Hard brick? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, my phone wouldn't boot past att screen, and when I went into recovery there weren't any files there. I had installed a htc theme from the market using panda home. I was on cog 5 beta 3. I figured it was corrupted, do I one click back to stock and when it goes to reset the phone it just dies. Odin said reset, but not that it was successful. I waited 20 min and nothing happens. now I can't get the phone to do anything, totally black. I tried adams unbrick, but nothing seems to work. This is not the first time I've been stuck, and I'm st a lost. Any help?

Did you use the odin with 3 button fix?

If a 301Kohm resistor between USB pins 4 and 5 does not turn it on into download mode, then you're hard bricked.
PM me and I'll unbrick it for free. I'd like to get some practice.

I had the same problem before on my phone. Completely black screen, but I was able to do this trick:
1.Pull battery, sim and memory
2. jack in USB
3. hold the vol up and down buttons with power
4. drop battery back in with the buttons still pressed.
Got me to the download screen to try to fix it. Had to change my usb cord also (had a slice in it)

Thanks adam. I was working all day and am going to try the resistor tonight, if that doesn't work I'll be sure to hit you up.

So I ran into this same problem with my new captivate. my older one the same thing happened but i was able to just usb, hold buttons, and put in battery and it put me in download. but now with this new cappy its just stuck black. cant get it to go in download.

I hear that. No prob with same program and lots of flashes, but it got me this time. Thats why I've been following adam and his methods of unbrick. Hes trying to make it sage for us

which one click did u use??

I'm hoping it was Designgears version - it might be old but I know that it works.
But try the whole jam the battery while holding the volume buttons trick - then try the resistor.
I know some folks have been selling the lil' pre-made jobs on the internet just to make it easier.
If all else fails - ask for an exchange unit at an AT&T store (because you did buy the $4.99 warranty - yes?)

Does odin recognize the phone, if you go through the proper steps to put in dl mode, even though the screen is black? Its possible you may not see the in dl mode, but odin will. Then you can flash to stock with odin. But do not, DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT USE THE OLD 3 BUTTON FIX.

I have been using dg's since I got the phone. Working on resistor now. Odin doesn't recognize at all. Att said its a software issue and I need to talk to samsung. Since the flash completed, it should have the 2.1 software on it now right?

Is there any way I could have someone walk me through this. With my cappy i can go in and out of flashing roms and going into download. But with my younger brothers i tried and its just stuck on a black screen. We might try going for a return but if I can save it and atleast get it to boot up exchanging it would be much smoother. Please any help will do.

The problem is that the old 3 button fix is an SBL without a PBL. That retard unleashed bricks upon us.

So you guys used the 3button fix? This caused the bricks? Just trying to clarify.

^^Flashing "3 button fix" is the most common cause of destruction of phones. "3 button fix" is a SBL without a matching PBL. You should never do that.

Pbl= primary bootloader
Sbl= secondary bootloader
They must match. If they don't, your phone won't work. Only way to save the phone is jtag (at this point in time). Adam is working on some stuff that may change that(btw, thanks Adam got your hard work on this subject).

I'm aware and grateful of Adams efforts to eliminate the need for jtag. I see no pbl in the log provided by Adam in his post relating to his brick phone. This makes me assume he flashed the 3 button. But I do see a boot.bin. I was under the impression this was a pbl.

boot.bin = IBL+PBL (Initial BootLoader + Primitive BootLoader)... However, the IBL is not written as a protection method on our phones.... It's not quite apparent why they lock the IBL. The IROM is locked and the IBL is locked. After that, the PBL can be changed.
Sbl.bin = secondary bootloader
On newer phones they've locked down the PBL and the SBL (Thank god). You can change the kernel which means you can run anything linux based.

So if someone were to add the proper boot.bin file to the old 3 button fix, it would stop the brick problem?

It should stop the bricks related to 3 button but there's no way to stop the old files from floating around. It looks like Adam flashed boot.bin with his odin run though I'm assuming it was the correct one so I don't think that is the culprit for this brick. I'm still trying to figure out why this happened to him and jferg. At this point I just think they had a bad connection and were very unlucky.

