[Q] SD card not recognized - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
My phone doesn't recognize any SD card. I tried everything in the forums, even "fastboot oem enableqxdm 0", that returns "... OKAY".
If I execute "fastboot oem sdtest" an error message is returned:

Thanks for help. Regards

Have you verified your memory card works in another phone and/or computer? Have you tried another memory card in your phone to see if that is the problem?

Yes, I tried with different cards that works perfectly en other phones and computers.

Sounds like a hardware problem then. It might just be dirty contacts on the card reader, or it could be something more major. Most likely it will require sending the phone in for repair (unless you are really technical and are willing to take apart the phone yourself).

Storage Card contents dissapeared. Help!

all of a sudden i realized my storage card's content (2GB) just dissapeared.
I have over half of my non OEM programs installed on it and i cannot use them.
has this happened to anyone before?
how do i fix this?
thanks
Well... It happened to me in some way, but after about a minute all was back again. Don't really know why. Maybe soft reset would help?
I had that issue a while ago, apparently it was gone, but the space was still occupied. I didn't find a solution so i had to reformat it and it never happened again.
This exact same thing happened to me yesterday; all of a sudden, when using Resco Explorer, all of the contents of my storage card disappeared. The card looked blank. However, it also still looked like the space was occupied - meaning I did not have 6 GB of free/empty space - just no content. I re-formatted the card on my desktop and am re-syncing now but I have no idea how or why this happened. I have not recently installed any new software.
Nothing disappeared. Turn off the phone, take the card out and put it back in, then turn the phone on. Did you even soft reset first?

Tried it didnt work. I guess i have to re format
This happened to me and it was from a loose card and a soft reset found my data.
Soft reset didnt help. I tried a hard reset and Nothing. Its like my device cannot recognise my sd card at all. when i check in the setting it says the storage card is not installed.
what do i do?
I can say that it happened to me because I installed a P2P program and it froze and I had to reset. THen my sotrage card got messed up.
It's like any flash memory. If it's in the middle of writing and your phone gets turned off or something then you will corrupt your data. I don't know if you can buy some third party program to get your stuff back. maybe.
????
I had this problem too.....Here's a couple of things you can do
1) take out sd card , take compressed air and blow a little air inside where sd card goes , put card back in and do it slowly wiggle it ever so slightly , take out sd card and do this one more time , this worked for me.
2) in file explorer under "storage card" look for a file called " MSMETADATA ...and DELETE it for some reason this file freezes your device from reading you card
3) go to windows media player and go to library and update your library , see if your sd card shows up there , thats the way I knew my phone was reading my card
4) bad card....I have had a bad card before and it was doing the same , I bought a new one and things got better
good luck my friend
mike
this happened several times on my 8525, and once on my tilt. I've never pinpointed exactly what happened, but it IS a big problem that was supposedly fixed by HTC on the tilt.
I stuck the card in my computer and ran some data recovery tools. They dont always work, but you get lucky sometimes. I then formated the card and copied the data back.

I turned the phone on and off several times and did several soft resets; I also went into Windows Media Player and attempted to update my library but it would not read my storage card. Neither would the "HTC Audio" program, or CorePLayer, or Resco File Explorer/Photo Viewer; nothing would even recognize the card. Also, when I used a card reader in my PC nothing appeared either. I had to re-format and re-copy my files.
Hey guys, thanks for your advise.
Im gonna buy a new microSD card and see if my kaiser recognises it. Hopefully it does. If so thats great.
Just hope its not the phone with the problem.
i'll let u know whats up
by reformat...do u mean hard reset?
Try this:
With the card in a read/writer or adapter that works (not the phone), go into DOS: Start>Program Files>Accessories>Command Prompt or Start>Run and type in CMD and Okay.
Change the directory to C: drive (i.e. cd\C: )
Type chkdsk e: /f /r at the c: prompt (e: is whatever your card drive is).
Let it run. If it asks about saving a file, you may as well say NO as it will be corrupted or a partial file.
Then EXIT and try the card. Data, for the most part, should still be there and not destructed like FORMAT will do.

No - by re-format I mean I inserted the card into a card reader and re-formatted it as "FAT32" on my desktop PC. I tried to do his on my phone first with SK Tools and MemMaid but neither would recognize the card.
Well. My SDcard (scandisk) is not recognised by my phone or my card reader, so i could not format it.
I bought a new Kingston one and my phone recognises it.
I guess it was the card after all.

I had the same problem: after something went wrong with an install file from my card on my Kaiser, all files on the card were deleted.
I was able to retreive the card content on my PC (from a card reaceder) with the free program "PC Inspector File Recovery".
After that, I restored the content to the card. I performed a checkdisk (see Mack5305 above). I then removed the directory MSMETADATA.
After this, I could use the card again.

