I saw a few root guides for sale on eBay. So, was wondering, is it a good idea? Is it legal?
What do you think devs? If I sell them, am I abusing your work?
Oh wow ... another Sri Lankan ... cool (I am one as well). I don't know about legality as the instructions on how to root phones are pretty much in the public domain. Then again it could be illegal if they are selling instructions/procedures/techniques which were developed by the developers on our fine and industrious forum.
My advice to you personally if you are thinking of selling a manual of sorts on rooting a certain phone, make sure you get permission from those who's work you will be referencing as well as make a sweet royalties deal with them so they can profit as well. But then again if you have come up with your own way of rooting that has not been mentioned here or anywhere, then you have all the right to publish your work and reap the rewards.
That's my 2 cents at least.

Well, thanks for the answer.
There is nothing illegal in selling public domain software. GNU allows you to resell stuff as long as you provide a link to source. I'm wondering about the legality of helping people root the phone and helping them remove restraints placed by the carrier. Like for example portable hotspot. As for the devs, I'm wondering about the morality of doing this.
And, yes I'm a Sri Lankan living in Sri Lanka. =)
I think it's legal. I'm seeing a lot of cellphone shops that does these things.

Depends on what you are doing. From what I understand, GPL licences can't be used commercially. Since XDA falls under GPL licensing...
On the other hand, if you came up with the guide and resources on your own entirely, you may have a claim on the content.
As for rooting guides, I suppose that if you have printed it out and have organized the guide well, it could be worth something. But the resources contained within must be from your own making (ie, the ROMs, the root method, etc.)
So, I don't think that rooting guides should be paid for.
On the other hand, you may charge someone for rooting services.

Well, the GPL allows you to monetize as long as you make the buyer aware that it comes with GPL.
I'd like to perform rooting services but it would be a bit hard to find people in my locality.
Thank you everyone for the answers.

If you haven't heard all ready Verizon is tracking down root users and limiting there data or fully suspending it so watch out. But we have to fight back against them by hiding Verizon from seeing that we are proudly rooted and some people have said the would sue Verizon. Please do whatever you can to fight against this.
Also motorola and htc are going to start doing the same.
How are they "supposedly" tracking down root users?
Why would they have any desire to do that?

because they want people to pay for there 3g hotspot instead of people using wifi tether and if they catch people I think they earn money somehow. I am trying to research into that.
In order for them to do this it would take too much time and money. They would use more money trying to catch rooters than they would save by catching rooters. It's simply not going to happen. If they're going to make "software" to do this, how would it work? What software could they possibly send out to find out if someone is rooted? Yes Android is trying to make their software a little less "open," however, no one is trying to "track down root users." It would be too complicated and would violate their own "open source" policies. If this is even remotely true, what is your reference for posting this? What is your source?

Well if you're talking about this post:
http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/content/974-google-s-android-unopen-source-project.html
It says nothing about "tracking down root users" or anything about tethering.
Would be nice if you could post the url to the article. Your post is misleading, I'm not sure if it's because information is missing from your post, or because this is just your opinion and you're wrongly stating it as fact. At any rate, I've read the above post and it says nothing about using software to track down root users (which is ridiculous) or anything about making people pay to tether. Having free tether apps and paid tether apps on Android is a very big selling point for them which constantly gives them better sales figures than evil Apple.

Rooting violates warranty in any and every phone...

Yea, I was going to say the same thing. You can't void you warranty if you cant root your device.....YET..
Here's a silly question, is someone currently working on a root or is all hope given up? Just asking.
Most people working on WP have tended to stay rather quiet until there was something concrete to anounce. But given that they deemed most of the original Lumias unhackable unless they came from the factory with an unlocked Bootloader (as some did due to an error in manufacturing) it is entirely possible they are not working on trying to break Secure Boot.
But in the end: we simply don't know.
No.
No one is working on anything. Fact is, no one is interested.
You pick your poison, work on Lumia or work on a HTC device, but fact is there aren't enough modders/developers with devices to support any effort if there is any to begin with. Each device would require a different method , and the fact this secure boot is so different only adds to the dilemma.

Fact matter is there is now begin to have a interest in WP. But you still look at there user base normal every day people I class WP like iphone yea they jailed break the phone but still most of the users would not have a clue to do that. Unlike android where it is open source and you have developer coming from every direction so it's easy to creak device after another. the post directly below the screen shot on their facebook says htc one jtag and communicating. That's not hacking.
If I remember right, I used them to repair a bricked HD2. It required being taken apart and the ROM flashed directly to the board. I think that was 40 bucks.
When I got it back the volume down stopped working. They claimed it was messed up when I sent it, which is partly true but it still functioned. When I got it back it didn't at all. They stopped responding to my questions and requests.
They got it working again but were a bit rude.. won't be using them again.

