Is it unlikely the Nexus One will be overtaken soon?

As I said in another thread, I am probably going to sell my Desire and get an N1.
But I am wary of buying a 6 month old phone - especially with the rate android is moving forward at.
My question is - will the N1 be surpasses anytime soon with another google phone?
I know there are other phones out their with better specs (eg EVO) but I am talking about a real google phone, like the N1, which gets updates straight from google without anyone in between getting in the way.
It's probably a stupid question asking seeing as no one knows what companies are planning, but I guess I'm just looking for someone to convince me to take the plunge!

my guess is that the nexus one wil lbe the flagship phone, google's phone, for a full year. so look until january before a replacement comes along. even though the incredible and evo are here, the nexus one remains the developer phone. and i dont think that is going to change until january. just my opinion.

there is no doubt that eventually the N1 will be surpassed. I love my Nexus One, but one of the MAIN reasons I got the N1 was because I was gambling that Google would treat it like its own personal baby. Favoriting it, giving updates sooner then the rest of the phones, and hopefulness that because it was their baby they would suite Android to work around the Nexus One, ie. If 2.2 did not work on the Nexus One, they would have MADE it until it worked on the Nexus One.

To OP:
You're not buying a computer that "will not be surpassed", right? Because you know that new technology is out on a monthly basis.
So why do you expect anything different in a smartphone that is essentially nothing else but a mini computer?
Yes, in a year or maybe even 1/2 year you'll no longer be on par with the top dogs, and in 3 years your phone might probably be scrapped. So? That's how things work.. They develop.

Well as all I am looking for is a phone direct from google, then it is quite reasonable to expect it not to be surpassed each month.
I don't really care if a better android phone comes out, I will only have buyers remorse if a Nexus Two came out soon, but I suppose when that happens is anyones guess.

The guesses that are currently out say that there's no other Google phone planned for this year (at least), so if you want to buy Nexus because you want Google's Android Development Phone platform - you can count of trouble-free 1/2-year.
(but at the end of the year 1.3GHz phones might appear, and the next year can bring dual cores... So if you want to stay in the top pack, I guess 1 year is the phone's lifespan).

Am I the only one that isn't completely wowed by the Evo?
The front facing camera is nice, but there isn't a lot of software support and I can't see myself using it much. My laptop has a web cam built in, and I don't know if I have ever used it. None of the people I would be talking to would have a camera on their phone anyway.
The screen is nice and big, but the resolution is still the standard 800x480 so it's not displaying any more on screen than the N1, Desire, Incredible. Plus processor isn't any better. 4G is great, but availability is obviously limited.
I just don't think it's the huge improvement over the Desire and Incredible that everyone seems to believe. Plus the more I use Sense UI, the less I like it.

The way I see it is you need to look at 2 things in regards to these types of phones... the hardware... and the availability of updates to the software...
Hardware wise, The Nexus is completely sufficient. 1ghz processor, 512mb of RAM, a great camera, a nice AMOLED screen, and a very durable build quality...
Software wise, it's vanilla Android and is first in line for updates from google... All the competing phones have that (sense, blur) crap built-in that severely hinders the release process of updates ... they will ALWAYS get updates later than any phones with vanilla Android...
If you get an EVO or an Incredible or whatever else comes out in a few months... you will gain a few minor things as far as hardware spec differences, unless u want an over sized bulging screen in your pocket. The camera? Who cares it's a friggin' phone... 5mp is PLENTY. You already have to optimize even 5mp as a standard to even send as MMS. Anything over 1ghz is pretty much overkill for android in its current phase... it's a phone... it runs fast as hell it doesn't need a dual-core processor geeze.
I dunno... I really think the nexus is still the best bet people who want a touch-based phone and always want to be on the bleeding edge of android os developments.

Have to say, you have a Desire, which is essentially the Nexus One with a different skin, why look at the Nexus? I get your main point, the N1 already has Froyo, everyone else is waiting, but Froyo is being ported to the Desire as we speak. If you know a bit about modding and don't mind being a month or two behind, save some money and let the devs cook up a Froyo rom, and be assured that whatever comes out for the N1 will make it to the Desire. Hell, if the Dream and Magic can handle Eclair, anything is possible.
Side note, I have an N1 and installed Froyo, really liked it but went back to Cyanogen's 5.0.7. Many other N1 users have done the same. Once you get used to a custom rom, its hard to do without many of the bells and whistles you're used to, so I don't mind sitting and waiting for a customized Froyo.