[Q] Blank SD card or has Unsupported File System Error

The AMOLED screen on my Nexus One broke, so, I sent it for repair to a dealer cause there is no official HTC support for Nexus One in India. Before I sent the phone I took a backup of my SD card and also removed it from the phone.
After I got the phone back with the new screen installed, I put in my SD card and it says Blank SD card or unsupported file system. So, I tried different SD card and the same thing popped up with every card I put in. It would ask me to format the card and even if I formatted, it would not mount the SD card. The SD cards work in all other phones and SD card readers.
So, I sent the phone back to the repair guy and he said that its most probably a software bug because if it was a hardware bug then the error message would not pop up at all. He said that it would be best to reflash the ROM but then he tried and the ROM could not be reflashed.
Now the Phone is with me and everything works except for the SD card. Plugging the phone in the computer also doesn't help as the card is not being mounted by the phone at all.
The phone I am using is a Nexus One with stock ROM Android 2.3.4 (never rooted or hacked).
Please help me find a solution to this. I'm even ready to install a custom ROM but can't do so without an SD card.
Please help!!!
Ok well android can't find the SD card but lets see if your bootloader can if not then send it in for repairs again because it's not software. Check my sig there is a link that says passimg try those instructions and tell me what you get.
Hey,
Thank you for the response but most of the instructions require the SD Card. However, in my case as you know the SD Card itself is not functioning. So even if I download the Passimg file, I can't place it on the SD card.
Is there a way to use ADB to wipe the phone completely and then reinstall the original factory stock ROMS?
I did go back to the vendor and asked him to repair the device but after a heated argument he just said that the device's SD card is working but it is not recognizing the cards in it which he said is because of a software bug and for that you need to re-flash the device completely but he didn't have the means to do it, so now I'm left with an unusable phone.
So, in shot can I do the whole reflash thing without the SD card working?
Thank you for responding, you're the only one so far whose come to the rescue. Waiting to hear from you.
Thanks
Hey,
So I just understood the full extent of your recommendation. You wanted me to check if the bootloader detects the Passimg file or not given that booting into Android is not doing that.
As per the instructions on the passimg page I need to download the FRG83 ROM and apply the update. But I'm just wondering if I do this and if the bootloader actually detects the update on the SD card, won't I also need to downgrade the HBOOT version or is it jut safe to apply the downgraded FRG83 over the GRJ22 build that I currently have on the phone?
The details of my phone are as follows:
Nexusone pvt Ship S-ON
HBOOT-0.35.0017
MICROP-0b15
TOUCH PANEL-SYNT0103
RADIO-5.08.00.04
Oct 12 2010, 14:33:16
Please guide as per your convenience,
Thank you.
I'm not 100% sure but I'd assume that if you do as what you're planning to do.. the HBOOT should also be flashed automatically with the rom. double check incase!
Hi Again,
So, I took the risk and downloaded the FRG83 ROm loaded it into my SD card using a different phone and then put that card into the SD card slot of the Nexus One.
I went into the boot loaded and it automatically detected the PASSIMG.zip file and asked me whether I want to install the Update - I chose YES.
The update installed successfully and I booted into Android. After finishing the Wizard, I checked the Android Version and it says FRG83 but when I look at the notification bar it still shows me the same error "Blank SD card or has Unsupported File System".
So, we can conclude that the SD card and the SD slot work fine.. Any thoughts on what could be done next?
Well that's weird ok well lets see what the computer says. Put the card back in that other phone and connect it to the computer then on the computer go to computer then right click the card (probably E: maybe F: ) then go to properties and check file system make sure it's FAT32.
Not sure if it's wort posting on this thread still, but lots of people come searching for a solution to this problem so I figured I'd post at least another thing to try.
I've had this happen several time on various Android phones. I've been able to bring the card back every time. I throw the card into my micro usb reader, pop it in my computer, and run disk utility (I don't know what equivalent would be for Windows). You should see your SD card come up and see your main data partition there below it. Click on the partition and click repair in the bottom right.
It will run through some stuff and you'll be able to see if it's found anything in need of repair and if it repaired it.
The few times this has happened to me Disk Utility said it was an empty block at beginning of some data or something...
YMMV

When I had this exact problem, I had to replace the SIM/Micro SD flex board to fix it. They were $15 shipped on eBay at the time.

