Useful informations from NC users outside USA - Nook Color General

Hi, i've been long time lurker but never a poster on this site. I'm interested in nook color and since now i have a chance to buy one i've would be grateful if some of users from outside USA could give an insight in device.
1. I have read that since i'm living outside usa i can't use b&n's store. Do some of you use service like hotspot shield or something else for book purchase?
2.Also what about power output since here in croatia we have C type adapters? Do you just use regular converters for optimum charging time? a to ctype?
3. Did some of you had experience with returning device for battery replacements from your country?
I really like device but this small nuances are making me hard to decide whether to take a chance on NC. I tried to find similar posts but didn't find concrete answer. Any information would do, thanks in advance.

Hi
I am in the UK and have been running a Nook Color since I made an impulse purchase in the US in February. I registered at B&N.com but without credit card details as you need a US billing address.
I was initially on rooted stock 1.1, then Nookie Froyo for a bit but mostly on CM7 on EMMC. Currently on nightly 161. You can't use the B&N store and can't download the Nook app either. However I use it mostly as a tablet but also have the Kindle app for books.
Charging is no problem using a travel adapter.
Fingers crossed I have not had to return it. I think that could be problematic.
All in all I would thoroughly recommend the NC.

Just in answer to some your questions as am based in Singapore. Got mine in Feb as well.
1. Have heard that you can use hotspots but have not gotten to work for me. Main issue is us credit card for me. I think it will work. I use the Kindle app with no problems (except magazine subscriptions don't work for me).
2. I just use converter on plug. Doesn't seem to be any issues (doesn't allow for charging from PC though and a proprietary plug).
3. Have not had to replace battery. Based on my usage of light reading, can get about two days. Am on cm7 nightly 151. Don't think an issue. Chances are you will upgrade before battery is a problem. For it's price it is pretty good. Don't expect a full tablet experience though and if you don't mind fiddling, it is pretty good.

Thanks a lot to you both.
What do i have to do after i buy it? I don't have to tell them billing address or could i just tell them one in my country? Do i have to register to b&n immediately or i can do that from Croatia?
Since my sister is the one who is going to USA i need to tell her every step

I had no problem with magazine subscription using Singapore issued card. However you have to use vpn instead. I used hotspotshield then. You should try the magazine subscription, the article view has make the magazine reading an interesting experience.
I had a kindle before, again I had no problem with magazine subscription too. I like my NookColor alot more than the Kindle. The color, the touch screen and the angry bird ...

Chinhuat, are you using stock nook app or are on cm build? I might try again. Maybe they have relaxed the rule.
Btw, when you first turn on nook, you need to activate. I did this in the US just in case (easier to return early as well)

My NookColor was rooted with Auto-Nooter 2.12.25 (1.0.1 Only) then. And I was able to to access both the NookColor apps and Android Market. Now I had just rooted with cm7, and still trying to figure out in accessing the BN magazine store.
I subscribed the magazine via the BN website. And the magazine was pushed down to my NookColor. And I use hotspotshield.

I had been using Hot spot shield, but recently don't get any epub purchases go through.
Makes me think they're cross checking card address with that on my B&N reg..
Anyone know of any other work around?
Cheers,

The charger is rated at 120/240v 50/60 Hz, so you only need an adapter, not a converter. It will charge via USB from a computer but that is much slower.

Thanks!!! I didn't realise that so I've been charging via USB all this time, lol. Just tried with a borrowed US adapter and it seems to work!
I originally purchased an ebay 240v 2.1A power supply but it still only charged at usb speed. This is great.