A few reasons really:
1. I now really dislike sense.
2. HTC have gone to unnecessary lengths to prevent root access. We don't have a full root yet and we may never have it. Also they're are over 60 people who have bricked their desire and the cause is not known, this is slowing development.
3. I don't want it to end up like the hero, that was their last flagship device and its still on 1.6 for most people.
4. Fast updates - always good.
I'd just like to have vanilla android without having to risk bricking my phone really.

i've used Sense so much and i totally hate it as well. i'm so much happier with my nexus vanilla android experience. i do get why some people like sense, but for me personally, i dont like it.

In my opinion, the closest phone to 'overtake' the N1 will be the Samsung Galaxy S. The triangles that thing can push out is supposed to be very impressive. Other phones, to me, come down to preference (Evo for screen size and network, Desire for Sense). The N1 will probably be the first phone to get Gingerbread and even the update after that at least.
We'll see 1ghz phones become more common before a bump in processor speed happens, I feel. The N1's a nice phone and worth the money.

you are not alone. the EVO just doesnt wow me either. when 1.5gHz phones come out, then maybe i'll ditch the nexus. but the current hardware (evo and incredible) are so similar to the nexus, they are all cousins and in the same league. nexus gets the newest updates and has best build quality, so some would say its actually the better of the 3.

If you haven't bought one by now, I would hold off. Expect HTC leaks to start up again for their new lineup for next year.
It also depends on how you plan to use the phone.

I am not too worried about cpu muscle. Everything I do on the N1 happens pretty much instantly. That a more potent cpu might load something faster as can be measured by testing equipment doesnt matter to me. Now if those new dual cores bring optimizations to improve battery life that might catch my eye but brute stength, nah. I really dont see what the evo or incredible bring to the table for me outside of the larger screen on the evo. Even there I recently handled an X10 and to my mind that is about the perfect screen size, I find the evo just a wee bit clunky in the hand. To be honest there is no announced handset in the works that even slightly peaks my interest. I'm guessing there will be nothing that catches my eye until the hollidays at the earliest. Personally I was hoping that the N2 (following in the fully unlocked steps of the N1) might be seeing the light of day around then.
edit.... I'm basing my feelings on the size of the evo on handling the HD2, I have not had an evo in hand.

I agree, some people are too obsessed with benchmarks imo. The phone does everything you want pretty much instantly, and there's not many processor intensive apps for android anyway.

evo is great except:
1) sprint only
2) contract only
What would make it better than the nexus:
1) simple way to root.
2) runs standard Cyanogen or AOSP, no proprietary stuff like sense.
3) supports GSM
I waited three years before jumping in, loved android right from when it was announced. The Nexus one pretty much has no challengers for the throne yet. A true open phone.

Take it with a grain of salt, but when I went to a local TMo store to get a SIM for my wife's new N1, I was asking about when they think they might be getting the N1 in (seeing as there's already some 3rd party places selling the N1).
I was told they probably won't be getting a google phone in until the Nexus TWO, sometime in November of THIS year.
My take on it is this; If it's something you want, get it now and enjoy it. There is ALWAYS something better, faster, sleeker and that will cost less coming right around the corner.

If the N1 had a touch screen that wasn't so terrible I'd really want for nothing. Maybe some better battery life..

If you're talking about a straight Google phone unlocked, then yes, one will be out this year. Earlier in the year, someone high up in Motorola announced they were working with Google to create a straight-to-consumer phone. I assume this will be the Nexus Two. I'll look for links to it and reply with them.

I agree... The Nexus S is so... Not worthy of being the predecessor to the Nexus One! The Nexus was ahead of its time.
Google is using gingerbread as a selling point and all the Nexus S is, is their new cash cow. Bull ****!

I want something that's truly an upgrade to play with before I give up my N1 and something like this LG would be the ticket.

I tried to jump on the NS ship... it's hard with the Galaxy s2, Optimus2x, playstation phone and the olympus all coming soon..

