Rooted Dell Streak 7 T-mobile with gingerbreak - Dell Streak 7

XDA love your site. I have learned so much. With that said I gave a stab at rooting my DS7 with gingerbreak which is found on your forum. It worked easily and quckly. I simply installed gingerbreak.zip to root sd card. Installed on the DS7. Plugged in the DS7 Via usb cable and clicked on the installed icon on the tab. Boom in 30seconds I was rooted. Just thought I would throw this in. In no way am I a developer. I consider myself a semi newbie. If this is allowed here. Thanks . If not excuse the placement. Just wanted to try to give back somthing for all of your amazing posts and work. Enjoy... Mops

I'm new to DS7 and afraid to brick my tablet. Can you elaborate what have you done?
1. Download Gingerbreak.zip to a formatted external SD card? Or you extracted to external SD card? I'm confused: ' I simply installed gingerbreak.zip to root sd card'
2. Installed on DS7. What does this mean?
3. Plugged in the DS7 Via usb cable and clicked on the installed icon on the tab. Where is the 'installed icon'? Are you using Windows XP or Windows 7?
Thanks for clarification

1. Download Gingerbreak version 1.2 from this link to your ds7 and take note where you download it to. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
2. Install File Expert, a free file manager app from the android market.
3. Go into your Settings, Applications, and check the Unknown sources option (this allow you to install non-market app)
4. Go into your Settings, Applications, Development, and check the USB debugging.
5. Start File Expert and navigate to the folder where you have downloaded Gingerbreak.
6. Click on Gingerbreak to install it.
7. Start Gingerbreak app and choose Root device.
That's it, very simple. Happy rooting!
And by the way, good to meet a fellow Viet on XDA.

Cam on bro.

I tried to dl gingerbreak v1.2 to my ds7 but got error message 'not compatible with device'. Do I have to download to my computer and copy it to my ds7?

[Q] How to install apks?

Hi,
I'm unable to install sideloaded APKs. This is what I did:
1. Ran the 'NookColor Tools'; checked 'Allow Non-Market Apps'; and rebooted.
2. Copied the apk to SD card (in a new folder My Files > 'Apps').
3. Installed Astro File Manager from the Market.
4. Navigated to the location of the APK; clicked on it; selected 'Open App Manager'.
5. Clicked 'Install'.
Says 'Install Blocked - Installation of downloaded apks is not supported'
I must be doing something wrong, any help would be great!
Thanks
Try unchecking the box for Allow Non-Market Install, reboot, check box, reboot, should work now. I had to do that after autonootering.
Good luck!

I'm unable to uncheck that either. After unchecking, if I re-open NookColor tools either instantly or after rebooting, it remains checked! But still, apps won't install.
I'm in the same boat .. no matter what i can't get that box to stay unchecked
I had the same problem, try unchecking, rebooting, I think it will be checked again then when it reboots just uncheck and recheck it (no reboot). That worked for me. I'm glad too cuz I though I was going to have to go through all that adb bs lol.

I don't know why this worked but i successfully installed the latest market app from my sd card using the above mentioned process. Firmware is 1.0.1 autonootered. Thanks for the help!

no you can follow tut here and adb via usb

video tut here go near the end after he roots nc

or us a file manager astro or file manager of your choice i believe
I had similar issues after using autonooter from 12/25. After playing with nook tools I gave up unsuccessfully. After a reboot I noticed it was working. For the life of me I can not figure out if the reboot did it or something else but it is working now. I was ready to go back to the old method of manually editing the database using adb.

