[Q] Issue with using AutoNooter to root virgin NookColor

I seem to be having an issue that I can't find a solution for. I have followed the directions in this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=942424) to the letter, but when I get to the point where I have to turn off the Nook, put the uSD card with the AN image on it into the Nook, and then plug the Nook into my computer, my Nook simply boots up normally, and is in USB connected mode when it starts up. It never boots into Android. It just boots into stock unrooted Nook UI.
However, it does do something strange. Whenever I try to boot from the AutoNooter uSD card, when I unlock the screen for the first time, it is in USB mode (with the screen saying "You may now safely transfer files to your NookColor..."), and it keeps dropping the connection sporadically. The "You may now safely transfer..." screen goes away for a split second, and then it comes back almost right away, making the noise it makes when you connect your Nook to a computer via USB. This only happens when I boot using the AutoNooter imaged uSD card by plugging in the USB cable.
Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

Sounds like your Nook doesn't recognize your uSD card as bootable. If you have another uSD card handy, write the AutoNooter image to that one.
Otherwise, try unmounting and formatting the uSD on the Nook itself. Then make sure your Nook can access it using the built-in file browser in the Library app. If that's all good, power down your Nook and pop out the uSD card and re-write the AutoNooter image to the uSD. Hopefully, your Nook will boot off it this time.

I've tried another older 1gb uSD card I had lying around, and that one didn't work either. I bought another 8gb class 4 card that I will try.
I did format the 16gb card I was using from the Nook, and put some pictures and mp3s on it to test to make sure it was not a bad card. The Nook was able to see those, but like you said, it doesn't seem like it recognizes the uSD with the AutoNooter image as bootable.

That is weird. Have you tried any other bootable images? If not, try the Monster RootPack. That should boot you into Clockwork Recovery but don't do anything in there. If you can't even boot off of that image, I would have to say that there is something about how you are writing the images to the uSD that is the problem.

I have a bad NC USB cable that causes the appearing/disappearing act within Windows. Just for giggles, when booting w/o the uSD card installed, wait until it gets to the home screen. Connect to your computer. If the mounts properly, carefully flex the USB cable connector at the NC end. If you start getting weirdness, then you either have a bad cable or the NC's USB connector has gone a bit wonky.

Finally got it working. Apparently, creating the image using the built-in SD card reader in my laptop was messing something up. I used an external one that my wife has lying around, and it worked the first time.

Running CM7 off SD -- How do I install videos?

I'm running CM7 stable 7.0.3 off an SD card. I would like to put videos on my NC, but the only way I know how is to shut down, remove the card, reboot back to stock, hook my NC up to my computer, and load the video into the video folder in My Files.
Is there an easier way to get videos into my Nook?

Why can't you just plug the USB cable/charger cable into your computer and click on the "mount USB" option? You won't be able to use the programs and stuff, but it should mount, right?
If not that, you can download a program called "Samba Network File Share" that will allow you to connect to it over a wireless network. I've used this before, but it is painfully slow. Took about 10 minutes to move a 500mb video file.

Another option I like and use a lot is SwiFTP, free in the market:

Fire it up and use any FTP client software on your computer. Transfer speeds are a bit slower than USB but not bad. Don't forget to turn off the FTP server when you are finished!

I have no idea what OS your computer is running, but my preferred option is using scp on the command line.

Just plug your Nook into your PC and in the Notifications should be "USB Connected". Just tap that and you should have a USB Mount option.
If that doesn't work here's an App someone on XDA made for the Nook. Use it to Mount the Nook's "Media" partition and the SD's 4th partition.

Question re: Bootable CM7 card - can I drag a data file onto Micro-SD card?

I got a NC up and running CM7 of Micro SD card - followed the directions on the Mega thread to get er done.
Everything's worked great so far - using Amazon app store. But I wanted to try out a pdf reader - and my PC won't recognize my device via USB cable. So I pulled out formatted card - and saw it was mostly empty - so I dragged and dropped a .pdf document onto the MicroSD via card reader.
Logged onto my NC to grab a pdf reader to see if the file transferred - and now my Amazon App store says there are no apps compatible with my device. Everything I have on there - works fine - I just can't add any new Apps via Amazon. Is that because I clicked and dragged. I even deleted .pdf file and Amazon app store still isn't working. Perhaps Amazon is just having a technical glitch - I can always double check tomorrow a.m.
I can always start over - as I'm a greenhorn - but figured I'd try and learn something in the process...
* So - did I do a ( no-no ) with my drag and drop data file onto uSD card.
* What's the best way to transfer files from PC to NC device. I'm thinking of trying bluetooth next - if that's a good route - or is there a better way to do it < as I'd have to get a BT dongle to test out that >

If you followed verygreen's SD card install of CM7, you should be able to simply plug the NC into your computer via the stock USB cable. For me when I did this last night I saw two removable drive devices show up on the computer immediately.
Once connected, open your notification bar and say yes to enable USB mode. After you've done this, give it a minute and the removable drives on the computer should refresh and have actual names like MyNookColor and CM7 SDCard. Try opening them up.
I used the CM7 SDCard drive and went into the downloads folder and created subdirectories for music, videos, etc. You should now be able to drag n drop PDFs from the computer to the drive. When you're all done, very important... Right-click on both devices and eject the drive. After you've ejected, do safely remove, but do NOT disconnect the cable yet. After Windows says it's safe, I went back to the NC and turned off USB mode, THEN I disconnected the cable.
That worked for me last night, I hope it works for you.

