im a newb at this, and want to install that theme on my captivate, i have the rom flashed and everything.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1128676
you should ask this question in the Blue Medley thread.
or maybe do a search on how to install themes. Have you tried searching?
Um, download and install...I'm not sure what you mean to be honest.
You have the ROM.
Get the Theme.
Install per the super easy directions.
(Hint CWM)
just download and flash through clockwork mod.
http://brymanthemes.weebly.com/
or do a search for ACS Updater.... install it. Then read the instructions on how to use it and you can flash the theme via ACS. It makes life SUPER easy instead of having to flash via CWM. I know that might be a bit too much for someone new to flashing but I highly reccommend it!

Just don't restore through that app. It's caused bootloops.

Thanks Bryman! I had never tried restoring and wasn't aware of that so I appreciate the advice as well!

Anyone know of some sort of one click or easy rom installer that a beginner could do? I've rooted, but updating the g1 to froyo is just so intimidating. Anyone know of some sort of one click installer?
No. Several parts of the system need to be updated, so that isn't possible.
Just tell us what you need help with.
the "easiest" way to install a rom is through the ROM manager app that requires ClockwordMod recovery, but I've heard that it is pretty unreliable for the G1. I personally use AmonRa 1.7
same here. AmonRa is in fact the best way as it frees up the needed files to be changed or removed when installing a rom.
its quite simple to install a froyo rom. im a novice myself and found it easy to do. takes about 10 mins if you include collecting and transfering the files you need
Can anyone explain the steps to upgrade to froyo from 1.6 with AmonRa 1.7? Did a search, couldn't find anything on the topic. Thanks in advance!
most devs actually put this in their threads with the rom they have created. if not check out cyanogens wiki on his website. he has some information on how to do it on there.
I think all you really need to do is install the rom through amonra then if you want google apps, find one that will work with it and install that.
I'm sort of confused as to what AmonRa actually is. What does it do?

Mind giving your current setup is first?
ROM (which 1.6, CM4?) ? Recovery (RA-1.7.0 I guess)? SPL (Danger perhaps?)?

I'm not rooted and have no custom roms installed...just stock ota 1.6 donut...I know how to root. But the froyo part just confuses me. What's amonra and how is it used to install froyo? All the guides confuse me...can someone break down everything to a beginner level so I can understand it a little more? I'm naturally good at most tech stuff so I catch on quick...I need help though!

Hmm, lemme try. At least you're sure until the root part.
AmonRA is a recovery... the phone has system/boot, recovery, and fastboot.
Try reading ... hxxp://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Dream:_Rooting
then shoot a question on which part u actually aren't sure and I'll try to help. CyanogenMod 6 is based on Froyo, so I guess that's the one you want.

I updated to froyo 2.2 (leaked version) on my samsung captivate, and I was wondering if there was a possible way to downgrade back to 2.1.
*The only reason im not liking froyo 2.2 at the moment i cant seem to learn our find out how to root it...
Wanted to root to rom a custom rom?
"noobie question"--> if i was to downgrade to 2.2 back to stock 2.1 and root it to have super user, i could then be able to install a custom rom? OR what would other people suggest doing?
Could someone point me in the right way with a link or two maybe, or some suggestions?
bummmpppp! this is all so new to me!
Here's a link to the SuperOneClick to root and enable non-market apps.
And here's a thread for new captivate users.
You might have an easier time finding answers in the Captivate forum.

Thanks so much for these thinks, I can use this SuperOneClick user on my Captivate with froyo 2.2 correct?
I like the froyo 2.2 just couldnt figure out how to get superuser, im trying to install a custom rom on it, never done it before just wanted to try one out and see! New to all this so probably have more questions haha !
Also another noobie question(s).
What does "flashing" mean?
lol
You have to be rooted to have superuser privileges.
Flashing a phone rom is like installing a new OS on a PC. Be careful on doing so and watch some videos and read up on it if you get brave to try flashing custom roms onto your device. Usually ppl use a windows app called Odin to do so. Make sure phone always charged 100% before flashing any new rom also. It could mess up battery stats otherwise and could risk brick if its almost dead then dies LOL. Assuming that's the context of flashing you meant.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
try bookmark this page 1st if anything wrong u can recover to original rom.

Flashing in simple terms means to install a new OS version/Updates/Themes etc on the phone. The most common method found here in XDA is to use something called as Clockwork Recovery Mod.
Seriously, go to this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364 you will know what you need to do to flash a custom ROM. And may I suggest Firefly 2.1 found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914284 as your first ROM. It is a good ROM. You will enjoy it. There are some other ROMs, if you ask which is the best, clearly there is none, it is purely on preference. Once you have flashed one ROM, and then a few, you will know which one you like.
1. installing a custom rom does not require a rooted phone, you can copy the update.zip to your sdcard and get into recovery, select the custom rom zip file and flash from there.
2. have you flashed a bios on a computer? flash a phone's rom is very similar to that.
my phone is rooted and running froyo with cognition 3.0.2. i bought it that way and i want to change to some different themes. i have a sd card in the phone and all the right stuff like cwm recovery and titanium back up. i have read all the stickys but i still cant figure out how to do this. i can get to the root of my sd card in windows all drivers are installed. i think im just missing a few steps and im there but i spent hours trying to figure it out and i failed lol. if somebody could please help me i would really appreciate it a lot. thanks in advance
Your gonna have to flash a compatible theme for Cognition. You can't just pick any theme. But here's one to get you started, instructions are on the page also: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=918057&highlight=cognition+theme
What themes are you trying? As long as it is compatible it us very easy
But please read and read the stickies about flashing or your gonna come back here asking how to unbrick your phone.

edit: i needed to update my rom manager to boot into cwm recovery and i am there now. something that easy didnt let me boot into cwm. now i am all good
I have a Telus Milestone that I just updated to Android 2.2 official and now I am looking to install Gingerbread on it.

