After coming the new Asus Infinity tablet, and after returning/exchanging my 4th one caused by QC issues, feeling bitter, I thought I'd never (At least until QC is fixed) purchase another Asus tablet again.
Opportunity struck when I was bored and tablet-less, to purchase the Nexus 7 that was on hold from a friend with my name on it. Supposedly I purchased the last Nexus 7 within a 170Mi radius of local stores relative to me, remarked a District Manager of the store.
A shot in the dark, yes, after being through hell with the Infinity.
I absolutely pre-judged this devices 7inch screen, lack of rear camera, lack of ports, etc to justify buying Asus' Flagship latest Transformer tab.
I cant seem to put this damn thing down, I use it constantly, the form-factor is a perfect size and weight, the back feels great to hold. No issues with QC (yet), not a single dead or hot pixel, no screen raising or separation, no creaking or squeaking, this unit feels solid. FYI: My unit is from the 'C8 Serial Number' series.
The biggest issue I have yet are from the bystanders who approach me wherever I seem to go and ask me about my 'iPad Mini' or how did I get an 'iPad Mini'.
Within a 40 minute coffee shop sitting, 7 people approached me asking if it was an 'iPad' mini. I spent twice as long explaining them it's not an iPad Mini, its a Nexus 7, it runs Android OS, etc. Then bombarded by their questioning on why I didn't wait for the iPad Mini and ridiculed as to why I didn't have an iPad yet.
This is my first 'real' Android device, let alone tablet (not counting the Infinity which never left my house, except for the BestBuy exchanges).
I've learned that the confusion of the Nexus 7 for an iOS/Apple is inevitable.
So I raced home and came up with an easy solution... attached are photos.
Yes it's actually easier going with their beliefs of it being an iPad Mini then quickly hiding the device in my bag and watch them try and snap photos from across the room. It also gives me an excuse to quick-pitch the curious that 'they never saw this', and 'we never and cannot talk' which usually does the trick.
A fun game I am enjoying as I await my case to arrive...
Cheers to all the newfound friends and support on here. I'm blessed.

It's doubly funny because it trolls the Apple zombies and a offends the Android fanboys.
Don't you know, Apple invented the 7in formfactor. As soon as they get them out the door in September, they will start legal proceedings against Asus for copying their ideas.
Really, Apple fanboys laughing at you... I think the joke is actually on them...
I love my Nexus7. I bought our first one for the missus - I had a Asus Transformer 10in Android tablet/netbook, but I have since sold that and bought a second Nexus 7 just for me (I could never get on the first one). Both are perfect and both are used CONSTANTLY.
7in tablet is perfect for me, and the spec and price of the Nexus7 are perfect two. I can buy "his and hers" Nexus7 for the price of a single iPad. So who is REALLY the fool?

Good to find this forum and be here with all of you!
lol i do.
yesterday i needed some quick cash because of a move im doing and i was short on my energy bill...
so i put my sprint galaxy nexus on craigslist for sale/ trade.
last week i got it new in the box for 150. a deal to me for sure.
i got a bunch of crap offers but eventually someone offered me their epic 4g touch and 100 cash for the gnex.
so we met up at a sprint store and called customer care because the store cannot do active phone swaps and we both went home happy.
right away i listed the phone on craigslist, within a few hours i got a few offers, mostly junk but one was or seemed to be worth while.
a white iphone 4 8gb, with case and charger, even trade. so telling her i was interested i posted the white iphone up on craigslist also forsale/trade before i even had it. i got many offers, a few low balls (lol even 50 dollars with the excuse that its outdated and old and the new iphone will be out this month lol), then a 225.00 offer, a 200 dollar offer, you get the idea. i entertained them all, but one of the guys ended up changing their minds and made a even better offer, he retracted his 200 dollar offer and said he would trade me his mint condition epic 4g touch with case, charger and 100 cash... BINGO lol, i quickly accepted.
how could i loose, i met up with the girl at 615pm to do the swap for my epic touch for her iphone 4, after thats done i wait for the guy who comes at 7 and we call sprint all over again and do another swap, it all works out and i leave with another 100 in cash and the same phone i came in with lol.
so i was tainted with a apple phone for about 10 mins... Lol it wasn't that bad but the screen was hard to adjust to.
anyone else flip on craigs? needless to say i have my epic back up on CL for hopefully another trade or sale.
i already got my epic touch running jellybean and honestly its not too much different then my gnex minus the lte which i dont have yet and the HD screen which is noticeable to me.
Seems kind of immoral to me. It's like abusing Wal-Mart return policies to make a buck. You're using Craigslist outside of its intended use for profit. But you do what you gotta do to make the bills work: I personally would not make a habit of "flipping phones".

