Yep...noob, but the search and googlewebz gave me nothing. I did my first root tonight and it was a success. Rooted the old MT3G back to 1.6 just so the dern thing wouldn't be so slow and to shut up my wife. Now I'm looking for a wifi calling app, but I can't seem to find anything for 1.6, only 2.2.
Anyone have any thoughts?

Anyone? Bueller?
Skype? Fring?
I don't know if you've looked into them or if they don't work for 1.6 but something worthwhile...

I think he is talking about the T-mobile wifi calling app, which allows you to text and make regular phone calls through your wifi instead of cell towers. The problem with getting it onto the mytouch is that i believe it requires certain coding in the actual kernel of the mytouch in order for it to work. I dont think you can just install the apk. I would like to have this too, though.
But then again, maybe thats not what he's talking about. idk
I use Sipdroid for Voip calls. Maybe you can configure it with your provider. It should be compatible with Android 1.5+
3CX is another SIP client you can try

I searched and couldent find anything in this fourm or anywere else. I dont know how PTT or walkie talkie's work but I was thinking they work vary similar and I could be way off on this but I was wondering is there any way to use the PTT part of the phone as a simple short range walkie talkie that will communicate with simple stand alone walkie talkies? I saw a wifi program but I am prettysure walkie talkie's dont communicate via wifi.
hmm that would be kinda cool. Wanna go out in the back yard and play commando?

lol something like that, it would be useful to me at work when me and the guys I work for are on different floors.
I'm going to say no. AFAIK, PTT works more like a regular phone call than an actual walkie-talkie. I don't think the phone has any other kind of radio inside of it.
ah man, why the buzz kill. We're not friends anymore!

yea thats kinda what I was thinking
Several Instant messaging applications (Agile Mobile and Palringo(free), for example) offer a walkie talky like functionality, as long as you are on a data plan or WiFi you can use it.
Palringo even goes a step further with having "Groups" so that you can use the voice chat with a group of people all at the same time.
yea that was what i was about to say
you wont be able to use normal walki talki frequenzies. The normal frequenzies are PMR wich is in the ~446mhz band. our phone work in 850/900/1800/1900 mhz. way off.
Perhaps theres some way to make a new firmware for the radiochips wich would support them, but i doubt that its possible.
As you wont be able to communicate with normal radios, there wont be much sense for you to use that as work.
Hey everyone,
I'm pretty new to the forums so please bear with me if I'm posting in the wrong spot or totally missed a similar thread.
I just recently decided to go ahead and root my phone after the 2.1 update and before that "security patch" closed the hole. So I successfully rooted my HTC (sprint) hero w/ regaw_leinad's post (awesome help thanks btw).
Everything seems to be running great, but one of the main reasons I attempted to go ahead and root my phone was to use some 3rd party apps, most notably the WIFI Tether app.
It installed correctly and everything looks like great except for it doesn't actually seem to connect to anything. I can see the connection just fine on several laptops and even my ipad sees it. I can connect to it, and I can ping the gateway just fine, but when attempting to actually surf the web, grab email, etc it just doesn't work (shows page cannot be displayed).
I've been following a couple of threads that indicate that the something is just simply wrong with the stock 2.1 HTC ROM that prevents it, and you need to change to a custom ROM to get it to work (I think some people are using the MoDaCo (sp??)).
So I'm definitely not opposed to flashing the ROM. Would you agree that is the issue and if so, what ROM should I flash to?
Thanks in advance!
i have the same problem with the stock rom, rooted
i use wifi tether 1.6
http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...il?name=wireless_tether_1_60_htc.apk&can=2&q=
works fine for me on 2.1
Mine connects but without net. I just start up the tether then disable mobile net on the phone then enable it back then works like a charm