[Q] In the military looking at getting NC

Hello everyone, I have recently enlisted in the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman and I ship out in a few months. I have been looking at buying a e-reader for sometime now because I have recently become a big bookworm. I love to read, something I never did earlier in my life until now. From what I have heard from people in the Navy you need to have at least one of 3 things when deployed at sea. Either be a people person, love music, or love books. The aspect of having a e-reader seems great because you only get a small space in your berthing racks for personal items. Having a small device that can hold LOTS of books is great. I am also a very big android fan. I had the original grandfather of android devices the T-mobile G1 (rooted with CM 6.1) and now a T-mobile G2 (rooted with Vitourious) . So i been trying to do my research before buying one. I have a few questions that I haven't been able to find CLEAR answers for.
1. I have been finding a mixed answers on battery life. How long will it last with say moderate reading?
2. Video play back? I read that it can and cant play back avi files and such.... i believe it needs to be rooted to do so? I would love to be able to watch movies on this that I can pre-load on sd cards and bring a nice library of movies with me.
3. In-store access with rooted NC, I read that yes you can get on, and that you cant. I have 6 months before I leave and have a BN store nearby, would like to access free content before I leave.
4. Will rooting the phone take away from any of the original e-reader functions? Will i still be able to buy BN books from the device? This will be mostly a e-reader that can be used for movies, music and photo viewing.
5. Not as important just thought of it, but are there any cases for the NC that hold extra sd cards? A small pocket that can be used for this?
Basically im looking to use this device almost as a laptop replacement. I will not be able to access any wifi networks on ship with a personal laptop or device. They provide Department of Defense computers to access your DOD email and and limited internet. I could possibly get wifi access in some ports but its not gonna be common. So if I can use the device to do the things I mentioned above and maybe some games IE angry birds, and take up a minimal space in my rack. This device for the price it is I don't think i can find something better. If you know of a device that could be better, such as a ipad (hate apple) or the galaxy tab, if its worth the upgrade in price let me know. But I want to use it as a E-reader first.
Thanks for any help.
Ben
1. I have been finding a mixed answers on battery life. How long will it last with say moderate reading?
I would guestimate about 6-8 hours of reading
2. Video play back? I read that it can and cant play back avi files and such.... i believe it needs to be rooted to do so? I would love to be able to watch movies on this that I can pre-load on sd cards and bring a nice library of movies with me.
Even rooted some videos are choppy. If you format the videos into one more suited for the NC, it'll play them very well. You could do this before you leave, but doubtful you'll be able to once you ship out. In 6 months time though, a lot can happen, likely a stable Froyo that will play most videos.
3. In-store access with rooted NC, I read that yes you can get on, and that you cant. I have 6 months before I leave and have a BN store nearby, would like to access free content before I leave.
There currently is no Android market on any nook color, rooted or not. You can side-load applications with a rooted one, but until someone gets the setup wizard working or a stock android version, you likely won't have the market. The guy at B&N told me that the Android market was going to be available in a future patch, sometime early next year, but take that with a grain of salt since it's from someone in a retail store.
Also, since you've already got an android phone, you can download applications from your phone and load them onto your NC, so it's almost the entire app store with just a little more hassle of moving them over. Of course, there are plenty of apps that don't work yet, but that should change with future modding
4. Will rooting the phone take away from any of the original e-reader functions? Will i still be able to buy BN books from the device? This will be mostly a e-reader that can be used for movies, music and photo viewing.
You still have access to the B&N app post-root, but even better you've got access to the Amazon Kindle app.
5. Not as important just thought of it, but are there any cases for the NC that hold extra sd cards? A small pocket that can be used for this?
No idea, might want to have a look around to see what's available. You can always glue an envelope of some kind to the inside of a case. The Micro SD cards are tiny, so you'll want to store them safely.
Basically im looking to use this device almost as a laptop replacement. I will not be able to access any wifi networks on ship with a personal laptop or device. It's far from a laptop replacement. With "hacking" anything you are at the mercy of the device if you don't have a computer to hook it up to if something goes wrong. The iPad is going to be much more stable, as well as have more apps made for it. Of course, it's 2-3 times the price. The Galaxy Tab is going to be the same thing I think. Since you've got time to wait, you might want to see where the modding goes with the NC. If a stock Froyo build comes out for it, it'll probably be the best tablet on the market for the price, with only some missing features of the Tab (that you likely wouldn't use anyway.

When I was on float, it was eat, sleep and work out. Not much more. Depending on what boat you are on though, there are lots of opportunities if you avail yourself.

I've only had my NC for less than a week but, I can tell you that it's my favorite Android device to date. There are lots of things to keep you occupied during your down time. The NC and a small netbook (I use an eeePC running Ubuntu) take up less space than most laptops but the combination gives you all you need to tinker with the NC and Android in general.

I'm seeing 6-7 hrs and that includes wifi on, surfing, tinkering, playing games, etc. I would imagine that with the backlight turned down and reading in your rack, you can expect the same or more.