Thanks.

Is CM7 better than the ShadowMOD ROM of Gingerbread?
I'm looking for something that is stable and speedy and without a lot of bugs.
Also, where do I begin?
I'm assuming that I have to root the phone first and then flash the ROM onto the phone?

Well, You have to use both to see which suits you better. I would flash CM7 now and wait for Edgar to release his next version which is expected by the end of the coming week.
You need not root your phone. You need to flash the vulnerable recovery to be able to run Androidiani OR. Once you flash CM7, your phone will be rooted automatically.

You can also try FroyoMOD, Ice&fire ( based on CM7 ) and HONO's mod ( based on CM7 )
Umm, pretty sure we cant use CM7, cause it changes the kernel or something
I just used Androidani Open Recovery or whatever its called to apply the CM7 and it temporarily bricked my phone, thankfully i did a nandroid backup and its rebooting as i type, whew

Just wondered if all of this is safe, or if it opens up your phone to security risks, such as when people jailbroke their iPhones and didn't change the root password.
thanks

thanks

As far as I know, there aren't any glaring security risks that have been discussed at all. Seeing as Gingerbread is really just based off of the 2.2.1/2.2.2 kernel, I don't see any risks associated.
Thanks for all of the help guys, but I have decided that it may just be too much for me.
I had an original iphone which I jailbroke and installed apps on, but that was years ago. Ever since then I hadn't really messed around with hacking my phone and now I am hesitant to start again, especially with a new os.

All of the tutorials in the development forums are fairly straightforward. Also, I have compiled a tutorial ZIP that I have given to a few people, if you want. I made about 40 steps from start to finish. It's up to you.
Really thought that Gingerbread would rekindle some interest in me for my Milestone, but I think I am gonna trade it away especially sine I have my Nexus One

Well I guess all the little baby steps included but basically,
1. Put AOR on sdcard with cm7.
2. Flash vulnerable recovery
3. Load AOR and flash cm7.
edit: 4. Add V6 SuperCharger as an upgrade option... lol

Why do you think my script is over 800 lines?
Actually, 847 at the moment... (reformatting to 40 columns and tweaking a bit)
That reminds me I gotta send you a PM
Come on.. nothing is too hard mate! If you can pass your school exams, these will be a piece of cake! Just that you need some spare time, and an internet connection for you to post back to XDA just in case it didn't work out very well.. now don't be scared, the chances are very unlikely if you read and follow all the instructions properly.
I'd be interested by that zip if you still got it!
As of now, I'm confused about the Telus Milestone on 2.2.1, are there issues to root it or not?
What version is your cm7? latest build I saw was 2.3.7 but I don't know if its telus-friendly...

Look in here a bit down the page you'll read, how to root and you will find MANY links there http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1487105 Decide for yourself, what s easiest for you. Either you flash back to froyo, root it easily and then flash an already rooted ROM. Or you flash one of the V20x files, which will probably delete all your data as well (didnt try it myself). Or you try this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1519674 BUT THIS IS EXPERIMENTAL... I guess nothing that will harm your phone, but i cant guarantee, if it works properly. Hope this helps a bit

Easy. Before those step you have to reboot in recovery. When you do that after boot CWM kicks in. For more information look at the ClockworkMod thread. A factory reset is a process deleting every stuff you installed, changed after you but don't forget to backup your apps.)
Flashing superuser.zip can be done in CWM. There is an option i believe it was "update from zip" select it. then select "from sdcard", locate the superuser.zip. press ok. After reboot you'll have root".
I may have forget or confused in steps" it's been a month since i've done it. Check out the thread the read the relevant things carefully before you proceed. But most importantly always remember to backup your apps. So that if you make a mistake you can install them back. ( i didn't mention nandrid backup , coss don't wanna confuse you more)
Latest version is V20. The letter changes form region to region, country to country. For Germany its V20n. Choose from here:

NP man. I try to help as much as i can. For CWM i recommend you to install ROM Manager. You can access it from that program. Also can make nandroid backup and everything. Anyway i don't know if you can install superuser after you complete the flashing process. If you wanna give it a try. Install ROM Manager. Go to recovery reboot. Try to install from CWM. Doubt it will work, so if it doesn't you have to go through the steps again unfortunately. Flash the ROM again. This time don't forget superuser.
I don't know about themes, sorry. I change icons, bootanimation manually and use GO Launcher EX for the looks. No standalone themes, no custom ROMs. That question should be for some other person to answer.