In the user guide it states "You need a USB On-The-Go micro cable adapter to connect HTC phone and a USB storage device. HTC phone supports USB storage devices (except portable hard drives) up to 64 gb."
I have downloaded ASTRO File manager and on attaching the OTG cable to the ONE and than the 64 GB GB Flash Drive, I am unable to find the flash Drive. The drive illuminates but is not discoverable on the phone. I don't know if 64 gb is too large a flash drive, but it seems strange to state up to 64 GB if it can't take it.
Any help would be appreciated. The phone is locked to 3 and is running 4.1.2.

Are you going up to the root of the filesystem or looking in the built-in storage where DCIM, documents etc.. live? You won't find an attached drive inside your "SDCard".

I have opened Astro File Manager and am presented with the options under locations of
1, My Files
2 Scan local Networks
3 google mail
4 box
5 Drop box
6 Facebook.
7 Sky Drive
No where in any of the folders, do I find anything that resembles what appears to be a flash drive. Please advise so that I can get this to work.

I don't have astro, but best location to start would be my files, then look in the settings to see if you need to change something to allow access to the root filesystem. To be honest the easiset thing to do would be to install root explorer as it will default to top level of the filesystem. Should see a folder called something like "USB storage" there.

Use ES File Explorer much better.
All you do then is press the / button and it takes you to root of the phone and then from there you can choose sdcard.

I think the 64gb flash is formatted as exfat. try formatting it to fat32 instead.

Strange, on my ES File explorer I needed to enable "Up to root" in settings and press the folder with the up arrow on it. Can't see a / button anywhere, just in the location history.

As has already been mentioned, it has nothing to do with size, only how you've formatted it. It can read any drive that goes up to the maximum of FAT32 (2TB IIRC).

if so, go ahead and get plastic.....you don't deserve this phone.
theres an app that you get that will help mount ntfs over otg.
and yes you can mount portables.

Like skram said....there is an app in the appstore for that and it is free. you can watch full 1080p movies above 4gb with no cropping. you are looking for an excuse to go with plastic.

I have tried Paragon's NTFS driver. But two reasons I wouldn't choose it:
1. Requires rooting. I'm past the experimenting-with-my-phone stage since a long time back.
2. Doesn't work with the internal 32/64GB.
And no, I wouldn't choose Samsung. My current phone is the Sony XP, which with its aluminium body seems to be HTC's inspiration.

have you tried usb otg helper? it requires root also but looks more promising than paragon's ntfs driver.
if your no longer experimenting with mods, roms, tweaks, root, and such then why even bother checking out xda?

You mean experimentation is a must for XDA users? No other valid reasons to visit this site?
I do still experiment with ROMs. Right now I'm trying to get the newly announced JB for the SXP. But beyond loading different ROMs, I'm not interested tweaks etc.
Same issue with my SXP actually. The internal 16GB does not support >4GB files.

[HOWTO]Mount USB

People have asked since discovery of our beloved Ouya once you've got it out of the box you may have noticed that their is a USB port on the back.
After quick maintenance of my own personal testing USB will simply not run from stock.(Not that I'm fully aware of).
There are a few key ways of going about this, two ways as far as we know.
But I'm only teaching one.
First off, if you've plugged up a USB and didn't get a mount, there are a few steps to take to attempt to fix. I've got a positive affect to this, others have had different.
So let's start off first by using the ADB method of getting root a.k.a Superuser onto out device using the tut in the dev area.
Once you've accessed this, download "[root] StickMount" from the market. Assuming that this .apk can't be found on Google let's use an app to pull your .apk from the downloaded stuff you've gotten in the Google Play Store.
Now there are a few apps that do this, I used App2SD and rebuilt the .apk myself(which took a good while recoding), once you've pulled the .apk either load it tons cloud storage area you use, or side load it, you can also find a tutorial in the dev area as well.
Once you've got the app loaded make sure you set the setting properly to detect the USB you plan to use! This is key to getting something detected. From here you should be able to check in your file explorer and locate "ExternalSD" or whatever you see it fall under. If, and only if the USB doesn't show up, that may mean you've got the wrong format. I want each and all of you to give FAT32 a go as this is standard.
Warning, I don't know who all has tried this so if you're not happy with the occurrence, don't come beating my door in.
If there's anybody who ends up with a successful outcome, please leave feedback!
If nobody gets anything I'll just make sure to have this thread locked or closed.

