I live in NZ and use my captivate on the telecom xt network (3g 850/2100) so there is no problem with the frequencies, except since i upgraded to a GB rom my phone has not been picking up the network and is instead trying to connect to another network (vodafone) gsm 900mhz band.
I tried reflashing to stock 2.1 rom but my phone still didn't connect, tried a bunch of different modems with no luck. I'm on cm7 atm.... which doesn't allow typing codes in the dialer to check which frequency the phone is connected to and all that.
Anyone know what could be wrong? Its not a reception problem, i have another phone i tried my sim in and get almost full signal. Its a problem since flashing to dlev 4.2, after being on serendipity 3.5 without fault since last year.
also: telecom has no gsm frequencies on the xt network, vodafone still has gsm... so i'm thinking it could be that my phone is just not connecting to wcdma for whatever reason.
Try new modem?

Have you tried the modem dance?

My phone is from UK orange. my phone has great signal at home and office.
However, after I upgraded to Froyo JPO version firmware, my phone has signal in my office with 3G but has no signal at home and some other places where the 3g signal is weak or not working. This is very annoying. Please anyone can help me?
My original firmware: JP5/JP3/JP1
My current firmware: XXJPO/XXJPP/XAJPO
MY Production code: I9000HKDORA
Tonight I try to flash lots of versions from samfirmware.com but there is no signal for all firmwares.
Please can anyone help me? It seems that my current wersion does not support 2G signal???
Thanks in advance
can you check your IMEI in the phone (settings>about phone>status) and compare it with the IMEI indicated in the box (or remove teh battery and there should be a sticker at the back of teh phone with your IMEI).
Note: Also check if your APN settings are correct and complete. It might have been deleted or changed after the flash.
I have checked the imei, it is the same. The apn is orangeinternet, I think it is correct.
When I go to somewhere, the phone can be used with symbol of 3g or E or H, but at home only signal bar shown and emergency call only.

It is GSM/WCDMA (auto mode) selected.
I remember I can only choose 3G and wireless network when I just flash the FROYO JPO firmware...
It is possible that orange are working on the network. I had similar issues a few weeks ago (I'm in the southeast) bit is now fine. You could go see your local orange guys and ask.

Thank you!
Bought a Galaxy S yesterday. It is originally purchased in the Netherlands, but i'm using it in Belgium now. When buying it, the device got tested with proximus and mobistar sim card (main providers in Belgium) and seemed to work (sms and calling worked). Getting home, putting in my mobile vikings sim card, I didn't seem to get any service. In my notifications bar it says BASE (which is the network mobile vikings uses if i'm not mistaking), but i'm not getting anything.
When searching the providers, mobile vikings is shown, but when selecting it I get :
Your sim does not allow connection to this network", which is strange since it's a mobile vikings sim card.
Never had any troubles, and sim card was working moments before testing on the galaxy S
No custom rom installed or what so ever.
Any help would be greatly appreciated since I can't do anything with the phone atm.
Thanks in advance!
I had this problem about 8 months ago... If i remember correctly I just had the wrong modem flashed... I was missing a modem with 850 band... try flashing Ugkc1 of jk4 modems... also check to see if your APN(access point names) are in your wireless settings

Just got a mail back from my provider, they're sending me a new simcard. But I doubt it's going to make a difference...
My apn settings are all ok. Don't know about my modem though...Don't know what it is, or whta it's supposed to be
I am pretty sure you probably need the 850 mhz modem in your area then..
what is your current baseband (settings>about phone)
New Sim card won't fix your problem.
My baseband is XXJG1, and I'm still on Android 2.1
My suggestion to you would be to download JS8 which is 2.2 and flash it with ODIN
http://www.samfirmware.com/WEBPROTECT-i9000.htm from here (you need to sign up)
see if that fixes your problem...
if it doesn't work, stay on JS8 and flash a modem(phone) file only that has 850 enabled... like JK4 or KC1 (there are more then those 2)
Just look up steps on how to flash with ODIN and check you tube for videos... just be careful...
Thanks a lot for the advice. I'll try it this weekend. (on a mac atm,and can't get heimdall to run)
UPDATE:
I tried flashing my modem without any result as far as I could see. Tried flashing darky, without result.
Got my new simcard from my provider, but nothing . I'm back on stock now FW 2.1 update 1 and baseband XXJM3.
Strange thing is that I get edge and 3G, to which I can connect. So my mobile internet from my provider is working, but no signal what so ever...
I'm starting to get desperate here...
I was also similar problem on my i9000t and i897 used in India. In my case the problem was intermittent. The solution i arrived at is as follows:
First select a modem that works correctly for your Band. Now force that particular band from SGS tools or going to service mode by dialing *#2263#. For example I force GSM900 for edge and wcdma2100 band for 3G. After that let your mobile choose select the network. Be patient for 10-15 minutes, it should work.
Hi!
I have been searching hi and low on how to recover my 850 band.
I bought in June of this year a SGS I9000T on my country, approved by the SUTEL which is a government bureaucratic branch that has the purpose of making sure the cellphones brought to the country can be used and blah blah. I currently live at Costa Rica. It was working perfectly fine up until the point in which I changed it CWM 7.0 and lost my 850 band. It was under 3G coverage.
During the installation my phone got bricked and I flashed several other firmwares where I had the i9000B and i9000M and i9000t, but in none of the aforementioned I got 3G coverage anymore (including i9000t).
I finally went to CWM and got tired of it. Eventually, I got back onto searching on this subject and found how to enter the service mode, got into *#*#4636#*#* to find I was on EDGE, then on *#2263# and activated my 850 band, with no result. It was active, but it wasn't ever actually used.
I changed my SIM Card three times making sure it had 3G coverage, I also changed carriers to find the same.
A friend of mine bought a i9000T and had perfect HSDPA coverage, paying the same as me, with the same data plan, under the same company.
I thought it was the ROM so I moved back to stock FW and had the same results. On each one of them I activated the 850 band and got the same result -- no 3G coverage.
Then I tried Amestris 3.3 and the same.
Then I went to Darky ROM 10.2.2 with the same result. I learned about flashing different modems, and have done so for the following:
TUBJV6
JVO
JPO
JPD
I am currently using TUBJV6, which is the same of my friend's.
My screen shows up the following under *#0011# command:
GSM: HOME(CS+PS)
Band: GSM1800, BSIC: 55
Reg PLMN MCC (712)-MNC(1), IsPCS
TchFrq: ,BcchFrq: 556
RSSI: -73, RxLev: 37
NOM: 2, TxLev: 255
TS: 0, VocType: 255
Cell_id: 10813, LAC: 5112
On *#2263# I have tried to leave it only to WCDMA 850 band but got no service message or emergency calls only.
All the Combi bands are active, including 850, of course.
I don't have a backup for the first ROM I used to have, but it was JPD and I tried it with no result.
Any suggestion? I am literally going mad over this problem.
Thanks in advance.
this probably doesn't help much, but I flashed darky's 10.2.2 today on a i9000t (venezuela, 850mz) coming from stock froyo 2.2.1 and I can still get 3G and H (which should be enhanced 3G, or 3.5G)
Also, I did not flash any modem other than the one that comes with darky's.
Baseband: JVQ
Also, make sure under your network settings you have your APN set correctly for your carrier! Although, if you can get EDGE, most likely you have them set correctly and your problem is not related to APN. But it's worth a shot. I know that by flashing other roms, the APN info is lost, most of the time.
Good luck.
bro,i facing the same problem with you!!!!
no 3G/HSDPA connection at all!!!! only connect with GPRS and EDGE
i just subscribe my data plan before flashing darky rom !!!!
I bought this tablet a year ago unlocked i was on three network i switch to vodafone and updated to 2.3 everything worked but decided to switch back to three this is where problems started

