Nandroid Backup cycle? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
today I bought a captivate with eclair 2.1
baseband: I897UCJH7
Kernel: 2.6.29
i was going to flash cyanogen rom but I am trying to do a nandroid backup but it will not allow me to go into nandroi? I select backup rom and it goes to the recovery screen, i select reinstall and basically it resets the phone. Been trying the same thing for the past few times, thanks

clock work mod

I am running serendipity 6.3 I updated my rom manager premium. I hit flash cloworkmod recovery then I hit reboot in to recover. This brings me to the 3e recover screen. Then I can't reinstall packages because my power button is not working and it says verification error so I have to pull my battery then I use the 3 button fix to get me to recover mode again but this time I am in 2e recovery and everything goes good.
don't use rom manager on a rom with a custom kernel/recovery

So you shouldnt use ROM Manager to install Cognition 4.3 since it uses Cog Kernel? You should just manually boot into recovery and do it that way?

You shouldn't use rom manager for anything anymore other than to get the update.zip on your phone. Once you have the new recovery then just keep that on your phone and you just boot into recovery without rom manager.

+1 and if you keep the update.zip decide to flash to stock for any reason you won't have to root to flash a rom anymore
Understood. Thanks for the info. Im learning all the time!
i started a clockworkMOD recovery wiki on XDA. needs more info though. if anyone can improve go for it.

Just a Quick Question!

If I flash CM9 (link) with CWM can I switch back to CM7 by flashing with CWM, for example can i switch back to the MiniMod X ROM(link)?
Yes you can but before and after installation wipe data and cache it's better for your phone and finally dont forget to make a nandroid backup
Sent from my GT-S5570 using xda premium
Yes. CWM stays intact. If that is what you are afraid of.
You can switch between roms any number of times

i use cwm recovery 4 and i haven't encountered such issue. your recovery must've been corrupted in a way. by the way, if you already had a custom recovery before, why did you switch to cwm recovery 4?
one thing i can suggest is you try downloading a new copy of cwm recovery then reflash it

Stuck in a bootloop Team Nyx RC5

My brothers phone got into a bootloop for no reason, I can't acess the phone at all. Tried to wipe cache and dalvik via recovery but still no luck. I charged the phone so it wouldn't die, did a backup via recovery (I hope that is enough because I can't acess the phone to make a backup via titanium) what should I do now? I tried to re-install RC5 again without factory reset but I can't get past the ICS startup bootscreen. Suggestions?
Thanks.
EDIT: Can I be sure that I have backed up all his data and files if I did a backup via recovery? I don't want to do a data wipe and see all his stuff gone.
Also how will I recovery it later? Is it just like titanium backup?
Note: I did backup with cwm!
Bump I need help guys. Can I wipe data and later recovery it?
you can try to flash a kernel in CMW, to get it booting , your data should remain intact
sorry you should use .tar and use odin
You wont be able to backup with cwm I don't think unless you choose advanced restore and just restore apps otherwise it might restore the thing that gave you a bootloop

NANDROID ? Don't use stock recovery. Don't make nandroid backup for stock rom.
so how should i flash cwm recovery .
and which recovery is best suited for nandroid backups and comptability with all apps.
does it necessarily require me to install custom roms.

Same situation, need CWM ?

I am in same situation with a GT-S5570, it has stock rom and is rooted. I downloaded Clockwork Manager to it's SD card.
Then from stock Recovery manager I tried to install CWM from sd card. The screen got distorted and graphic looked awful.
Had to reboot and nothing got installed.
Tried Odin but it won't recognize my phone while in Downloading mode.
I want to install Cyanogenmod 10.1 Android 4.2........any ideas? I guess I need somekind of backup first, if I mess up and need to reinstall stock? Hard to do with stock recovery mode though.

To make it detect in odin you need drivers... install those by installing kies.... flash CWM from stock recovery only and not by using rom manager....

Apps can always be reinstalled in no time I think, problem is I can't install CWM from stock recovery, when selecting update from sd/zip or whatever it says, I pick the CWM file on my SD-card.
Then the graphic gets messed up and I can no longer see the menu clear.

Here you go..... download this recovery and flash it via stock recovery..... its a touch version of CWM all credits to squadzone and of course the kind uploader.....

before you flash cwm make sure its in the root directory of your sdcard... . So to say sd root is to say the topmost folder on the sdcard, which is just on the sd and not in a folder.
without getting odin recognize your Mobile you should not flash anything as if you get in any trouble it would be easy for you to flash the stock rom
and best and safest method to flash cwmr is to flash it through odin
you cannot backup stock rom with cwm recovery only custom one's can be backed up
to backup apps and data you should use titanium backup