lol immoral?
im using a public website that is made for buying, selling, and bartering.
thats exactly what im doing.
im not "abusing" or misusing anything, and its not a mega corporation where im scamming their return policies.
its a buy sell and trade website..
thats exactly what im doing.
in fact there are reality tv shows based on this same thing, that where they use outlets like craigslist, people do it with everything under the sun, from tvs, to cars.
im not ripping anyone off or telling people things that they arent.
im giving people what they want and im getting what i want.
exactly what the website is for.
When you start to talk about morality, you instantly are entering into a subjective paradigm in the philosophical/metaphysical sense. However, I do agree you're in a way taking advantage of peoples lack of knowledge on the tech you're trading. Is this immoral? Depends on how you define it. If both parties are happy and walk away from the deal feeling like their was an equitable exchange, then I personally don't think so. Ignorance is bliss I guess. Now, if you intentionally mislead the other party into believing they're getting a much better offer than they realize for your profit then yes this is, to me, immoral, but I don't think your doing this. It is the reason I believe the majority of advertisements and those working in the field are in some sense immoral, but this is getting off topic.
In short, I haven't done it and for me the amount of time and effort isn't worth the small return.
I didn't mean to imply you're ripping anyone off. I just find it interesting how one can make a buck nowadays. I stress the kind of part because I read about the iphone part and it boggles my mind how people are willing to pay so much for so little. I get that if the needs are met then it's fine. However it boggles me further how people can conclude the iphone 4 and the galaxy s2 phone is of equal value. Galaxy s2 clearly has better specs plus MIUI more than makes up for the iOS experience. I get that not everyone is gifted with our passion which is why I use the term "immoral" for someone who knowingly barters with this information in hand. But I do agree with l3lessed that if the girl is happy then that's what matters. Then I conclude that while the ends justifies the means this time, I wouldn't make a habit of this kind of business.
That said: I'm sure you can many people in the MP that has "flipped phone".

Ahh I see.
I was just short this month and this way its legal Lol
Everyone was happy. In fact all the deals I did were brought to me, made by the other party.
I agree the iPhone to me isn't worth much but as everyone can see they have a huge faithful following, enough so to dump more premium phones (in our eyes) in order to have one.
Locally regular iPhone 4 non s versions are still selling more than galaxy s2s.
Its mind boggling to me actually.

I flip phones all the time. If i find a great deal then i will most definitely snatch it up. One thing I never do is low ball. I always offer them a fair price that's low enough for me to make a profit, yet sits well with conscience. Business on Craigslist is easy money if you can negotiate.

I can't see the immorality in his actions. He's entertaining offers from others and not misrepresenting his goods. If anything, I'm impressed by the fact that youre arranging Craigslist deals in advance and juggling it all. You should get into stocks or futures or something and make real money with your talents.
It's not immoral, nothing wrong with it.
I have done that once or twice, it's how I get "new phones for free" but honestly it takes too much time/effort/driving and to me is not really worth it. I do it like once a year to upgrade my phone but that's about it. It's not a bad way to get a decent device though, just be willing to put up with all the BS that goes along with it.
I actually prefer the MP here for the most part, except for a few items that are overpriced here that I want to buy or underpriced (compared to local prices) that I want to sell.

