Replacing GMail App for Themed App - Thunderbolt Themes and Apps

Im wondering if anyone has a suggestion. I have a themed GMail app and I when I install it, it works, but when I reboot, its being replaced by the themed GMail app from Synergy Rom Nightly 8-12-11. Should I go into the synergy apps and delete the one there. If so can someone tell me how to get there as well? Thanks in advance.

Make sure you fully uninstall any older gmail.apk's with a good uninstaller program, just deleting them doesn't do it sometimes. Make sure you look in data/app and system/app because some apk's install in either, hope this helps.

Check location of installed Gmail apps.
/system/app
/data/app
Standard one should be installed in /system/app

To all:
For those installing themed Gmail (or any other themed app) The Gamil app is acting exactly as it should. Upon installing another themed Gmail, it will be usable and appear that all is well. Upon reboot it goes back to Dark Horse's or Stock Gmail app?
Well it's not the ROM's or the themes fault at all. If you get a themed app(or in this case) Silver's gmail inverted, you will notice that his name of his apk is "Test_blue_inverted_GM something something. Well when you install this is install as such and the adndroid system will link to that one without a reboot. Thi sis correct and completely normal. Where the problem you perceive as the ROM's or theme's problem is simple. Both the ROM and Theme use the correct naming stucture called Gmail.apk, Silvers does not. So upon reboot the icon links to Gmail as it should, which in effect to you it apears that the old one re-installed itself. It in fact did not.
Solution:
1. Rename Silver's Themed apk to Gmail.apk and it will overwrite the current one.
2. Uninstall gmail first then install Silver's.
Easy cheesy folks.

CM-RC1 - Transparant GenieWidget

Hi folks,
Got sick and tired of trying -and failing- to install a transparent GenieWidget, so i decided to mod it myself to have a transparant background.
I thought a lot of people are on a quest (like i was) to find the right one, that works on CM.
Im running the latest floyo on Hero.
Both HD & MD are modded.
Anyways, here it is
p.s. i used someone else's screenshot as i don't have time to do so...
This is excellent! I have been looking for an MDPI white trans genie widget forever. Well, almost forever . Thanks much for sharing.

That's what i thought
I'll be uploading a modded version also very soon (other icons)
I am trying to install this on Nonsensikal 13.2...it already has GenieWidget installed....when I go to overwrite it, it doesn't install. Any ideas on what to do?

When trying to replace a system app you must uninstall the old one first, reboot, then install.
That's the problem ...I can't uninstall the original geniewidget. I tried under applications but the uninstall is greyed out.

Try removing it with root explorer or titanium backup.

(App) Transparent Market 2.3.4

Transparent Market 2.3.4
Adb push to /system/app/Vending.apk
Make sure you delete the com.android.vending-1.apk in /data/app/com.android.vending-1.apk
You can also flash this if you put it in a flashable zip compatable with your clockwork; just take a zip folder you previously downloaded and delete the app or apps that are in the app folder of the zip and copy the Vending. apk to it and flash.
Here's a link to a buddy o' mine's thread, that has Black transparent facebook, gingerbread keyboards, and such.
The name's Fernando, all his stuff is compatable with the epic you just can't use his flash script, but you can have your own made, or do like I say in post #13
[UPDATE 3/5/11) 2.3.4.1transparent Gmail markets_transparent facebook_ more
Transparent gmail 2.3.4.1

Install like the market in the first post
Your my hero, lol, thanks for bringing this to the epic forum. .. also you gmail link is the vending.apk, as soon as that's fixed ill be set.

Works for the ACS Full or Standard Rom. Download and copy the file to the zip folder under /system/app. Copy to SDcard and install, will replace the apk already in the rom.
Awesome!! The market looks so cool. Please fix the link for gmail apk. I can't wait to see that one too. Thank you so much for these

Less Transparent, Inverted Gmail.apk
Hey Deciple -- I've been using a slightly less transparent version of the new Gmail and wanted to share. It makes visibility a little bit easier in the mail screen:
Installation is the same as above: goes in system/app/Gmail.apk
I'm pretty sure the opaqueness (or opacity) in this apk is controlled by a transparentish png.
But here's some screencaps of the Gmail apk you posted versus this more opaque version (on my setup).
Credit goes to the folks at Inversion Conversion on Droidforums, not me.
I think we should have a Transparent/Inverted apps section too, cuz they look soo much better than the stock.
Is there any way to do this with root explorer? Or any chance someone could put these in a zip or a little more instruction of what the op was talking about...adding to a previously flashed zip? Sorry to be such a noob, but I deleted both and can't figure out how to get them back