I don't understand why people are so heated about this, they're independent people who get to make their own choices. Android and open source in general have great traditions of devs doing their work for free, but that hardly means that every dev owes it to the community to work pro bono.
If you haven't donated to a dev on your own, you really shouldn't be offended about this.

If you want to understand why people are mad, you need to understand the culture a little better. Go read the GPL (and maybe other related open source licences). I'm not saying that it applies to this; just that open source is no where near as open as most people believe it to be.

Not necessarily, you don't make money if people aren't willing to pay. I can only assume that most people on forums like this are less likely to send there phone out to be s-offed,and just wait until one of these amazing devs posts a tutorial(once accomplished). If you mean they would make more money if they don't, by they are hoping people will brick there devices trying, then yes i agree then they would make a lot of money off of that. I do believe Share is Caring...unless its a completely original idea then charge.

Hello dear XDA-Community,
The idea of this thread was to serve as an un bricking thread eventually,
I am looking into a riffbox for jtag service, I am approaching xda to see if any users would be interested in helping me cover the cost of said riffbox
if you were to donate towards the cause in return you would receive free unbrick service and jtag service for all your devices as long as the riffbox supports the CPU architecture
If this is of no interested not a big deal i just thought i would give the community a chance to get involved rather than keeping all the cool toys at my house and not sharing
This thread will be the hub for service requests. If you happen to need unbrick service, you will find this thread and us to help you.
I will post a log of all payments made from that money plus all Items received (e.g. the RIFF Box, the cables, Jigs, etc.)
I will also keep an online "work and ticket tracker" so that you can see live reports /pictures of the status of your repairs
now your like ok i didnt donate to help you buy this thingamabobber now i bricked my phone and i dont wanna pay some dude on ebay 60$ to fix it
cool find me post in the thread if your device is supported we can get it unbricked
Please remember i am one man and do have a child so im not planning to support 43000000x users but i dont think it would be bad to offer service to RC's RD's and senior members of xda for no cost of labor just get the unit here and ill jtag it up
RIFF Box - US $155.00 + Shipping
JIG Connector - negligible i have a variable temp soldering station so i could solder to the board direct at low heat
Updates / Facts / News:
Some things you might see around the thread
Hope this is gonna be very very educational for people too. Unbricking always is some sort of a mystery for many and if you send off your phone to some stranger on ebay, you usually don't get an idea about the "Hands On" and gettin' dirty bit of tearing down a phone and actually make it look nice and work properly again afterwards.
So, maybe we will even have some photos or videos and stuff and just give you an idea of how that all works...
Please ask your questions
and if your located in the USA and close to me for XDA active members I will always do what I can to help out as XDA has always helped me out
I am not trying to sell jtag service at all guys im saying if we can get me a riffbox ill give xda senior members RD's RC's RT's mods and members with over a 300 post count free jtag service

How would a single riff box provide all of us with s-off? JTAG is a great skill to have but if there is only one riff box its not going to benefit the rest of the community for s-off. We need a s-off solution that wont require all of us to buy special hardware to achieve it.

I did read your op. And the title says s-off and unbricking project.
so if this for just unbricking or both?
My point is its a little misleading. JTAG is awesome for unbricking but if this is going to be an s-off project also the average user should understand the risks of JTAG for s-off. Like it requires the phone to be taken completely apart and then flashed. And hopefully put back together correctly.
I changed the digitizer on my og evo and swore i'd never try it again. I'm not knocking what your trying to accomplish I just think the rest of the community should be aware of what jtag entails.

The app is working well, but the bad news is, Samsung took it down of github. Not sure how this will move on, i really liked this solution.
Just Sammy feeling threatened by their own guns.
@PlutoDelic
It's not just a matter of being threatened; ELM/KLM Keys cost money.
Depending on your organization and use (Corporate Vs. Education/Development Vs. Production), the cost ranges anywhere from $1 to $87 per device per year. However, I believe, in specific circumstances, there is no cost but you are limited to a set number of seats.
What Samsung SHOULD be doing is allowing us to unlock our bootloaders in exchange for our warranties.
Then we wouldn't have situations like this.
I completely agree.