You simply have to make sure that the videos have video resolution that is compatible with the NC as well as audio that is compatible. There is a thread here on xda-devs that addresses the exact settings that have worked well for others. I've not run into any issues personally.

No. At least not the methods that are available today. Once custom ROMs roll, you'll need to make sure that you install the proprietary B&N Apks on top of the custom ROM since that proprietary SW can't be bundled into the ROMs. My currently rooted (original method) NC maintains all of the original features. Rooting it simply allowed me to unlock the capabilities of the hardware.

There are a ton of cases for the NC available at B&N. The ones I looked at had "pockets" in them as well. Do you really anticipate reading several hundred books during a 6-month deployment on float? You can get enough storage to put several thousand books on for very cheap. Why carry multiple little SD's when you can simply use one large one?

Get a netbook as well as the Nook Color. You're gonna want a keyboard (a real one) at times. You can pick up an eeePC for very close to the same price as the Nook Color. For just over $500, you now have a netbook and a tablet. Your bases are covered.

[Q] Before I buy..

I am going to Barnes & Noble today to get the Nook Color. I want to buy it so I can root it and use it as a tablet/ereader. Are the newest version of the NC's rootable or do I need to buy an older version off eBay or something. Thanks in advance!
No, you're fine. The current firmware, 1.01, is rootable. It'll probably come with 1.0 anyway.
If you want a great value on a quality android tablet, I don't think you'll be disappointed!

Buy two nooks, set them next to each other, and cross your eyes a lot. Now you hve a 3d tablet for $100 less than a galaxy tablet...

If you can live without GPS, cameras, 3G, etc., I see no reason to pay over twice as much for a Galaxy Tab. Mine has everything I would have wanted from a Galaxy Tab-- and this is without a custom ROM.

Yes, I bring my evo everywhere, so I can just easily tether to it, I don't need GPS or cameras because obviously the evo has them.

Yep - that's exactly what I do. Wireless Tether app (version pre-12 I think I'm using) works great.
While there's no GPS for navigation, it gets other location services from the network, so Google Maps and whatnot get my location to within 100 yards or so.
I’m using my DroidX to tether.
I don’t need camera and crap on the tablet.
I have NFS Shift running on mine flawlessly along with just about all the apps I’ve installed.
I think the new thread should be “what does not work”. Everything I’m using sems to work.

Cool, thanks for the feedback
You may want to buy somewhere that has a better return policy, but thats really up to you.
When I was at B&N today just to look, two people walked in within 5 minutes with defective units...One had no WIFI, the other had screen issues.
They sent the guy with no Wifi home, telling him he must have typed in his password wrong...They would not exchange for him.. They never even looked at it.
They sent the lady home because she did not have her charger.
I JUST bought mine at Best Buy...First one had a dead dark pixel right smack in the middle of the screen, also had some dust and the flicker everyone mentions..
I exchanged it, however they really gave it the 3rd degree and looked like they did not want to exchange it..They pulled all the packaging apart, turned it on, went through all the menues, etc....
Second one is in good shape, but does have a stuck pixel that only is seen on a full black screen..I can live with that I guess.
Examine yours closely, because I have a feeling there is quality issues.
I would assume they are getting a large amount of returns now and are probably going through them thoroughly..
Alright thanks, I might consider buying from Best Buy then instead.
Just got mine Christmas Eve. I had looked long and hard at a Galaxy Tab. But at the price, I just couldn't pass up the Nook. With rooting, it is everything that I wanted in a pad. As mentioned before, coupled with my rooted HD2, it is an awesome duo.
And as a stand-alone, the Nook does everything I could want. It came with 1.0, but updating was simple. Auto-nootering was just as simple. AWESOMENESS!
Another possibility for the return scrutiny is that that B&N/Best Buy are now well aware of what many are doing with these, and are happy to sell more units--as long as it isn't causing them to lose money.
. . . And one way they could lose money is if people screw things up rooting and want a replacement or refund. Dead pixels have nothing to do with rooting, but the retail world could easily over-generalize as "don't take NookColor returns lightly."

Finally Found one!!!!