Low ballers make me sick, but that's just a part of Craigslist.
Its not hard to do,but can be time consuming and irritating when you run into tire kickers and people who bs.
Throughout all the years I've used Craigslist for everything under the sun, from TVs,to fish tanks,to cars, refrigerators and probably other things I can't recall. But I've never have had one bad experience, never been robbed or put into any bad situations.

I've never been robbed either. Just very nice people looking to buy and sell items.
If they want quick cash and I'm willing to buy, so be it. I take the time to relist the item and sit on it for a few days, a week, hell I've sat on an item for 3 months! It's all about time and effort. Here in NJ, there are really good deals. Business is just business.

I made money on craigslist this pass week. I just sold my GS3 for $400 (which I bought new for $440 on eBAY) and with the money I bought a white EVO LTE in mint condition for $225 which I sold on Ebay for $340 ($300 after fees and ship).
I list it on XDA http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1900703 but the memebers here are to cheap to even recognize a good deal.

I made some additional moves on Craigs list recently which I didn't post about.
I traded my gs2 for a white 16gb 4s which in return i traded for a new in the box black evo lte.
Sad to say I'm surprised that the resale value on these phones aren't higher, because the lte is not too much different than the gs3...

Can not for the life of me see how this phone is so cheap considering the specs and build quality. Anybody had any hands on experience with the phone find any flaws? If I get the money I'm almost definitely going to buy this. I just hope that the battery life and sound quality are decent as to me it just seems too cheap to be perfect. I also hate the snobbery from the iPhone users who have seen the price of this and think what a load of cheap garbage but I'd love for this to prove them wrong.
It's not that this phone is cheap, it's that unlocked phones are CRAZY overpriced.
There is no catch, Google wants to get consumers away from carrier control and push their Android ecosystem. Win/win for them.

Search Nexus 4 reviews on Google, I'm sure you bound to find many advantages and disadvantages. Biggest ones to concern me is the glass back breaks easily and that storage wise you only get 8GB or 16GB. Not having LTE isn't a problem since I'm with T-Mobile.
They are probably only barely breaking even on the costs; phones like the Galaxy S III and the iPhone 5 have a unit cost much lower than their retail cost. Gotta make money somehow. I'm not sure what Google's motivations are with setting these prices, but they're not making a profit from them.

Probably pushing stock android and android development. Google isn't looking to get a profit on the phone, but they are looking to get a profit on what you do with the phone (aka: search).

That's very interesting Daniel. It kind of sounds like how Sony sold the ps3 at a much lower price than it should be sold. They were losing money to push blu ray so maybe google are selling a really "affordable" High end phone to push android that one step further than iPhone.
Its Google flexing a little, its all about market share so break even is fine. Im aliitle concerned about when motorola takes the lead, though that could be a year or two away. no complaints if they want to give me a break. Im on t-Mobile too so no big deal LTE.
The catch is they know you will buy apps. + you may be tempted to get one for other peeps in your life as they are cheap and its xmas time. These peeps, will also buy apps.

I suppose the glass breaking could be an issue but then again I treat my phones like the crown jewels so I doubt that would be a huge problem for me. Also being in the UK on three I get decent HSPA speeds so the lack of LTE or 4G is absolutely irrelevant to me and most of the UK. The faster phones processors are getting the faster web browsing is with 3g anyway so I'm not fussed for 4g at the moment.
Right, they want Android everywhere and this is how Android wins eventually..not to mention it costs them squat per phone to build..

