UPDATE 4

So looks like they only won on a minor issue. Everything else is fine and dandy
Thanks to samfirmware
I think samsung will implement cyanogenmod officially on all galaxy device thats why they have hired stev kondik because implementing android 3.0 is not a bright idea on phone since it is optimized for tablet. Also we have to wait and see wether ice cream sandwich solve this problem.1 more probability is that samsung implement pure android UI just like nexus s.
As far as apple is concerned, everbody know that they are capable of of nothing other than blocking their competition.Fu** apple and steve job,he is going to die soon

Updated my first post as Samfirmware retracted their original statement (Miscommunication?)
Seems like Samsung wins!!! Except they have to remove the gallery app from their devices ?? (but who cares! )

They will not be implementing cm7, and the thing about 3.0 was about the galaxy tab.
Since the phones are banned they will need to change the software based on the infringing patents and go back to court with the latest models which could take months even years.
Sadly samsung will probably have to just make a new galaxy s 2 under a new name to continue sales
edit: ffs.. this is constantly changing, I retract my latest comment.
First of all: **** apple with there ******* **** devices that are locked up like there Joran van der Sloot, WTF!
I'm never gonna buy any device from them again, i have a iTouch (2g) and its locked up as hell, and if i want to jailbreak the thing gets even slower then it already is.
I hope that when they remove the gallery they'll state that it's available on the market for free (gallery 3d, I think).
I'm dont think they'll change it with the SGS, they'll probably just stop selling them as the sales are low and they have the SGS plus.
I'm living in the Netherlands and I was thinking that the court here would be better then in the US.
But i'm having my doubts about that.
All the android devices have a gallery where you have to swipe to see the next picture, why is Apple riping samsung and not Google (there scared of google?)

Why are samsung leaking these to test, The FroYo FW must be into a good stage of development by now, I am unsure why we are 'beta testing' this and hoping for FroYo to be released working well straight off the bat,
Do you guys think we will get FroYo releases before it is officially released? I mean all these firmwares we are testing will be made into one that gets officially released.

I nearly fell from chair.
IF they would release thier Froyo as beta to this forum - they could get beta feedback by reading about bugs posted by us AND does not have to deal with the consequences we know how to reflash - "normal" users dont.
So Win Win for both.
Yeah, you really should have titled the thread as a question. As worded, it makes folks think it's actually happened.

I fired up a google search and i found a lot of hits about a froyo alpha on a galaxy spica. Maybe some things got mixed up.
Yep, can't find anything about Froyo alphas or leaks for the Galaxy S, just for some of the older Galaxy phones.
I think we Android owners are a fairly impatient bunch.
In the time it's taken for the iPhone to go from 3.0 to 4.0, Android has had:
- 1.6 Donut
- 2.0 / 2.1 Eclair
- 2.2 Froyo
The phone manufacturers must have a heart attack every time a new version of Android is released and their handset owners immediately begin screaming for it...
Luckily the Galaxy S is the flagship of Samsung which they intend to sell 10 million of, so chances are we'll be seeing good support and the stream of beta firmwares shows they're not sitting still.
Froyo has been confirmed for August in Korea, and most likely September in international markets.
We've got to be patient and remember the Nexus One is still the ONLY Android phone that has received an official Froyo update as of yet. Even the Desire, EVO 4G, Droid, Incredible and Droid X are still on the waiting list.
From the sounds of it August-October will be the time the various handset manufacturers will be rolling out their Froyo updates.

Well they don't do themselves any favours by launching a new phone every couple of weeks and insisting on putting their own UI on top of Android.
Looking further afield: anyone think that Samsung will put Gingerbread on this baby?

Possibly but I think I have to go with the sceptic masses here that say samsung support isn't good in longterm and so I guess they won't do that. Unless ofc gingerbread is going to bring the massive UI update that vanilla android so desperately needs for usablity and samsung decides that touchwiy isnt necessary anymore.