Ive finally found a nook color... Ive called every store in a 70mile radius of the lakeland tampa orlando area, and ive got my sights (and name) on my own nook color in orlando..
I cant wait to have my nook rooted and playing with it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I thought i was going to have to wait until 2/15+ for my nooky
ive got two rooted droid 1's and i know rooting is different. I wifi tether my D1 to my laptop. I think it creates a ad-hoc style network... will the nook connect to it? I know my two droids have issues tethering the wifi to eachother
I was just in best buy and they put 12 in front if me while looking at cases. Just put a screen protector on mine (must have VERY sensative screen) and got the case i ordered from b&n. By the way up in panama city come here if you cabt find a nook

You have to tweak it a hit to enable ad hoc wifi. Go look in the developer area and you'll see a thread dedicated to that. Its not difficult though. Enjoy!

The only problem I've found with the ad-hoc fix is that WiFi has to be toggled off and on to get WiFi to work after the Nook Color sleeps.

Nice to hear. Funny how these things are harder to come by these days? Seems like they are blaming it on the weather....
Bump this thread...
Looks like they have it back online... I have been watching this device for a few days, since it seems to be available again, it's time to jump in...
Anyone can confirm this "availability"...
Yuppers, looks like B&N FINALLY has some nooks! My 2nd one has been on back order since jan 13 with an ESD of Jan. 28, and it actually shipped on time. I am really getting tired of not having any sound on my nook, and have been itchin for my new one!! (Note: I don't live within 100 miles of a B&N store, and since my exchange is a warranty issue, I couldn't just return it and buy one somewhere else, I had to go through cust. svc.)
Indianapolis - Best Buy has them pulled in store and not shipping for 2 weeks.
B & N has them in stores and on-line.
This is good, I was going to pay too much for one on Ebay (missed one at 190, every other one is 275 and up), so now I will take my time, look for a sale (hopefully) especially from BB.
Im so happy with my nook color... thanks for the ad-hoc tip. Im sitting at a park with friends giving gifts to kids who aren't mine lol..., my rooted droid is sitting in my pocket and tethering wifi

Google Tv

Does anyone have or have used one of the Google Tv boxes? I know they have one with Blu-Ray and one without. I really been wanting to get one but am trying to hold out until Sony drops the new NSZ-GP9 Blu-Ray Google Tv (This month I hope) But anyway I'm just trying to get some peoples thoughts on Sony Google Tv before I go out and drop $299 on it, is it worth it?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
I bought the Logitech Revue right when it came out and returned it after a couple weeks. Kevin Bacon must have a lot of patience because it was SLOW. I think they dropped it down to $99 if you can still find one. I think that device tanked. My buddy has (one of?) the Sony BD Gtv boxes, but I've never used it. I'll ask him if he still has it and what he thinks about it.
Awesome thank you please do. Like I said there's two out right now one with Blu ray and one without, and then sometime this month they have a new one coming out with Blu ray and that's the 1 I'm looking into getting, but I'm still looking for user experiences with the past 2 Sony ones.

This thread was hard to find again, it got buried quick. I finally spoke with my buddy who has the old Sony BD Gtv.. I asked him if he would recommend it and he said he absolutely would, he's been very happy with it. He said he would buy it again. Hope that helps.
I love my GTV!!!!!
Hey guys!
I purchased the Sony stand-alone/bluray unit a little over one month after it came out. At first yes, the unit was slow and the browser was awful. But now after one major update (honeycombe) and a couple of extra security updates, it is the best unit I've ever had for my TV!
Only downside is not having DVR capability and (if you hitch for it, which I don't...) not being able to view Hulu directly from the browser. The "agent hack" doesn't work anymore, so you have to purchase montly and use Hulu+.....but it interfaces with my Comcast HD box (via HDMI) FAWLESSLY! the sony remote controls everything: TV, cable box and obviously the GTV
I love the search capabilities of the unit giving live TV + web, amazon and netlix results for things you search. Full Playstore access, widgets...I can't say enough fantastic things about it!
Fanboy? maybe a little
Hi,
I just wanted to ask this question. I searched the forum and could not get the answer I was looking for. Maybe it was asked , sorry if this is a repeat question.
The thing is, I want to get the Sony Bluray GTV1. I live outside the USA and I was wondering if, with the help of StrongVPN, use the GTV to the fullest in my country. We don't have the same cable providers as the US, but we do have digital cable. My theory is that if I connect my digital cable settop box to the GTV and use StrongVPN I will be able to get it to work. My biggest doubt is if the Search app will work with live tv content. Does GTV pulls data from the cable settop and parses it to show it on search results? Or does it rely on the location (ZIP code) and cable provided to pull the data from somewhere else?
How would I be able to configure a location during setup if I'm not in the US? I have a good idea where my cable provider pulls its feed, since NBC shows Fort Lauderdale local news i'd say its located there, however, not all channels come from the US, we also have south american channels and such. Will those show up on Search results?
Also, my cable provider gives me a DVR capable settop box, would that also work with GTV's DVR features and Pay-Per-View content?
Please help.
If I cannot get Search to pull results from my listings at my cable provider then its a deal breaker for me. I live in Costa Rica and my provider is CableTica.
Thanks.

