[Q] Nook owners in Canada ? - Nook Color General

Am sure there are many happy Nook Colour owners who live north of the 49th Parallel. I am about to have my cousin (who lives in the States) order a refurb Nook Colour, have it shipped to a Receiving centre in Lewiston (NY), and my brother will pick it up. Sounds like a lot of work, but yes, that is what I have to resort to since Buy.com wouldn't take my Canadian registered PayPal account, and Cdn Credit card.
My questions are:
- Would I be able able to register my Nook with B&N when I first started it up ?
- What do you do if you want to register at B&N website (to purchase books) w/o a US Credit card ?
Can fellow Canucks share their ownership experiences ?
Thanks, eh!

I'm canadian but initially installed honeycomb and now cm7 n150 firmware - never even booted into stock...
bought mine on ebay 200 sale and think its my best purchase of the year...

@vn33,
I've been able to register an account and purchase an ebook from B&N.
It appeared in my nook color once I registered it to my account.
I registered first through B&N.
I used a real e-mail address and my credit card number (visa).
For primary shipping address, I used the address of the closest B&N store to me.
I selected the closest US city (Niagara Falls) and plugged that into the B&N store locator.
Even though the address didn't match my Visa I was able to purchase an ebook and the charge appeared on my statement so I don't believe they check.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info above, nolook & bmss ...
Are you running stock or CM7 ?
If you do run CM7, did are you running the Nook App from Market ?
Did you managed to purchase magazine ?
Thanks again !

@vn33,
I'm running stock off internal memory.
I haven't bought any magazines.
I've tried the dual boot phiremod/honeycomb rom off of microsd but getting a lot of force closes with all my existing cards. I really like phiremod 6.3 though.
I'm still having trouble finding a good microsd with random 4k write speeds.
The nook app can't be found in my version of the market. I think it has to do with a Canadian IP address. This hasn't prevented me from downloading books with the stock rom. I haven't tried any tweaks to install the .apk that I found on the web or tried unlocking the market yet. Not until I have a microsd that can run phiremod with stability.

I think BN wouldn't sell the hardware in Canada, but if you get your hand on one, then once registered the device with a google a/c (you could put in the credit # during the device registration, or after you registered, then use a regular PC browser to add the # online), and you are good to go. After all, BN cares only your credit card, not where are you from. There could be some copyright issue for them, but I am sure they just close their eyes.
As other posters mentioned, the NC is a very good device, I also bought from refurbished on ebay for $250 (shipping inclusive) and you don't pay the GST and PST.

I'm not running the nook app on my cm7 nook...
I'm tempted to get the cheap hp tablet though it has the same resolution as the nook...

I would not buy the HP (even if it is only $99) unless there are mod that could convert it into an Android. Since HP is going to abandone it, there will be no support or anyone writing app for it (it is based on an obscure WebOS), so the only use you have is web browsing.

Went down to Virginia in July and our first stop was the first B&N along our route near Erie, PA. I bought it from the store and rooted it that evening at the hotel. (Already had everything ready to go). I noticed a dead pixel in the middle of the screen and had to unroot it and brought it to the next B&N store along our route and exchanged it for one that was perfect.
I ended up getting the Nook app on my Nook (ironic) and set it up using a gmail account and everything was good.

Mine has worked perfectly since I got it last december. Living in Vancouver, Canada. Never used the B&N service though, so not sure how that works.
Registration and everything for the first time setup was a breeze though.

I am interested in the new Nook Tablet, but I believe it won't ship to Canada either. How did you guys buy your Nook (apart from going to the US?). Have you ever tried a service like MYUS? How can I get a Nook Tablet for relatively the same price as it is sold in the US?

Unless you're willing to cross the border and pick it up or have an Amerifriend willing to ship it to you, you will have to pay a premium to get it in Canada.
shopereaders dot com is one option although I have never used their services. myus dot com is another option.
Personally, I wouldn't bother with it if you have to pay a premium. I like my Nook Color but not enough to pay the "Canada surcharge". There are other options available in Canada like the Kobo Vox, which has almost identical specs but is affordable and available locally. That's an important consideration in case you have to return it or get warranty service.

[Q] Nook magazine subscription in Europe?

Hello, I have decided to purchase a Nook Color this Christmas. I live in Romania and a friend from the States will be sending me one. I have a quick question, is there a way to buy subscriptions to magazines from B&N store from foreign countries? I understand that B&N sell only in the U.S. so I am intrested in somekind of a work-around. Hope anybody can help, thanks
Anyone can help?
I think only solution is to use VPNs which has US IPs. Try hotspot shield - it works great on PC (I haven't found android version yet). Or you can try tethering using PC and adhoc wifi.
Thx for the reply, but how about the credit card, won't B&N check it is from Europe?
I think not, I've got VISA USD card issued by polish bank, which is only for online payment and I don't have problems with buying online anywhere in the world (including barnes&nobles web store where i've bought my nook).
Buy the book using the proxy/vpn with a US IP. The download does not care which country you are in, just the initial purchase.
Thx for the help everyone, The nook will arrive in a few days, if there are no problems at the customs, and will test with the proxy/vpn.

