Google Tv - Off-topic

Does anyone have or have used one of the Google Tv boxes? I know they have one with Blu-Ray and one without. I really been wanting to get one but am trying to hold out until Sony drops the new NSZ-GP9 Blu-Ray Google Tv (This month I hope) But anyway I'm just trying to get some peoples thoughts on Sony Google Tv before I go out and drop $299 on it, is it worth it?

I bought the Logitech Revue right when it came out and returned it after a couple weeks. Kevin Bacon must have a lot of patience because it was SLOW. I think they dropped it down to $99 if you can still find one. I think that device tanked. My buddy has (one of?) the Sony BD Gtv boxes, but I've never used it. I'll ask him if he still has it and what he thinks about it.

Awesome thank you please do. Like I said there's two out right now one with Blu ray and one without, and then sometime this month they have a new one coming out with Blu ray and that's the 1 I'm looking into getting, but I'm still looking for user experiences with the past 2 Sony ones.

This thread was hard to find again, it got buried quick. I finally spoke with my buddy who has the old Sony BD Gtv.. I asked him if he would recommend it and he said he absolutely would, he's been very happy with it. He said he would buy it again. Hope that helps.

I love my GTV!!!!!
Hey guys!
I purchased the Sony stand-alone/bluray unit a little over one month after it came out. At first yes, the unit was slow and the browser was awful. But now after one major update (honeycombe) and a couple of extra security updates, it is the best unit I've ever had for my TV!
Only downside is not having DVR capability and (if you hitch for it, which I don't...) not being able to view Hulu directly from the browser. The "agent hack" doesn't work anymore, so you have to purchase montly and use Hulu+.....but it interfaces with my Comcast HD box (via HDMI) FAWLESSLY! the sony remote controls everything: TV, cable box and obviously the GTV
I love the search capabilities of the unit giving live TV + web, amazon and netlix results for things you search. Full Playstore access, widgets...I can't say enough fantastic things about it!
Fanboy? maybe a little

Hi,
I just wanted to ask this question. I searched the forum and could not get the answer I was looking for. Maybe it was asked , sorry if this is a repeat question.
The thing is, I want to get the Sony Bluray GTV1. I live outside the USA and I was wondering if, with the help of StrongVPN, use the GTV to the fullest in my country. We don't have the same cable providers as the US, but we do have digital cable. My theory is that if I connect my digital cable settop box to the GTV and use StrongVPN I will be able to get it to work. My biggest doubt is if the Search app will work with live tv content. Does GTV pulls data from the cable settop and parses it to show it on search results? Or does it rely on the location (ZIP code) and cable provided to pull the data from somewhere else?
How would I be able to configure a location during setup if I'm not in the US? I have a good idea where my cable provider pulls its feed, since NBC shows Fort Lauderdale local news i'd say its located there, however, not all channels come from the US, we also have south american channels and such. Will those show up on Search results?
Also, my cable provider gives me a DVR capable settop box, would that also work with GTV's DVR features and Pay-Per-View content?
Please help.
If I cannot get Search to pull results from my listings at my cable provider then its a deal breaker for me. I live in Costa Rica and my provider is CableTica.
Thanks.

I ended uo getting the newest one, the one without the Blu Ray player and I absolutely love it. I was trying to hold out for the new one with Blu Ray. It was set to be out in October but on the Sony website it still doesn't give an exact date so instead of waiting I purchased this one.

AT&T MediaFLO - for us?

Apparently this new service is coming out in two weeks or so for the LG Vu and Samsung Access. Not sure what OSes they use, but what chance do you think we have of seeing it on the Tilt? I know there's the driver issues, plus I'm not even sure the Tilt has the hardware... apparently this is some separate network...?
Someone smarter than me should look into this.
PS - Just curious, as I can't see myself paying more for TV - Comcast already drains me...

from my recollection that LG VU, from when I saw it at the CES show in Las Vegas earlier this year, uses Windows Mobile.
when i bought my tilt from at&t it already had something similar to it, i never used it cause i can't stand the 13" tv at my house so watching on a phone seemed pointless. so i deleted the program and flashed a new ROM and now i have games rather than tv. if someone wanted to give me satellite or cable on my phone and i could watch my shows while i'm at work, then it would be a great program. 9 channels for $30 a month is as bad as cable, overpriced and no features

Hm... just tried MobiTV for the first time. Video is very stop and go, but it's kinda neat - and I can listen, if nothing else. It's only $10/month.
But since we don't want to pay for more TV access, I think Slingbox or a similar technology is our only hope.
That, and HTC drivers...

