[Q] Super Noob; Help wanted :( - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I recieved a T-mobile G1 recently, and I wasnt satisfied with the stock rom. Before this phone, I had an htc aria and on this same site I was able to install the cyanogen rom on it, more or less with ease, but even with following all the guides on the forums, I havnt been able to flash a custom onto the phone.
Here what I have done so far:
I got the phone with the DMD64 build version so using the wiki I was able to get it to rc28 (or 29 im not sure I dont remember)
Then following this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480 I think I rooted the phone along with installing the hardspl and update.zip
after I did that i flashed this rom? http://andblogs.net/2009/01/jesusfrekes-14-images-are-out/
After that, I downloaded cyanogen magpie cm7, renamed it to update.zip and tried to flash it, but on the recovery menu it said it could find the install script.
right now heres the info on the phone:
Firmware: 1.0
baseband: 62.33.20.08u_1.22.12.29
kernal:
2.6.25-01843-gfea26b0 [email protected] #1
build number:
kila_uk-user 1.0 tc5-rc8 116470 ota-rel-keys,release-keys
If some one could tell me how to flash the custom rom and what the radio stuff means or if you could just send me to a forum with everything already answered for me that would be greatly appreciated
(I've used the search bar and everything )

Please assist with Firmware upgrade

Hi Guys,
I am a HTC Dream user (it shows T-Mobile but I live in Australia)
Firmware 1.5
Kernel version:
2.6.27-00392-g8312baf
[email protected]#2
I am thinking about to upgrade my firmware, since sometimes my phone will freeze and my browser doesnt work properly,
any suggestion of which ROM(that works best with Dream, with ROOT access)?
I need a step-by-step instruction to update my firmware since i am not that technical,
thanks,

Cyanogen has a pretty good ROM
Install instructions are here (they are different from other ROM's)
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Upgrading_From_Older_CyanogenMod_or_other_rooted_ROMs
Dwang is also a good ROM thats almost stock Android. All you have to do is download his .zip to the root of your SDcard (not in any folder) and rename it to update.zip (make sure it doesnt become update.zip.zip)
boot holding Home+power
(if you dont see any text) Alt+L
Alt+s
(when its done) Home + back
I actually tried to do this, since it seemed simple, and it said Signature blah blah, verification failed?

You probably need to flash a new recovery...because all the downloads are properly signed.

URGENT ATT Captivate Rogers Help ROM

I posted in another section but there were no replies. Here's another one: (Sorry)
Hi, I bought my Samsung Captivate in December from Rogers Canada and I decided to flash to Att Froyo 2.2 since I wanted the latest version.
Unfortunately, because I'm a dumb noob, I can't seem to root, uninstall any Att crap, or do anything. I've tried doing the root applications, but it doesnt work (gives error message on Download mode).
I really want to take advantage of my phone (hoping not to make stupid mistakes again) so it would be awesome if someone could show me how to downgrade back to Rogers 2.1, remove the ATT startup screen and upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3, step by step. This would be very appreciated.
I've left my number 7789987933 just in case if this is too complex. Thanks

based on your post you dont want gingerbread yet, trust me on that. you should probably use kies to upgrade to the rogers froyo. or flash a custom rom that already has root and busybox and various tweeks. im using andromeda from the armani captivate rom, it's a bit of a memory hog but has all the touchwiz features working like the music player in the notification bar and lock screen and the battery life is amazing.
im not totally familiar with rooting the rogers version or flashing it to stock roger but im pretty sure root doesn't involve download mode. if you do get it rooted you can flash a kernel with cwm recovery and flash a custom rom.
No, download mode should only be used if you're flashing back to a stock rom (such as the I897UCJF6).
The best idea for you to do right now is to run the 'One click root' application that TGA_Gunnman has made.
I'll give you the steps here:
1. Download this.
2. Also install this.
3. Make sure your phone is on USB Debug mode: (MENU > Settings > Applications > Developement > USB debugging = Checked )
4. For Windows x86 and x64 systems make sure that the Samsung Drivers are installed....
If you use a 64-bit Windows, install this.
If you use a 32-bit Windows, install this instead.
5. Extract the contents of GalaxyS_One-Click_Root_All_Models.rar to a folder.
6. Connect your phone to your PC via the USB cable and launch the file "Galaxy_One-Click_Root.exe" file.
7. Click the "One-Click Root" button. This will launch a command shell follow the instructions in the CMD window, and MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW THESE STEPS CAREFULLY.
If you really do need any further help, just send me a PM... Or alternatively follow the main topic here.
first off, ATT 2.2 hasnt been released yet for captivate (supposedly later today) dont know how you flased it (supposedly). Rogers in canada released it Jan 6. you should have flashed that (rogers boy) if you were going to do stock roms. but you are flasing anyway.. there are plenty of custom roms that are stripped down stock (no bloat just like you were trying to do), or tweaked up. shoulda flashed one of them.
and the only gingerbread roms for captivate are "look a-like" not real 2.3 dont bother.
so, you obviously didnt read enough first but here.....
heres some stuff to get you back