You shouldn't, I've rebooted a few times and have had no problems.
Here's what i've done to get around this.
Appmonster on my phone. Download and backup the app on my phone.
copy the app onto nook somehow, i use dropbox.
then i use rootexplorer to copy, change from r/o to r/w, paste the apk, and then install it.
So far working well, trillian, amazon, and google reader. Not sure about the potential of installing versions of apps that could brick or screw up the nook.
Laptop not Recognizing Nook after installing ADB
I tried the boot over and over, but it did not work. So I followed the instructions on installing SDK and ADB and was able to install applications. This meant replacing the Nook Driver. I was not able to install the files via the USB cable, but used ADB wireless instead.
Now I can no longer see the Nook when I connect it by USB to my laptop, running Windows 7. I used to see the Nook as my J drive and the SD Card as the K.
I plugged it into my Desktop and and able to see both.
I am guessing this has something to do with the Driver on the Laptop (which I replaced following the instructions in the video). Is there a way that I can get my laptop to see the Nook and the SD card again without losing the ability to install files?
Thanks

[Q] Installing Non-Market .apk files?

I have an AT&T SGT. I've been using the beta version of VPlayer from the market. VPlayer is a great app but when I purchased it for $.99 through paypal for the unlocker, the download failed. I emailed Vplayer and they sent me an .apk file for the unlocker but I can't install it.
I've "googled" and got this.
"Download apps for Samsung Galaxy Tab from outside the Android Market
Android apps come in the form of APK files. You can use Google to find free APK files for your Galaxy Tab, then install them using the steps below.
Note: This method should probably only be used by techies or people who really know what they are doing. Installing APK files from some sites can compromise the security of your device.
1. Open Settings.
2. Select Applications.
3. Check Unknown sources to enable app installs from outside of the Android Market.
4. Open Android Market and download and install Astro File Manager.
5. If you used your computer to download the APK file, mount the Galaxy Tab to your computer and copy the APK file to the device. If you used the Browser on the Galaxy Tab, the file should be saved to the device.
6. Open Astro File Manager.
7. Navigate to the APK file location. Tap it and select Open App Manager.
8. Tap Install.
9. Tap Install again"
But my problem is that I cannot comply with step 3. It doesn't give me that option.
I've copied the apk file to my sdcard and installed Easy Installer App from the market to help install it. The Easy Installer App sees the apk file but when I click to install it, it shows:
" FOR SECURITY, YOUR PHONE IS SET TO BLOCK INSTALLATION OF APPLICATIONS NOT OBTAINED FROM ANDROID MARKET."
It give me the option to click the setting button but I can't find the menu to allow installation of non-market apk files.
Thanks for the help.
I don't have the link handy but search SuperOneClickv1.5.5-ShortFuse either in here or Google. Once you've downloaded the file and extract it, click the SuperOneClick.exe file and finally click allow non market apps. I highly suggest rooting your phone first to make it work. I'm sure there's an easier way but since no one has replied to you yet, I'm hoping this could get you started.

I've installed superoneclick on my windows 7 laptop. THe program runs but when I click allow non-market apps it freezes when it's "waiting for device".
My galaxy tab is already rooted via z4root. I've also unrooted it and trying to root it through superoneclick but it still has the same freezing problem and I have to force to close.
make sure your usb connection is set to debugging then run it again. see if that works.

Thanks for the quick reply rush_exmachina. I've tried the debugging mode already. I also tried: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
"If you're having issues with "wait for device" or if RATC is looping, try this
Unplug your USB Cable
Go to Settings > Applications > Development
Uncheck USB Debugging
Plug in your USB Cable
Unplug your USB Cable
Check USB Debugging
Plug in your USB Cable"
Still no success. I've searched the forums a bit, some SGT owners were successfull with superoneclick and some were not.
no prob. I'm fairly new to the android world myself. I've exhausted everything I know on top of my head but I'll search the forums with you and post whatever I could find here.
Sounds like you may not have the correct USB drivers installed. To test this open a command prompt on your windows computer. Navigate to the same directory you have SuperOneclick installed. In that directory you will see an executable named adb.exe In the command prompt, type adb devices. It should return with a serial number. If not, it can not communicate with your tab. In this case you will need to install the correct Samsung drivers for it to work. Also, as already mentioned, make sure USB Debugging is turned on.
First my english no too good, sorry if don't understand me,i well try,i had this same problem really I could not even root using z4 root since it's not on market no more, well I rooted using superonclick,i did successfully, still my problem about installing apps out of the market....well I did click the install non market apps, and have ther same errors like you then I realized I need give superuser permission so my advice is make sure you give SU permission(this is on your tab, I'm assuming us rooted with su installed) I hope you understood (i said for my english) if not I'm sure somebody here can explain better