Ya - you can do it with Root Explorer.
With the Gmail.apk: download it, save to sdcard.
Open Root Explorer, navigate to sdcard
Long-click Gmail.apk, Copy.
back out to root folder, go to system, then app
(this is what I do.. just to create a backup)
Find existing Gmail.apk, rename to Gmail.bak
Paste the new Gmail.apk in that folder.
Find it, Long click, select Permissions
Under "Read" Check all 3, under "Write", Check ONLY user, under "Execute" uncheck all of them.
4 boxes checked, total. So it reads: rw-r--r--
Then exit, reboot if you want, and you should be set.

Once all is running fine, you can move that Gmail.bak over somewhere to your sdcard to reduce space taken up in your /system/app folder.

Ok.........What you do is , If you ever downloaded a flashable zip, that has a market in it or any other app for that matter, that you know is compatable with your version of clockwork, then you open it up with 7zip, then you should see a folder called meta-inf and system. Open the system folder and there should be another folder in there called app. Open that one and delete whatever's in there (after you've presumably copied and saved the entire zip If you want to keep what's inside)and replace it with the app or app's you want to flash.

2. -1 this is cool its to show you that there is more in the description, fade effect.
3. -1 I think the comment area when you more should be white BG so its easier to read and rarely used.
@Deciple I was wondering if You could make a gmail version same as you have it (Transparent) but make the text another color than green (not a fan of green), Maybe White main text and blue "from" text, just like in the stock Samsung email app.
Managed it problem solved

[APP] [Themed] NS4G MMS with Autosplit DenverG/1Dynasty Themes

**Make a Backup**
This is AOSP's mms.apk from oICS with AutoSplit for NS4G.
ICONS:
If you want to mix and match Icons, it's really easy to do and you don't have to decompile/recompile or anything like that. So I'm going to give you instructions on doing so rather than put up 15 or so versions of the same thing with different icons Go Here to see the instructions and to download the Icon Zips.
1Dynasty has created about 20 or so themes now so he's given me permission to include his many themed MMs apks, so this thread is going to get large quick. But here we go...
1Dynasty also got a hold of the information we needed to get the border lines out of this thing - which translates to GTalk as well. I'm going to update this thread throughout the day and probably tomorrow as well, as I get screenshots and such to put up.
If you download one of mine, you can thank me if you'd like. If you download one of 1Dynasty's, head over here and spank his like button At this point, this is a collaborative effort
So I'll start with my first borderless version, this is based off of the version I put into HoloBlue, I made a few subtle changes and removed the borderlines.
If you'd like to have vertical lines seperating the messages, here you go - grab HoloMMs_v1.1.zip
Go HERE to grab all of 1Dynaty's Themed MMs apks
How to make a backup zip (return to stock)
You can make a backup a couple of ways, either make a flashable ZIP with your original APK in it, or use an application like Root Browser/Explorer to rename the original APK.
I wrote this with mms.apk as an example. However, you can use this method to make a backup of any system app...
To make a flashable backup...
1. Make of copy of the ZIP file you downloaded. Name it MMS_Orig.zip (or something similar)
2. Use Root Browser/Explorer and navigate to system/app and copy mms.apk to your SD Card. Copy mms.apk from your SD Card to your desktop.
3. Open the copied/renamed zip file. Open the system folder. Open the app folder. There, you'll find the APK.
4. Right click on the apk and pick Delete. Take your original APK and drag and drop it into the system/app folder from the zip file.
To make a back up file...
1. Use Root Browser/Explorer and navigate to system/app and select mms.apk and choose to rename it. Rename it to mms.apk.bak.
2. To return to stock, use Root Browser/Explorer and navigate to system/app and delete mms.apk and then select mms.apk.bak and choose to rename it. Rename it to mms.apk.
3. Reboot.
Backup Apps...
1. Find and use an app like Titanium Backup to back up your stuff....

Yep. AOSP hooked us up with the autosplit for his oICS ROM. I should add that to the OP...

