Upgrading desktop tower - Off-topic

First off let me say im a total noob when it comes to computers.
All I know is my computer is running windows 7
4 gb ram
Motherboard : gateway Q35T BTX W/ vpro.
So I think my motherboard capacitor went bad again because it turns on than off repeatedly without showing anythig on the screen. And I checked the motherboard and one capacitor is bulging on the top.
WHAT CAUSES THIS? THIS IS THE SECOND TIME.
I want to avoid this so I want to change the the motherboard to a different one. What do I need to know?
I also want to keep my same harddrive.
Thank you in advance

You're a noob with computers, and you are pointing to a bad capacitor? Most noobs don't even know what a capacitor is.
Also, there's already a computer thread here in off-topic for your issue. Post it there.

Well I know this cause it happened before and I got it fixed by someone.
What causes a bad capacitor.

That could potentially be a burned out capacitor. However replacing a cap isn't something I think you should do if you are a "total noob when it comes to computers". It requires the proper equipment which I seriously doubt you even have.
So I recommend changing your mobo if you're certain the failure is there rather than trying to replace it yourself. Since I doubt you're going to want to get a new processor too you should probably just get the same model. If you really want to upgrade you should figure out the form factor of your mobo and find one with USB 3.0 support in the same form factor.
To make it easier for you it's a BTX form factor.

i bought a motherboard.
the same one as the stock.
i wanna prevent this from happening again.
i also bought HIS ATI Radeon HD 4650 512 MB DDR2 SDRAM PCI Express 2.0 x16
i was also thinking would a BAD POWER SUPPLY cause a bulging capacitor?
if so what kind of power supply do i buy? i was looking online and there are 24 pin and 20 pin. i have no clue what that means
all i know is my stock power supply watt is 305.

Looking for a new laptop...Suggestions?

Well, the MacBook Pro is on eBay, and I'm in need of a replacement. Not that there is anything wrong with it, I'm just done with Apple.
Anywho, I'm in the market for a reliable, fast, and new computer (PC, no mac )
The minimum specs I'm looking for:
* Intel i5 or i7
* At LEAST 4 gigs of RAM
* Less than 2 inches thick
* At least a 15" screen
I'm also open to suggestions, so let me know.
Do you guys have any personal preferences/experiences? Best place to buy?
Sony Vaio (of some kind) or..
Alienware Laptop?
Or Dell?
Iam a dell fan even though i haven't bought any of their equipment.
Try this: http://laptoplogic.com/laptop-finder/advanced
Any price range?
by the MacBook pro I'm guessing 800 1000 is close?
I bought a Msi a6200 at electronic express for $549 on no tax weekend here. Core i5 430m, 4gb ddr3, 500 gb hdd, Bluetooth, wireless n card, and HDMI out. I'm loving it. Asus laptops are also nice.

Thanks for the link flyboy.
My family has had some bad experiences with dell in the past. I used to love their commercials though lol. "DUDE, you're gettin' a DELL!"
Alienware is definitely one of my prospects...Haven't really seen any that I would consider "thin"...But I'm used to the mac of course lol.
@Max I was just thinking that I should have posted a price range. Anything from $800- ~$1100 (US)

Not necessarily "thin", just something thinner than two inches that I can lug around school without breaking my back, or backpack.

HELP - broken pc

Hi,
My 5 year old dell dimension e520 is having some graphics issues. The machine turns on and comes up with the BIOS screen

However the screen is full of lines which are not supposed to be there. It then carries onto the next screen which appears as normal
And then boots windows as normal (no graphics issues here just a bad camera!)
However instead of coming up with the login screen it comes up with this screen
And then restarts. However it is fine in safe mode.
On booting into diagnostics it shows the same issue as in the BIOS.
And when I run the graphics test it shows this error
I have a feeling that the graphics card is a geforce 7300le, and the FBI DVI even (HTC spellcheck!!!) out is not working, only vga.
Any ideas?

