[Q] CM7.0.3 Stable, Dalingrin Kernel emmc-042411EXT4 || Overclocking & Tablet Tweaks - Nook Color General

[Q] CM7.0.3 Stable, Dalingrin Kernel emmc-042411EXT4 || Overclocking & Tablet Tweaks
What I have:
CM7.0.3 Stable, Dalingrin Kernel emmc-042411EXT4
I need to:
- Be able to select 1100Mhz. I only see 1200Mhz and 1300Mhz, besides the other lower speeds. Am I using the right kernel for my CM built?
- I cannot use the performance options of Tablet Tweaks, as it says that my kernel is not supported. I cannot use the headphones fix or the 32bit to 16bit color depth either. Unsupported kernel. Why is that? Tried flashing the kernel twice with CWM 3.2.0.1 but still the same.
- Currently using SetCPU to min:300Mhz and max:1200Mhz, setting is "ondemand". The Nook gets warm on the back, so I am a little concerned. "ondemand" means that it will scale the CPU speed to different Mhz throughout the range? Why do I have a feeling that it pegs the CPU at the max setting?
- When the device goes to sleep with Wifi on, after I wake it up, let's say the next morning, the battery is down about 7%. Is the Wifi that kills the battery or the CPU? I need to try to turn Wifi off and see if it makes a difference.
Please don't suggest to change to nightlies or any other RC version. I prefer stable and I am almost sure that the older Dalingrin's kernel that I am using should work with what I have, along with Tablet Tweaks.
Thank you in advance for your time and effort. Love the forum. Cheers!
George

Sounds to me like you aren't trying to use "Tablet Tweaks" but "Nook Color Tweaks" and if that is the case then your build is too old and not supported.
From the Nook Color Tweaks thread:
* 2.6.29 releases are discontinued and no longer supported. They will remain hosted for those that might need them.
Click to collapse
* 2.6.32 CM7 builds currently do not work with the stable CM7 builds until CM7.1. You need to use CM nightlies until 7.1 is released.

Note: This app requires kernel support. For audio settings you will need a newer 2.6.32 kernel found in CM7 Nightly 88+ or my(Dalingrin) overclock kernel for B&N Froyo 1.2 and CM7.
For CPU settings you will need a 2.6.32 overclocked kernel from 06/09/11 or later.

You are correct! I mistyped the app name. I meant to write Nook Color Tweaks. I am aware of the Dalingrin's thread. But it does mention that although the stable releases are not supported, they are hosted. Is he referring to the older kernels?
In other words, I won't be able to use Nook Color Tweaks with my CM7.0.3 stable/Dalingrin Kernel emmc-042411EXT4, even if it is not the latest one from June?

The 4/24/11 is a .29 kernel which is no longer supported, to utilize the Nook Color tweaks app you need a .32 kernel which only works with nightly 88+ and the CM7.1RCs.
Basically if you want to use Nook Color tweaks you'll need to update your build....

Ok, that makes sense. This is what I thought, I just wanted to verify it. Thanks for that. Any ideas on the battery draining issue when in standby? Do you think it might be the wifi?

.29 Kernels don't support deep sleep if I recall. You have to update to .32
I recommend running 7.1 RC. I've been running it for a while now. I was running 7.0.2 for a while, but finally upgraded and glad I did.

+1 to this. I know you said in advance not to recommend the nightlies, but I would really suggest giving the latest one a try, if not at least the RC. There have been numerous fixes and updates, and for me at least, it has been super smooth with no issues. Battery life among other things is much improved. With slight to moderate usage I now can get a week or so easily off of a single charge. You should always be able to revert back to the RC or the last stable version if you want to for some reason.

Everyone, thank you so much for your replies. I took your advise and updated to 7.1 RC (from 7.0.3 stable) and it is a much better experience now. The tablet seems to be a bit faster, CPU scaling works better and more effective and the battery also appears to last longer. I have also installed the laste 6/30 Dalingrin kernel and now I can modify the CPU/sounds settings from the Nook Color Tweaks app. The only thing I cannot change is the color from 32bit to 16bit to improve FPS. I guess I need a more recent nightly for this. Not critical, so I will wait.
BTW, is there an app out there that will change the depth color from 32bit to 16bit?
Thanks a lot again!