Nice. Thanks!
Edit.....up and running on beezy's AOSP 4.0.3 rom. Looks great. If its alright, I'll post a link over there.
Long days and pleasant nights............
Probably a dumb question, but will this work on CM9 alpha 18 nightly?
Thanks
Wow looks great! The send icon is a little dark tho. Also would be cool if you could make the bottom bar in messages dark like the top one. Thanks!
Edit: I also noticed the no contact picture icon in the phone app is darker. I think the white one in the mms app is a bit overpowering. Might it look better with the darker phone app icon?
Noob question(s):
So you are saying the mms.apk in oICS has auto-split built in? I am not interested in the themed colors, but I would like an auto-split stock MMS for the ROM that I am using. So can I just harvest the mms.apk from the oICS files, and then push it to my system folder and overwrite the one that is there? Is it 100% stock other than the auto-split feature? I didn't see autosplit mentioned in AOSP's OP, so I wasn't aware of it even when I was using that ROM for a few days.
Sidestory, I tried once to take stock MMS and add auto-split functionality myself by editing some values in an XML file... and it should have worked I thought, but for whatever reason it didn't. Probably something to do with me not knowing how to sign an apk. :-(

I would like this also. I found a thread for the Galaxy Nexus where someone was able to port several TW apps to work with AOSP but when I install them they are not formatted for our resolution. Maybe someone will be able to port those from
this thread.
+1
Stock ICS clock is bad, no Stop Watch
There is a stopwatch, but it is pretty poor compared to the Samsung one.
Inside the clock app, where you set the alarm, there is a sort of a title/tab on top-left that says "Alarms". If you click that, you'll be able to go to a stopwatch. Alternatively, you can go there through the menu button. I am on Doc's V4 and haven't tried other ICS roms, so YMMV.
What I don't like about that stopwatch is two things: It does not use a fixed width font, so the numbers keep "shaking". And it does not keep the phone from going to sleep, which pretty much makes it unusable to me.
So, a big +1 to the OP request.
TW clock is ready
Search for Nexus TW Clock ICS. The only problem I have with it - font and buttons are too big. SOmewhere there is a scale - lcd density or something which is wrong.
There is one for Epic 4G - with perfect size and it does everything - World time, timer, stopwatch, but not alarm! Alarm FC'es.
WTF!
Mystery of apktool
I tried combining these two from Epic and Nexus using apktool and baksmali. The code is almost identical - only one class differs and it's Alarm related. The resources are vastly different in picture sizes and xml's with "dip" in Epic vs "pix" in Nexus. So anyway - I copied Nexus class to Epic, and copied Epic resources to Nexus. None of these two after smaling and apktool build (without errors) got recognised in Launcher - no icons in app drawer, no .odex file in dalvik.
Any experts to solve the mystery?
Mystery is solved
New release is coming... Check out my ROM within couple of hours.

I pulled the clockpackage.apk from your rom. I copied to the system/app and rebooted. It didn't show up in my app drawer. So I rebooted into recovery and wiped cach partition, dalvik and fixed permissions. It still isn't showing up in my app drawer. Do you have any other suggestions? I'm running ICSSGS latest version.
Edit: Never mind. When I went into All Applications it was disabled. When I enabled it, it is working now.
Smart Alarm Problem
Thank you so much for updating the clock in Nostalgia!
I can't get the smart alarm function to work, though. No matter which smart alarm tone I choose, the "Good Morning" alarm sound plays. Am I missing something, or is there a glitch in the apk?

I had a similar problem until I found another thread with a solution. The solution was to add clockpackage.odex to system/app. I can't upload odex files, so it is attached in a .zip.
When you copy apk to /system/app - your permission on apk file get screwed up. Nice touch from FileManager writers. So you gotta fix them from the same Root Explorer or Browser to be 644 - read/write by owner, read by group, read by other.

Inverted Blue Gmail 4.2

Here is the new Gmail 4.2 with my touch of black and blue! To install simply place the apk on your SD card and install. If it does not overwrite your current Gmail then uninstall Gmail in your system/app and any com.android.Gmail in your data/app then install mine. Once installed go to system/app and ensure the permissions are set the same as all other apps then reboot. If it still does not install then adb push Gmail4.2.apk to system/app. Then once installed rewrite the permissions and reboot. Let me know if you have any problems installing, enjoy!

Thanx for this. Looks great. Love the black themes!
Pasted the apk into system/app (didn't use adb), changed permissions, etc and all is ok.