I bought the nook also from B&N with a Romanian credit card, they don't care about the nook selling to Europe, problem is with books or magazine subscriptions, because they have to obey copyrights and can't sell them outside the U.S. This is what I read on the B&N forums, they also said they check credit cards when you purchase books but not for the nook. Thx for the help anyway, I will try with the proxy/vpn change, and maybe I am lucky

[Q] Rooting from Canada?

I live in Vancouver and intend to go to Bellingham tomorrow to buy Nook Color (since B&N does not ship to Canada). I've checked the threads about rooting this device, but still don't understand fully the process. I think I understand I need a B&N account for this. However, in order to create an account, I need a US billing address for my credit card, which is obviously a Canadian address. What are my options? Since there is Amazon, and Kobo in Canada, I am planning to install their respective readers and use these two sources instead of B&N. Is this realistic?
Any pointers much appreciated.
When I first set mine up, it let me skip past the credit card entry. It never insisted on a credit card until I went to actually order a book from B&N.
I rooted from Poland and B&N shop doesn't work here, I think you can register from anywhere, to buy anything you'd need US credit card/ address.

Fellow canuck. Ibentered my Canadian credit card and used a relatives address in USA. It worked so caN also make purchases from b&n store.
I got a friend of mine to buy my NC in Maui for me. I signed up for a B&N account and entered an address to a parcel service just across the border. I use this address for other stuff as well like my US Netflix (streaming only) account. Maybe check if there is aservice like that near you. As long as you don't get stuff shipped there, there shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks very much to all who replied. Tomorrow night I hope to start rooting my new nook
Sitting in my office in Vancouver watching Sons of Anarchy on my rooted Nook right now. (Slow day ) I too just skipped the credit card part and everything went just fine.
The root is really, really easy. I was a bit intimidated too, but even before all the automation that's out now it was a cakewalk if you can read and follow directions.
Successfully rooted my Nook. At the moment listening to "Sultans of Swing" on youtube. I remembered my first Linux installation in April 1995 and the last line in the manual (the distro was "Mini Linux): Et in Arcadia ego.
Thanks to all who made it happen.

OK, this was posted by an "Administrator" (whatever that means) on the Official barnes and Noble Nook Color forums:
"Hi all- If you’d like to get a sneak peek of some of the upcoming NOOK Apps, check out HSN this weekend to see them demonstrated. Then stay tuned! Everyone will receive the update as soon as it is ready this Spring."

Aside from a stock 2.2, what i really hope for is a new kernel, that Dal and other devs can use to make CM7 and HC (when its out) even better...
Browsing is much faster on 2.2 as well. Good news!
If the B&N Forum administrator can be trusted, I suspect that what we'll see is a web browser running embedded Flash videos and some cook-books with embedded video demonstrations. Wouldn't surprise me to see Angry Birds or some such, also, when they talk about "all the other things the Nook Color can do."
I will say that it kinda rubs me the wrond way to see the Nook Color on HSN. I associate that show with overpriced Packard Bell's (and lets face it: Packard Bell were overpriced at any price) and $15.00, 10 Carat "genuine faux diamons."

does the fact they are selling the NC for 299 have anything to do with that?

Sorry, I'm new here, but Home Shopping has the nerve to charge $300, $50 more than every other store, for the Nook Color, and that $50 buys you a lousy 2 GB SD card with a bunch of free Gutenburg Project books??
I mean, I knew they have no shame, but.... WOW.
That might be the most expensive 2 GB SD card EVER.
I wonder if google apps will be available. I'd really have no need for rooting if only the basic applications were available through their market.

Well it says Email App... even iphone has Google apps, despite Jobs' feud with Google, so it seems likely that BN would also have google apps.
BTW, as some have mentioned, HSN will use the "$299" price as a starting point for saying "but only if you call now, you get it for" in order to make their actual price seem more like a deal.

Sadly, that isn't the case. The only devices that are shipping with GApps, are those that have a cellular radio (aka the phones, and some tablets). Non licensed devices (like ours, and others) do not ship with it (though it doesn't stop us from putting them on.

That doesn't stop B&N from licensing it for the 2.2 Update.
I'm wondering what it's going to do for those running rooted stock? For once I don't want to be in the first batch to upgrade.

No, it's not. Bought a 2GB MicroSD when they first came out, and it ran a cool $180 (plus sales tax!) at the time, as they were exclusive through SanDisk to one cellphone carrier for a good few months (Verizon IIRC). Curse of the early adopter, saw them drop to sub-$100 just half a year later or so.

Yes, that's my point! They're a bunch of old classic literature that is all available for free via Project Gutenburg (33,000 titles and counting) and other venues.
If there's a single title there that you'd actually have to pay for, please let me know; I haven't checked all of them.
This is a rip-off. But it's a tangent; the point of the thread was about the B&N update. (See also the recent bad news about Honeycomb being withheld.)