If I am not mistaken 7.1 RC already comes with a newer OC kernel than 6/30, with that kernel you should be able to change the bit depth.

^^^ Ooppss, did I mess it up since I have installed Dalingrin's 06/30 kernel? I can use all the features in Nook Color Tweaks except from the depth color. Should I install the 7.1RC kernel, and if yes, do we know which version? (...doing some research as well on this...)

If you just reflash 7.1 RC that should do the trick, at the minimum I know the OC kernel included in the RC is newer than 6/30.

So, I reinstalled 7.1RC and apparently the kernel that it comes with is older than Dalingrin's 06/30. The 7.1RC kernel will only get the CPU up to 925Mzh and its full version is 2.6.32.9 ([email protected] #87). Dalingrin's 06/30 kernel is 2.6.32.9 ([email protected] #103), and after I've reinstalled it, it enabled all the CPU OC capabilities up to 1300Mhz. So, I assume it is newer.

I wanted to start a thread but this one hits my issue. If I install any RC or nightly(tried many from 88 till 146) I g3t sod and wifi issues. But I can't get 7.0.3 encore to work with the kernel that allows nook color tweaks to work(I know its unsupported, and it bootloops)
So I have yet to find anything after encore that doesn't sod and have wifi issues.. what would the recommendation be?

^^ Not sure what to tell you... I was running 7.0.3 with the April Darlingin kernels (tried both 404 and 424) and the Nook Tweaks app didn't work with it. I then installed CM 7.1RC1 and it is a much better experience, from CPU throttling, interface, speed and stability. I have the latest 630 EXT4 kernel from Darlingrin and the Nook Tweaks app works great, except from the color depth control which it says it requires a newer version of CM7. The CPU OC works a LOT better in this 7.1RC1 release, I have no wifi issues, no battery draining since deep sleep is supported and I am happy overall. The only issue is with the new Android Market not showing all the apps, updates etc, but there is a workaround.

The funny thing is, I don't have that issue with not seeing the apps in market since I went back to encore. I'd rather have that issue and not the sod or wifi issues and have proper volume so I wouldn't need headphones though.

[Q] What rom are you running and why?