[Q] SD card suddenly inaccessible

Hi All,
Very weird problem I'm having that has made my phone pretty useless. I was happily using the 20140520 version of NovaFusion's CM 11, for a couple weeks. Suddenly (don't know what caused it), my external SD card was no longer available and the CPU was pegged at 1000Mhz. Rebooting did nothing helpful. Since, I've re-installed, installed 0529 and 0603 versions, after wiping the internal SD card completely. The problem remains, even if I don't log into google or CM accounts, so there are no settings that could be non-default!
Now, I would think there is some hardware problem, either the phone or the SD card. But the ext SD card works perfectly fine from TWRP. In fact, that's where I have the Google Aroma which I install each time.
I was able to determine that mmcqd/1 (the process that handles SD card I/O if I understand correctly) is consistently the top app, using around 25% of the CPU at all times, which explains why the CPU would be at 1000Mhz consistently as well.
And in the dmesg log I found that soon after bootup, I get this starting at the 19th second:
mmci-pl18x sdi0: error during DMA transfer!
mmc1: [MMC] DATA TIMEOUT STATUS: 8, CMD 18
mmcblk1: error -110 transferring data, sector 28713856, nr 128, cmd response 0x900, card status 0x0
followed by a large number of errors of this form (continuing for about 40 seconds):
mmc1: [MMC] DATA TIMEOUT STATUS: 8, CMD 17
mmcblk1: error -110 transferring data, sector xxxxx, nr yy, cmd response 0x900, card status 0x0
end_request: I/O error, dev mmcnblk1, sector xxxxx
where xxxxx and yy are numbers which vary.
Finally, when I run:
fsck_msdos /dev/block/mmcblk1p1,
I get:
** Phase 1 - Read and Compare FATs
Attempting to allocate 3803 KB for FAT
Attempting to allocate 3803 KB for FAT
** Phase 2 - Check Cluster Chains
** Phase 3 - Checking Directories
This has been running for about a half-hour without errors (although it might be hung, not sure yet).
Totally bizarre to me. Can anybody help? Unfortunately I don't have an appropriate adaptor, so I can't try the SD card with my PC.
Many many Thanks!

Looks like the check never completed, just hung.
Have you tried another sd-card? Or reformat sd in recovery? Or flashed back to stock to see if problem is still there?
That's the first I should have tried, and in that order
Since it seems to work normaly in recovery maybe you can use adb to pull your files to computer, as backup, before format.
You could also try TWRP 2.7.0.1 It has some new option on repair fileformat for partitions.

Thanks, good ideas. Finally I found another SD card, and it works fine in the phone! I don't understand how TWRP can read it fine but CM can't.
I'm going out to get an adaptor so I can connect it to my computer and check it out / copy off all the stuff I need.
As for TWRP 2.7.0.1, looks like that could be useful but it doesn't seem to be available yet for this phone.
OK. this just keeps getting stranger and stranger.
I got an SD card adaptor and connected it to my windows laptop. The laptop has no problem reading it. So I ran the Drive Error Correction tool to check for errors; I had it check also for bad sectors. It ran and did not find any problems. So, bracing to reformat, I backed everything up and just for kicks I tried to boot CM with it.
Guess what? It works fine. Unbelievable. It's not the first time I tried taking it out and replacing it or leaving the phone off (even overnight).
It's still working after restoring from SD card and rebooting...
What I don't understand is how it can go from not working to working when I didn't write anything to it?
And I also don't understand how the card could have gotten into this position in the first place where CM's kernel basically hung reading the drive (each time it booted), when only CM's kernel had been writing to it since it was working. This points to some sort of rare bug in the I/O software to me. Recall that TWRP could always read it fine, and again, windows had no problem with it.
For the record, the SD card was formatted FAT32, not ExFAT.

[Q] SD card is unformattable and yields "invalid media or track 0 bad "

So this is for a friend of mine and i just spent the last hour or so searching for fixes. he came in to work today complaining that his SD card wasn't working. He plugged it in to his computer using an adapter which the computer recognized and said it needs to be formatted. When he tried to format, it failed multiple times. (we also tried doing this with his phone plugged in via USB but we couldn't access the card that way. The phone wont mount the sd card in his S4 active or my S4)
We then went on to try disk management which also failed. I searched and found a video about using the command prompts and diskpart to wipe it but that failed as well. The computer is also showing his 32gb card as 30.1MB. (this was a problem when we tried to partition it using diskpart)
I found another link in a forum that mentioned using ZAR, that failed, as well as SDFormatter.
He has some nostalgic pictures on there he really would like not to lose so im trying what i can to help him out. I believe i can completely wipe his card if need be but i want to try and recover before it comes to that.
Is there anyway i can fix this or is his card toast?

Asus ZenFone Go ZB500KL cannot detect any SD card

Hi everyone! Firstly, I want to apologize for my crappy English but I will try my best.
Secondly, I know that my question is quite dumb. I have caused my problem by falling in panic and it is my fault.
And for the third time: My problem.
I have formatted my SD card as internal via adb commands. Everything was fine, card worked etc. By some time, I wanted to format it back as external portable storage (just have It working like a normal SD card). At that moment, I have messed it up. I just have formatted It by android settings. (feel free to facepalm) And my phone cannot detect any SD card anymore. But I can detect It by desktop. I have tried formatting it by PC but It did not work.
Thank you for any response.
EDIT: I have corrected the wrong terminollogy.
Have you tried to reflash stock rom? I assume you have root (mounting sd card), so can you download stickmount (thanks @Chainfire!) and mount it there? Open a terminal in your phone and type "df -h", then plug your sdcard in and type the command in again and see if anything new has popped up
Good luck!

Thank you for your response! I am sorry, but I have done some serious mistakes in my thread. (Here comes the real facepalm) I am using a wrong terminollogy. By the term "mounting an SD card" I wanted to say "Formatting SD card as internal". I am sorry for wasting your time, I have to edit my post to prevent that.
I am not rooted, and I do not have unlocked bootloader, but reflashing stock rom is a bright idea!
Thank you for your time, I am sorry for wasting It. Thank you for your patience.