I encountered exactly this issue today.
I wanted to test the data speed from another carrier (same band: 850 Mhz).
It did not detect the data network so I thought "never mind", and inserted my SIM I always used (over 10 months).
It now says "emergency calls only", and when I click to check Mobile Networks in settings, it says no SIM detected. When I insert my SIM into another phone it works.
I tried a few other radios, but it doesn't work.
So what to do with an issue like this?
I have no idea i have tried every possible combination of everything from flashing modding but if a manually choose network it says sim not allowed to register on this network if that helps ive rung both three and samsung with no help x

I need for the 850 Mhz band, and so far only 2 are confirmed to work on this band.
I have tried both, and several others now as well. Now I would settle for SIM card detection and GSM signal...
For example I have tried
Telestra-modem.zip
JK3
JPZ
HKC1
JK5
JPE
None work even for detecting the SIM card.

Hmmm, I used to be on JMA, changed to JPZ and now I'm on JQ2 all working as it should here in Belgium with Telenet...

Yep, same here... the zip says JQ2 but the inside is JQ3, which I assume is the latest release Anyway, for me it works a charm.
I just sent my 10 month old Tab for repairs.
The Samsung service center people and carrier staff were all very surprised it didn't work.
Let me explain why. When I insert a SIM card from carrier #1 on 850 Mhz band it works. I then insert a SIM card from Carrier #2 on the same 850 Mhz band, and it does not work.
I insert SIM #2 into another android phones (tested Galaxy S2, S1, galaxy nexus, and a "dumb-phone")... the SIM works.
Then we tested SIM #3 from the same carrier of SIM #2.... SIM #3 works. Very confusing.
Conclusion.... the SIM card slot is "broken". Nobody knows why some SIM's work, and others do not.
Result. 3-5 days wait for a repaired device or a new device.
Edit: And big thanks to every android custom rom developer out there. Your hard work and diligence allowed me to revert back to a Stock 2.2 ROM, including locked bootloaders, before sending back for repairs.
This is bad news...
I got a call from Samsung and they explained to me that they had to change the entire mainboard. Naturally they didn't have any in stock, and had to order it from Korea, and I'm out of a Tab for 3 weeks.
Hello,
I have a galaxy tab non branded with overcome installed.. I`m trying to get Tmobile 3g on the tab but no matter what modem i installed i`m always getting edge.. I tried with roto modem switch.. but still no 3g.. Tried to flash with tmobile stock modem but no 3g..

Please suggest me if i have to make any other changes to get 3g on tmobile network..
Thanks
bell mobility tab no 3g on tmobile
No one is having this issue ?
No 3g, just Edge signal
I too have a similar problem with no 3g signal. I'm in Bolivia and I have 3g coverage with my provider. I had upgraded to Gingerbread in hopes this would solve the problem. No 3g. I then installed the different modems and I still had the same (no 3g) problem. After this didn't work I went back to Froyo as a last ditch attempt since I had rooted Froyo in the beginning and thought maybe something got messed up. I've never seen a 3g signal here and don't know about the U.S since I've only use it here. Is it possible that the Galaxy Tab 7 3g just does not work in Bolivia? By the way, I've checked all settings and done everything to make sure things are correct. Any ideas? Thanks.
for @polapine, this is answered in another thread.
Basically the conclusion is that T-mobile uses different frequency for 3G/HSDPA, that a normal unbranded tab modem hardware is simply incapable of using. (1700 Mhz)
On the other hand, a T-Mobile branded tab can also operate at the "usual" 3G band in other networks in Europe/Asia/Australia (2100 MHz)