[Q] Black screen glowing button

Phone was flashed to 2.2, however after shutting down the phone and booting it up again, I get Black SCREEN + glowing buttons.
Device : Samsung i9000 from Bell running flashed 2.2 Rom.
I've tried following this guide :
STAGE 1 (applies only if you are coming from an earlier Froyo build)
* We are now going to flash the XWJM8 firmware again (Éclair), so make sure that you load the files for this firmware in Odin.
* In PIT, load the 502.PIT file
* For PDA, select the ‘CODE_I9000XWJM8.tar.md5’ file and for PHONE, select the ‘MODEM_I9000XXJM4.tar.md5’ file. Leave all others blank.
* Make sure that the Re-partition box is checked. All other settings should be as shown in the screenshot below.
*Sorry can't post link, forum restriction*
After stage 1, Odin says Passed, my i9000 reboots with still a black screen+ glowing buttons.
I want to start Stage 2, however I can't find the file ‘JPO_JPO_U_JPP.tar’ file.
I've looked up for solution for the last 2 days and can't seem to find a solution anywhere.
Things I've tried on my own without sucess :
Flashed again this time with a CSC from bell, I've read that sometimes without CSC flashing can't be done, but even with the CSC files, my phone is still ''bricked''
Anyone have any idea how to fix this? Ultimately, I want to go back on 2.2 but for now, I just want my phone to boot again =(.
Hate to say it but it sounds like yout internal sd card is dead like MANY OTHERS who have flashed... No way to fix except to send for repairs to bell/samsung...

I wish you'd stop stating that flashing fubar's your phone. Many people running stock, unrooted devices are reporting the same problem.
Isn't there a way to try and access internal sd card?
Have you try doing a factory reset?
Yeah, I've tried doing so, after reading and researching online, I think this could fix my problem.

However adb doesn't even reconize the phone =/

I diddnt specifically mean that it was the flashing that did it but it is OBVIOUS that it happened after he flashed right???
It is known that flashing will sometimes "speed up" the death of an already faulty sd card and that is what I meant by my original post...
And PS... The number of people reporting their sd cards failing on stock firmware w/ no lagfix or no previous flashes to "unofficial firmware" is WAY lower than those reporting sd card death after flashing or adding lagfixes, etc...
Which obviously points to an existing hardware fault that is exacerbated by flashing, not caused by flashing

And again... I did not specifically state that it was the "flashing" that killed the OP's phone. I simply stated that this seems to happen to MANY people after they flash. NOT the same thing...
Did you come to this thread to argue or to help the OP? I simply posted a reply last night stating that it seems his internal SD card is dead so that he could prepare himself for having to send it away for repairs. I did not respond to the OP to get into an arguement with anyone over "what causes the internal SD cards to fail".
Don't argue guys! I appreciate all your help
What is the best way to ''fix the internal sd card''
Isn't there a way to like factory reset the internal sd card.

@cuem,
Unfortunately... If it is an actual dead internal sd card (which it seems to be since the steps you followed already did not seem to fix the issue) the only way to fix it is to send it back to Bell who in turn will send it off for warranty repair.
IF you have just purchased the phone within the last 30 days (possibly 60 if Bell is still extending the DOA return policy) and you have a receipt you can take it back to Bell and get an exchange.
Again, unfortunately these are your only options to get this fixed...
Sorry to be the bearrer of bad news...
Just when I think this couldn't get worst,I was wrong.
I tried using Odin3 One-click downloader, I wanted to flash it with At&t stock firmware( hopefully it would work) then flash it again with 2.1 clair
After using Odin3 One-click downloader, it said sucessed, but now my phone is STUCK on At&t blinking logo and I can't go into download mode anymore.
I've tried the 3 keys combo, adb doesn't reconize the phone.
I'm pretty much screwed, warranty won't work if Bell sees At&T logo blinking upon power up.......

Ooooooo... That is not good. The American Vibrant is NOT the same as out i9000 models.
What you need to do now is search the forums for the homemade jig thread that will force your device into download mode. Search the forums and you will find it.
Be prepared to be "handy" as you will have to build the jig from scratch...

Need help for my bricked Captivate

I believe I just bricked my captivate by flashing Congnition 2.3b6 ROM. I've already tried all methods mentioned in this forum (key combinations, usb jig...) but no way can put my phone into download mode. Now my phone has become a brick, no boot, only black screen no matter what I do to it. I think the only way to recover it is JTAG.
So I need help from someone (better in CA) who have RIFF Box (or some other JTAG devices) and have some experiences on rescue a dead Captivate. If you can help me recover it, I'm glad to pay for your help.
PM me if you can do it. Thanks a lot!
Have you confirmed that your JIG is working properly? (~300kohms of resistance) And that you aren't touching any exposed metal on the JIG when using it? (since that will change the resistance)
I'm not sure because I don't have a solder in hand so I have to twist the wires together. But I'm sure my hand has no way to touch the exposed part because I'm wearing latex gloves when pluggin it in.
I heard that it is really easy to brick the captivate if you flash cognition without reverting to JF6. Maybe I use the wrong PDA file in accident when I flash JF6 with odin before flashing the Cognition.
Still looking for some help from a riff-box user....
Search odin3 I believe its jh6. Its a one click. Make sure you have all the drivers. And don't use the stock 2.2 those suck. Get a froyo rom. Anyways put your phone into download mode. Take out battery plug in the usb open the odin3. Press volume up and down and power. Insert the battery and release the power button. let the drivers install and a com 4 or com 5 doesn't matter what number it is after the com. Press download now. works like a charm.