So it's a marketing ploy to really push android. I'm fine with that As long as they weren't sacrificing any quality with the phone. This is surely exciting. I hope I can get one as soon as possible. I'm a huge phone geek (well that's obvious being on XDA as we all are) and I've never seen anyone with a Nexus device in the UK so I think it will be great If people in the UK will start getting them. I've always been with sense so vanilla will be a completely new experience.

haha I'm so glad no one has said it. It barely matters to anyone outside of the US!
As great as this price is to get Android out into the world more, I just have a feeling that since the phone is only being sold on the play store for the (majority of people to buy) I am concerned that if they dont go all out on commercials (which they should of started with already IMO) then I have a feeling that they wont get many new people buying the phone.

Not sure there's a catch. I don't like the glass back. Seems like they're copying Apple. I also don't ;like how you can't remove the battery. They wear out after a while.
I hope hope hope that they improved the camera. When the Galaxy Nexus was released, it was promised that it took pictures instantly. This was an improvement from my older Androids which used to take 2-5 seconds to focus and snap a pic. However, the camera on the Galaxy Nexus was weak as hell. Grainy and blurry in low light and only 5 MP..
Most likely, Google is making a limited profit with this device because they just want to get it out there.

That's what I'm thinking. I'm sure the bulk of their profit from Android is based on the play store. Lower the cost of phones, get them in to the hands of more people, and in turn the people buy more apps from the play store. There's their profit:thumbup:

Cost for making an iPhone 5 is $389.XX. Read it in the Time magazine. This may answer the question.
Its not marketing.. its just how they do money. Google is the second most profitable company in the world. And now of that was accomplished by selling hardware. Selling hardware at cost that boosts their income method is the best way to stay in "what they best". Plus it has some perks like happy customers, injected competition and market confidence.
On the other side of the medal, you have apple, the most profitable company in the world, that makes their money on high margin.
Both ways are legit ways to make money, but me, personally I prefer the half priced one
No, catch. Like what others have posted Google wants people using their ecosystem.
I think its great they are pricing it at cost probably, I'm sure there is profit but very little. I'm tiredof carriers and manufacturers raping customers with their crazy markups.
I've never had my phone battery go bad on me. The battery is easily accessible via 2 screws on bottom of phone, no biggie.
LTE is not really a deal breaker for me, I'm in las Vegas and get 14mbps on T-mobiles faux G.

Don't be so quick to think that way. First of all, the article's only argument is that the price is high, and it is cheaper to use Facebook and twitter from home. In addition, it even states an argument against itself (I like it because the author is not biased) which says the teen years are a memorable time and the convenient camera captures those memories.
So basically, buy a Galaxy Nexus off contract (~$270), activate it on a cheap prepaid plan, and blam! You don't even need to get data, just have him connect to WiFi.
In fact, you can even just get an unlocked Nexus S (~$130) or Galaxy S (~$100) and they should fit his needs enough.
The article pertains to on contract high end phones (specifically an iPhone 5), but you can greatly reduce the price by buying a previous flagship and use a prepaid plan.

True but teens fall into peer pressure and the iPhone is the greatest status symbol.
It might just be cheaper to get the iPhone 5 unlocked...but $650 to fish out is a lot of money..considering you could buy a full fledged laptop in that same amount...or an HD LED TV from Sony.

Yep, so don't get him an iPhone 5. Or any iPhail for that matter.
Like I said, there's still the Galaxy Nexus which is pretty good as it is, and for your sons needs even a Galaxy S or Nexus S would be enough. Dirt cheap now that they are 2 years old, but solid performers. Plenty development, so (if it even matters to him) he will have the latest version of Android running on it.
I agree, peer pressure is definitely a factor, but getting an Android stands out among all the iPhones I see in teens' hands these days

Well, brace yourselves, here comes a 16 year olds opinion. What my dad did was get me a plan, but I had to buy the phone. It was great because it taught me some responsibility and gave me some leeway. Please don't lock your kid down from having a social life, also don't let him buy an iPhone. And yes, this nexus 4 was paid for in while by me. As where my previous 3 phones.

