[Q] SDCARD shows the USB Storage not the SDCard - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Captivate has been rebooting itself so I got a "new" (used) Captivate to see if its a hardware problem.
Installed Serendipity VII.
Then I moved the sim card and the sdcard to the 2nd phone it from root explorer the sdcard is showing the usb storage and not the sdcard.
I cleared the cache and rebooted again and still no SD Card. The phone knows when its not present as when I leave the card out it doesn't show anything.
So then I went back to my flakey phone and put the sim and sdcard back there, and all is ok.
So the 2nd phone is that a hardware problem or does anyone have any idea what to try?

You try formating the card?

Interesting. I'm assuming you are looking at the "external_SD" folder and you are seeing your internal memory? I would try to reflash jf6 then your preferred rom and check again. I know its an issue with some kernels on GB bootloaders trying to see the SD card. What rom is the fubar phone on?

If its a warranty replacement phone and you haven't flashed anything, make them replace it again.

[Q] How to Root without internal or external SD card mounted?

Like the topic says I need to root my phone without internal or external SD card access.
I would like to do this so I can try to backup my nv_user and related files before I try another partition since I have had no luck finding a solution to being able to mount my external or internal sd cards.
I have the "Mount Point absent or incorrect." error dialog showing up in my status bar.
I tried searching for solutions to both problems but Have been unlucky so far.
For sgs u definitely have a internal sd.
you definitely have an internal sd-card. however if you want to do it without or have problems with it you can flash a kernel+su with odin: thread on samdroid
cheers, jo

Phone says neither them are mounted. Same as in the recovery mode. When I check the sd card and memory in the settings menu both are unavailable. It says I am running off 2 gigs of system memory.
So yes I have an internal sd card. It just won't mount and in recovery mode it won't be found.
That's why I said it wouldn't mount. Not that it didn't exist.
I trying not to flash the phone until I can make a back up of thee nvdata files. So I will check the kernel flash and hopefully it won't effect the nvdata. But I'm guessing it does.
I should have stated a different Title for this thread as my real problem is either Int/Ext SD card corruption or something else deeper within the phone.
I will try formatting it with ubuntu like someone else suggested. That will have to wait until I get home and take a bit since I have no linux experience.
Also, the memory *2gb is showing is labelled as Internal Phone Storage.
Thanks
I'm assuming this has to do with the fact that your phone wont flash anyfirmware after JPC right?
Let me know how it goes.
I can flash but it took some messing around. None of the other firmwares even the stock bell one are stable now and I have no access to either the int or ext sd card. Just the 2gb internal non-sd memory. And after JPC my signal is pretty messed up.
My (wifes) phone now also says internal sd card unavailable.
Is there a solution to this? Happened after I upgraded from JH2 to JM6. The same upgraded process worked on my phone (followed the guide exactly).
Guys, just have a look around these forums or use the search button. This is the most common issue with the I9000M and there is no need for another thread about it.

[Q] With froyo my sdcard won't work

So here is my story.
I was originally on jm9.
Flashed to jp6 and my sdcard wont work. (internal and external). After a little messing around with no luck decided to install jpm.
Same problem, no sd card.
So I decided to install jpm with repartition in the hopes that would fully reset things.
Bricked phone.
Installed jm8 in the hopes that jm9 was the issue (the instruction do say install from jm8)
Sd card works.
Now I just installed jpm and AGAIN no sd card.
These are the only 2 froyo's I have tried and both experience the same issue.
Anyone else had this problem? Anyone know what may be causing it?
I am just about to reflash jm8 and wipe the sd cards to see if that is the issue but I am unhopeful, pressing format in the phone menu does nothing.
Just to clarify it happens with internal and external sd cards AND i cannot get into mass storage mode (linux just shows 2 empty drives).
Any help greatly appreciated, other than this im loving froyo. no other problems as far as i can tell..
thanks
Ok, I got it to work after 2 days of stress!!!
All that was needed was a flash into jm8 to allow mass storage then a reformat of the sd card. I dont see how this affected my phone so much, but it did.
I can clarify flashing from jm9 is OK.
Loving froyo the few added features are awesome..

How to mount SD card using clockwork or is SD card just corrupt?

Using a Bell i9000M, Doc Froyo XWJPA V7.5
I was using my phone and all of a sudden got a lot of force closes. Tried to reboot and now its stuck on the first Galaxy S screen. I went in to Clockwork and tried to restore from nandriod but nothing changed.
So now, im wondering if the SD card is corrupt. Or maybe I just dont know how to mount the SD card to transfer files using Clockwork.
Please help. I called Bell and theyre no help - they want me to send the phone into service and I probably wont see it for a few weeks, which sucks cause I need this phone for work.
When I plug in to Windows, it recognizes the drives but says insert CD when I click. Al I need to do is mount the SD card.
Please help and thanks in advance.
Have the same problem but its on the g tab after installing my first rom "Vegan" 5.1
it crashed and now is in a boot loop, could anyone help.