Thanks for the reply guys. I will try the command promp method when I get home from work. See if I can get somewhere with that.
As far as permissions I have my SGT rooted via z4root. I went to the superuser app to give permissions...but I don't know enough to do anything with it. I tried adding apps to set permissions but I could not choose anything.
I installed ASTRO app... It looked promising but at the and my SGT still says it's setup to blocking non-market apps. To me that means there should be a setup menu to unblock it.
Thanks again for the help.

Not on the AT&T version as they specifically block that out. The only method to add it is either via SuperOneClick or modifying the settings file directly. SuperOneClick is the easiest method though as editing the file requires Root Explorer and potential for messing something else up in the file.
FINALLY SUCCESSFULL!! I downloaded and installed my SGT drivers from here.http://samsung-phones-apps.com/samsung-galaxy-tab-usb-driver.html
I also found http://www.androidcentral.com/sideload-android-apps-all-you-want-sideload-wonder-machine
I downloaded from both links and followed the directions and it worked like a champ.
Also make sure your SGT is rooted and USB Debugging is enabled like the guys above are saying.
Thanks Rush_exMachina, cbb77 and denpad2010 for your help.
so is this the only way to accomplish this? i'm trying to install non market apps on my att tab. this way works but it is such a hassle
Setting - Security
1. Open Settings.
2. Select Applications. Select Security instead of Application
3. Check Unknown sources to enable app installs from outside of the Android Market.

How to install apps from computer?

Is there anyway to download and install games/apps from the computer? Can I go into CWM - Mount USB - and then create a folder in my Gtablet and put all my apk files in that folder and then somehow install them once booted into my tablet?
I have never used android before so please forgive my ignorance... I just just flashed Clock Work Mod via NVFlash so I am still learning. I would like to install PSX4Droid and Final Fantasy 7 among other games.
Thank you for your time.

if they are android files (which, by apk, I assume they are), then yes. Just put them in a folder, use a file explorer to browse to them and open them, and they should install. Of course, installing is no guarantee that they will work on the gTab.
Also note that if you load an app that does not appear in your market, you will not be able to get updates to the app via the market.
You should have a folder called download in the root, use that for consistency.
However, I have found the easiest way is to email them to yourself at the gmail address you use on the tab.
The regular gmail reader provides for installing the APK from inside the message (just click Install!).
Works every time.
(Plus this gives you a backup copy of the app to install from anywhere you have web.)
The easiest way is to place them on a usb flash drive & use a file explorer (i.e root explorer) to install them.
I also want to mention that the new web-based Market will install the programs onto the tab for you when you click to install them from the PC.
No muss, no fuss. I was pretty surprised when I discovered it accidentally.

New to the scene

hi guys, so as the title states, i'm new to the droid scene and i have a streak 7. i have been reading for a few days now and want to root my streak. i am unsure about how to do this, i have seen gingerbreak and superoneclick. based on the fact that i dont know crap, which would you guys recommend? i have some other issues that concern me. maybe some of those fixed would be a good start?
issues:
1. i cant seem to connect my streak to my pc, running windows vista
2. i have no idea what all these acronyms mean?
3. i dont know what ROM to use, hell i dont know what a good ROM is
4. i cant connect my streak and my iphone via wifi
maybe some one can pint me to a basic, newb users guide would be good also. if some one is willing to help me, i'd appreciate it! sorry if this is the wrong spot
hello and welcome
1) did you install the dell drivers?
2) which acronyms are you referring to?
3) rom flavor depends on your needs... streakdroid is awesome but has bluetooth issues...on the flip side......is is overclockable. Im using custom 2.2 ...I need bluetooth sadly and can't sacrifice it for an overclockable kernel.
4)you need to modify the wpa supplicant file in order to tether via adhoc ( device to device )
Steps on how are in the forum.im typing via my ds7 ....otherwise id look it up for you. Its easy to find though.
Hope that helps!!!

