[Q] Wrong band frequency, software or hardware? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I got my SE Xperia X10 stolen... and I went for my first choice which was this here Google Nexus One... this thing has wings, and with 2.3.4 it is flying ever higher... BUUUUT (there is always a but!) I am on "E", so I went to my carrier (Cable & Wireless Panama), and everything was A-OK, no restriction, nada... went to the place I bought it from, and they say the GN1 was doing ok, just that the bands were not for use here in this region (Panama). My question, hope it is not dumb, can I flash the FW to be able to use my 3.5G here, or I am just S.O.L., and have to settle with having an awesome phone with a 2G connection only?

You can't change the bands. It is hardware based, not software based.

http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=195a58e735bfd17c&hl=en
this gave me hope, and not at the same time... bummer! But thanks!

Sorry bro, if you try to flash the wrong radio fw, you will brick your phone.

Either way, the radio image is the same for both sets of phones out there. The only differing thing is the hardware.
Now, if you flash a radio that isn't designed for you phone (if it even lets you), then yeah, consider your phone a nice big paperweight.

Best radio on Rogers Canada?

For those on Rogers, what do you find is the best radio to use with your Kaiser?
Try the one in my sig.. unless you're using that one.
I'm gunna try a bunch of other ones over the next few weeks, but i'll keep you posted.
FYI I'm with Fido but that shouldn't matter cuz Fido/Rogers uses the same cell towers.
I'll give it a shot. I'm currently using radio 1.58.16.27. I had read good things about it and it came pre-loaded on Dutty's latest ROM. I haven't tried any others yet. When I'm on the phone with this radio, it was crackling a bit but I'm unsure as to whether or not it was my phone or the phone with the person I was talking to. Only made one call as I just got my Kaiser the other day and have been playing around with the other great features of it.
Keep me posted on your findings. Thanks!
whatsup guys,
I've had my phone for a couple months now. 1.58.16.27 is, in my opinion, the best radio for me, in Ottawa. 1.64....21 works really well also.
btw, chek my sig for all radio downloads. I think I have uploaded most of them, if not all.
What's the RADIO thing?
How do you know if it's best or not?
I'm with Fido, and using Dutty April 9 Rom, do you guys have anything to suggest me?

If you check the ROM section in here you should be able to find your answer as to what exactly a RADIO rom is.
Now as for finding the best, each radio will have different effects for most people because of their locations plus carriers. So it's really hard to for someone else to tell you it's the "best" radio, that's something you have to find out yourself.. or have someone who uses the same carrier as you and that lives in the same general area as you.

I did do the search, but nothing was found. Maybe the definition of Radio is too simple to put it into words. I mean, as I understand it's simply a rom that connect to the frequency of the provider's tower...
The only reason I'm looking for it, is because I'm getting sick of having the Roaming logo on my phone. Because i'm with Fido and my phone is connect to Rogers tower.
You are using: 1.27.12.11... I'm using Dutty rom, and RAdio 1.58.16.27 now thou... should I go for yours instead?

the roaming logo will still be there no matter what radio u use...cuz ur still using a fido simcard...correct me if i am wrong...
use wisbar advance and then get a theme and u can not have the triangle...and have a good looking theme as well

Is that mean you have the roaming logo as well?
You'll get the roaming logo more often if your in the suburbs. Rogers is more predominant in the suburbs. Fido is more often found in Downtown Toronto or GTA.
Im using the radio on my sig for almost 3 weeks and reception and GPS is great. Battery life sucks though.
Im gonna back to the SEDNA radio 1.58.13.28 since i had a better battery life than this one.
i do have the logo but it doesnt show up cuz i'm using a vista theme with wisbar advance...i do this because it looks better...but having that triangle doesnt even bother me...not that big of a deal..cuz its not like i'm getting charged for roaming anyways...its because u have a fido sim card but using rogers towers..

Mods can go ahead and lock this

well active sync wont connect anymore i was getting ready to go to a new rom and now active sync wont connect and i hard reset the device so... i need to
a. fix this tonight
b. fix this tonight
or c. go to oem stuff and send it back in (i dont know how to get it back to oem rom without active sync though) also if this helps it will sync to my older comp
You can flash another ROM by going into the bootloader (tri-colored screen) hold the volume down button and reset keep holding until the bootloader comes up then conect to your PC and when you see USB at the bottom you are connected to your PC and can flash any ROM! Thats how you bypass active sync to flash!

Right on! Yea just like normal, double click the wrapper.RUU and your good! Glad that worked for you!
What I did and I would recomend to anyone is to buy a 1 gig SDcard and format it to FAT32 and use that just for flashing, its easy to do and its safer and much faster, cuts your flash time in half! If you are interested I can walk you through it! I havent connected to active sync for a couple of months!