No, I would like to get it working!! (I still have the old one - something like http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/pcs/5188/viglen-homepro-400cs-pii-400 )
Maybe try throwing in another graphics card and see if it works. Try the VGA output.
Tge vga on the current card sort of works - dvi does nothing. Will any old graphics card do or does it have to have a specific no of pins or be a specific size (i dont have any spare)

Look like a corrupted driver issue. Uninstall drivers for video card, reboot and install an older version of drivers then reboot again. Let me know if this helps.
Burnt GPU. Basically, your GPU is sooo overworked that it's like a horse with three legs. Some people might treat it like a fetish, but most mainstreamers will tell you to let it out onto the pastures and get a new GPU.
It looks like there's a tuna sandwich wedged in between the CPU and heat sink. Try shifting the mass of the sandwich to the right by 6 degrees.
My vote is for a video card that's about to go. You probably had some circuitry burn out, maybe during a power surge or something? You could check and see if you have anything burnt out on the back of it.
No power surge (i don't think) although the card could have been overworked. I doubt its a driver issue since the drivers haven't been updated and the same issue is in the BIOS.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App
the strange thing is that it is fine in safe mode (which I am using now)
Video card might not be using the burnt out RAM while in safe mode because of the lower power settings.
If you are still convinced it's not your GPU's RAM, re-install windows.

If thats the case you can try updating the driver and see what happens... the issue is that safe mode will be using just the 2d VGA part of the vid card which doesn't mean anything unfort.

[HACK] Hardware HDMI/MicroSD Hack? Unused Pins/Connectors

HI! i've found some pics of the nexus 7 motherboard and some connectors seems to be unused... If you look at the "con1" (the one used for micro usb connection) it has 22 pins 0_o. Maybe we can find a hardware hack =D
More images here
We could do a "simple" (dangerous) test: HDMI has a hot plug detection pin, the only way to check is provide one pin with +5v dc and check if any other pin sends a ddc query.... but how can we find the hotplug pin (if there's any)?

From the teardown it was pretty clear there was space for the rear camera as well as HDMI.
The IO presenters were using units with HDMI, so it was probably the same motherboard, populated.
You would have to be a hard-core hacker to want toi add your own HDMI. No idea what is missing beside header and connector. Probably not as bad as adding MHL
I am happy living without HDMI.
Maybe I will never use the hdmi connector but hacking electronical things when i have to hack biological ones every day is a nice way to spend the time xD

Can't back it up right now but will frantically google to find it.. But I remember reading that it had the hardware for mhl but currently not enable in software?
but just tested my jellybeaned gnex and that works fine with mhl so not sure how much truth there is to that.
I can vouch for the photo of a Nexus 7 with an HDMI port, as well as a comment from a presenter that the special units they were using for presentations had HDMI.
No, I can not provide any links. That was thousands of pages ago...
I do not believe the Nexus 7 has the MHL chip, or any provision for it. Asus is not listed as a MHL provider.
Samsung (Nexus) is a MHL provider, so the hardware there would not be a surprise.
In that teardown review (where the OP got that image, I believe), they mistakenly said it supported HDMI out and included a picture of the HDMI cable from the nexus Q. They later retracted that comment.
That might be the source of the confusion.
There was at least one actual picture of a Nexus 7 with an HDMI port on the bottom.
I think a reviewer got their hands on a presenter's unit.
The image you're looking for is in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1736916
The internel dev versions (the ones used for presentations) had mini hdmi.
So, it does make sense that theres space on the board.
Thank you for that picture link! I searched everywhere for that...
At least that is one less reason to think I have lost my mind...
I'd love to be able to solder on an sdcard slot, if that's all that's needed. It's generally pretty easy to solder to headers if you're careful about it.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
From the teardown, I don't recall seeing any space for an SD card.
Rear camera - yes, HDMI - yes, but not SD Card.
I could be mistaken...
Also, the external storage problem has been pretty much solved with a USB OTG cable and stickmount.
we could solder a slod for an additional sd card... there's enaught space to fit in a sd card without "external" access.

we're counting pins and waiting for more info =P
look here: http://guide-images.ifixit.net/igi/KjNsrjlvHZdFWEGF.huge
we have 14 free pins and an hdmi data connection requires only 12 wires + 5v + grnd.
i'm looking for someone who can do some simple tests on the unused pins.
when i will have the nexus 7 i'll do it by myself at uni but maybe someone who have the I/O version now could do something meantime.
Looks pretty interesting to me hope we cram a sd card In there somewhere.