There are developers assigned to port CyanogenMod to the Vibrant (T-Mobile US version):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=729364
Unfortunately, looking at Wes Garner's Twitter, he seems rather more keen on the Slide than the Vibrant:
I like the slide better
@wesgarner so does that mean your gonna keep developing for the slide?
@XJRodzx probably more for it than the vibrant

So don't know how that's necessarily going to work out. The intention is there, though, anyway - hope it's still in progress!
I have doubts with Gingerbread...from what we know so far, it's supposed to have a (MUCH NEEDED!) UI overhaul based around the Gallery's sexy look.
If a phone is launched with a certain interface, chances are the manufacturer probably wouldn't be keen on releasing an update that changes everything because of the issue with it being different to what the buyer paid for. Basically, it changes the product, and the picture on the box is no longer what you've bought. It's all well and good with something like Eclair to Froyo since it's largely just performance improvements and some new features rather than an overhaul.
If anything, I think Samsung would be more likely to release a new version of the Galaxy S at Gingerbread's launch. Much like it's doubtful the HTC Desire / Evo 4G / Incredible will get Gingerbread updates. Instead, HTC will probably have new devices ready for the new interface.
The Nexus One is the only current device I believe has a chance of Gingerbread, mainly because it's the 'official' Google phone and has been promoted and sold as a developer phone. They'll be wanting some nice apps ready for Gingerbread when it launches which will obviously need to be in development before Gingerbread-equipped phones launch.
seen the galaxy s II 2.3 with touchwiz 4.0 and the ui seems nicer. implementing new way to add widgets and other stuffs.
are we going to get that with our old galaxy s?
but 1 thing annoys me most is that, there is NO SCREEN OFF ANIMATION!!! [is there?]
which is one off the coolest thing i look forward in getting gingerbread.
I don't think we will ever get 2.3 on our i9000 devices. Samsung wants us to buy their new phone to get 2.3. Samsung is not apple, they don't really care about their existing userbase as much as apple does.
I highly doubt we will get 2.3, since thats what SGS2 comes with.

I am almost certain we'll get 2.3, it will just take time.
The Galaxy S is going to be a dominate seller in many markets for months to come, and some versions of it (like the Infuse) have yet to even ship.
We'll see Gingerbread, it will just take time.
Personally, I'm putting my faith in CM7 which is great already and only getting better.
well if u dont want still pictures CWM7 seems to be working perfectly fine and with gingerbread launcher its stock 2.3.2
We will get it.
I am sure, We will get 2.3 base ROM and of course , TouchWiz 4.0 as well ...
I think its the only way samsung can create base for TouchWiz users ...
Would be mistake if Samsung will not release 2.3 for SGS ... I am sure, 2.3 would be last update for SGS as well.
SGS 2 out followed by price drop on SGS 1 followed by 2.3 update .
jje
They will probably release an update after SGS2 will reach a certain amount of sale number.
i m gussng we will get android 2.4
Dont think so ...
But, we will get GingerBread with New thouchWiz .... It makes no sense to maintain two diff. TouchWiz for Same version of Android ... Too much efforts ...
Point is ... When will we get it ???

I suspect you're right.
Samsung (from a sales point of view) would be stupid to give us all Gingerbread with Touchwiz 4.0 *right now*, as the only differential then to Galaxy S2 would be processor and screen. Samsung rightly want to push sales of the S2.
I'm guessing that once S2 has been out for a while (3 months say), then Samsung will release the pre-made Gingerbread firmwares for select older phones. As the Galaxy S has been (and will continue to be in lesser markets) a very strong sales device, I expect we'll then see Gingerbread on the S.
Of course, the reason Apple works in a different way is because to them everything is about keeping their userbase. They need to do this as there's no one else selling an iOS phone and so to protect their market share, they need to keep their users (reduce churn). Of course, from a sales perspective, they'd be *FAR* better off to never release an update for an older device; which is generally why you always find those updates are not-quite-so-good, or somewhat-slower than they need be on older devices.
(of course, there's nothing to stop some nice people leaking Samsung's dev. builds of Gingerbread for the Galaxy S)

You are missing:
-more RAM
-21 Mbps quad-band HSPA+ radio

It's a better phone.
Now Samsung should still release 2.3 for the Galaxy S if they want people to consider them as a reliable company supporting their products.

Agreed.
They still have to release the source code which can then be ported to the SGS by other people. We don't know how easy that will be though.
I know a lot of people say they will avoid Samsung if they don't give proper updates and whatever, but they do use the best hardware in the phones.
The processors, GPUs, screens, sound processors... if only the quality of the software could match it.
All the phone manufacturers suck in their own ways. Motorola with their locked bootloaders and lack of updates (especially their non non-US phones), SE has that problem and lower end hardware in their phones, HTC sucks for sound quality and battery life, Nokia... well I shouldn't need to explain that
actually apple does the same through tricks.. you'll notice every major os + phone upgrade, the last phone upgrade sux balls
after 3-6month they provide an optimization update that makes the last phone perform properly.
they also voluntarily remove some software features (like wallpaper!!!) saying it needs "too much resources". Of course jail broken phone use these features on older phones without any problem.
Anyhow I wish some nice dudes leak the firmwares, too