What rom are you running and why not a different one? Forgot Honeycomb
Can a admin please add honeycomb to my poll?
Rooted stock eclair. It's doing everything I need it to do right now....no need to change just yet. Slingplayer and Youtube for me, angry birds and nook kids books for my son.
CM7 nightlies.
I have tried quite a few of the other Roms and appreciate all the work involved, but CM works better than anything else for me.
And by the time it hits stable.....yeah, a great piece of work.
Navigating with GPS and Google in my car on a big screen....
Streaming video (still choppy but getting BETTER)
Web browsing
And the occasional game, of course.
I am running Nookie Froyo because it is more stable for me than CM7 at the moment.
stock rooted eclair
tried phiremod but 3 hr battery life is a no go.
tried HC but didn't have market and haven't tried to add market to try again
stock kernel too. the OC ones make my nook very laggy
Running Nookie Froyo on eMMC using an older OC kernel (2.6.29-omap1 [email protected] #44). VERY stable, albeit without interactive govenor on the CPU, with stable wifi performance as well. Installed status bar mod that's available on the dev forum which adds shortcuts to the status bar.
I like Nookie Froyo because I'm able to get flash working on it. As of right now its the most useful to me of all the options until CM7's fully developed and HC beyond that.
I haven't tried CM7 on eMMC but have tried it on microSD and it's way too sensitive on the screen sensitivity for my taste. Makes typing a chore. Most likely the newer kernels have improved this though.
I can't say enough about Nookie Froyo. I have it installed to the EMMC with the latest status bar hack. It is really close to perfect for me. Honestly, I don't do a ton with my NC. Surf the 'net, Tweetdeck, Pulse and Gmail make up 99% of my use. I can do all of those without fault (though I do suffer sometimes launching WiFi after a reboot but from sleep - no problems). I also need to try the Ad-Hoc fix so I can tether to my rooted Droid 2 but it isn't a priority.
The work that has gone into this ROM has been astounding to me and it is so very close for primetime. Love it!
i use stock rom, but i would use nookie froyo but im scared im going to mess something else because i dont know how to burn the image to sd.
Running stock rooted, mostly because I like the status/navigation bar in the stock rom. I did try and install rom manager and recovery, and it stuck and boot to recovery all the time. Luckily I found a file to remove it, but I don't think I'll be flashing anything for a while.
The stock rom does most of what I need anyway, I don't much care for flash. I'm only hoping for honeycomb now.
CM7 because Honeycomb is not available.
Honeycomb, mostly for kicks, I have a phone for stability and honeycomb is sweet and meeting my needs
Im running stock 2.1 from my autonooter it does everything that i actually need like doc to go youtube and all my 16bit emulators run great also it impresses everyone i show it all my apps look great on it so ill just wait until they figure out froyo or gingerbread in autonooter format its th safest and easiest to install
Sent from my LogicPD Zoom2 using XDA App
CM7 nightlies and dalgrins OC kernels.
For me eclair was lame. I was tracking NookieFroyo but when I saw that its primary dev (cicadaman) was abandoning his creation to contribute to CM7, I moved to CM7. I took the plunge and blew away my eMMC and all is great! (I still use NF068 as a flasher when I want to dd something into the eMMC). CM7 is *almost* perfect at this point. BTW newbies, its almost impossible to brick your Nook. DD'ing stock back on to your eMMC is child's play.
I'm running Froyo because (in no particular order):
I broke gmail in rooted Eclair and had to restore to stock so I figured I might as well upgrade to Froyo while I'm at it
Changing LauncherPro shortcuts was painful in rooted Eclair
Froyo has better memory management than Eclair
A stable build of CM7 isn't out yet
A stable build of Honeycomb isn't out yet
CM7 nightly because I am using CM7 on Nexus One for nice features and up to date ROM.
I'm a newbie with the nook, I just got it a couple of days ago, but I have done a fair amount of experimenting. I have tried rooted stock, Nookie Froyo, Honeycomb, and CM7. So far, Nookie Froyo off of the eMMC works best for me. I want to use the Nook as part of job everyday (I'm in field sales), so it needs to be responsive and stable. I also like to watch videos a lot and need great video performance. I also use launcher pro and have my Nook set up to mirror the setup on my phone.
CM7 is a great user experience, but the choppy video is a deal breaker for me.
Honeycomb looks to be a great option in the near future when the source code becomes available and I'm looking forward to that.
rooted stock in emmc, cm7 on sd card.
Stock is stable, video works. The rooted keyboard is hoooorrible though, even worse than the default.
CM7 has a better keyboard, even without attaching my apple keyboard with bluetooth. After attaching it though...so much better, even as glitchy as it is.
So stock for consuming content, CM7 for producing it.
Probably switch to CM7 full time once the video kinks and the sleep kinks are worked out.
Stock on emmc and CM7 on sdcard....will like to update to the latest build though.....
eMMC: Rooted stock eclair, I still need the kid books feature.
uSD: CM7 nightlies. This is really good to try.

[Q] Live Wallpapers... yay or nay?

I've just downloaded a few but I'm not sure if having them running will have my 'OnDemand' option always running my CPU @ 1100MHz. I already know the wallpapers themselves will obviously impact the battery life so any input on if you guys use them and your experiences. They all seem to run quite smooth on CM7 7.0.2 via SD with OC kernel...

[Q] No full color in CM7 Nook Color?

