I'm experiencing incredibly slow WIFI since upgrading a ROM and wondered if there is anything I can do about. 200k down - 20k up and pings anywhere from 600ms to 1500ms. It also fails and reconnects.
Could the problem be related to the modem that was installed with the ROM? I'm unsure is this effects wifi speed? 3G is fine and running as it normally would.
If it isn't the modem what is the nest way of diagnosing issues with WIFI? what should I try re-installing / overwriting?
It's one niggle in a very stable smooth ROM.
I'm running the following if this helps anyone;
Phone model is a GT-I9000
firmware - 2.3.4
baseband I9000XXJVQ
kernel - 2.6.35.7-I9000XXJVQ-CL281085 Ficetobeast #darkcore_2.9.2_JVQ
Build Number - DarkyROM JVQ v10.2

try a different kernel as i do believe wifi drivers are contained within the kernel
Many thanks. Is the modem part of the Kernel then? Should I try the darkyrom site to see if they have a different kernal for their ROM?

no, the modem is seperate, some people say modem effects wifi, others refute this...from personal experience i have found quite big differences with kernels, so yes, try on darkys thread for suggestions for alternative kernels

hey guys , i have flashed several rom and i really like the look and feel of the darky's rom however i have really bad reception issue. sometimes at home where i usually have full bar i have no signals at all , or last night i was traveling to Oklahoma city with my friend who is running captivate on stock rom and he had full bar while i had no service at all ! any idea what i'm doing wrong ?
Usually better to ask in the darky thread , but anyways.
Did you flash back to stock and then upgrade to darkys or did you upgrade on top of a previous rom? If the latter, flash back to stock and reinstall.
If the former, try a different modem. I am not using the modem or kernel that came with darkys rom. I am using the kernel with speedmod and ugjl2 modem and so far I have great reception. Of course that isn't saying much as I always have great reception using my cell device (can't think of its name atm.)

You are running the I9000 version and not the captivate port. This alone wont cause problems if you have the reoriented kernel but the jpy modem you have will. I believe it does not have the 850 band. Flash a different modem from the modem thread in the development section and you should be good to go.
If im mistaken please forgive as its 7:30am and I still haven't slept yet.

thanks for your reply ! well yea i did one click odin to stock 2.1 and then flash this using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=868262
and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808286 flashing xcaliburinhand's latest reoriented kernel (odin version) with voodoo (I9000_reoriented_v2.3.0) so i'm not sure what is the issue here ... can you all guide me what modem should i use ? i was actually thinking about the same thing because i use to have a phone that didn't have 850 bad and i had this kind of issue ! so any help of how and where to get a modem to flash will be greatly appreciated !
I personally use JK4. A lot of people find that JL3 works better for them. Either way at the moment these are the top two modems available. Both can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9134296&postcount=2 and are flashable via CWM.
Also next time you are going to flash a version of Darky's just use this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=890429 or any one that ytt3r starts because he ports them over to the captivate and you don't have to worry about messing with kernels or anything not working properly.
thanks i'll try it next week , since i'm running Axura 2.2 and so far i like it
Hi guys,
Rogers Captivate, i896.
While using my headset on the following custom ROMs I am finding that the other party can hear these VERY VERY loud ticking noises. However if I unlock the screen during the call (while using my headphones, the noise will not occur)... of course locking the phone during the call while using the headset will cause this noise to appear at short intervals. There is no noise at all without using a headset.
This problem however does not occur while on the rogers stock 2.2 ROM. The headset does not cause any sounds on the iPhone either.
Any ideas as to what is causing the noise so that I can start using custom ROMs again? I cant live without my firefly....
Thanks in advance.
had similar issues with 2.2 roms. what roms modem kernel are you using?
should be good with speedmod and kc1 modem or kp1 modem.
I got the ticking noises with Pheonix (the release before ultimate) and Ultimate, Serendipity 6.2-6.3, Firefly 2.6-2.9

what kernel/s do those use. also change the modem.bin to one of the newwer ones. it is a i9000 modem on captivate issue. jk3 and jk4 really are not captivate friendly. kp1 is. kc1 is also doing well despite being an i9000 modem.
some are even using the gingerbread modems if yo want to try one.
After a quick run through i am noticing that most run speedmod k12 / k13.
Hmm so you are thinking its a modem issue?
I suppose ill try flashing alternate modems this time. I guess i have some reading to do
Perhaps i might even try out some other roms that have alternate default modems.

speedmod shouldnt be a problem but if you are not interested in overclocking you can try maybe ursa minor. it is the andromeda kernel and 2.2 rather than 2.2.1 but it is no oredinary 2.2 kernel. it might not benchmark in quadrant and linpack as well as speedmod but feels quite speedy. it uses kernel modules that can turn on and off to minimize overhead as i understand it.