You're doing it wrong, then. Mine mounted my fat32 USB ssd right out of the box. No extra apps or haxx needed. It mounts to /mnt/usbdisk or something along those lines.

All Ouya's should mount a harddrive with no problem. You just have to plug it in when it is off or restart using a app or the terminal. It just has to be OFF not in sleep mode.

No, there's different methods for different formats.
Terabytes won't read unless you've got a certain thing installed.

This is true, all of a sudden this week there were many people having trouble using their USB drives. Mine used to work until sometime this week. NTFS included. I was able to mount an NTFS-formatted 1TB Seagate Expansion drive earlier tonight. What I had to do was root my Ouya and use the USB OTG Helper app. I made a post on OuyaForums about it here.

I have a "2"gb, or 2,000,000,000 bytes. 1.86 real gb... anywho, its a Lexar jump drive I wanted to copy files with, and I have a single FAT32 partition and was not able to mount it simply by plugging it in. Tried rebooting, and re-plugging the device. It doesn't work. I imagine it may with stickmount.

Certain Jump drives will not mount because the USB port does not supply enough power. Powered USB drives or very efficient ones will work.

Nope. I have an 8GB usb stick and it doesn't work no matter what I do or what format I put it in. Haven't tried this method yet but what you're talking about does NOT work for everyone. And the powered 2TB external drive just causes Ouya to freeze every time at boot.

I have never seen a powered USB flash drive. Furthermore, if a flash drive isn't mounting due to the port not outputting enough power, then the drive or the mobo is broken or otherwise failing to adhere to the spec. External hard drives (spinning platters) of the type common a few years ago when flash drives were cost prohibitive generally DO require an external power source (or at least draw from 2 USB ports), but they generally aren't referred to as jump drives. In my experience (which is considerable but not infinite) most flash drive issues tend to be due to bad connections after the drive is beat up or by managing to write past the end of the drive. Flash media is generally reliable and does not draw more power than the USB port puts out by spec. I highly doubt that power supply problems are a common cause of mounting issues.

If you dont want help, that's fine with me but please don't come into my threads to tread on my method.
Firstly, I need to know!
Are you rooted or stock?
If either, have you installed Ouya Plus?
If so! Try the given method above or Google an apps that suits your needs.
We are here to help, and I'm telling you right now that this method has worked for me, and maybe other users.
FACT:
Not all Ouya have been able to read USB from start, more than others have reported having issues with USB and have had to use the root method to even get a reading.
TIP:
Wanna check and see if your device is/has been read?
Please either use FX File Manager or Astro as these are the best at the moment. Both can be found and side loaded onto the Ouya.
Once you've installed either one, go to the manager, do you see an "External Drive" or "USB Mounted Drive" on the device? You're good to go.
ADVICE:
Did this not show up for you?

how do you get apps2sd to read the external usb and not internal? the usb stick shows up but apps2sd only sees the internal

I've only heard of Apps2SD working with ROOTed Ouyas only.
If you can't find the solution here, go and check the official forums, there are some people there who helped me.

Once downloaded. go to "Manage" "Advanced" "Storage" and open up downloads. select the "ESFileExplorer.apk" app you just downloaded and head back to the main menu.
"Make" Software" and next to the browser you should see the app icon for the ES File Manager.
in the file manager that has the default start page in your internal SD card storage. Just select your "USB Storage" instead of "SD card"
installing something like StickMount and needing superuser privileges is totally overkill for just accessing external storage.
if the root and stickmount way works for 1000 GB+ storage sizes i have no idea. However i don't see how it should affect external storage size

Mine wouldn't work right out of the box. I turned it on and set it up. Plugged in my 2.5" spare laptop USB 3.0 HDD. Nothing. 32gb NTFS Thumb drive. Nothing. 16gb FAT32. Nothing. MicroSD 16gb (used in my MK808). Nothing. Thought my USB was blown. Plugged in a PS3 Sixaxis controller and it worked. So something was strange.
Read online that there was a firmware patch that must have broke some things. I'm assuming this broke if a USB was previously mounted.
Only a Factory Reset would fix it. Plugged in the USB HDD and it booted right now first time. Spent 2 days screwing with it.
So if nothing mounts, factory reset. It SHOULD mount out of the box. FAT32 and NTFS are both confirmed to work with no additional apps.

I did a factory reset, still wouldn't work. I lost hours of work to set it up.
I managed to fix it with a script after about 5 hours

yeah no problem. However i REALLY fail to see how this belong in the development section. This should be for ROMs, MODs and tweaks, not really how best to get a build in stand feature working. No matter how bad it has been implemented by OUYA.
Could some of the mods look into moving OP's topic?