Hello-
I have the new Nook Color and I installed CM7. I see that the icons do not have smooth coloring. Instead they are grainy. And so is the screen when I open a picture to view. I never had this problem with my older version of the nook color. Has something changed or is it the version of CM7 that is the problem? I am using #100 nightly on the new one. Old one is 2.6.32 Beta 3.
Is there a setting I should tweak to increase the color depth?
Thanks in advance
The OC kernel back around 4/23 I believe, changed color depth to 16bit from 32bit. There is nothing you can do as far as adjusting it, the only thing that can be done is just to use the stock kernel.
Did you mean the kernel from 5/23 ? So you are saying that dalingrin's initial releases for 2.6.32 beat 1, 2, 3, and 3.1 are full color but after that there is no full color version available?
I think something is wrong with your NC or such, you CAN NOT tell the difference between the bit reduced kernel changes. Multiple people have tried, only one or two claim to see a difference.
I'm a photographer and I QUICKLY see banding or color problems and I did various comparisons between the kernels which had the bit depth reduced and not and I did not see a difference. IMO that basically means it's not being driven to its full potential perhaps, but either way the reduced bit depth makes no difference.
You have a special problem.
It looks that way Khaytsus. I will try going back to stock and try the CM7 again.
Do you think there is a device driver problem? Is there such thing in Android? Would I be able to copy the drivers from my old nook to the new nook and fix this ?

Franco Kernel: Manager & Updater demo
Disclaimer to moderators:
Slight OT is fine, but when users decide to act stupid they should be dealt with with the appropriate means - its really annoying for me when OT turns crazy. Please put the warning/ban hammer anytime any of you think there's lack of respect and/or too much unwanted OT crap - but if it doesn't meet this criteria let the OT posts alone. Thank you.
Cheers!
Good to see you around here!
Thought I would add more to this and make it useful for a few users.
The reason behind why Mpdecision is disabled by default is due to the fact that it is highly inefficient in the sense that hotplugging on Linux, put simply, sucks. Why? The hotplug acts as a front-end to the scheduler to provide a means of plugging and unplugging cores in exchange for a high amount of latency. This means that even though a core may be plugged, there is a delay of several milliseconds before this is actually processed causing microstutters that are hard to notice, but do disrupt performance. The same can be said for the thermal driver and how it Aries frequencies.
Now that that is over with, I'd just like to thank Franco. My device has never been faster. Even with an undercooked, it is still performing better than ever. Especially love the ZRAM tweaks, and how you properly configured CPU boost. Some people make it way too aggressive... It's the little things, and the huge steps forward in the source code that make your work so great! Best of luck
My apps have been updated to support the One Plus X too, both free and paid apps.
Damn legendery dev with his awesome kernel is here. Thank you!
Wish you're kernel for CM13/14 [emoji1]
Flash it, all fine, better later than never,
Didn't work for me coming from LOS (17/03/02 build) with Boeffla kernel. Wiped cache and dalvik, flashed fk r1 and bootloop. Phone kept returning to the boot splash screen and then straight to recovery. Looking forward to solving. Thanks for now.
Sorry, I was clearly not fully awake when I posted this. I read OxygenOS and interpreted as LineageOS.
Still, I hope someday we can run FK kernel on LOS.
Thanks anyways.
Omg .....Dream come true....Thank you franco
Thanks for the kernel, Franco!
It's a shame that it only supports OOS.
FYI I installed it on Sultan's CM13 and everything works fine except dt2w. The switch in settings does nothing and there is no switch in Kernel Adiutor. I hope that your kernel will be compatible with CM/AOSP based roms in the future.
Edit: Wifi is also not working.

It's not slow with FK, at all. I made sure of that. There was a specially bad issue that I reported to OP 1 year ago, which makes the device have a gigantic stack of uninterruptible threads after a while on screen off. My record was a load average close to 200, 200, 200 which is insane and destroyed the device's performance. That's fixed on FK. Also all cores are online at all times, there's no need to shut down 2 cores, and mpdecision is disabled so that it doesn't mess with the devices performance.
thanks finally the great franco kernel is here damn really appreciate your work
Something really worth for the OnePlus X after a long time. I have been waiting for this day. Thank you.