Basically, this is a long ass list of different things, but take a look at the bottom post:
Start Wireless Tether
Hold down the red Hang Up button
Tap the last option "Mobile Network to disable my network
Again hold down the red Hang Up button and re-enable my "Mobile Network"
Just confirmed it works - can connect my ipad, mac, pc laptop to it. I'm using a stock 2.1 android that's just been freshly rooted. Spread the word if anyone is having the same trouble.
ah Sim beat me to it
are you using an app off the market or the one on http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether, if so, which version worked for you?
Lol yeah i figured it out yesterday by accident trying to get my laptop going

lol thats slow as he11, must have poor reception usually i can get 1.5 up and .5 down with a 150-300ms ping with good reception.
I had the same problem with the version from the market. I went to the developer's website and there were some newer alternate versions of that app. I installed the one from May 25th (I think) and it works like a charm.
I used the one click root on unrevoked.com to root my Hero
The market version has never worked for me. It actually even says in the notes for the market version there's a new version for the Hero and Legend on the site. That being said, the only one that works for me without disconnecting/reconnecting over and over is 1.60.
"Unable to star tethering. Please try again!"
my hero is definitely rooted i used this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572 awhile ago. I downloaded tether app from google code as posted earlier, but every time i click the green tether it stays start tethering then goes to "Unable to star tethering. Please try again!"
I also tried the hang up button trick as mentioned.
Thanks for your help.
ps. I haven't changed any settings am i supposed to in the Wireless Tether for Root Users? Also is there a specific way to install? I just downloaded by emailing my self url and installing from the device.

Has anyone been able to successfully bypass the the verizon firewalls and been able to have the nfl .apk app to work on the captivate or vibrant?
I downloaded it after using market access to emulate verizon. It installed but just hung on the initial load screen when opened up. I really wanted it too!

I want this too!!
The guys in the nexus forum have been working on this for a while. He finally thought he had gotten passed it, and posted the apk on a different forum. Someone posted the apk on twitter and verizon caught wind of it and sent him a C&D letter. Plus cracking the apk is one thing, but trying to crack vcast is not going to happen. Looks like we are stuck the the espn apk.
Does anyone have a happy alternative to our dilema, other than ESPN's Score Center? It rocked on the iphone, a little too laggy on android. Maybe a good raido app that streams NFL games? Im in Tennessee, and im trying to get my Chicago Bears games. Please, someone help!
i wouldnt think it would be that hard to say get the apk off of the fascinate and then emulate whatever the communications between the phone and verizons server is.........pretty much spoofing verizons server for the app into thinking that its a verzion branded android device and therefor allowing any phone to access it...... of course if it was that easy it would already be done lol.
Looks like they figured it out over in the evo 4g section!!! Only works on wifi for us currently, make sure to reboot your phone after you install.

I tested it. Cannot get it to work over 3G or Wifi. It just sits there and loads forever.
Try rebooting. On my G1 it works over both, but on my gf's captivate it only works on wifi.
i downloaded it, ran droidexplorer to install it and it works flawlessly over wifi. However 3g does not work.
Reboot your phone if it just loads forever
This is amazing....too bad it doesn't work for me on 3G, would love to watch the noon games while i am tailgating on Sunday...
try this out
Hi I am on att using captivate, I just installed this app today and was only able to connect thru wifi as well. I had to get some stuff done round the house and so I turned off my wifi while the NFL app was still running and to my surprise the app still worked and appears to be using my 3G connection.
Works on 3g for me
Yeah I actually downloaded an unlocked apk file at droidforums.net. It is working great over 3g as well for me as of right now on my Captivate.
I however cannot post the link but I will post the apk file.
Also, I'm not sure if it matters but I did have it running first with my wifi on and then I turned it off to test it on 3g. They also have an unlocker tool on that website but I didn't have to use it. Hope it works for you guys.
EDIT: By the way, when you download this through your phone, use Astro or some other file manager to rename it to an .apk file.
NFL Verizon used to work on wireless now not working
Anybody still using this? Even though the app used to run on wireless (3g used to give me some error) after the season got kicked off for real I got a message that I wasn't a Verizon customer. The live streaming never worked, but the app and some of the videos did. I'm running SRE v1.2.2.a (which I know I have to update) but it did work before....anyone else have any luck?
***I must not have been logged in before because I didn't see the zip file above my post last time I saw it, I'll give that one a go***
Worked for me just fine on wifi last night.
still doesn't work on 3g...but
it worked on wifi and I was streaming the NFL channel. It seemed to keep going after I ditched the wifi and was just on 3g, but it won't fire if I just open it up on 3g....
one interesting thing I noted yesterday is that when I turn Mobile AP on and connect my roommate's Vibrant on T-Mo it worked fine, which tells me the app itself is what blocks it from working over 3G vs something like blacklisting the IP's from AT&T, T-Mo, and Sprint...
yeah I mean the only way I get it to work on 3g is if I start it on wireless and then turn wireless off, so there is a check somewhere. Wonder if the app could be faked into thinking it was on wireless or something like that. Anybody have this working on 3g straight from the get go? I get "cannot connect to NFL Mobile. please establish a connection and try again"
With the release of the newest Skype app that supports wifi calling only, is there a way to bond the wifi connection to the cellular connection to allow for calls over 3g?
I only ask because the Skype app is pretty much useless without 3g. Might as well get on a laptop or something.
If some way an app can be written that the apps are for the iPhone then it would work. Ive been using an app called My3G and it does what the OP is asking. It basically tricks the app into thinking its on WIFI but uses the existing internet connection which is 3G.

