IM+ question and battery life - HD7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have borrowed an HD7 from a friend running the absolute latest Mango beta I believe - beta 2 I think.
Anyway, I want to be always online with Google Talk ala Android. I see it has options for push notifications and running under lock screen. I dont really get it. I want the best battery life I can get, but I want notifications as quickly as possible when someone sends me a message. I have the live tile pinned to my home screen too, but it seems to take a little while to get a notification.
Can anyone help a bit with this stuff please.

If you are using Mango beta2. Then under Messages you will find threads. From there you can be online with Windows Live Messenger and it is the best. Instant notifications and toast.

Push notifications are dependant on IM+ sending them to Microsoft in a timely manner, and for Microsoft to send them to your phone in a timely manner.
This is not something you can control unfortunately. Sometimes they get to your phone instantly, sometimes they don't. Despite it being called 'push' notifications, its not always on and always waiting for notifications. That would eat up too much battery life. Best thing to do would be to wait for Mango to finally come out, and for IM+ to be updated to support true background multitasking so that it can send you more instant notifications.

Hmm, interesting, didnt know it went through Microsoft. What about the whole running under screen lock business. Does that help?
Thanks

Running under lockscreen would only continue to drain the battery as if you phone was on and actively pulling/sending data. So don't expect your phone to last too long with it on.
That being said, you should definitely see an improvement in notification response time since the app is open and actively pinging the server for new messages. Best case it should notify you as quickly as it can download the latest IM from whoever talks to you.
And then there is the fact that if you leave it on under lockscreen, in order for that to operate properly, you need to open the app every time right before you put the phone into standby. Otherwise, the app closes/freezes when you do anything else with the phone. Or you can simply do nothing with you phone and leave IM+ open at all times... but then it wouldn't be much of a phone. XD

SMS Scheduling Software?

I would like to set my Kaiser to send pre-written text messages at specific times, does anyone have any idea about any software that does this? Or anyway to do it on the phone now?
For example, next week, I'll be traveling. I would like to write a text wishing my girlfriend a happy birthday, and then have my phone send it to her at 8AM her time, which will be 3AM my time.
Or, as another example, being able to set it so to send other people I work with reminder texts, about deadlines or whatnot, without my having to keep track of doing it myself.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

you are in luck because I have found this recently for my kaiser and it works great. Does scheduling and group texting and you can save the groups too.
Ah, that's brilliant, I'll give it a try.
Muchas Gracias!!
How do I install this.

OK, this is frustrating as hell, do any of you professionals have any ideas??
Each night, I send three to five messages to the same person, say at 0300, 0305, 0310, and 0315.
Almost universally, the first message is delivered, as I can see it crossed off in the Scheduled Messages section of PowerSMS, and it also appears in the Messaging program as sent.
However, the remaining messages, although crossed off as sent in PowerSMS, do not appear to have been sent, and do not appear in the Messaging program as sent?
Any ideas? This is the sole reason I bought PowerSMS--to send scheduled messages to the same person, but it's only sending the first one.
I've tried everything. Soft resets. 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 minutes between messages. Leaving PowerSMS minimized. Closing it entirely. Leaving it open on the desktop. Plugging the phone in, leaving it unplugged but with plenty of power. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it sends a few messages. Most times, it doesn't.
Frankly, this is annoying. The phone works. Messages coming and going are not an issue, EXCEPT when PowerSMS is involved in sending them.
I posted much of this on the developer's site, and his only comment was: "That seems odd, and I don't have an answer for you right off the bat because the behavior is unpredictable. Does it help if you space the messages out a bit more (i.e. try to send them 15 minutes apart instead of 5)? Also, can you soft-reset your device to ensure the memory is clean and nothing else is running in the background? Then see if you can get it to send yourself 3 messages in a row 10-15 minutes apart. One guess is this *may* be related to the power management features of the device. It gets woken up at a certain time, sends the message and goes back to sleep and tries to wake up too quickly. Maybe this is causing the problem?"
Anyone here have any thoughts? What he says makes sense, but I have no idea where to go from there.
What version are you using? The newest version is 1.3 and it may fix the issues.