Useful informations from NC users outside USA

Hi, i've been long time lurker but never a poster on this site. I'm interested in nook color and since now i have a chance to buy one i've would be grateful if some of users from outside USA could give an insight in device.
1. I have read that since i'm living outside usa i can't use b&n's store. Do some of you use service like hotspot shield or something else for book purchase?
2.Also what about power output since here in croatia we have C type adapters? Do you just use regular converters for optimum charging time? a to ctype?
3. Did some of you had experience with returning device for battery replacements from your country?
I really like device but this small nuances are making me hard to decide whether to take a chance on NC. I tried to find similar posts but didn't find concrete answer. Any information would do, thanks in advance.
Hi
I am in the UK and have been running a Nook Color since I made an impulse purchase in the US in February. I registered at B&N.com but without credit card details as you need a US billing address.
I was initially on rooted stock 1.1, then Nookie Froyo for a bit but mostly on CM7 on EMMC. Currently on nightly 161. You can't use the B&N store and can't download the Nook app either. However I use it mostly as a tablet but also have the Kindle app for books.
Charging is no problem using a travel adapter.
Fingers crossed I have not had to return it. I think that could be problematic.
All in all I would thoroughly recommend the NC.

Just in answer to some your questions as am based in Singapore. Got mine in Feb as well.
1. Have heard that you can use hotspots but have not gotten to work for me. Main issue is us credit card for me. I think it will work. I use the Kindle app with no problems (except magazine subscriptions don't work for me).
2. I just use converter on plug. Doesn't seem to be any issues (doesn't allow for charging from PC though and a proprietary plug).
3. Have not had to replace battery. Based on my usage of light reading, can get about two days. Am on cm7 nightly 151. Don't think an issue. Chances are you will upgrade before battery is a problem. For it's price it is pretty good. Don't expect a full tablet experience though and if you don't mind fiddling, it is pretty good.

Thanks a lot to you both.
What do i have to do after i buy it? I don't have to tell them billing address or could i just tell them one in my country? Do i have to register to b&n immediately or i can do that from Croatia?
Since my sister is the one who is going to USA i need to tell her every step

I had no problem with magazine subscription using Singapore issued card. However you have to use vpn instead. I used hotspotshield then. You should try the magazine subscription, the article view has make the magazine reading an interesting experience.
I had a kindle before, again I had no problem with magazine subscription too. I like my NookColor alot more than the Kindle. The color, the touch screen and the angry bird ...
Chinhuat, are you using stock nook app or are on cm build? I might try again. Maybe they have relaxed the rule.
Btw, when you first turn on nook, you need to activate. I did this in the US just in case (easier to return early as well)

My NookColor was rooted with Auto-Nooter 2.12.25 (1.0.1 Only) then. And I was able to to access both the NookColor apps and Android Market. Now I had just rooted with cm7, and still trying to figure out in accessing the BN magazine store.
I subscribed the magazine via the BN website. And the magazine was pushed down to my NookColor. And I use hotspotshield.
I had been using Hot spot shield, but recently don't get any epub purchases go through.
Makes me think they're cross checking card address with that on my B&N reg..
Anyone know of any other work around?
Cheers,
The charger is rated at 120/240v 50/60 Hz, so you only need an adapter, not a converter. It will charge via USB from a computer but that is much slower.

Thanks!!! I didn't realise that so I've been charging via USB all this time, lol. Just tried with a borrowed US adapter and it seems to work!
I originally purchased an ebay 240v 2.1A power supply but it still only charged at usb speed. This is great.