I'm with you , if this provides a new kernel that can be integrated in CM7 and HC great, otherwise I honestly don't care at all Not hating on anyone on stock, I rocked it for awhile, just saying once I flashed cm7 I didn't look back...and I wouldn't be surprised if that's going to be the road for most nook rooters (not necc. cm7, but also HC, phiremod, etc...)
by stock I mean stock-rooted...I was on stock for about the time it took me to charge the device
Looks like B&N has finally had their own press release for this (and not the Facebook one either)....

where are the deals now?

Hi guys. Missed the Barnes and Nobel deal so now I am looking around for the best deals, so I thought I would stop here and ask. I need one for my daughter for Christmas. Either a color nook or nook tablet. Looking to root it as well through the sd card because I want to keep the stock B&N software for my daughter to buy and read books. Any input is welcome as to where I can get either one for a great deal and which one to get. Thanks!
I bought 2 refurbished for the kids for $119 each from here last week. It changed to $129 now. I don't know if the price fluctuates or not.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOOK-Color-...719205?pt=US_Tablets&hash=item45feb06fa5#rwid
It appears to be B&N's own ebay site.
Item location: B&N Warehouse, United States
I can't be sure what the warranty is but it should be 1 year like the one from their site.
Yes, that auction ended, then went from $129 to $149 and that ended and I cant find another auction listed under the Barnes and Nobel store anymore.......
For the price comparison between the two, I am wondering if I would be better to go with the tablet? I am sure that it will be rooted very soon! looking for input!

Locked boot loader makes it basicly SOL for custom roms.
Sent from my NookColor using Tapatalk
B&N's own site still has the $149 refurb deal here. Not as good as $119, but at least its still available
So what would you guys get? If they get past the bootloader problem, which I am sure they will, the only other advantage to the tablet besides the speed is the built in "mic" which later on could be used to talk while using the keyboard similar to the way a cell phone works? Just trying to weigh my options!
Honestly, I would go ahead and get the nook color (not tablet). And think about putting a rom on the emmc (internal drive). That way she can read books from Barnes and Noble on the nook app, as well as books on the kindle app, Sony reader app and Google books. I also check out books from my local library.
I guess you can also do this running the rom from the SD card, but having done it both ways myself, I would go for putting the rom on the nook itself. Rom runs much better.
Apps are much cheaper from the Google market than from the B&N market.
I don't know how much function a mic will give, but I text from my nook using Google voice.
Check out Craigslist as another option. My sister just got a great deal on a nook with leather cover that was barely touched. Still had the box, etc.

$150 now
While this ain't exactly Nook Color related, if you aim for a cheap tablet and don't care about the 1024x600 Resolution the Nooks have...
Go for a Aino Novo 7, it's 100$ and overall might be the better choice for your daughter as it packs a whole bunch more than the Nook.
Its biggest downside being tough to find protective covers and the 800x480 resolution.

[?] Ebay is full of Nook HD+

Hey there,
I'd like to buy a Nook HD+ and I'm wondering because currently ebay (in the uk) is full of seller who are actually selling (buy it now) couple of tablets for 150GBP which is ~60GBP less than the original market price. Are there any known problems or maybe B stock?
Thanks for your help
Its because most people don't know about third party roms or sites like this, and the stock operating system is very restricted so most people don't like it.
Also it seems quite common that a lot of people seem to give these as presents but most people don't want them so they sell them.
Thanks for your response! Sounds like a logical reason for the private sellers but there seem to be lots of professional ones who are selling couple of tablets for these cheap prices

Thank you very much! So CM10 is running completely stable now?
I believe it's because University Students within the UK can get the tablets for free, via their bursaries. The bursary cannot be transferred into cash, and can be used to purchase books, or an eBook reader (yep, you guessed it - a Nook HD or HD+). I purchased a Nook HD+ using my bursary, and have gifted it to my dad, after Rooting and GAPPS.
I purchased it for £270, but on eBay they sell for cheap for the reasons listed above. But selling it that cheap is the only way these University students can convert their bursary into actual cash. I'm a university student myself, and it happens all the time. But I don't buy and sell these, I'm actually trying to save my bursary. I've only purchased on Nook HD+ for my dad, and that's it.
That could be one reason. You may find that a lot of the tablets are located around Manchester, Greater Manchester and/or Lancashire. If so, then I'm pretty sure I know which uni. If not, then it may be from another university, or nothing related to university - just a genuine seller.
Thats interesting, I've noticed lots seem to appear from Manchester. Are they uni's doing something different from others ?
Just to chip in, I got my Nook HD 8Gb (not HD+) for a bargain price of £80 buy it now on eBay. A full 50% discount on RRP over here. Seller didn't say why he was selling, nor why his BIN price was so low. I would guess that like others have said, B&N just isn't a properly recognised bookseller over here, and sellers might guess that buyers will be put off by a non-Amazon device.
Received my device on Tuesday afternoon, by the evening I was running CM 10.1, thanks to all the good work by bokbokan. People are missing out because these devices make cracking tablets as well as ereaders.

Thank you very much for your comment. That sounds like a very logical reason! Actually I'm a student in the UK as well but unfortunately only as an exchange studend for 2 terms.