Trillian beta for Android w/Push

http://www.trillian.im/learn/tour-android.html
Trillian for Android beta. It's really nice so far, been using it for a few days.
Most important thing to me is push notifications. While it doesn't indicate that it has push notifications, it most certainly does. In the settings make sure you check Push Email notifications and battery saving mode (this is how I have it configured). Don't worry, if you have Froyo you won't get any e-mails, it'll just push. I've tested it from another AIM app. On the home screen with the screen off I get IM's instantly every time I've tried it, with no e-mails. This is the first developer app I've personally seem that uses push.
It doesn't seem to poll or use the battery any. I've run it every day with AIM and Facebook chat and my spare parts doesn't show it using the battery and neither does my standard battery info section.
Seems pretty awesome so far. I haven't shut it off yet. Hopefully everyone else's experience is the same.
I've used trillian on my desktop for years, and I've had the beta on my since I got it back in August. The only gripe I have is that if you leave MSN running on your computer, and you sign in on Trillian from your phone, it wipes your display picture and your display theme.
** edit - n/m it loaded fine since I have Cognition/Rooted etc.
Looks awesome - have to see how the battery life is on the phone with it loaded.

Yes, it appears to be using C2DM. I wasn't aware Beejive was using it though, but that's good. More developers need to get on board. Ideally the IM app should NEVER poll or communicate to the server in any way. Run it in the background but just so it opens quicker. Use Push to receive messages.
man thats the one thing I miss about my iphone was real push notifications.
Is Beejive any good compared to this? I currently use Meebo, but would love to try another messenger that supports push in 2.2
i'm using trillian, with legend 2.2. is it c2dm really works? because it's still appear in the running app. which mean still running in the background (also app still appear in the notification bar). i was thinking, if c2dm works well, this app shoud be not appear in the running app, right? should i must kill this app, to make c2dm works? No. It works. The icon in the notification bar is to remind you it's running and for easy access to the app. Don't mess with anything.
I wasted money on buying this app, just figured out, it was this draining my battery. about 6% an hour vs 1% with it off.

It's going to drain your battery having something polling for new messages if you aren't on Android 2.2 and have push enabled.
I was on 2.2 and now on 2.3, still drains regardless, push or not whatever...

how to make sure all your apps are closed

How do you know when an app is completely closed since there's no task manager. Cause I've noticed that even if you hit the home key if you hit the back key afterwards it will still go to your open apps. Is there a key you can hold that will close down all applications.
WP7 doesn't multitask, so you will only have one app running at a time -- except, perhaps, if you're playing music via Zune.
When you hit back, what you're seeing is a recovery from something MS call 'tombstoning', which is saving the state of an app before shutting it down, and restoring the app back to where it was once you restart it.
If you run a game, you'll probably notice a delay after you hit 'back', while it reloads.
thanks for the info. I see what you mean.
How are you multitaskign Zune? If I leave zune in any way whetehr back, home or clickign on a text it shuts it down
Well atleast we don't have to worry about apps draining battery in the back ground.... Just trying to look at the bright side
So far the only things I'm disappointed is by the bad quality videos on YouTube, no multitask, and I can't use a regular mp3 song as a ringtone

You can't, no. There was talk about being able to buy ringtones from the marketplace, but I don't think the users would accept that. I'd probably expect it to come with the update in January.

NOt sure that this will come in Jan. I think it's a legal thing to do with the way Zune Pass is licensed (which is only to play music - not use it as a ringtone)...
this is just from word of mouth - but seems to make sense....
I don't mind if it won't let me use Pass music as a ringtone, I'd like to put my own custom sound in there, so WP7 doesn't end up like iPhone where almost everyone has the same ringer, and when a phone goes off everyone reaches for their phone.
Even the iPhone allows for custom ringtones, you just have to load them through iTunes. I really hope Microsoft implements custom ringtones soon. I also hope that they, unlike the iPhone, allow for custom notification tones as well. On the iPhone you have to SSH in and replace the files manually.

Hi everyone,
We (Viber) are just as excited as you are for our new beta.
We're thankful for your feedbacks, and hoping you are finding it useful!
A few messages and clarifications:
1. Although I'm following this thread, we would like to ask you to post all your technical issues and suggestions in our official Android webpage: blog.viber.com/viber-beta-support
2. For those who are not receiving the code or getting the error message saying they need to subscribe: the only way for you to successfully install our beta is to have subscribed, and wait for our official invitation email. Otherwise your email and number won't have been activated, thus you're blocked (we didn't want our .APK to simply be open to EVERYONE in the world). Please wait patiently. It might take up to a week, but you should eventually receive the email and use it freely.
3. If you haven't subscribed in the official way yet, you can still do it here and wait for our email: eepurl.com/bW1Ln
For other info or questions, I'm here!
Best regards,
Viber.
I registered even before december last year and didnt get a beta invite yet... so probably its still too early to get really excited, as there are thousands of people that registered later... especially over the last time.
Makes only sense of course if they send out the codes in the order as people registered.
EDIT:
I have to correct myself. i never got an invite email from viber, but using the email i used back then to subscribe i could register here http://www.viber.com/android-beta/ without any problems. i just had to try some email addresses as i didnt know anymore which one i used back then. I didnt recive a sms but the activation call worked without any problems.
So yeah, even if you didnt get an invitation mail it might work. And YES, i checked my spamfolder before!