As long as I can root and sideload, I agree. I'm rooted but otherwise stock now, and with the LG I'd have a reason to flash custom ROMs. The NS isn't much of an upgrade. This LG certainly is. Can't wait to see what else is announced soon.

Undoubtedly. You and I are really rather fortunate to have such a fine android experience on AT&T. As I also own two Captivates, I'm regulalry reminded of this small blessing. Subsequently, I much prefer unlocked phones

haven't read much about it either...this LG is the first to get my real attention given the potential for AT&T compatibility

So it will be available in late jan 2011 in asia? this is the real deal,this is exactly how i feel when i bought a true game changer in Nexus 1
Just hoping that ces 2011 will have more devices like this.

My only comment is: can this really be considered a smartphone? Or as LG would say "or is it something better?"

Have to say this is the first one that has piqued any real post n1 interest for me so far, the ns barely garnered a glance. Like others I see this as just the first of an unknown number of dual core smartphones that should be announced soon and I will have to weigh in the merits of those devices as well. Whatever I choose a good portion of my purchasing decision will be based on the amount of support here. Beats any OEM update schedule.

Device looks awesome. I see it is a LCD screen. No comment on the type. Black levels seem crappy. I'm really spoiled by AMOLED.
I'm sure the device looks crisper and deeper in person. The screenshots looked make the phone look dull.

yeah i'm not feeling the screen,it looks kind of washed out but it makes up for it with everything else

Samsung seems to want to hold us all hostage with the AMOLED screen. We may need to get used to S-LCD if we want to get away from their cheap build quality, etc..
I'd rather have AMOLED than LCD, but not at the cost of everything else..
If it takes going with LCD to get the next Nexus made by, for instance, HTC, I can live with that. Especially if it's an HD screen

Yawp im just waiting on an HTC device with those kinda specs! Until then I will prolly cop a Nexus S just cause and end up selling it or giving it to my lil bro..

IS not that popular based on number of posts?

I busted up my Legend and I got a Nexus S as a replacement. This I returned because I didn't like it much, mostly because I didn't like the way it felt in my hand. (Too plasticy)
Now I'm in the market for a new Android phone and the IS is a potential new phone. But purely based on the number of posts here and the activity level in these posts, the IS is NOT a popular phone. What's up?

The two major reasons I think are:
This thing is very very new and it's only available in Europe at the moment.
If it's not popular, so what. Do you like it? If you don't, then don't buy it.
You have a valid point though if you buy a popular device, there will almost certain be lots of developing for it.
On the other hand this thing looks nice and techy, so I think/hope developers will like this thing.
Meh, the only major reason for me not to buy it was the locked bootloader, but it'll get cracked somehow.
Track and traced my order and the driver is on the way! Can't wait for that doorbell to ring

Right now the phone is still pretty new and it's only being sold overseas. This phone will take off more once it lands on Verizon in the states. Plus if you already have a phone that came out within the last year this phone wouldn't be that much of an upgrade. Plus a lot of people might be waiting to make their next jump to a dual core phone.

The NAM 3G version is going to launch on Virgin Mobile Canada sometime in the next month or two. Note that the Verizon version would be CDMA and should probably get a distinct subforum unto itself.

I'm getting the Indridible S, so that's settled. BUT it's because my Legend is busted. If it was still usable, I would have kept it. The Incredible S is just the only viable option right now.

Nexus S : Don't like the contruction, too much plastic, it's too "slippery" in the hands. My MAIN gripe is that they've moved the back button farthest away and it's the button you use the most.
Optimus 2X : Sorry, this is an ugly UGLY phone.The back looks like it something from 1994.
Xperia Arc : Too big, lovely phone.
Desire HD : Too big

I think this is an important point. Any one who has a higher end existing phone will be more likely to go for the dual cores. From what I've seen there isn't a big difference between the Desire and Incredible S prices compared to the new LG dual core phone, so who is going to buy a single core phone if that's the case? I would be happy with an Incredible or Desire S, but at a lower price than is currently being asked for... Let the prices start dropping now please.... I want a new cheap phone!

