies than that.

Regarding the lack of multitouch and problems with wifi connection I have to thank you for my long laugh here

The blackberry playbook is amazing!

Got the chance to play with the blackberry playbook and this thing is amazingly fast almost as fast as ipad2. Multitasking is mind boggling i tried running 4 hd videos simultaneously and never had a single hickup. I love the interface a lot better than an ipad and android. Hulu works in the browser as its a full web browsing experience. The lcd screen is as good as the ipad if not better as the color is more saturated the only downside is the fewer apps available. The dual core texas instrument 1ghz processor with parallel multitasking does makes the difference its so much fun to use.

Curious, how does one run 4 HD videos at once?
Seems okay but still think I will opt out for the ipad2 just cause its more well put together tablet and it just works. Like the fact you will be able to run some android apps on it, don't like the fact that you MUST have an blackberry(with the bb data plan) to fully use the tablet at times.

I got the first gen iPad but the lack of full web functionality turned me off after a while. Not being able to view... practically half of the internet because of the lack of flash was a big thing for me. That and the fact that, while it's a great machine and great for what it does, it's kind of limited in what all it can really do.
iOS is boring; to me anyway. And after the initial magic and shine wore off... there was really nothing interesting to do with the device.
Yeah I think I am on the same boat. Ios is very limited. Looking into getting the playbook this weekend.
the camera video quality is awesome
Good,good,good
Indeed it is... Can't wait to get my hands on mine.
If anyone is looking for a tower defense game with a twist I suggest checking out Lonely Turret for the Blackberry Playbook (I know the dev ). I've tried the game out on a simulator and became addicted quickly - looking forward to trying it out on the actual playbook myself. But definitely give it a look if you have a playbook and want a good game.
Intesting. I had only heard bad things about the device until now. I wonder if they'll backpedal on the whole "you need a BB phone" fiasco. It really makes no ****ing sense.

So, coming from Blackberry World and posting from my Playbook, RIM has definitively said the Bridge requirement will be gone by mid June. The standalone PIM apps were demo'd multiple times. And, of course, a Sprint LTE version is coming then as well.
No specific date on the Android player yet, although it was demo'd live as well. The Android apps that were shown were brought over without assistance from the original devs and no source required. It's just a repackage of the apk.
This hardware is fantastic and QNX is blazing fast.
Yeah I really like the look of this tablet. Also all of the things that are flaws with it atm, seem to be getting ironed out by RIM soon. The intuitive way RIM have even done the controls for the Android player are awesome. The only thing I'd say is they could have brought it out in a 7" and 10" model just for choice as if you're really looking for compact, you could pickup the 7" but if you're looking at buying it for the media aspect you could just buy the 10". But it's RIM's first tablet so I can see why they only brought out the one size... Now to start saving.
Oh yeah I'm also wondering how RIM are going to handle the updating of Android apps. It would be cool if there was a program made that would convert the apk's to what ever file type is needed for the QNX OS.
Oh and of course, what hacking (if any) is going to be like. All to look forward to.
Sorry for the delayed response
A 10" version is planned. Expect it before the end of the calendar year.
Also, the .bar file format on the Playbook is not much different from a .apk file. It is just a compressed file with some metadata. All the developer has to do is unzip and rezip their current release essentially. I am sure there is a tool in the SDK for developers to rezip their app.
I would imagine it won't be long before an after the fact tool is available to users so they can take an apk from their phone and turn it into a bar file.

I hate to break it to you, but Android is probably the most diverse smartphone OS you're gonna find. The iPhone is locked down tight, and WM7 doesn't seem nearly as much fun to play with (in my opinion). Have you rooted your Evo? If so, maybe you should try different types of ROMs? The Sense 3.0/2.1 ROMs are very nice, and Cyanogenmod is a slick (yet drastic) change from Sense ROMs.

Exactly. If android bores you than your not gonna last more than a day or two with WP7 or iOS. Also, the only hardware anywhere near as powerful as what you have is going to come on one of those 3 platforms. Root your phone, theme your phone, do anything you want, but android is surely your best bet at staying entertained.

I completely agree. That was my first thought when watching this video. If it doesn't have an ample amount of apps available to users, it'll go no where even if it is a fantastic phone.
MeeGo doesn't really matter. When the phone comes out, the main question will be "When will somebody put CyanogenMod 7 on it?" Notice I didn't use "how" or even "why". It's a when. And WHEN that floodgate opens... we just might have a bonafide camera phone.

IMO it's much easier to write apps for MeeGo than Android. MeeGo uses the cross-platform (read: porting of desktop KDE apps to the mobile has already started) Qt Framework, which has a really nice API (Qt Mobility espacially for smartphones). It's really a joy to use this toolkit. All your developed applications can run on your desktop OS (Linux, Windows, Mac OS) and on your phones and tablets (Android, MeeGo, iOS port is currently developed..).
I'd love to see a port of this OS to some (more) Android phones. I tried to run it under my Desire HD, but I can't get the software rendering to work.

Your Best Features of Android/Nexus?

What do you think are the best features that your nexus 4 is capable off.
Personally I think the fact you can use it as a gaming console (ps3 controller and hdmi output) is a fantastic feature of the phone.
Also the fact I can use it as a tablet type device by reading pdfs (essential for work) and as a media centre with the music and films.
What are your favourite features of this phone and of android in general?
This could be a useful thread for people to learn about things they weren't aware of . So what aspects do you enjoy the most?