That would do exactly what I would like. Could easily circumvent the need to be on wifi for Skype.
In the iPhone app, does it do this systemwide or is it application specific?

I was going to say, but you beat me to it... I been waiting since mid 2009 for this damn app, first on AT&T and now on my TMO Vibrant. Getting very sick of the wait, in fact this is getting down right evil of them....

Yeah, sadly, the ETA is when Froyo drops.
The only skype app. Other then the skype light. Doesnt allow calls only chat.
The normal skype is verizon only. What it does is call a white-listed verizon number to allow data to pass trough it for free.
There is no way up until now. Even fring is now cut off skype.
Just wait.
nimbuzz works it has skype and does calls
might just be me, but i can never get nimbuzz to work for skype calls except on Wi-Fi. the call quality is simply too ****ty otherwise. Call connects but the lag, delay, and distortion makes it unusable.
One Solution
Tether and Skype with your laptop / netbook.
I know, I know... defeats the point of the thread...
but this IS a workaround
Why not just use google voice since it integrates so well with the phone?
People keep saying to use Google Voice, but my Google Voice has absolutely no option to use the data connection to make calls. Am I missing something? All Google Voice does for me is call me from a Google owned number and connect the call... this still uses up minutes. What's the point of using Google Voice to avoid soaking up your plan minutes? Is there some way to make SIP calls with GV that I'm missing?

Nope. GV is NOT VOIP and it uses a standard voice call, so yes, minutes get used. I don't get why people keep suggesting it in these threads either. The only SIP I know of for Android is SIPDroid, I played with it, but I don't use enough minutes to care about VOIP on my cell. If I were prepaid or something, I would care more.
To hack Skype to bypass the wifi requirement, you will likely need to use a AOSP android build. I suspect they are using the Android APIs that include a method to see if WiFi is connected. You could change the source for that method to tell apps that WiFi is connected when it's not, I suspect you would want to check the app IDs or something to only do it for some of them though.
Another option is to try disabling the check in the app itself, but that involves decompiling or bytecode modification and gets ugly fast. Probably easier to grab the app from a foreign phone that's not restricted to WiFi.
Hello guys, I wonder if you can help me at all. I have installed Orbot on my I9000 running android 4.2.2 (cyanogen). It works OKish but the phone often disconnects itself from the tor network and I have no idea why. I had a look around the net for a possible explanation but I couldn't find much about it, so I thought I might ask here. Also, not sure if it is related to the above, but when I log in onto skype while Orbot is connected, I can get into skype all right but shortly after it disconnects me from skype, or to be precise, I am still logged in but clearly not connected to it because the online contacts disappear. Again I had a look online, but found very little: some people say you can't use VOIP over TOR, some others say you can. To be honest I haven't got as far as trying it. Anybody has any thoughts?
For your connectivity issues, I'm not sure. Orbot has been getting a lot of issues on newer android versions lately. Could be the latency on your network is too high.

You can do voip over Tor, as long as it uses TCP. Skype will fall back to TCP when UDP fails, so it does work over tor. I'm assuming you're rooted and using the transparent proxy feature to get skype through orbot, since it doesn't have proxy config options. I just made a call with skype over tor using Anonify on my note 2 and it worked fine. I was using wifi though. Calls may have some latency issues through tor.
More info about skype over tor: guardianproject.info/2012/12/10/voice-over-tor/
Hope that helps.
Thanks, sorry for the slow reply. In a way yes it helps, I know more about it now, but I tried to place a call on skype with the proxy on and the call doesn't go through. Moreover, when I switch on skype (proxy already on), it shows no online contacts even if they are online.
Is there a way to change the latency?
thanks
Latency issues are usually unavoidable.