Although I don't condone cheating Google the answer to capital of new York is better than guessing a wrong answer because you'll know and remember rather than go on not knowing.
The other is for communication. Especially after what happened in Connecticut you child needs to call out or if they go out and get peer pressured to do something bad, they can call a friend to come or call you to pick them up before they are guilty by association.
Last reason is that bullying. We want the best phones and kid like to make fun of others who are less fortunate then they are. When you get older you view being bullying differently but could be devastating for a teen who hasn't experienced the adult world.
Smartphone for teen. Lab top or PC. Yes
Tablet and brand new car. Get a job!

The Nexus S is not going to get the Key Lime Pie update...
Without updates, its going to go out of style very fast. Galaxy Nexus is still a solid buy
Buddy you'll be shocked that lots of decent developers here on xda-developers are teen. I myself started symbian development at the age of 17. So I think it's best not to generalize teens.
I had to pay for my first smartphone and Plan. The only thing I had was a "dumb phone" and it was for 911 only. So any teen who thinks getting a smartphone is in the bill of rights, need's to get a job. ( If want to give them one as a gift, because they did well or what ever ok.) But Don't make them think for one sec it's a right to have a free smartphone+plan.
That's all I have to say.
If they work for it that is great, but if a teenager wants something enough they can make money to get it

Learn the magic of ROMs, boy. The Nexus S didn't even get the 4.2 update, but voila! A few days after the N4 was released, 4.2 ROM!
Also, if your kid isn't really like the teens on xda, he probably won't know or care about software updates.

As a 15 year old teen, I'd say that, by a side, it does indeed can get in the way of school. Sometimes I get distracted with it instead of studing (at home). But, on another side, I see it as my tool to do a lot of things during my day. I listen to music with it, I often access my school website for grading check (hard to explain my school grade method) during classes with data (no WiFi access to students), I write all my tests, control my classes with it, takes notes, be related to school or not, it's also my communtication tool. And many other things not mentioned...

I agree with you completely mate. It teaches teens about financial responsibility. It also shows them that they are not entitled to a smartphone but rather something that is earned.
Good luck mate

Tell your son that. Let him choose the plan and the phone as long as he pays for it. You will have to make sure he doesn't get some crap China phone that'll break in a day, but otherwise it's all up to him to find the best deals etc.
Good luck to you, lol aren't you the OP who are you saying good luck to

Exactly. A phone basically should have thing in mine, to get in contact with some1 when they are doing a lot of work. Something was when I first got a job, my parents got me a phone so I could makes calls when I wasn't in school.
Since upgrading to a smartphone, its more than just a phone, you can access the internet with it and it can be a huge distraction, but its so much better then most phones out there.
To give your son a smartphone is a big resposibility, but something I learned is you gotta work to earn it, cant just give it for no work. f he has good grades and shows responsibility with it, then he deserves it. If he starts to show hes slacking behind, then its trouble

Dam.
You must not take a lot of notes cause I am sure you could write much faster than typing on that tiny keyboard.
I bought my teenage daughter a cheap laptop. Put k9 browser on it, an old refurbed iPod 2nd Gen and locked the iTunes store and safari, and then put k9 on it too. She has a dumb phone to call in emergencies and text her friends with. The locks at 8pm and if I see that her grades are slipping the phone and iPod become mine again. If I see she is spending all her time in front of a TV or computer theybget turned off and she goes outside.
That being said she is in Beta club. Gets A's and B's and has as much of a social life as she needs. She also won her class's physical fitness award. The place I spoil her is I let her do some name brand shopping for clothes. As long as I approve.
All in all we have our disagreements but she "gets by" lol.