I had a T Mobile band Nexus One and didn't have any intentions of getting a new phone unless it was a major upgrade over the Nexus One. (Probably would have made the Pyramid or T Mobile GX2 my next phone this summer) Unfortunately I broke my Nexus One so the Incredible S was the best option for me at the moment. I still want a dual core phone but instead of making the jump this summer I'll probably make the jump early next year.

Waiting for some next-gen dualcore devices isn't a bad idea.
But the technology is still very new, and I would like to see the actual improvement of the use experience. Afaik apps have to be updated to support dualcore. Until I SEE something truly amazing, a significant speed change in the browsers rendering or something like that. Why would I need dualcore? Of course higher numbers are cool. But if it were to be same speed, more eyecandy. I'm perfectly happy with a single core.
It does what I wan't and it does it fast. Why dual core? Do we need it yet?

Is this phone much of an upgrade over the Desire? Am due a new phone but don't want to make the price jump to a dual core yet.

Spec wise the Incredible S is a tad bit better but I don't think it's a big upgrade over the Desire.

You're right. There isn't a big need for dual core right now. The only real advantage I see to having dual core now is for the gaming aspect, but the high end game market is still in the early stages. As far everyday things like web, email, face book, you tube, Pandora, etc a single core phone does just fine.

If you have to get a phone now the Incredible S would be a good choice. I had a Nexus One, which is similar to the Desire, and went to an Incredible S. I was looking at the Nexus S also, but I prefer the build quality of HTC phones over the Samsung phones. Just a personal preference.

[Q] What's next? Life after the Captivate...

I figure many of us are facing the same dilemma here...
Like many of you, the Captivate was my first Android phone. Being an AT&T customer, it was my (our) only choice back in the summer of 2010 and I (we) jumped on it and, besides some ocassional frustrations, haven't looked back since (other than "GPS-Gate", I've (we've) been extremely happy with the "Cappy").
In March I'll (we'll) be eligible for an upgrade with AT&T and I'm (we're) starting to wrestle with the question of what to do next...
Should I (we) stay loyal to AT&T and see what phones they have available/will soon be availble? The SGSII (Skyrocket) looks good, but there's bound to be something new available in a couple of months.
Or, should I (we) jump ship to another carrier (Verizon, T-Mo, Sprint) and have an even better selection of phones to choose from?
So, do any of you have any suggestions or advice? What are you going to do when your contract is up with AT&T? Is Verizon, T-Mobile, or "insert-carrier-name-here" a better carrier to be with (pricing, selection, service, coverage, etc.) than AT&T? Anyone have any experience with the other carriers you could share? Or, is it best to sit tight until after February and see what new phones are on the horizon (SGSIII, something else)???
Ultimately, the plan is to do something within the next 3 to 6 months...just not sure what the right move would be.

I keep hoping for the Galaxy Nexus, but its not looking too promising. Of whats coming out as of now what I like the best, and what I find the most intriguing is the Sony Xperia Ion. 1.6 dual-core, 12MP camera, 4.7 inch "Bravia HD" LED backlit LCD. Build quality is supposedly worlds ahead of current Xperias. Its the new phone to usher in a new era of "Sony" phones, no more "sony ericsson". Oh and its playstation certified too, and this will blow your mind, a DEDICATED CAMERA BUTTON! I really don't get how manufacturers are so forgetful to include this one useful button.
Hope that helps. there is one downside to this phone however. Its running gingerbread. I was really hoping to see some newer ICS phones with no buttons at CES, but sadly they were all gingerbread. I don't get this really. Its like if HP released a whole line of laptops with Vista on them! Honestly we all know now after 2 years don't buy an android phone with an outdated version of the OS that promises an "upgrade" because you'll be waiting a while, in fact by the time you get your update, it'll be outdated itsself. Me personally I know next I'd like to get a phone I can leave stock and be happy with it, so I'd prefer to have something with ICS pre-installed on it. But as for the Xperia Ion, its still a bit before its released from my understanding, and the one they had at CES was pre-production and actually had ericsson branding on it, so maybe they'll update it before it launches.

