HELP - broken pc - Off-topic

Hi,
My 5 year old dell dimension e520 is having some graphics issues. The machine turns on and comes up with the BIOS screen

}
However the screen is full of lines which are not supposed to be there. It then carries onto the next screen which appears as normal
And then boots windows as normal (no graphics issues here just a bad camera!)
However instead of coming up with the login screen it comes up with this screen
And then restarts. However it is fine in safe mode.
On booting into diagnostics it shows the same issue as in the BIOS.
And when I run the graphics test it shows this error
I have a feeling that the graphics card is a geforce 7300le, and the FBI DVI even (HTC spellcheck!!!) out is not working, only vga.
Any ideas?

No, I would like to get it working!! (I still have the old one - something like http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/pcs/5188/viglen-homepro-400cs-pii-400 )

Maybe try throwing in another graphics card and see if it works. Try the VGA output.

Tge vga on the current card sort of works - dvi does nothing. Will any old graphics card do or does it have to have a specific no of pins or be a specific size (i dont have any spare)

Look like a corrupted driver issue. Uninstall drivers for video card, reboot and install an older version of drivers then reboot again. Let me know if this helps.

Burnt GPU. Basically, your GPU is sooo overworked that it's like a horse with three legs. Some people might treat it like a fetish, but most mainstreamers will tell you to let it out onto the pastures and get a new GPU.

It looks like there's a tuna sandwich wedged in between the CPU and heat sink. Try shifting the mass of the sandwich to the right by 6 degrees.

My vote is for a video card that's about to go. You probably had some circuitry burn out, maybe during a power surge or something? You could check and see if you have anything burnt out on the back of it.

No power surge (i don't think) although the card could have been overworked. I doubt its a driver issue since the drivers haven't been updated and the same issue is in the BIOS.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App

the strange thing is that it is fine in safe mode (which I am using now)

Video card might not be using the burnt out RAM while in safe mode because of the lower power settings.
If you are still convinced it's not your GPU's RAM, re-install windows.

If thats the case you can try updating the driver and see what happens... the issue is that safe mode will be using just the 2d VGA part of the vid card which doesn't mean anything unfort.

you should get a mac.

Hey any music producing people in here?
just have some questions let he know if its ok to ask. Thanks!

There's quite a few. Ask away.
Ok first question its this package good?
http://m.guitarcenter.com/Item/Default.aspx?itemno=1394721&urx=1
I play instruments but never produced music. So if you were starting would this be good to start with? Thanks I need some guidance
The reviews seem okay, but not overwhelming. If you already play then I'd suggest just getting hold of some software and a decent sound card to do some home recording. That way you can at least see if you want to take it further before shelling out on something expensive.
I reckon you can spec a decent setup for cheaper than that. Even after buying that package you need multitrack software which isn't cheap.
Personally I'd recommend protools but that's just me. If you haven't used one before then none of them are that user friendly to begin with.
Sonar or Cubase may be easier to start off with.
Think about what you really need to start with and not what the package suggests you need.

Guys my gf bought me this package as a surprise. Since I preety much have it well, on its way. What else do I need? I will be using a pc I have 4GB of ram 1tb of hard drive. A 3.2 ghz processor pretty much a built PC. Like I said now that I will have this what else do I need any suggestions. Thanks guys I knew I can count on all of Android community.

Yes sorry.

Pc specs are fine.
If you have that package en route then all you really need is some kind of multitrack software as I mentioned.
I'd be very surprised if your audio interface doesn't come with either a demo of something or a very basic stripped down recording suite.
If you plan on recording more than one thing at once then you may want to throw a mixer into the equation...

^^^ This.
As Conan said earlier, Cubase is a good one. Acid is also good. It's loop-based but you don't have to use it that way and it's simple to pick up - probably more-so than most.
Incidentally, your PC specs make mine look ancient, and I've had around 30 sample channels running on Acid without any stutter, so you've got nothing to worry about there.
I used to run pro tools and reason on an eight year old Toshiba Lappy with a ****ty celeron CPU and 700 Megs of ram....
It wasn't pretty but it worked.
Just goes to show you.....

Thread hijacking here, but at least on topic somewhat.
Did you try Caustic, from the Market? I remember telling you about it but don't remember if you did or not.
I did try it briefly. It was pretty good. Its on my list of apps to get once I have a Tablet.

i'm-you can call me-a room music producer
i record my own music just using common things:
- a Laptop
- Reason software : for drum & bass
- Guitar + Amp
- Guitar effect (zoom)
- GuitarPro (for uhhh.. patterning my music )
- headphone + common mic
so far so good
Like I said before, I find Sony Acid very good for recording and mixing, and it's probably the easiest studio style app I've ever used. For drums I'll always suggest Fruity Loops, and it's very versatile too, being able to add VST plugins so being anything you need it to be, not just a drum machine.
Thanks guys anything else you suggest I should know. Any Miami people??

If you're more of a "real" musician and not so much a keyboard bashing sequencer freak then I'd recommend getting yourself an actual hardware groovebox/drum machine.

Minidump file - anyone lend a hand reading it?