As the service is always running in the background anyway, there is simply no need to show the symbol all the time.

I found a problem VIBER , when someone calls me when i try to Accept the call i have to touch the Accept button and wait a little then swipe it to right side, if i swipe immediately the call is Rejected and doesnt inform the other side (the caller) that i Rejected his call.

Anyone else HATE the new grouped notifications in the API4 update?

I absolutely can not stand the new grouped notifications and I have spent so much time trying to find some way to turn it off, it makes the status shade completely useless for quick glance checking, its most annoying with facebook messenger where if you get a single message it will register the "chat head" service and the message as multiple notifications for the messenger app and you have to expand it to see who said what.
Anyone else?
Anyone by chance know any way to turn it off?

I hate it so so much
I absolutely love the new notification grouping lol
I am with all of you, do not like the grouped settings, would love it if someone finds the setting to turn it off, I have been looking but cannot find it.
Deja Vu all over again.
I dont get Samsung, they always take something nice and make it crap. Just seems like they were trying to be apple to much. Does anyone remember when the s5 and note 4 came out they advertised the crap out of having a removable battery and expendable storage?? But the very next year they eliminate both those features and water resistantance(s5). Now it's locked bootloaders Which blows. they rushing quality control to beat Apples new release, Like they made a very good comeback with the s7 and s7 edge. I just dont get why they went to far from their roots, why would you want to be like apple? They mess things ups pretty good on their own every year.
Don't know if it helps anyone, but Samsung updated the Good Lock app to work with the Note 7. It doesn't group up the notifications and you can get rid of the white color and have the notifications match your UI better. Anyone that isn't familiar with it, it's an alternative lock screen and notification app that makes both closer to stock android. There are lots of settings to play with and you can customize the colors of everything in the notification shade. Also adds some really nice lock screen effects. It's on the galaxy app store.
EDIT: Apparently they updated it again and you can set each individual color in your routines to be literally any color you want. Combined with the lack of grouped notifications, this app is basically perfect.
It's terrible and definitely a step backward in the evolution of the notification system. It might as well just not tell you anything and make you open each app to see what the notification is.

Holy ****. It actually made me wish my phone would catch fire just so I didn't have to use it. I couldn't get it uninstalled fast enough. On the bright side, grouped notifications don't seem quite so bad now.
This is one of the reason I may be swapping this out for the v20. This bugs me more than any other issue with the phone, including constantly signal dropping.

I'm with you man. I do t know what else I can do now, other than deal with LG's buggy, crap UI. At least they don't sell out and repeatedly botch their phones hardware.

Dont really like it. Sucks there no options to turn ot on and off. It reminds me of windows when it groups all your tabs together.
Now on windows i like it but on the phone i dont think its all that.
Also hate how they made the notify bar so flat and dull. It look way better before
I want to know why the goddamn wifi calling preferences is stuck there unless you turn it off. Or for that matter ANY application. None of them should ever stay there forever. Maybe one exception if you have a vpn connected, but it should go away when it is closed and most of them do not. Otherwise I kind of like the grouping.
I'm one of the few that like it lol

I like it a lot. Less clutter. Also, all you have to do is tap the notification to get it to expand.
I'm one person among the few whom "Really Really LIKE it" !
Anyone else still getting notifications for open wifi when the option is turned off?
The grouped notifications wouldn't be so bad if they didn't make the bar on the drop down that ugly gray color.

YEs, I've noticed that.
I finally have my V2 in hand and as much as I thought I would really dislike the green battery...it isn't that bad. Still can't stand the grouped notifications, though.

They broke the software lol. Luckily the sim slot on my phone died, so I got a new v2 and rooted it immediately

I've had that problem since my Galaxy S6 actually. I always keep the setting to show notifications for open WiFi off, but I still get them on my phone. It's strange because it doesn't seem to show notifications for every open WiFi network, but only with some networks. (I've actually noticed it more on the NYC subway for some reason. Somehow whatever network they have down there can override the phone's settings and show a notification.) I usually just turn my WiFi off if I'm going to be out and about and that stops the problem.