You actually manage her social life? That's not something I would really look over, unless I know she's with gangsters or drug dealers or whatever. Getting a tad personal there.
(Likewise, I don't look at my son's texts unless I suspect something)

For the life of me, I cannot figure out why Google and Samsung seemingly refuse to develop a competent and attractive keyboard solution. Especially with the Microsoft Surface Touch and Type covers selling so well with the actual Surface. The Nexus 10 has such an ideal connector in the pogo pins, and creating a keyboard dock with a hinge could not possibly involve heavy R&D costs. The market is clearly there. I would love to see a third party maker, like the creators of the ClamCase for the iPad, come up with a solution. The new ClamCase Pro is absolutely beautiful and greatly increases the productivity potential of the iPad. I'd buy one for the Nexus 10 in a heartbeat. I suppose I should not be surprised as we have yet to see an official pogo charger, although the one I bought works rather well, from either Samsung or Google. Both are doing a horrendous job of supporting a flagship tablet.
That was the rant portion of this post, my apologies.
I'm very curious to see what the best solutions everyone has come up with. Yes, I have perused all the other threads regarding the topic, and I've found the answers and workarounds less than appealing. So unless Google and Samsung miraculously come to their senses and release an accessory that should have been available 3 months ago, I'm hoping that one of the brilliant minds on here will spark some hope or joy into my search. So if you don't mind, please share your ideas, opinions, and possible solutions that I may be able to try out and attempt to assuage my growing frustration.
I just hook up a Bluetooth keyboard and put the tablet on a stand.
From a business standpoint, it's a waste of good R&D money to try to develop an integrated keyboard solution for a tablet. Nexus devices always have vestigial ports and plugs, and this is just due to Google's lazy practice of axing a particular feature over cost concerns, and then they just ask the hardware manufacturer to leave the remnants of it in rather than spend more money revising the design.
People that really need keyboards and mice will already have a preferred Bluetooth or OTG USB solution, meanwhile the OS itself doesn't require nor is it designed around those input devices. Personally I find it annoying and slow to use the OS with a mouse and keyboard, and only use the keyboard if I have a table nearby and need to type for extended periods of time. If such an occasion wasn't so rare, I probably would have bought an actual laptop or Chromebook instead.
Microsoft makes a point of marketing the Surface as more of a business device, but the RT still fell flat in that regard (wtf no Active Directory integration?), and the Pro is obscenely expensive for a device that doesn't offer any additional business features that can't be accomplished by a cheaper Windows 8 laptop. Keyboards and mice on tablets are niche features, and most people balked at the fact that a touch cover for the Surface RT costs an extra $100, which was also a pretty terrible keyboard overall. Google wasn't ready to make the same mistake, because historically Samsung charges obscene amounts of money for their accessories as well.
If given the choice between a $30 Motorola Bluetooth keyboard that requires its own batteries, or a $70-$100 Samsung keyboard that hooks into the pogo pins, I'd prefer the $30 option. I use my tablet like a tablet, and use a desktop or laptop when I need to do actual work. Trying to shoehorn my tablet into being a laptop replacement often ends in failure and disappointment, so I just accepted its limitations and moved on.
i've just ordered this keyboard. looks nice.

Interesting. Looks identical to the Minisuit Case I order a couple weeks ago that is still on preorder:

Maybe it's time to cancel that order and go with Amazon.

I don't know if that would make a difference. I ordered mine a couple days ago and Amazon estimates three to six weeks for delivery. I will let you know if I get it sooner.

Thanks. I didn't cancel and will also keep you posted.
I see now that minisuit has changed the picture to the black one - it was originally the brushed aluminum - so this should be a fun wait and see experience.
I received an email today saying they are out of the black ones until next weekend if I want to wait or they can send me a silver now. Either way they're offering a 20% refund for the inconvenience. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet. I wanted the black one.

I noticed from the pictures that this clam-shell keyboard and the other 2 i found on amazon all have a big piece of plastic that sticks out right in front of the space-bar key... i suppose its necessary for it to close properly with the N10....
When anyone gets it, please let us know if it get on the way of typing normally!
Thanks!
So any reviews?
Yeah I have been watching these keyboards as well. I love how they snap onto the nexus to protect it.

As soon as I have it I'll post some photos and a review.