I just had a BSOD – freaked me out because I'm working on assignments at the moment and a dead PC would be disastrous.
I tried installing the debugging tool to read it but it tells me it couldn't locate the file path during installation – its sounding like its just not liking its own install exe...
I'm using Windows Vista, and I did go for the right version as far as I'm aware, so I'm not sure what's going on. I tried downloading it again etc, no luck. I'll probably spend as much time trying to sort out the debugging tool's issues as working out a solution for whatever caused the crash... so...
If someone who has the debugger installed is feeling like generating some positive karma for themselves by doing a quick read-over as to suspected problem I'd be immensely grateful (this doesn't do justice to how grateful I'd be...)
minidump is below:

Thanks again!

Use Windows 7 or XP.
Usually a normal restart works. Although, it might be a good idea to find out the reason for the BSOD.

Yeah, well aware of Vista's issues. Its been pretty much fine, until this BSOD.
Parents' PC is XP but not at home for a few weeks, and have assignments to do in that time, hence wanting to know if there's something I should be doing to stop a more catastrophic event...
Just one BSOD?
Wouldn't crap your pants over that to be honest..............
Have you installed something recently out of the ordinary?

Nope.
The reason I'm more concerned about this BSOD is that my graphic card has had a tendency to overheat if I play games and shuts itself off to prevent damamge, and even with simple things like word processing / net surfing it sits in the 70sC if I don't force the fan up to 60%.
Case cover is off to help - it started happening after coming back from holidays. Cleaned it out best I could but didn't help the overheat issue, so some mysterious thing happened to it while I was gone.
If it is the graphic card that's caused that BSOD then I need to seriously bring forward my plans to upgrade my PSU to get a newer card before it causes any significant dmage to other parts.
I was putting it off until holidays (in 3 weeks now, but been happening since Feb).
It's things like this that make me glad that I've stayed on xp for all these years. Have you tried a restore point? I think it could be your graphics card doing it when it shuts itself down.

Upgrading desktop tower

First off let me say im a total noob when it comes to computers.
All I know is my computer is running windows 7
4 gb ram
Motherboard : gateway Q35T BTX W/ vpro.
So I think my motherboard capacitor went bad again because it turns on than off repeatedly without showing anythig on the screen. And I checked the motherboard and one capacitor is bulging on the top.
WHAT CAUSES THIS? THIS IS THE SECOND TIME.
I want to avoid this so I want to change the the motherboard to a different one. What do I need to know?
I also want to keep my same harddrive.
Thank you in advance

You're a noob with computers, and you are pointing to a bad capacitor? Most noobs don't even know what a capacitor is.

That could potentially be a burned out capacitor. However replacing a cap isn't something I think you should do if you are a "total noob when it comes to computers". It requires the proper equipment which I seriously doubt you even have.
So I recommend changing your mobo if you're certain the failure is there rather than trying to replace it yourself. Since I doubt you're going to want to get a new processor too you should probably just get the same model. If you really want to upgrade you should figure out the form factor of your mobo and find one with USB 3.0 support in the same form factor.
To make it easier for you it's a BTX form factor.

i bought a motherboard.
the same one as the stock.
i wanna prevent this from happening again.
i also bought HIS ATI Radeon HD 4650 512 MB DDR2 SDRAM PCI Express 2.0 x16
i was also thinking would a BAD POWER SUPPLY cause a bulging capacitor?
if so what kind of power supply do i buy? i was looking online and there are 24 pin and 20 pin. i have no clue what that means
all i know is my stock power supply watt is 305.

Graphics card problem

I bought a Radeon 6870 from gigabyte about a year ago and thought it was a decent card. well its starting to get some black dots on the screen, Sometimes the whole page is black like internet explorer is black and everything else is fine, and whenever I refresh the screen the dots go away. If any body could help me that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

the original card in the computer was a GeForce gt 120 1GB and that works completely no problems what so ever. The computer doesn't have on board video its only dedicated so that's ruled out. It has to be the graphics card like somethings wrong with maybe the ram on it or something.

It could be that your monitor is going bad. Frozen pixels could be a problem. If not, i would recommend trying older drivers. If you get the same issue then your video card could be going. I had a problem with AMD cards only to last for a year then they poop. Nvidia is the one ive had alot of success with.

Did you buy it from Google, or from someone on ebay or such?

(im not sure how easy this part would be without a working usb port, you would normally simply "adb pull /system" if it worked)
I doubt that there is an ota for it to begin with, they likely never made a patch for it since it isnt public.
(unless the glass team's policy differs from the standard android one) they generally do not make otas for combinations that they would not expect in the wild
Normally if this were a nexus device, the course of action would be to just use the factory image, but like you mentioned the usb port isnt able to be detected by a pc.
If you can root it without using the usb port, it might be possible to manually get CWM loaded on it and update with a manually made update zip. But without a usb port, if anything goes wrong then it would be very difficult to recover from that.

When you say 'I got my kit from google." Do you mean the explorer's program, or did you buy it for the full price? You can't update/flash from XE13, since the USB port is broken. Neither can you set up ADB over TCPIP. OTA's are unavailable too, since XE13 is not allowed to receive OTA's.