I'm looking at that galaxy note personally. Its rumored to be released on Feb 18 here in the states, I'm probably going to wait for mobile congress convention that happens late in Feb because quite a few new phones should be released.
As for carriers I think they are all pretty much the same. Sprint won't have unlimited once they go lte so it will be just like att and Verizon and such

As for me, if a phone has Mms, Phone and GPS, it's enough.But the GPS of Captivate in china is not promising. It can only be accurate to 10m in China. So i also wanna change a phone in several months. My first Android phone is Milestone.Its GPS is excellent. So i may choose Motorola. But as we all know, the screen is worse. It's not cool. I also feel puzzled.

Well being 6'4 makes the note not that big and it will fit just fine in any pants that I wear.

I have the exact same problem but even worse, I am eligible right now! I have to stay on AT&T because it is what my company uses. My cappy is actually running really nice right now on Saurom KK4 so I can hold on if I must. A couple people at work have the Skyrocket and it is nice but I am very hesitant to get a Touchwiz phone on AT&T again as the update delays are ridiculous. I also have a Xoom which is a GED and nice to have vanilla ICS already. I would love a Nexus but don't see that out will ever come to this carrier. At this point I am waiting to see what the Skyrocket HD looks like. I can't wait for the GS3 because even if it will be announced soon we all know how long it will take to come here. I work with someone with an imported Note and it is really nice but a little too big considering I also have a tablet. I just don't get exited about any other phones but I really want a new gadget. Quite the dilemma...

I've been converted
Waiting for Lumia 900. I've been converted and promised my kids the Captivate so I don't have to buy them an ipod.

After getting somewhat burned by the Captivate, is anyone hesitant to get another Samsung phone? Also, if you're waiting for the SGS3, are you concerned at all about getting it right after launch without letting it get "tested" in the marketplace first? I mean, we know what it felt like to be early-adopters with the Captivate and having the accompanying headaches that came as a result... Not sure I'm in a hurry to be in that position again (actually, I just got the Asus Transformer Prime and I'm now having a new set of GPS issues)...
Also, I suppose we'll have to just wait and see, but has anyone heard rumors of any Samsung-killers being announced next month?

My contract is up in March as well. SGS2 is nice, but when I get it, it'll already be several months old so I'm going to try looking forward and perhaps waiting. We'll see when March comes around. I've been happy with my Captivate but I'd really like a phone where GPS worked and something I'd be happy with just root and not have to resort to other ROMs to be satisfied with.

I don't know which ROM he's referring to specifically, but I'm on TeamHacksung's ICS (Build 15). The GPS locks on sooo quickly and is fairly accurate to boot. It's definitely breathed new life into my Cap and it'll make it easier to wait until March for a new phone.
As for the OP's question, I will say that I'm not sure, but these seem to be my options so far:
Galaxy Note: It's nice spec-wise, but I'm going to have to play with it in person to see if I can handle a 5.3" phone. No phallic jokes please
Galaxy Nexus: I know we don't have a release date, but there is always the (expensive) option of buying the international version. After getting burned by Samsung/AT&T's incredibly delayed updates, I'm finding I really want a stock Google experience, especially with ICS out now. There are always the amazing devs to turn to, but it can be a frustrating experience sometimes.
ASUS PadFone: A phone that also plugs into a tablet form factor? YES, please! Unfortunately, no release date or carrier announcement, but I would jump on this in a second.
SGS 2 or Skyrocket: While these are "old" tech, they're still really nice dual core phones. I think the jump from single to dual will be a lot more noticeable than dual to quad in terms of experience. Plus they should be even cheaper by the time I upgrade and the dev support (for the SGS2, at least) is awesome.
Jump to another carrier: unfortunately, AT&T gives the best company discount for me, so jumping carriers isn't really an option, but you never know.
Other phone: I'll probably end up researching other phones, but I've been partial to Samsung just because they do make great phones. But I won't rule out something amazing coming from Sony/HTC/Asus in the next few months.
So in short, I have no idea!

After a year and a half with the original cappy, I've moved on to the Captivate Glide because I like physical keyboards. I am considering the Note depending on what I hear when its released, but I also plan to wait for the SGS III before making a decision on my next phone.