yes, it should be jh6. I've downloaded that one-click package but right now there is not any response when I connect my phone with computer and no way to enter download mode as I described before. I believe JTAG is the only choice for me. So anybody know someone who can provide these kind of services? I appreciate for your help.

[Q] Bricked Phone PLEASE HELP!

Ok guys, clearly I'm new to all this. I've only had my Galaxy S (I9000m Bell) for 3 days now and already managed to brick it.
So here's what happened, I wanted to flash CM7, what I did was rooted obviously, I unlocked since I'm with Rogers and the phone is from Bell. Installed Rom manager, titanium back, Terminal emulator, Astro, etc. So I'm pretty sure I have the required tools. I also flashed SpeedMod Froyo [K13D HPCall VoodooSnd4 SharpnessFix STABLE].
Alright so I noticed I couldn't boot into recovery from CWM even though I flashed it using Rom Manager, I tried fixing this for a while with no luck. I then came upon a thread discussing the 3 button combo fix for download mode. I wanted to get this done just in case what happened happened lol
So anyways, I couldn't find instructions for Mac so I tried putting the pieces together using terminal and Heimdall.
The last thing that happened to my phone was that I was able to get into download mode using adb reboot recovery.
However continuing to the next step to apply the fix wouldn't work for me using heimdall, it would just fail.
Being the idiot that I am I decided to exit in terminal, closed heimdall, turned off the phone and turned it back on and guess what...yup I'm screwed. It's bricked.
Now the problem is I don't have 3 button fix, so I can't get into download mode (even if i did, i wouldn't know what to do).
I read about the jig fix but I don't know if i have any other options, hopefully something faster that I can do myself instead of buying the jig and having to wait for it to **** from ebay.
Sorrry for the longgg post and hope anyone here can help me! Thanks
PS. I tried using terminal again to get to download mode like i did the first time (adb reboot recovery) and it didn't work...it said no device found or something like that
Hi It seems your only option short of looking for a repair shop or sending phone to Samsung is to try the JIG. If you don't know how to approach this print any of the diagrams or guidelines e.g. look here.
What you can do is go to electronics part shop and ask for help with the jig ask the man to wire the resistors to the pins in usb plug just to see if the phone kick starts if not, well you're screwed.
If it works just buy it if not, google for repair shop with Riff Box and JTAG adapter for I9000 it takes about half a bell to do it (repair I mean). But if it's new you have to return it in for repair.
I guess you should get the jig one way or another, either visit electronics parts shop, ebay-it
hope this'll help somewhat.
cheers
If you're in the vancouver area, you can swing by and use the jig I made
Thank you both for the feed back.
@Tony I'm actually in Ottawa. I found someone on Kjiji that also made his own but wants to charge $10 and he lives too far away so I just went ahead and ordered one off ebay for $9 with shipping.
I read on the xda thread regarding the JIG that it the phone doesn't boot at all and just shows a black screen with the bricked image (as opposed to loading the carrier name or samsung with a white screen before) that it won't work and that is my case. Anyways I hope it works, just gotta wait and see I guess. I just don't even know what the next step would be. What do I do once I'm in download mode? :S
EDIT: NVM about the whole white screen, black screen thing, it says that the JIG should work if I see the PC-Phone logo which I do.
Three days huh? Wow, when you do it, you really DO it. Reading your description it sounded a bit like a Med student doing a brain transplant.
First I would just take the phone back to your carrier or service center and say you have no idea what happened, pay the money and have them sort it out. I fear there is no easy way out of the hole you have dug.
Next you should spend a few hours reading as much as you can here and then start small. Ask questions before you do anything. Root the phone. Try a few different kernels and lagfixes. Maybe flash something from doc's kitchen or a custom ROM. Make sure you know in advance what could go wrong and how to handle it, as much as possible. Once you have some experience then try something like cm7, which is very much a beta on the sgs and quite complex to flash and set up.
Spend a little time walking before you run (no matter how much you think you know) ...you'll enjoy the trip more.