Large capacity MP3 player >150GB

My 160GB Ipod Classic has finally died T_T The battery's not holding a charge at all, I'm thinking of getting it repaired but I'm worried something else'll fail shortly as it's had heavy use. I've been researching alternatives but all the threads etc I could find are a few years old, so what's the situation these days, are there any decent/inexpensive MP3 players with at least 150GB of storage out there? Any sort of mini hard drives with screens or anything? Or is the ipod classic still my best bet? Cheers

If you don't care about bulk archos has some massive pmps. I have a 4.8 in 250 gb but I can't use it for anything other than in my car just because its so large.
Cheers, good shout - what do you think of the Archos 48?
It's alright. Nothing special (and the resistive screen sucks after being spoiled by capacitive screens), charging (through a proprietary cable) is slow and the GUI sucks, but you can't beat the price for the capacity (I got my 250gb for like 170 a year ago).
I should add that the battery is fairly long lasting from a full charge and that in order to play movies and certain file formats (you'll be fine with mp3s) you have to buy format packs (which I find to be an obnoxious and money hungry practice that Archos should be ashamed of).

Yeah 500GB for £100, seriously tempted - £26 (independent site) to repair my 160GB iPod but like I said, something else could just fail as it has received heavy use. Had a look and it doesn't look like there are any ROMs for the 48, would be nice to pump it at least up to froyo... from the dimensions the 48 doesn't look too bulky, still pocketable?
Pocketable-maybe, but the weight is a pretty big factor. Not to mention that it's almost an inch thick (doesn't sound that bad until you have it right in front of you. I can post pictures for comparison to my Xoom or Nexus S if you're familiar with either.

From the pics it seems clear to me that it boiled from the inside. My guess is that while the device will have overcharging protection, the battery was probably faulty and didn't signal it was fully charged.
It was reported in China, where we know quality standards aren't as high as 'the west' so a faulty battery may more easily slip through, perhaps even deliberately to clear the factory floor.

Off topic....with regards to the myth of quality products and China, you get what YOU specify and pay for, you want it cheap and below standards to sell in "the west", they'll make it for you, you want an iPad, iPod, iPhone, Panasonic G2 etc etc etc, they'll make that for you also.
For the record can you tell me something of quality in electronics that the west actually makes?
That wasn't a challenge, just a look a the whole situation comment.
Motorola Atrix (MROM)
Nexus 7 (Stock+ Root)

Nothing like recirculating old news to make it seem like new news.

I was thinking the same thing.. I have looked all over for even ONE more incident Nothing no place.. Maybe just maybe this could be fake . HEHE .. I once had a laptop do something similar. Very long ago before they had thermail protection in the cpus.. I think it was like a intel 300 mhz or something super fast back then...
reminds me of this: http://www.t3.com/news/exploding-samsung-galaxy-s3-found-to-be-a-microwaved-fake
I think the fire is caused by a third party charger. It might have a high amp output.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
I think all batteries are made by only a couple of manufactures in the world. Battery tech hasn't changed in how long?! I doubt this was a blowout. My N7 hardly gets real warm when taxing the GPU and Charging (it does get warm though, but not burn hot).
I agree with the charger thing... or a microwave thing... or someone looking for attention.

In my home town there is a small company that makes high end audio equipment for radio and TV stations. Everything is hand made, the circuit boards, everything. It's a family owned business, they have some big customers that include the BBC. I had a summer job there once when I was 14 or 15. (all true when I was there, it's over 13 years ago now, but I have no reason to think much has changed in that regard).

It's pretty specialist and obviously not mass produced, but the equipment is near indestructible, they were quite proud to show me the results of extreme test lab.
I did some pretty mundane jobs, bring this, fetch that, measure some cables etc., but the best thing about it was I could use the company swimming pool!