Elgato EyeTV Micro

I've just become the proud owner of an Elgato EyeTV DVB-TV tuner.
I've been looking for a DVB-T tuner that works on a tablet for ages, tried to get one working on my Advent vega, wrecked my linux install on my laptop trying to generate the necessary files, so gave up on that one. Tried to get a tuner for my Sony Tablet S that was promoted in Japan for that tablet, I could'nt source one - very frustrating hunt.
Then I saw a post on here that mentioned the Elgato - did a search on Amazon and ordered it immediately, 4 days later I was watching tv on my Nexus 10 (also my Nexus 7 and my Note 2 - so a 3 way win for me).
The dongle is absolutely tiny, just a bit larger than a postage stamp and plugs in directly to the USB port on the N10.
It comes with a telescopic aerial which gets me all the freeview channels, even in the middle of my living room which is way better then my 7" portable that does not get any channels anywhere in my house !
For situations that require it there is also a cabled magmount aerial included, I've not needed this yet, but tried it in my house and got the same result as with the telescopic.
It also comes with an adapter that allows use with a laptop/PC/Mac so I suppose that makes it a 4 way win for me really.
The software is downloaded as an APK from the market for the Android devices, and is downloaded from Elgato's website for PC/Mac use.
The APK installed painlessly and when fired up, tuned in all the Freeview stations without any problems. Although the software is pretty basic, it does what's needed very well and I can't complain at all.
All in all a very pleasant experience, and I can wholeheartedly recommend this little beauty to anyone wanting TV on the go.
Nice find, been wanting something like this for ages. Can you please post a link to the exact item on amazon and also the play store software?

I couldn't find the device on the US store, so here's the UK store link so you can have a look at the device. If you are able to find one, make sure it's the "micro" version with a micro usb, there is an Apple version that looks identical except for the iPod type connector.
I forgot to mention in my original post that this device is only slightly larger than a postage stamp, tiny and very light.

You did not find it in the US store because it will not work in the US it only works in Europe and some other countries. Check the Elgato web site for specifics.

Chromecast

for those like me who wanted to get the chromecast today from the play store (https://play.google.com/store/devices/details?id=chromecast) only to find out that they are "out of inventory," hope is not lost. it's available on amazon too. if you search amazon for chromecast, at least for now, you get nothing (at least for now). it IS on amazon, just not available in the search results yet.
here is the amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00DR0PDNE/ref=redir_mdp_mobile?redirect=true&ref_=tv_srch_google
get it while it's hot!
Would be much nicer if it allowed for mirroring of the device on the TV
Some Best Buys have them on sale now. I called the one near me they said they would have them tomorrow morning.

Does anybody know if I can plug this into my A/V receiver's HDMI port instead of my TV, would rather hear the sound through my HT speakers and not my TV's..
Would the chromecast then turn on the receiver and switch to the correct input? THAT would be just AWESOME..!
And in general, the auto turn on and switching input is triggered by sending a video/audio from phone/tablet/PC to chromecast?
I just realized, the link here removed that part about being Mediacast compliant. Not sure why Google didn't make it's own device so that the Nexus can stream to TV's like they initially advertised.
Also this thing isn't an Apple TV, which I realized the more I read into this. The content has to be on the cloud, so already uploaded somewhere like on Netflix or Youtube or even your Google Play account in order to work. You can't just take a picture or video or song from your computer/tablet/phone and send it to the TV. It really doesn't do much other than turn your phone into a remote control to play Youtube videos and things like that. Which is also why it can't mirror or anything, since it's not necessarily connected to your phone/tablet, other than that initial request to open a specific URL.

I don't know, still looks like it's simply opening the URL of the website onto the TV. Then again, this is a cut version, I didn't really watch the full version so I'm not sure. I'll check it up in a while and get back to you.
I wonder if this could be ported to a cheap arm board? The Chromecast receiver would rock on a Raspberry Pi.

[Q] Return my Chromecast and buy one that I can root?

I got my Chromecast just a few weeks ago and I'm a Best Buy "Reward Zone" Member. Being a Reward Zone Member gives me up to 60 days to return purchased items back to the store....with a receipt, obviously. When I got mine, it was quickly automatically updated and I was never afforded the opportunity to root my Chromecast. Do ya'll think I can package my Chromecast back up and return it to Best Buy and purchase another one that is HOPEFULLY still running the original version that allows for it to be rooted? Basically what I'm wondering is if I return my Chromecast back to my local Best Buy retail store and buy another one, will the "newer" one that I pick up still be running the original system that they initially shipped with that enabled for users to root it? I'm asking because I really have wanted to root this thing, but just never have been able to, due to it receiving the automatic OTA shortly after using it for the first time a few weeks ago. I wouldn't think that the more recent Chromecasts would come shipped with the newer OTA's already, would they? I'm just hoping to pick up another one that I can actually root. Ya'lls thoughts?
Why?
The number of unrooted devices is truly tiny, so developers for it are fleetingly few. Also there's no significant advantage to being unrooted.
Couple that with the infetesimal chance of getting an original release device from Best Buy begs the effort.
I don't mean to be unduly negative but such little chance for such minor gain, again, why?