For Samsung not releasing 2.3 for SGS1 is like shooting them self in the leg.
They will lose me and many others who already think that the best phones to buy are only Google's branded ones.
Personally, I will not buy any Samsung phone again and I don't care how good it is if this is direction things are going on.
PS
Crossing fingers for CM team.
I think threatening samsung of never buying from them again won't work...
After a few years you will eventually forget about it, or they will release a really good phone that would make you forget...
Not threatening, applying.
There is a reason why I've dumped iphone and as long as apple won't change their ways they can forget about me and people that I know.
Same goes with samsung. Dumping their clients support won't make them any good.

What phone are you going to buy then? The current Google branded one is Samsung anyway, and HTC only supported phones like the hero for a short time too (it's stuck on 2.1).
Let me know how your Windows Mobile turns out..
I remember reading news some time ago that said the Galaxy Tab 7" would be getting Gingerbread by the 1st Qtr of 2011. Well there's 2 days left and I haven't seen or heard anything about this..not even anything about it getting postponed.
I know we all want Honeycomb on our devices, i'm just being more realistic about what we can get now. A bunch of devices already have 2.3, when will the tab get it?
Does anyone have any news whatsoever about official firmware updates from Samsung?

IMO, it's too early to say this.
Samsung are supposed to be releasing a WiFi only 7" Tab in April. It remains to be seen what they will do, support wise, after that.
We should also bear in the mind that the vast, vast, majority of recent smartphones haven't had a Gingerbread update yet either (at least not an official release), so I think it is premature to be calling Samsung out on this.
Even the Nexus One has only just had its official Gingerbread update, and that was "supposed" to get it first, but the Nexus S spoilt that party!
Personally, I would never say that I wouldn't buy manufacturer XYZ's devices ever again, because that's just setting yourself up for a fall when they release something really, really unique and desirable!

Dave

id agree with you usually but in the case of the what i like to call "galaxy try it on the consumers and if it sells we will make a proper one"
Im going back to HTC personally soon as I get chance, their lack of silence speaks volumes, they mouth off about new products and the all singing all dancing features, but the tab has to be one of the worst supported devices ive ever owned, the I9000 has had 2 leaks now for gingerbread with the last one said to be the RC
we have had all of what 3 "fixes" this year and one of those was bodged and none where official.

Is it really any surprise that the I9000, which has sold an order of magnitude more and was released several months prior to Tab, is getting more Gingerbread attention?
I'd expect the Tab release of Gingerbread to be built on top of the I9000 build, so this is pretty much what I'd expect.

the original Galaxy Tab is no dead product!
Samsung will keep this on the market, as they are ATM the only bigger company which has a 7" Tablet.
And they want to fit all user groups
7" 8.9" 10.1"
so if they are not as dumb as apple they need to bring an update for the tab!
but 2.3 will be dead and, as 3.0 needs an other license from google, and samsung will imho not pay for it...
lets hope too see an update!
How do you mean another license from Google?
Android has always been available for free, and although Honeycomb sourcecode has not been publicly released(yet!!), i'm sure it's available to Samsung.
Although 2.3 is nice(running it at my Nexus One for quite some time now), it's not a big step compared to 2.2, and it's got no advantages for a tablet.
It's very possible that Samsung is working on a HoneyComb release for the Galaxy Tab.

I tend to agree that whilst a new OS version is always nice, this isn't as big a jump as going from say Cupcake to Eclair, or Eclair to Froyo. Sure, there are some nice features in Gingerbread, and some people will want them more than others.
As has been said before many times, if you bought a device based on what it could do *if* it receives an upgraded OS, you didn't purchase wisely. Buy for what it does today (bug fixes excepted of course!).
However, if a company does come out and say that they will be upgrading the OS to a later version, they should be true to their word.

Dave

What google did was require a second license for 3.0 but in that license there is language that states any tablet shipped with android 2.x cant be upgraded to android 3.0 which in effect means that no company will beable to offer an upgrade.