The communities these devices generate.. All the way back from lurking SDX Developers to present day to being a heavy poster on XDA.. I've enjoyed every minute I lurk and post on these boards. You meet some interesting folks, you have some great laughs, some not so great arguments, and more importantly constantly learning... If you're willing to listen.. There is always someone around here willing to help another person out.. All you gotta do is ask.. And if you get bored.. The best feature of Android is IMO that it is open source and the best feature of the Nexi is IMO that they run clean Android and have full fastboot support.
having used an Android phone since the OG Galaxy S (Captivate), i've really come to love that the Nexus isn't locked to any particular carrier, and has no bloatware. in the past, i've always felt like i had to root and ROM my phones the moment i got them, just to get rid of AT&T's craptastic pre-loaded apps. i've had my N4 for nearly 3 whole months and haven't found a NEED to mod it at all (i still may in the future because of a desire to, but the need isn't there).
that's why i love the Nexus...

Off contract, unlocked, open file system.
I've been firmly entrenched in Apple's ecosystem for almost 30 years, and while most apps still exhibit more polish on iOS... Android is catching up.
Nexus 7 was the first Android device that impressed me, and Nexus 4 is more of the same. While I initially missed the ability to communicate via AppleEvents to my server, I managed to solve that problem and there is now very little iOS abilities I miss on Android.
best feature is that i bought one for $220 from a friend of mine

Wow, an sdx reference. Didn't see that coming. They were instrumental in making the SPH-M920 aka Samsung transform aka god awful slider phone halfway decent. Vampirefo was the kernel developer I followed. Ahhh memories. Anyway, my favorite feature as far as the nexus is concerned is the updates.... Like all of them. On time and with a quickness.

Although I've been strictly nexus since the galaxy nexus, these devices do have bloatware (to me)
I hate having Google plus and these other useless Google apps, can't even uninstall them, still love the nexus devices better than any other, but this is my only complaint

So what aspects do you enjoy the most?

co-sign. I really dislike every "skinned" theme that carrier phones come with. Although if I HAD to be stuck with one I guess Id choose sense....I guess lol
I love how easy it is to access Google Now. On the Galaxy S3, you have to hold the home button, then two the Google Now icon.
Keyboard is pretty cool too.

I was just having a little look on an iForum

Not trolling or otherwise causing trouble, I'm not even regged on it.
It appears that quite a lot of iPeople were wishing that they had a gesture typing keyboard.
But the apple ecosystem, with its far superior apps has the answer!

Look at the reviews for it lol,

Quality apps man, think I might switch to Apple now.
You actually need to type into an app like notepad on a Windows PC, then copy and paste your gesture typed text into where you wanted it.
I wonder why there isn't a decent swype keyboard on iOS? I suppose apple themselves are maybe too scared to implement it into their OS because they won't want people to think they are copying android. Mind you - notifications anyone....
Wonder why there isn't a 3rd party one though...?
Edit: just noticed the thread was from Nov lol, but there's a new one. Watch the video and get a laugh...

Apple is for non techy types that just wanna go buy their phone and use it. Done. Stable, simple.....and boring.
But to each their own.

Correction. Flip phones are for the non techy. Apple is for people who think their techy.

iOS doesn't allow 3rd party keyboards. Also, they will only allow web browsers that use a certain type of rendering, or something like that... Apple is running themselves into a ditch by locking our new ideas like that.

Apple will probably incorporate a gesture keyboard into a future iOS revision, call it "the best gesture keyboard invented ever" and then sue Google/Samsung/Swype for violating Apple patents.

Good, and Good riddance to them aswell !
They haven't had anything innovative since, well pretty much the first iPad/iPhone series.
And the phone itself hasn't changed at all since the 4.

Apple has always been the same. Their computers were the same...a couple variants...minor changes from year to year. And no one else can use their os. Well...hardly anyone uses their PC's as a result. They managed to make one good phone...and year after year make very slight changes. Ipad now too.
But thanks to the phones and ipads they make money. Cause the tech unsavvy go with the flow.
But they gotta be the least innovative company on earth. Slowly people are seeing this and slowly apple will die off...unless they make serious changes to their ideals.
Rim is becoming, or became, similar.
Android as things are today will take over the mobile world in time.
Again.....unless apple and even rim change their tunes.

Completely agree, with your two word post People say 'apple just works'.
The fact is, now android can be simple, and 'just works' if thats what you want it to do, but the possibilities are there to do whatever the hell you like to your device, as they should be when you've just paid a large amount of money for it.
You can leave it standard and simple (does anyone?), or mod it to within an inch of its life. I do understand though that there is a market for technically unsavvy fashionistas who think that the latest iDevice elevates them somehow into a superior being. Sad really. My experience. My opinion. Based on people I know personally. Not all of the iPhone owners I know, some are just ignorant lol
All locked down is just boring, jailbreaking your iPhone makes it run slower lol, and you still can't do whatever you like with it.
Android is, and has always been the way forward to me. Nothing to do with blind brand loyalty. I didn't mean to make this an Apple hate thread or anything.
Do not even get me started on the way that apple go about conducting their 'business'. It should be criminal.
I once owned an iPod for about a month. Then I was enraged with iTunes. I then bought an iRiver HP120. Man, let me tell you that the sheer sound quality of that thing with good 'phones made hairs stand up on the back of my neck every time I used it. Drag and drop heaven too.
I never bought an Apple device again, and unless they change their ways something silly, never would again. But even then, the way in which they conduct business has put me off for life.
Don't tell me that's fanboyism.