Internal SD card trouble

I just flashed serendipity 6.4 and it runs very very well. However since flashing, my pc has not recognized my internal SD card. The external sd card immediately pops up when connected. I can't access it from my pc at all, but when just on my phone, I can browse the file in astro. I already tried changing the it to mass storage in the usb settings. Any tips?
Check to make sure its mounted.
Settings>sd card and storage> internal sd
Thats the only thing I got.

If the above doesn't work, go into recovery and try and mount SD cards from there and see what it does. If it still doesnt mount flash to stock and get it warranty replaced
Im gonna try flashing back to stock and see if it recognizes. It should... hopefully. thanks
Next time, post in the ROM-specific sticky if your question is related to a certain ROM.

[Q] Need serious help with external micro sd card

Hi everyone,
I am having a severe problem with my external micro sd card and I am looking for a solution. I will try to give as much info as possible here.
Last night I connected my captivate to my pc using USB mass storage. I forgot to disconnect the phone from pc and also forgot to press STOP usb mass storage on my captivate and turned my pc off. By the time I realized, it was too late. So, i disconnected the usb cable from pc. After a few seconds, the captivate's notification showed "media scanner running" as always and started scanning my internal and external SD card.
Just when it said "scanning completed", the phone became unresponsive and went straight to the splash screen. It did not completely reboot the phone but just went straight to the splash screen and turned on again. After turning on, it again started to scan the sd card as usual and the same thing happened again. It started happening again and again in cycles. So i took the battery out and restarted 3 4 times but everytime the phone started and scanned the sd cards (which it normally does) it kept going back to splash screen.
I was running mosaic 3 diet 2.3.3 rom at that time and decided to quickly flash again. So i flashed back to AT&T stock using 1-click ODIN. and everything seemed to be ok. I then, again flashed custom 2.3.3 rom using the CORRECT procedure but it started happening again. So i went back to stock using odin and everything was OK. SD card worked fine. I tried to flash custom rom couple more times with and without the sd card inserted but the issue doesnt go away. I also tried flashing 2.2 rogers STOCK but the problem is still there.
I then took my micro sd card out and that seemed to solve the problem (for custom roms). The phone started working normally again using custom rom but as soon as I inserted the sd card, it wud go back to the splash screen and do a mini restart again.
The only rom that didnt give me any problems with sd card was AT&T's 1-click odin to stock 2.1. no errors or splash screen restarts with STOCK rom.
i also tried different micro sd card but no luck. I tried formatting both internal and external sd cards too. nothing helped.
I hope i provided enough info. Please help
Thanks
can someone please help?
Have you tried mounting it in a card reader and running an fs check on it?
Sent from Planet Oa.
You could do what was started with card reader, and if that doesn't help you could format the sd card after everything is copied from it. If you don't have reader you could probably do adb to dump with phone off. I think it is pull/external.sd (not shore someone should correct me on command soon). To format it is control panel, hardware, and device managment. Then find external sd and format it. You should format with FAT32.( To mount external sd for that I think you could also do from cwm recovery.)...(if need help with any of that just pm me)

It may be different on android, but on my last phone it was highly advised not to format when using the phone as a card reader. I bought a cheap USB model at Newegg for ~$5 that handles more card types than you can shake a baby at. Its proven to be well worth the cash.

Have you tried running the USB mass storage on your device again? I know Ubuntu 10.10 has a cool appliction for formatting and things like that. Ive used it before to fix something, boot it off of a disc too.
Heres some links
Ubuntu cd setup page- http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download
How to format something using Ubuntu- http://www.ehow.com/how_4929061_format-hard-drive-ubuntu.html
I would guess that the MicroSD is a FAT32...
I can and I have formatted the sd card several times. Both internal and external sd cards give me this problem.
I was able to mount usb storage once the phone started and while it was scanning my sd cards (which it usually does), i VERY QUICKLY went into settings, connected my usb to pc and mounted the sd card. The phone kept restarting(or going back to splash screen and starting again) while it was mounted. I also noticed that once it was mounted the sd card was completely accessible. i.e, i could delete/copy/transfer etc carry out all functions normally.
I formatted the sd cards using FAT32 (both internal and external too) but it didnt help.
However, after trying many times I was able to run my phone with the MOSAIC DIET III 2.3.3 rom and it has been working since then. But it doesnt work on any other rom right now, specially on Serendipity VII
The phone is working properly as it used to for now but I am afraid it will happen again when I flash another rom or go back to stock.
Any other suggestions?
Honestly, my suggestion if its under warranty us to flash back as close to stock as possible(wipe all caches, master clear, orbital nuke, etc) then take it to att, or purposefully brick it and tell them kies fubared it.

You did remember to remove your external sd card and sim when you did this, right?
I have been flashing since I've got the phone (november 2010) and I have done it numerous times. But I never took out my sim and/or external sd card while flashing any rom or while going back to stock. Never had a problem either. Maybe once or twice I did remove it but only when the intructions for a particular rom specifically asked to do so, otherwise no.
So, no I actually didnt remove the sim and sd card when I flashed back to stock.
Does it matter?
Yes, it can corrupt the sim/sdcard. it's more based on unluck of the draw. I did the flash to gb bootloaders with my sim/external in. I guess I got lucky