Haha I can't take it back to the carrier, I bought it off kijiji, it's from Bell and I'm with Rogers. I unlocked it and as far as I know Bell is really bad with their warranty and last time I bought a Blackberry that was locked to Bell and unlocked it I was told by Bell that I need a receipt, which I obviously don't have. I would rather throw the phone away and buy a new one than have to deal with carriers.
I'm just gonna try the JIG I guess since I already ordered it. Hopefully doesn't take too long to get here.
And yes, I definitely need to read more and follow the instructions on a Windows PC instead of trying to put bits and pieces together and try to get everything working on Mac.
It seems however that the more I read the more I get confused, is it just me or are there so many different ways to achieving the same thing?
Anyways, I bought this as my first Android to experiment and learn on and so far that's what I've been doing. I'm not afraid of running into problems, I'll try to enjoy fixing them

You are right that there are different approaches to doing the same thing...often it is just a matter of what works for you.
Once you have a jig you will have no trouble going in to download mode. From there anything is fixable using odin. I would suggest reading the thread about darky's resurrection ROM which is a good place to start from when you have had trouble.
Just remember to do your homework and enjoy the process.
Good luck.

Hey guysss!
I just wanted to let you all know that I am a biggg IDIOT! LOL
So I ordered the JIG from ebay and on my way home I went to a couple of electronic stores to try and buy those resistors because I wanted to make my own JIG as well. Anyways, all the stores were closed and my friend told me he can grab the resistors from his lab tomorrow (engineering students lol)
I obviously don't want to wait till tomorrow. I came home and decided to take out the phone from its box again. This time I did the 3-button combo but in a different way, not using volume UP + DOWN + power but I came across a Samsung PDF explaining the Anyway JIG and it showed to press Volume Down + Home button + Power.
I gave that a try and voilà!!! I'm back in download mode! YAYYY!
I'm afraid to turn it off or pull the battery out cuz I don't want to risk ruining it even more so I'm gonna go ahead with rschenck's suggestion and use Darky's Resurrection Rom!
Thank you all for your help!!

If you can get to download mode you are fine for the moment since that is what you need for odin. Follow one of the guides for using odin here at XDA exactly, and good luck.

Ok so after download mode, I followed the steps to reflash stock, i downloaded the same JL2 that I had prior. Odin said passed but the phone wouldn't boot, it would just get stuck on S in the boot screen...
I did a complete wipe data/cache through recovery and that didnt help.
I then thought I would give Darky's Resurrection a try since it wipes everything anyways...odin again said PASSED but there was a sign of a circle on the screen and it didn't boot. I did it again, said passed again and this time im on a endless boot loop. It turns on says samsung i9000, etc. and then blinks and does it again.
I am still able to get into download mode. I just don't know what to do anymore
Download mode = Yes
Then download stock firmware from samsungfirmwares.com not 2.3.3
or from link

Download ODIN
Flash stock firmware through Odin with pit 512 and repartition checked .
If that fails try Eclair firmware 2.1

Ok so I did the above instructions and I the same happened. I am on JL2 now but it wont pass the boot screen (Stuck on the S). I did check repartition and 512 pit and pda.
I also have this error:
Can't mount DBDATA: copy default media content failed
My question is if I try eclair will I lose 3 button fix? From what I was able to gather the 3 button fix for Bell I9000M only came out with JL2.
Will I lose it or is it permanent once I have it?