You can but I still think flashing by SD card is the best, it just cuts out the middle man and gets a cleaner flash, less chance of anything going wrong too, ie: cords getting pulled out mid flash, ect, ect. Still, I am not sure if there are long term problems that can come out of starting flash strait from the bootloader everytime, I will have to look into it! Good question though! I am just glad you got it working, hate to see someone lose their phone or be out of one for awhile!

It depends on what bands the phone uses, The tp2 uses 850/900/1800/1900 MHz and at&t uses 850/1900 for their 3G so maybe or maybe not if you buy a euro version as some blackstones dont work with US 3G, but T-Mobile will be getting one and calling it the wing 2 and it will have 850/900/1800/1900 MHz so its possible that will work after it is SIM unlocked, we will have to see! Personaly I love the look of the Fuze and will wait awile before getting a tp2!
Hey im at school and i was thinking if the euro version only works sometimes then should i just wait til it comes out for att. but i wonder how long because i really am thinking about buying a euro version because it is a combo of all the phones i wanted. and did you know that verizon is still selling the the origanal touch
Also hey mods this is getting off topic but the problem was solved so you can lock this if you wish.
long-ass sigs
Seriously guys, especially considering that a lot of people are viewing these threads on telephones, how about rethinking whether or not having 18-line signatures identifying that you are in fact an HTC user (with an image to that effect), that you've used four different phones throughout your life along with individual lines to identify which rom and radio you've used for each (including those roms and radios of your Treos?!) is beneficial to the community. Signal to noise ratio people, signal to noise.
Now that you're thinking, yeah, that's pretty dumb of me, where's the control panel link, now think to yourself, why would you do that in the first place? I mean, c'mon. No one cares that you gave your palm 750 to your dad which ran a stock radio. Christ.
Mods too, you're the worst (I'm looking at you P1Tater) with your animated gifs. Okay I'll obey the rules because you've got high-production-value gifs that are more appropriate for les discothèques than XDA.
Oh and herg, don't get me started on his sig.

Radio version question

I want to install WM 6.5 on my ATT tilt 8925. I just want to know what ROM and what Radio Version I can use, because the radio version is 1.65.21.18. I live in Puerto Rico and I don't know if I change the radio he can still work.
You can use any ROM as long as you are Hard-SPL'd and regards Radio it will come down to many variables and only you will be able to find best ROM/Radio combo..

Wouldn't it be great if one could just indicate where they need the phone to work, and a list of radios could be listed for that location?
I know it is simplistic. Getting tired as I age!

Ain't that the truth, funny thing is that all of the radios I have flashed work in my area. Even the japanese one, just some better than others.
Hi
I try to unlock the phone with JumpSPL 1.56, 1.93, and 1.94, and Kaiser-HardSPL-3.56 and 3.29, and the phone don't install anything. It could be that my phone is refurbish?? What other options do I have?
I here you. Just so you know and are prepared. I have been flashing for 1 month straight and I cant get my phone to stay connected with anything other than the stock ROM. Not sure why but be prepared for a long battle. I have almost every radio available. Works for a day then dropped calls and network over and over.
I have a refurb and flash all the time. Follow instructions carefully and refer to sticky and wicki for help.

Best Radio for Andriod

I was looking into whether some of my GPS problems were due to the radio I was using.
I'm using the last official Sprint radio (which I believe was 3.35). I have seen that some people have been using 3.42.50.
Two questions, first how do I determine what radio I am using if I have android on the NAND and second, would updating the radio improve GPS reception?
Most people use 3.42.50 with AGPS Fix(Assisted GPS) using data. Search vogue agps. Its a process that you will need to do using windows mobile. It will give you gps locks in 5 to 15 sec rather than 30 sec to a minute. You can update the radio without doing the fix. Im not sure how to determine your radio with android. sorry. Not saying there isnt a way
EDIT: Sorry agps is verizon only
Most people in the WinMo forums say 3.42.50 improves reception, some say it doesn't.
I'm on Sprint and I use 3.42.50. Been using it for a long while now, certainly haven't had issues. It's the one I use when doing development on the GPS driver.
honestly after messing with the radio in WM (everyone claiming better results with the bell radio .45, so I had to try it), and not noticing any favorable differences, I ended up back with my factory vzw 3.37.78 radio, which "seems" to work the best for me, yet like I said, almost no difference was noted.
That being said, android "should" not be any different in terms of radio.. as I'm still on the same vzw radio with great gps results running android.
NAND with mssmison's 2.1 build (currently)
xv6900 from verizon (vogue)
** same results with other builds as well
edit: I did not seem to find any negatives to the "upgraded" radio either.. so it doesn't hurt to try, but don't expect the world, as it might not change anything
You're on sprint so you do not need to worry about the aGPS fix either, that's only for vzw vogues

I think U.S Cellular locks gps too, you just don't hear about it in here. I have never noticed a difference between 3.37.78,3.42.30 or 3.42.50. I run 3.42.50 cus I'm cool like that! lol
So, is the only way to upgrade the radio to reflash winmo? I found the .nbh but it wouldn't flash the normal way.

so yeah, what he said..
edit: I've never flashed a radio without using the "radio rom" with WM 6.1 from a carrier... BUT it is possible to flash the radio only, you just might spend more time looking for the .nbh you need to flash..
I recommend just flashing the stock bell wm 6.1 rom to flash the radio, making sure to not let customizations run, then back to android
I'm running 3.42.30 from Sprint.
I never experienced any problems with this version and as they always say. If it ain't broke.. Don't fix it.