I think you mean "rooted"
Thank you, correct, rooted.
I think that if you can have a rooted chromecast, it's a good thing.
I do admit that at present there are no advantages to being rooted.
But the future is unknown.
Example : what if google decides to never permit the general developer casting apps like fling or allcast? Theoretically, developers can totally rewrite the chromecast firmware to be the device they want it to be. However it will be very difficult or impossible to install such new firmware on an unrooted chromecast.
So the only benefits are unknown future imaginative features which google may never allow.
I bought another Chromecast from BestBuy on Friday and it still had the original firmware. This BestBuy had been sold out of Chromecast already, so this was probably their second or third shipment. So it's definitely possible to get an original firmware Chromecast, although there is no guarantee.

I'm not for sure, likewise for anyone else, when Google will be shipping these devices with updated firmware, so I'm gonna take my chances and get another one soon. And the reasons mentioned in the above posts are the main driving factors for my decision. If I'm going to spend $35 of my hard earned money, I'm gonna get every penny out of it that I can. Being locked down like Google has us now, was not in my plans when I first bought this thing.

You must not allow the chromecast to connect to a wifi ssid / network which has Internet.
In my case, I had an old asus (dd-wrt) router laying around. I powered it up with nothing plugged into it. No rj45 cat 5/6 cables connected. Switched my phone wifi to this wireless ssid network. Ran the chromecast app, it found the chromecast, set up the chromecast to use this no Internet network by selecting it & typing in the router's password. After setting up the chromecast, the app shows the firmware version as being 12072.
If you allow the chromecast to connect to a wifi network which has Internet, then it will quickly auto update to a firmware version which can not currently be rooted.

The rooted firmware bin files from tvall have the auto update function disabled.
I just got my Chromecast a couple of days ago and have been reading several threads. I connected it to WiFi with no Internet and found that it still has 12072. Is there any way ti still use Allcast or Fling if I use one of tvall's images to disable updates? I found a previous version of the Chromecast apk and installed Allcast B4 but Allcast just comes up with a blank page. I thought it might be possible to stream local content with no Internet access.

Technically, I'd say that you would be able to, since it wouldn't be using the internet to stream the video. I'm FAR from an expert on all this though...lol

I was actually wondering the same thing too...if we would be able to use the "Fling" PC Java program and/or the "AllCast"/"AirCast" Android apps, just as long as our Chromecasts are on the original (v.12072) firmware..

Couple of questions:Where I can find Fling? The link in dropbox is dead. The firmware in my Chromecast shows 12072 can I still root the device?

You had better do it QUICK, and I mean SUPER-HUMAN QUICK !! lol You're probably up the creek if it's been on for any decent amount of time. As far as I know, as soon as you turn it off and whenever you power it back up, it'll install that automatically downloaded OTA that it has already downloaded behind the scenes and stored on its memory. This is what *SHOULD* happen...just what I've heard by things I've read on here.

Nope, my first Chromecast installed the auto-OTA and each following update after leaving it plugged in, so I just went and got another Chromecast a few days ago. I ordered the recommended OTG cable from Amazon.com this past Thurs or Fri night. It's scheduled to arrive here at our house sometime around the end of this week(Thurs-Sat) sometime. After it gets here, I'm gonna root it before playin around with it. And if you're wondering, YES, the 2nd Chromecast that I got is STILL sitting in the box, just waiting for the OTG cable to arrive. It's too tempting to take it out and play around with it, but I know I had better just hold off till that cable gets here, otherwise I'd be just throwing that money that I spent on the cable down the drain.

Any ideal of which OTG cable from amazon to get? I see them from 1.00 to 10.00. I don't want to spend more than I have to.
Just ordered my chromecast to pick up in our local best buy and want to root it in case it has the older firmware.
Thanks