How come the screen is just white when i turn on captivate

I superonelick rooted. Then i downloaded ROM Manager and flashed CWM. Then i returned to stock using ODIN 1 click. It failed.
Now when i turn phone on it just shows a white screen and nothing else happens... i can't find problem anywhere else on google. I've rooted many captivates but never had this problem! UH-OH... Help please
the same thing happens whenever i try to boot into recovery and into download mode...
You are gonna need a JIG. Check mobiletechvideos.com to get one or u could make one urself.--see this for homemade jig... [HOWTO] *Layman's iGo Jig* [Solderless]
Which One Click Odin did u use ??
i used I897UCKH3_withBL
i used it the night before and did the exact same procedure with no fault... i didn't do anything differently...
If u can't get into download mode by pulling battery/ replacing battery and connecting the micro usb to the phone, having already connected the usb end to the computer... then u r gonna need a jig.
And a friendly fyi, once u flash Gingerbread firmware that contains the Bootloaders, there is no need to flash a firmware that contains GB Bootloaders again if u are flashing another or the same Gingerbread firmware... or even going back to Froyo or Eclair for that matter, because the GB Bootloaders are backwards compatible.
i pull the battery. press both volume buttons, plug in usb chord to phone (already plugged into computer) then put in battery. The phone screen turns on (all white, blank screen)
I've seriously done this with 5 captivates... i've never had ANY issue... and now this happens. I'm so confused.
Do u remember or can u still see on the Odin where it failed ?
Either way though, u r gonna need a jig.
But on the plus side, it is not hard bricked.
Yeah i just did it out of order... ugh...
well this sucks, cuz it's someone elses phone and it's 9pm on a sunday night... I don't know what to tell him, lol.
Once u get or make a jig, then just flash the KH3 that contains NO Bootloaders 1st, that is, if that is still the base u want to take the phone to. This should get the phone working, if the Odin failed after it had already installed the GB Bootloaders.
good grief... i still can't believe this has happened... I guess i'll just give him my phone to use... i'm never helping anyone else again with their phone. I don't want to be responsible for this crap.
Can i just take his phone to AT&T store and get a new one (it is only 2 months old)
i mean are there any other ways to try and get the phone to do SOMETHING? I mean it turns on....
Jig is ur answer.
If it turns on still its fixable if you tried download mode and the screen is all white does odin still see the phone??

odin does not see the phone.
As others have mentioned jig is your only option at this point, but easily fixed none the less

okay well i just bought one. I'm really short on time to make one this week. So it'll be here tomorrow or wednesday.
what are the actual instructions once the jig comes in? I just plug it in and it goes into download mode? Then hook it up to computer and ODIN. (which odin do you recommend for cognition, or do you recommend another OS? )
Search, man, search.there are dozens of threads that answer this, and all the questions you've had.
You may also want to try one of the heimdall one-clicks, especially if ODIN isn't working for you.
i appreciate that. I just wanted the opinions of forum members that i respect. (i know there are a lot out there who are worthy of it as well.) So i figured while i had one's attention, i would ask
There is nothing wrong with asking questions, but you can learn more by searching for one answer than asking 10 questions.

[Q] Major phone issue (hardbrick?)

I tried flashing the ics source port but forgot to flash cm7 first... It flashed fine and I followed the procedure to flash. The phone would turn on but always go straight to recovery. I figured this was because I didn't go to cm7 first, so I went to flash it but I kept getting errors. I went to flash stock, it started going so I walked away. When I came back my phone was just a white screen and odin was stuck at sbl.bin. So now I can't boot up the phone, there's no bootloaders, just a black screen whenever I try to do anything. The thing is, I can get into download mode just fine through button combos which leads me to think it's not bricked. However, odin/heimdall will not recognize it... Anyone know what to do?
EDIT: View last post by me.

Try the things listed in the "connectivity issues" post attached to my signature. If none of those works to get Odin/Heimdall to see your phone, post back.
followed it. Didn't recognize for like a minute then it showed up. I started it but it's stuck at do not turn off the target
tried again and same thing
What is it showing on the computer side (i.e. what is Odin/Heimdall saying right now)?
I'm using odin right now. But heimdal would always just say not recognized or whatever it says. Odin, when I get it to finally recognize after waiting a minute using your method, it just gets to DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET! and stalls there.
I got it to work. No clue what made it finally work

Good to hear. I know the feeling - it's like the computer/phone are just messing with you.
Damn. A similar thing happened. I had to flash to stock since button combos weren't working, and all the sudden while odin was running my screen just went black. I waited to see if anything would happen, but everything just stalled there. I've been trying to use my homemade 100k ohm resistor jig, and button combos to get into download mode but nothing seems to be doing anything. Am I bricked?
If u have no signs of life at all (no battery charging screen when u plug into a wall charger or no kind of something happening if u try to power it on) then u r hard bricked.
But there is Jtag and the Unbrickable Mod.

Its cheap and keeps your phone from ever being unrecoverable again, it is better than paying the $150 for a replacement.

Yeah and seeing as how I'm planning on doing a bunch of development on it once I get another phone, I'm probably going to need it.
I have it and it does come in handy

Sometimes, if you get a lucky brick, the UnBrickable resurrector will work without any mod. This is rare, but its a shot. If you need a mod and don't have the tools, pm me.

I had something similar happen to me,when I was running A6 or A7. I even noticed that I was losing folders that were visible on CWM. I was going to try to re-flash the ROM, but those folders were gone. What fixed it for me, was I did a Factory Reset, and al of the lost folders came back, and I was able to Odin back to stock. I was one of the more weird things I'd seen with my Cap