Thanks for your reply. Here is what I found:
1. The drivers I found won't work with vista but I was directed to another method I hope works
2. All the "apk, rom, wpa" stuff like that. I mean I figured out a rom is what you use as a front end of sorts
3. I don't need overclocking, don't need speed at all as it's just going in my truck as an audio source, gps, video player, Internet thing.
4. I'll use your post to search this method out. Might need some help. I'm assuming I need to have the devise rooted first?
On a rooting note, what's the best, easiest method for a newb such as myself? I am on 2.2.2 and it's a t-mobile streak 7.
Again thanks for your help.
With 2.2.2 use gingerbreak. Its one button and your rooted.

ok so i rooted my streak 7 tonight. wasnt so bad i used gingerbreak.
now i need to modify the supplicant file in order to tether my iphone to my streak via wifi. i found all the info and the files, but i dont know how to "flash the zip in recovery" i read through some 16 pages and still cant figure it out. can any one point me to a step by step on how to apply the patch? or just write it out step by step? i am getting the hang of this stuff but i dont know enough and dont want to mess up my streak and not be able to use it all via wifi.
thank you again guys, you are a big help to a newb
ok i think i figured out how to do it:
1: changed zip file name to update.zip
2. moved to sd card
3. opened up clockwork recovery
4. ran rom up date of said zip file
5. asked to make back up
6. rebooted in recovery mode
7. dont know if it worked??
8. still wont see my iphone using mywi for tethering
again any help would be great guys. thanks

You don't need to do any of that....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970219
You are rooted. All you have to do is use any file explorer which allows writing to root and copy this file to /system/ bin (back up your old one by renaming it to wpa_supplicant.old first. Restart wifi by going into settings and uncheck / recheck the box. You can now tether
The file is a zip. Extract the wpa_supplicant file from it and copy......not the whole zip itself...just the extracted file

Wow and I thought about copying the files. But I kept reading about "running" a patch, so I thought I had to let the script do something. Thank you very much for your link! I will try it hopefully tonight when I get home from working.
ok i am trying what you posted pyraxiate, but i cant seems to rename the files? i have tried both es file explorer and android file explorer.
ok i dont think my root went through. i re-read that the gingerbreak has to be on the devise and i had it on the sd card. problem is i cant get the gingerbreak apk to the eternal memory of the devise. my computer is only 32 bit and the adb files wont work on 32 bit, only 64 bit. so it seems i am stuck until i find a computer with an OS other than vista! damn it, unless some one has solution guess i am stuck unrooted for now
Do yourself a favor and use the super1click via tether to a laptop. Its easy. Install the drivers they give. Also I bought root explorer. Well worth it!
Also you can use the xp32 bit driver. It worked for me.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=939921
That's how I did mine
If you have the gingerbreak.apk on the SD card use a file manager and install it. Then open in in the app drawer and click root. The device will reboot if it worked. Might take a few minutes and look like it froze.

Thing is I emailed it to myself and it still saved it to the sd card part, even though I removed my sd card?? I did the gingerbreak and it did reboot, I also did the clockwork recovery. I still don't know if it worked? Seems as though I try and rename the wpa files and I'm not allowed, does this mean that it isn't rooted?

I know es file explorer wont work for root. You need a root file explorer. Also, it would be a good idea to download a rom ( either streakdroid or custom 2.2.2), put it on the internal storage, and try booting into cwr to flash it. You boot cwr by powering the streak off first. Hold volume up in and push / hold power. You will get a recovery boot menu. From there choose update from zip ( this is where cwr is) and cwr should boot. From there follow guides to wipe data / cache / delvik and then go to install a file from zip. Choose the rom zip ...sit back...and relax as it flashes to a fully rooted rom
Hope that helps!!