Hi, I flashed your kernal yesterday, all great and the device is buttery smooth but just one thing I noted. When ever the phone goes into to deep sleep the device doesn't wake up on pressing the power button. Have to restart the phone by long pressing the power button. And I haven't changed anything using the kernal adiutor app, just using your default settings.
Can you kindly guide me if something is wrong from my side. May be if you want a log I'll try to pull out a log tonight.
Thanks alot for your work.

Updated 7/31/2021 rebased on Acuicultor's v2.2.5 rebase (OOS) and rebase_custom (custom ROMs).
[NOTE: Bug reported - with a Magisk Module I created to fix it. For some strange reason (code looks fine), some systems are setting the default GPU frequency to 920mhz and default power level to 0 (max). I have posted a small Magisk Module that waits 5 seconds then corrects these values (295mhz default and power level 8). It's on the GitHub release page - MOD-GPU-Set-Min-Freq.zip. Just install with Magisk Manager as a module / install from storage after downloading.]
This is a tweaked version of RadioActive kernel by acuicultor modded for higher performance and lower idle drain. All source commits and releases are on my GitHub fork:
https://github.com/mrslezak/Radioactive_kernel_oneplus8/releases/tag/v2.2.5-MOD
PLEASE read the Readme as well as the disclaimer. Whenever you flash a custom kernel, you do so at your own risk. I recently rebased on the dev's work (GPU_OC OOS branch, never released) and set the wakelock blocks up myself (lower idle drain, tested over a week with no loss in functionality), dropped the base GPU frequency to 295mhz and raised the top ones (800/920mhz) acuicultor you're an awesome dev, great to have you around! All credits should go to him other than my tweaks.
I also merged all the same changes into the Custom ROM branch which didn't have GPUOC or AdrenoBoost - several people are using it now but it's marked as a BETA since I am on OOS (latest Global) and can't test it myself. NOTE: many people on the TG channel I posted to have tried it and have had no issues on Op8, Op8 Pro, and Op8T.
Note if you are one of the rare people who see artifacts in games or benches, the easiest fix is to go into your kernel manager and set the max GPU frequency to 800mhz and apply on boot. Not all 865 Adreno GPUs are created equal. I haven't seen one that couldn't handle 900mhz to date, but enough people have had no issues at 920mhz so that's where I put it.
Be sure to flash Magisk before installing, then use EX Kernel Manager or FK Kernel Manager to Flash the kernel zip. It has all the same optimizations of RadioActive kernel, just modded for really nice performance and low battery drain. Adreno Boost is set to low on default which makes it react faster as the GPU scales. If you already have Magisk installed, there is no reason to reinstall it - the AnyKernel 3 zip installer will use what's installed already.
I put one out there you can just flash from: fastboot flash boot 4.19.110.RadioActive-WL-295_UC-920-GPU-2.2.5.img (OOS only) as it saved my a$$ a couple times when flashing or trying to apply an incremental update when rooted (no success, although I posted the incremental update on TG, the payload just won't extract properly to update using fastbootd scripts)... Maybe I'll post it here on XDA and see if anyone can extract the latest Op8T update.
Also someone sent me a PM about using KonaBess app to change frequencies even more, or change regulators, or change the DDR clock speeds. Yes, it works. Note you probably should only play with that if you have a fastboot image available in case it doesn't boot! I did just upload one for OOS to the repo as I mentioned above. Be warned, you're on your own there.
Hope you all enjoy!

Join the Telegram group called OnePlus 8 | 8T Series and you'll find that and my modded versions there as well. Just search for 920 the latest one will pop right up. Actually about to rebase on the dev's excellent work and set the wakelock blocks up myself, dropping the base frequency and raising the top one. acuicultor you're an awesome dev, great to have you aboard! - MattOfTheDead / Red Magic 5G MOD kernel (Q) / Xiaomi Mi9 / Mi9T Pro MOD kernels (Pie/Q) / next in line is probably a Realme GT.

I built both just moved some commits over from the GPU_OC branch and added my own to custom. I have no way to test it but several others did already. All I've heard is great feedback and running faster than OOS. Of course it depends on the ROM.