As for FF 2.9 - Full flash comes with speedmod K13E and JK4 modem. Which are both extremly stable! I suggest you try these
im actually using firefly 2.9 ..
im still getting the ticking noises..
any other ideas?
hello, I was on darkys rom v9.5, was having serious problems with battery drain, and occasionally device would swich off by itself.
So i decided to try stock 2.2.1, its fast, battery is a lot better, BUT i have no data connection. I still can make calls Gps and wifi but no data connection. I used a european firmware and flashed the eurpean modem on there by mistake. I'm downloading an australian version of 2.2 and gonna try just the modem baseband from that, while remaining on 2.2.1. hope it works!
My question is does anyone know the best baseband firmware (quickest, most efficient on battery) to use in australia? .... maybe post a link
my network is virginmobile if that helps.
get on to Darky 10.1 extreme edition. Its a 2.3.3 rom will be 10 times better than 2.2, i use ZSJPG modem and is good in melbourne.
Quick question, can I use i897 modem and kernel on an i9000 rom?
Just curious.

This actually seems logically possible.
If we can use a reoriented i9000 kernel + i9000 modem on a captivate rom, why can't we use a matching captivate modem+ kernel on an i9000 rom?
I thought the important thing is to match the modem and kernel...

You're right. As long as they match it's fine.
Well experimentation if the spice of life.

Well, accidentally I ended with this configuration:
ROM: Apex 9.2 (JVR)
KERNEL: Talon 4.4.22 (JVR)
MODEM: KH3
Teoretically this shouldnt be happening but everything seems to be working O.K. No Force Closes, WCDMA 850, average battery life, WiFi, etc.

you have always been able to run mix/match, until you need to make an actual phone call. no voice.

Yes I ran that combo until I got a phone call and the other person could not hear me and the volume was cutting in and out flashed back to JL2 all is good again
Running Dlevs 5.0, and latest talon kernel, modem JL2
As you can see from my signature I am still running 2.2 ROMs. I just prefer the stability, and have zero issues with both that I am using now on different captivates. One of them, Continuum 4.1 is and i9000 rom, using Onyx kernel with jk4, the other is the i897 Cognition, cog kernel, kb1.
I think, based on what I am reading here, I will try to intall the i897 modem and kernel on the Continuum 4.1 ROM. I really like this ROM but REALLY prefer the sound quality of the i897 roms because of the Audience chip.
I will experiment this weekend and report back. As of now, I prefer not to do this kind of experimentation with the GB roms. Anyone else interested in seeing how this turns out?

Hi Jack man,
if you are still considering flashing i897 kernel & modem , my captivate is still Froyo 2.2 stock (rooted), with the uckb2 modem and kernel 2.6.32.9. I already have a dump of the kernel (I checked is working) and could send you a dump of the uckb2 modem (unchecked, I'm unsure about flashing this one back, since I have the 100% battery shutdown issue and still considering a RMA) if you are willing to try.
Let me know,
Angel
Well, I experimented. Here's what I used and how it went.
I installed Continuum 4.1 (a froyo 2.2 rom) then flashed the Exist kb1 kernel along with the kb1 modem. I thought everything was going to be fine. Calls worked fine, data seemed ok but slower than I was expecting, but when I went to turn on wifi if just didn't work. I made sure it was't the router - my wife's phone was working fine on the router, along with a laptop on it.
it would also not connect to the neighbor's router either. Flashed back to Cog4.5.3 - wifi worked fine.
Too bad, because I really like the small features of Continuum 4.1
If anyone has any ideas to fix the wifi in this setup let me know. I would love to keep it.
Sorry if this is a noob question
So before I was on Rocket ROM XXLA4 with baseband XXLA4
I installed the new Rocket ROM XXLA6, but my baseband was still XXLA4. I noticed that my wifi connection was a lot slower on the XXLA6 than the XXLA4
Is there any reason for this? Perhaps I need to change my baseband to XXLA6?
Any help would be much appreciated
Thanks in advanced!
The baseband on LA6 is actually LA4 so that is correct no change to modem so to speak so no variance in theroy to wifi speeds. Your best asking eyebee in his thread, when you say noticed is that "it felt like" kinda notice or did you test with speednet app or wifi analyzer of some sort.
Thanks for the reply,
I haven't run any wifi analyzer or anything like that, I just noticed it took longer for the web pages to load than when i was on XXLA4. I've switched back to Rocket ROM XXLA4 now and my internet speed is definitely faster than with the XXLA6 (well, just from observations there is a noticeable different in loading speeds)
I noticed the same thing whenever i flashed a ROM that was XXLA6 base, the wifi connection always appeared to be slower than the XXLA4 ROMS.
Hmm, maybe i should run some tests
My Samsung LA6 on wifi is almost instant, as it is with any other rom I've tested. The LA6 roms are based on LA4 baseband, and will show as such. Maybe try reflashing?
Try not to undervolt your Note, i find that undervolting causes wifi to deteriorate down. Use default setCPU voltages.
