I do not know the relevance or how it works, But XXJVO, and XXJVQ modems were the best in GPS and wifi for me.

I know there's a lot of modems out there and they don't all function the same in all areas. What I would like to know, what is the "best" method for determining what modem is best for you? I have an app called Network Signal that shows me my current network strength and I have speedtest.

I would start with those apps. Try them out for a day or so as well. Benchmarks and tests are meaningless if they don't do well in real world scenarios. Also, don't forget to test out phone calls, some are better than others when it comes to voice clarity.

The only way to tell which is best for you is to try it out for a few days. Note connection speed (varies by users online), call quality and volume, and battery usage. None of those can be determined in less than a few days.
Im using FroyoBread 23b, upto now I've been using wifi mainly cause i use the net on my phone alot and the battery doesn't even last a full day, so now im thinking about getting a 3G data plan. SO which uses more battery, wifi or 3g?
3G!!!! Drains battery like hell!
Vote For 3G
Drain battery a lot
3g ,it's very simple......., it's like you will make a normal phone call

1 more vote for 3G....
Is it just my phone or it is this model in general? I'm sitting next to the router and I only get 50% signal strength. If I move like 5 meters away, I often get around 25% signal strength. Previuously, I had HTC Desire and it used to catch the signal perfectly - 100% in the room where router is and 75-50% signal strength in other spots. Anyone facing same problem?

Did you try to use another modem ?
Well, no I did not but I have to admit that my modem has been changed before I got SGS. Can this be the problem?

Try to use devil kernel as I said, with devil kernel you will be able to catch stronger Wi-Fi: )

I live in Warren Michigan and have awesome service outside and on top floors of buildings or atleast by a Window but on main floors, basements and in buildings reception sucks but there is usually wifi so I switched my mobile network to 2g only and use wifi I get full bars in the basement now when I do this with 2g works just fine for text and making calls wifi does the rest.
Also I did a search to find similar post and didn't get anything but I did it through the phone app.

2G is always a good thing to enable when you're on WiFi. You don't need the fast internet due to WiFi and call quality is sufficient.
And you're saving a lot of battery life.

When my phone tries to connect to 3G it ends up with a very weak signal or no signal at all in parts of my home (also Michigan btw), so I created a Tasker profile to force 2G when I'm at home based on a GPS location, and as I already use Tasker to set volume, etc. when I arrive home this was a seamless fix.
Which will give you better battery life: leaving wifi on and using it for calls or leaving wifi off and using cell radio for calls? Thanks.
WiFi. Assuming you are using T-Mobile. WiFi calling also turns off the radio, thus improving life even more.
I will say however that this phone has exceptional talk time off of WiFi. Better than my last iPhone.

For me WiFi calling causes a nasty wakelock from IPService... I stopped using it after that point. I didn't notice any better battery life