I ended uo getting the newest one, the one without the Blu Ray player and I absolutely love it. I was trying to hold out for the new one with Blu Ray. It was set to be out in October but on the Sony website it still doesn't give an exact date so instead of waiting I purchased this one.

HD+ Official Charger / 30-pin Data Cable

One of the things I do with all of the mobile devices I purchase is to buy an official replacement/spare charger (and cable for those which are of proprietary design). I have been unable to source such a thing in the UK and looking at the B&N US website it only shows 2 chargers (only 1 with a cable) and neither is listed as compatible either Nook HD or HD+.
Do B&N sell spare chargers and data cables for the HD/HD+? Is either of the 2 listed on the B&N US website compatible with HD/HD+ and contain a UK 3-pin plug? Is there anywhere else that I can get the data cable?
I don't mind getting stuff shipped over for the US.
How much i looked around (even china and taiwan market) i have not found any replacement. Even more ... I have 12 US versions of Nook HD+ and soon order more. What i need is only EU chargers. I tested many second market chargers and still found only one which is charging. But no one make spare cable. Seems Nook HD/HD+ is so rare item that second market manufacturers do not produce chargers/cables.

Seems Nook HD/HD+ is so rare item that second market manufacturers do not produce chargers/cables.

It is too new. We all forget since we are so far along on this thing that it only was introduced in November.

I would like to argue little
If we see some tech/mob item which one get big attention over world tech press (let say for as an example Apple new connector Lightning) we can find it on second market on next month after first real sale.
Yes B&N cable and charger depends little at this which of magnitude Nook HD/HD+ real hardware producer is.
Anyway, lets see which way all goes. I think on this we cant change the course of events. Only on software side

Part of that is true. It also depends on the popularity of the device and the potential market for making the item. No one ever made the special connector on the Nook Color device even though it is over two years old and has sold many, many devices. Either no one saw a market for it (which I doubt, since the replacement market was huge since it was so fragile) or B&N had it patented, which would discourage third party manufacturers.

What about this one?

Or is that just a 30 pin iPod cable??
Update: I emailed the seller. He said it is the correct cable, and he'll update the picture to show this
Actuaaly i dont know why ... but i think its not real Nook cable. It looks very similar with ipad/ipod cable. But this is only my own opinion.
Its great to know that some company started make this cable.
The cable is now on sale from B&N in the US:

Hmm ... interesting ... this maybe only guess but ... I think seriously that B&N stuff closely monitor what is going on XDA NookHD/NookHD+ forums.

Now it is August...
OK, gang -
We are 6mo farther down the road. Has anybody seen a pinout listing for the Nook HD+?? Thankfully they added Google Play, and I have the Apex launcher installed over the stock launcher... and have a reasonable tablet. I already have 2amp chargers at home and work for my current phone, previous tablet, etc... I really DON'T want another (EXPENSIVE!!) wall wart near my bed stand and in my cubicle to specially charge the Nook. Guess I don't mind TOO much buying proprietary cables, but com' on... charge cubes??
Looking for some relief here from the way over priced.... Thanks
does anyone know the pinout of the cable, and if there's some DRM on it? 15 bucks is steep for a cable... for that price it better be a Monster cable
i'm wondering if it's possible to make an adaptor and just use normal usb cables with it.
Anyone know if a Blackberry Playbook charger and/or an HP Touchpad charger will work?
Touch pad uses micro SD. Pretty sure the play book takes the same

As a playbook owner I confirm this.

I am pretty sure you mean "Micro USB" and not USB.
This has a proprietary plug that only the Nook uses.
Mediapad FHD cables are reported to be compatible in the hdmi thread. Any test drivers?

Its not compatible. The next best thing is to snap up all cables when on sale.