[Q] Finding and Installing Android 2.2

Can anyone provide me a link or hook me up with the update file for Android 2.2 OS? I've searched and have not been able to find it... and Google doesn't seem to make it available.
Gingerbread is glitchy on my phone and rooting it has not resolved the issues (camera won't work, black screen locks me out of phone randomly or post phone call), so I would like to revert back to Froyo 2.2 to see if that fixes everything as I'm fairly confident, I didn't have these issues while running 2.2
Below are the details of my phone and what I'm currently running. Would I have to wipe the phone, install 2.2 then flash cynogen 7 again or can I manually install 2.2 and Cynogen will remain intact?
I just really need to find the Androis 2.2 OS file.
I appreciate the help.
Thank you in advance

How about looking in the wiki, under ROMs?
also arent the stock ROMs available in ROM manager? i believe they are, so just load up stock 2.2 from there. if not, cyan 6.1.1 is in ROM manager, and it was the epitome of froyo stability smoothness with tons of features on top of it.

SGS I9000 - Help for flashing

Hi everyone!
I have a SGS (GT-I9000) that I would like to flash with cyanogenmod7. But despite having read quite a lot of stuff about flashing and so on the internet, I have to admit I am a noob, this is why I would need some advice
I had the phone with 2.2.1. I rooted it with the one click utility and unlocked it with the market app few months ago.
Then I flashed it with Darky's 9.5. After a while, I decided to upgrade it with darky's 10 rc6 but something went wrong (and I have no idea what it could be). Honestly, it has been a while now and I could not say what exactly happened, I can just tell you what I can read on my phone:
Firmware version:
2.3.3
Baseband:
I9000XXJVK
Kernel Version:
2.6.35.7-I9000XWJVB-CL118186
[email protected] #Dark_Core_2.0
Build number:
FICETO.GINGERBREAD.XWJVB
I noticed something which I think is curious. I just intalled Kies in order to get the drivers for the phone, and I received a message:
A new firmware version is available...
current version: PDA:JVB / PHONE:JVK / CSC:JV3
(NEE)
latest firmware version: PDA:JVH / PHONE:JVO / CSC:JV3
(NEE)
But I always thought that when you flashed a custom rom, Kies could not update your phone anymore ?
So do you think that I can just flash the rom in recovery following the guide on cyanogenmod's wiki or should I revert back to stock ?
Thank you for your attention.
Just flash cm. Backup your application with TB, factory reset and follow flashing guide.
If you encounter any problems, you can always flash to stock then.

Cannot enter CWM recovery although it's flashed

Hi guys,
First of all, I apologize in advance if this isn't the correct place and/or thread title for my question. I've rarely posted in this forum as I'm usually able to find what I'm looking for.
I'll try to describe the issue fully so bear with me. If you're not patient, skip the next two paragraphs and go to the problem.
I bought my Galaxy S more than two years ago; back then it had Android 2.1 and I believe I also flashed to 2.1.1 via Samsung Kies.
I later flashed Froyo via Odin, rooted with 1ClickLagFix and installed a ton of apps. I haven't updated anything for more than a year, perhaps year and a half. I recently uninstalled many applications I wasn't using, including the lag fix, unrooted and began preparing to flash something newer. I didn't have the time though, so I dropped the project, and besides, the phone is working much smoother without all the unnecessary crap I had before.
Yesterday I decided to finish the job and flash DarkyROM 11 Black Edition. I rooted the phone again using Z4root, installed CWM ROM Manager and flashed CW recovery. I need the recovery in order to flash CM9 and then the ROM per the installation instructions for DarkyROM.
At this point I might as well wait for v.12, but I'll still need the CW recovery I guess. Or I may flash v.11 as planned; I still haven't decided.
The problem: CW recovery is flashed, but when I reboot I go to 3e recovery instead (tried with the 3 buttons or boot to recovery from ROM Manager, same result). I then copied the CW recovery file directly on the SD card and renamed it update.zip (it was recovery-update.zip) and tried to apply it. Didn't work. As far as I remember it said it couldn't verify file integrity or something. I can check for sure if you'd like.
Here's what I'm running (I'll put what I see, let me know if you need more):
GT-I9000
Firmware: 2.2
Baseband version: I9000XXJPP
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9
[email protected] #1
Build number: FROYO.XFJP7
ROM Manager (installed v. 5.5.1.4 yesterday) says current recovery is ClockworkMod 2.5.1.2.
I'd appreciate any insight. I don't have much experience flashing my phone, so if you have a solution, it would be best to include not only links to relevant threads but also an explanation as to what steps I should follow in my specific case.
Thanks in advance!

Can't do... Kies cannot upgrade the firmware since I'm on a custom ROM (or because it didn't match my country, I don't quite remember the reason).
I was following the installation instructions for DarkyROM for Froyo; it says I should have it rooted with CWM and use the recovery to flash CM9 and the ROM itself afterwards, so I believe Froyo isn't the issue. The kernel perhaps? Have no idea, I'm a novice more or less. I do know how to follow instructions though, so I'm not a complete idiot
Besides geting a newer ROM with newer Adnroid version I'd also like to clean up the mess I've been creating for the past year and a half. Maybe flashing a stock ROM and then DarkyROM would be easier. I'm looking for the most time-efficient method.