I have one of the first build Cappy's and I've LOVED every min of owning it. I know the time is coming soon for me too. I'll be staying with AT&T, I've been really happy with the service here in Seattle. There are 3 devices that have my eye. The Sony Ion, The SGSIII, and the Nexus Prime. All of which have some amazing specs.
In my opinion, Samsung had some issues with the GPS, and, (IMHO) had some bad timing on the software releases. Honestly that didn't really affect me much, I ran custom ROM's from the moment they were released, and regardless of which device I choose, I'll do the same with it. I've run Froyo/GB and now ICS as soon as the dev's did their magic. And will ALWAYS do the same whichever device I choose. Actually, I just might choose a device the stands to get amazing dev response just for the longevity

I personally think the Galaxy Note would be heavenly . I don't use my cappy as a phone but more as a pmp (personal media player) and think a 5" pmp would be heaven.

Vivid... or a next-gen 2012 phone?

Since I have to stick with my choice for the next 2years. I want some "promise" that it will last until then...
Vivid, is still using S3, a 2011's technology which probably become "too old" already by the end of 2012.
Quad-core isnt necessary for me, a powerful dual-core like "Krait" is enough, 4.5" screen and SD slot is a must. I don't care much about battery life, since I always close to the power sources, but having more battery as reserve is better.
Is there any chance for Vivid after upgraded to ICS to boost itself? and how much is it?
Could it compete with HTC one X, XL, Huawei Ascend D quad, D1...?
These devices will ship within 2-3months and if it cost not more than 600$, i would grab one.
so, the question is...
Can Vivid still compete with other next-gen phone (One X,S, Huawei D1, Dquad....) or I should wait for those next-gen phone?

If in the states and on at&t,htc one...not your cup of tea,no sdcard,screen is big enough,internal battery(1800mAh) I really dont see the need to upgrade if not needed,vivid is a solid device with imo more options,sdcard slot,marginal screen difference(.2 dif) a1.5 processor...ics should vamp up the vivid considerably after all the bloatware,ciq and other loggers are removed oh and hopefully the update doesnt relock the bootloader...not sure if it could but that would just blow chunks if it does....just my opinion....but ultimately its your money and your decision

I think the vivid could still compete with some of those newer phones if it keeps being supported. The HTC One line isn't going to have any expandable memory so thats one advantage the vivid has over those for what you need. Not to sure about the Huawei phones. I think this is their first time trying to push a more high end phone so might wanna wait till they come out and get a chance to hear some feedback on them. They do look pretty decent though.

forgot to mention that i'm outside US and still using blessed Milestone1.
beside of extremely lacking of memory storage, it's still very useful with lastest custom rom .

I was honestly thinking about getting the one X but different processor for the AT&T version means that we won't be able to use the International ROMs, correct? There are great devs here in the USA, quoted company included , but that was one thing I really loved about having the Inspire. The development section for the DHD was huge and still is actually. I'm fairly certain I'm going to stick with the Vivid for awhile, unless my company lets me upgrade early again, like I did to get the Vivid.

Gotcha. I just assumed the different CPUs would kill any chance of cross development on the 2 devices. I'll probably still check to see if I can upgrade or not. My company has strange policies on upgrading. I got the Captivate in Aug. 2010, upgraded to the Inspire in Feb. 2011, and was able to upgrade again to the Vivid on launch weekend. But some people have to wait a full 18 months or 2 years. I'm not complaining, I just don't understand it.

The international One X comes with 32gb of storage, now if it does indeed has all 32gb available, then the lack of external sd might not be as big of an issue. However, that is a different story for the US 16gb pos...

hahahah, give the guy a break, the WCX Illuminati series does ridiculously quick bug fixes and excellent performance, the praise is well deserved

In terms of software, I don't see any reason not to keep using Vivid for awhile longer. The hardware is also powerful enough to handle most anything for the immediate future.
The top of the line phones aren't going to be that much of an upgrade at the moment, especially considering almost no mobile software is optimized for quad-core processors.
Until optimized software is released, you may actually see a performance hit on some of these upcoming quad-core phones, and there's also the power consumption issue if you're running demanding apps.

I'm looking forward to HTC one It looks so cool.

Phone's been out almost 5 months and I'm noy bored yet. ICS coming in about a month, so it shoud be good for another 6 months, right on time for the next upgrade on my second line. By then shoud have some quadcore jelly bean, 2500mah, >4.5" goodness...