Who's your carrier?
The radio you should run has nothing to do with the carrier. All these radios are vogue compatible. The only thing you need is a gps ready radio.
Here is the 3.42.50, 3.42.30, radio only nbh's. These Radio's are gps ready and are not carrier specific
These are radio only roms designed to be flashed from bootloader from sd card and doesn't require a hard reset. Copy VOGUIMG.nbh to root of fat32 micro sd card and place phone in bootloader and it will run.

I'm using 3.42.40. It seems better at holding sats than .50. the .50 version is very "jumpy" when watching a GPS test app.

negative, he was stating that you could not use a SDHC to flash the radio
I never heard anything about sdhc limitations. The only thing I heard was in order to flash from sd it needed to be under 2 gb.

Need Radio Help

Hello,
My name is Brian, I'm a member here obviously.... Had the username BFielding a while back, registered in 2007 if I remember correctly, but can't access or retrieve password for that account, different email now, so now I'm BFielding80...
Heres my problem... I can't get SH!T for help on this site, maybe because it's so overloaded, or maybe some a$$hole said dont help this person.... IDK
All I know is I ask a question and they RARELY get answered.... I'm at the point I'LL ****1N PAY U TO ANSWER MY QUESTION, I'VE BEEN ASKING THE SAME [email protected] QUESTION LONG ENOUGH...
I need radio help. I'm rooted, I run all the ROMs, always Froyo based.... I've never updated my radio from what it came with.... I have radio 32.26.00.24H_4.04.00.03_2
I haven't updated because I don't want to kill my AT&T 3g.... I've read that the TMo Froyo radio will kill my AT&T 3G so thats why I left my radio alone.... But now I'm reading that the newer radios are compatible either way, so I want to upgrade it.
I know I can go back if it does kill my 850/1900, but I would rather someone to just please just recommend me a radio as well as link, I'll adb it myself...
I need a radio for best 3G and battery life would be a plus, but 3G is more important, in my area I drop to edge frequently...
THE PERSON WHO HELPS ME WILL RECEIVE $10 US DOLLARS VIA PAYPAL
Thanks,
Brian

There is where you will get the newest radio image, it is identical to the one found in the Desire 2.2 update. You do not have to update HBOOT if you do not want to, though I could be wrong on that one, though I didn't have to when I did.
If you do not want this version of the radio as some people have trouble with it you can flash the radio that was uploaded by enomther:

Heh, no that is all right. By the way, I kept editing my post a fair bit, sorry.
So there are two 2.2 radios you could flash. The newer one does give you better reception though, I use the 4.06 one though, if you were curious.

I have a tmo n1 and I noticed better reception with the korean radio but I've noticed some roms don't give me better reception but sometimes WORSE. I'm on rodriguez r21 limemod using the 5.06 radio. Works well. Just one off those trial and error things. If you re on edge instead of 3g try the *#*#4636#*#* trick just remember if u you use wcdma only and lose 3g u lose all service and have to change back to wcdma preferred. Good luck...

The ROM shouldn't affect your reception to my knowledge. You may have different APNs set and that could cause issues but even that is a stretch.
What 5.06 radio? 4.06 or 5.08?
Just put both radios on my SD, I'll update through RA recovery, but yall think adb is better?

They both should have the same end result. I usually flash through recovery but to each his own. See which one you like better make sure you checked the MD5sum and make sure they match up.

Heh, let me know how it goes, I'll put a donate button in my signature along with other things once XDA allows me to. Signatures are not allowed for newer users in an effort to stop spam and such. Which is completely understandable. Just means I have to wait to add stuff I want down there. Enjoy.

Haha. Let me know if you have any trouble with the radio. I am thinking of switching back to it.

you should not see any major difference between the two radios when it comes to battery life. i've been using 5.08 since it came out, i have a much more stable signal and battery life is the same for me.
you can also downgrade ur radio whenever you want... just flash the old radio through recovery... you'll be ok
Fastboot is, IMO, the most reliable way to flash a radio. I would rather not leave a brickable upgrade/downgrade up to a script, but that's just my paranoia kicking in. lol.

I have noticed a significant boost in my reception after flashing the 5.08 radio, I used to never get a scent of service in my house, now I'm seeing bars!
Just updated to 5.08. Much better reception now.