I just built the OOS one... custom I don't think there's a GPU_OC branch to rebase on. I deleted my other repo with changes and just switched to the dev's work since it was nicely done. I'm always running OOS I don't really care to run a custom ROM. Although I imagine it would be pretty easy to add his commits from the OC branch to the custom one, you never know what issues you'll encounter when doing so... And I don't really feel like building a kernel I won't use. I already converted it over from a carrier locked phone. Happy enough it runs on Global OOS ROM. I've run a few custom ROMs before like Lineage, Evolution-X, I always end up back on OOS. Just like having a fast phone with no lag where I can open any number of apps and get work done quickly without waiting for anything to load.

You can also underclock.

RadioActive-WL-295-920GPU-custom-2.1.4-BETA.zip is the file for custom ROMs BTW if you don't read the notes (which you should). As I mentioned to the unhappy user you can always drop the max GPU in any kernel manager to 800mhz and set on boot if you got an inferior 865 although artifacts have only been reported by 1 person period. A more productive approach rather than bad mouthing someone trying to provide a free service is "can you build a version that maxes out at 900mhz?"... Respect please in the forums.

Well I put up custom and OOS just use a kernel manager to set the high frequency you want it to stop at on boot. But before you do, here's a day of basically using the phone a lot at 120hz with many apps open. Note someone here didn't look at the SOT DRAIN which is 100/8.27 = 12hrs SOT. I didn't start it with a full battery. I do that on purpose start at 60% or so to see how it drains in the middle of the discharge. So I'd advise those that are quick to criticize, make sure you actually calculate something before saying it's "horrible" when it's as good as stock.

That's horrible, considering auto gives me 9-12 hours screen on time, depending on what I am doing obviously

You do realize that this is 12 SOT if you never let it sleep and use it all the time, look at the stats and do some math. 100%/8.27% = 12hrs SOT. Idle went up because I was on phone calls for an hour, and the screen turns off. It's usually 0.6%/hr if you're using it (on WiFi), 1%/hr on cell, turning it on and off every few minutes will cause more drain. I was using my phone a lot today that way. I would say that's amazing to get the same SOT on a modded kernel. I haven't optimized a thing in the ROM or notifications, just used the kernel. I don't care if you use it, do as you wish.
The best way to get help, or to find me is on the TG group. There are people there that can help you out if need be.

Anyway I'm tired of people requesting things and then getting completely incorrect information and yelling at me because they either can't do math or they don't know how to use a kernel manager. I can be reached on the TG group but you all are on your own now. All I hear are complaints for doing free work for people I don't even know, some of you need to learn some manners.

Ignore the haters and complainers...
I just flashed (RadioActive-WL-295-920GPU-custom-2.1.4-BETA.zip) over CR_Droid (CR 03/08 and 03/26 builds 8Pro) and it made a HUGE difference in smoothness, snappiness and performance. I don't worry too much about battery drain as we can top off our phones in less than 20 minutes a day. The under-clocking is also wonderful. I remember back in the G2 days we not only underclock, but would under-volt ALL the frequencies just a few ticks away from unstable for more battery life (dependent on the cpu bin ver), but not really that necessary anymore with larger batteries and super quick charges.
Much respect and appreciation and hope to see more tweaks and builds in the future

Thanks bud, glad to hear good results with the kernel. On TG everyone has been full of compliments. Let's hope it stays that way here as well. We can conduct everything in a respectable manner.
Now if you REALLY want to save battery and your cell provider supports Voice over WiFi, Google Messages enable enhanced chat features and keep it on WiFi only (i.e. Bluetooth only on while you're using it, Location off unless you're navigating somewhere, NFC off unless you're using GPay, mobile data off), here's what I get being on my phone all day today (started under 60% battery) at 120hz: 7% active drain, 0.84% inactive. If you're asleep it's more like 0.4%. You won't miss any calls or texts either.
great, zero! drain during the bedtime that's awsome! thanks for the kernel upgrade