The Galaxy Tab does seem to be a dead product, judging by the track record of samsung. That's not stopping me from getting one, as its an awesome device (gonna replace my Win7 Tablet PC and Galaxy S).
The Galaxy S is dead too, and the old Omnia I had was also abandoned early on, even while it was still the flagship (there was no replacement yet).
Looking back in time,I remember how Samsung did some fabulous polishing work on Froyo 2.2.1 even after the release of the first GBs.I was glued to the last of the 2.2.1s before migrating to GB.
Between JVP to the leaked JVT,I see polish being added and now that ICS is just around the corner,Samsung must be able to release the full fury of GB---HOPEFULLY!
History has always repeated itself so let's hope for the best!
...so now it is here even though as a provider affair but a more common leak with multi CSC can't be far behind.more polished than XXJVT
Waiting for ICS. I don't think there will be major changes in next release.
i am also waiting for ICS
It's time not for a ROM but for a position from Samsung if Galaxy S will be getting ICS or not. They fooled me very much in buying this thing in the GPS department ( GSMArena also, with the review against Iphone 4 that praised this piece of crap stock software they loaded in this great hardware ). The least they could do is bring ICS to I9000. If they don't do this, then I am really, really sorry but Samsung and Android failed to me and I learned my lesson and no more Samsung or Android devices for me if they continue doing this.
WHY? Samsung has been one of the first manufactures that constantly updates their devices, obviously most of the updates are leaked, but thoos exist. Not like Sony Ericcson wich wasted months to develop GB to their xperia line.
I don't know the case of LG, Motorola, or others. But samsung and HTC are the best option (for me) on android, based on devices and updates.

I really wonder if Sammy would update our phones to ICS. Not that i'm going to use samsung rom (they're so damn slow), it's just interesting.
ICS on Galaxy S? Why? We have hardware buttons, thanks to gods. I don't need another black line eating my screen space.

Dude, if we become ICS it will look like GB, just with TW3. So no black lines. I think and I hobe that we get ICS, because Samsung will keep us as their Customers. And I'm the first who will buy a Samsung phone after my contract expires
+1 on ics...

The Galaxy S2 gets ICS, but the i9000 only get a rumour so far
im not pretty sure about this but i read some things about this 4.0.5 and it was said it was going to be released on i9000
4.0.5 said to be has a BIG performance fix..
i got this news from this link
http://www.androiddigit.com/samsung-galaxy-nexus-and-nexus-s-to-get-android-4-0-5-ics-in-march/
Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S
The news link clearly states only the galaxy nexus and nexus S. Plus it was abundantly made clear in older news posts around the net that the i9000 is not getting ICS and neither will it get the rumored Value pack. As I too am a i9000 user, it kinda sucks to know this
i know samsung said something like that...
but.. dude i think theres a big possibility due to this
Performance FIX thing.. because thats the only one stopping from galaxy S to ICS is Performance..
I'm no great shake on what appears to me to be French, but...
1) Your Article was written for the Nexus and Nexus S and not for the GT-I900Xx (a.k.a the Galaxy S)
2) Where the Article in question even mentions the Galaxy S (Some Table taken from a presumably French source), states quite clearly (even to a non French speaker like myself that the Galaxy S is to only get Android 2.3.6 (Presumably the Value Pack Version), release date February 2012 to be released over Kies.
To indirectly quote your Source it was a table of Official Updates for their current line of Phones.
So I fail to see where you misread this Article into thinking that the Galaxy S was somehow going to get an ICS Update, when Samsung have up to this point stressed that they would not, or could not officially update the GT-I900Xx do to whatever limitations between Touchwiz 3.0 and ICS.
**Edit** What Samsung we're not even gonna get the Value Pack now?
/r/ Sauce kthnxbye!
No chance! Wishful thinking at best. SGS is useless with its 512mb RAM. Either that or the software engineers at Samsung can only compile bloat. The latest iOS seems to function perfectly on iphone4 though. Split between whether i should wait for SGS3 or grab the next iphone and jailbreak the hell outta it. Hmm decisions decisions...

U really think galaxy s1 will get Android 5?

common guys...what makes you thinking that we'll get android 5?
Samsung will forget our phone, if he doesn't yet....
there's ported sgs2 ics firmware for sgs, it's on pre alpha state but its working very good, i'm using it right now
sgs has enough power to ics to work fine

Samsung might forget us, but XDA devs won't! And if the unofficial ICS builds are any indication, our phone sure is powerful enough to handle ICS.
It sure does suck that we're not getting official ICS, but the awesome community here has infinitely improved my experience, so for that I'm glad and grateful.
Like Samsung is going to go trough the trouble of making an ICS version for a phone that is almost two years old.
I'd rather have them focus on creating top-notch software for my next phone..... The SGSIII......
