Transferring apps to another phone - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Lovely people at Vodafone UK have allowed me to upgrade 6 month early for no extra cost to the Samsung Galaxy S2.
Was going to wait for Nexus Prime but hey, you know. It's waiting isn't it?
Going to run both phones as I love the Nexus.
My question is this, I currently have all my Nexus apps on an ext4 partition running Darktremors a2sd.
If I use titanium backup to do a full backup, can I then install titanium on a rooted Galaxy, transfer the backup files over and restore all missing apps using Titanium?
If not, is there an easy way to move apps without having to redownload them all?
Am currently running latest MIUI ROM.
Many thanks

I've done this with my wifes G2 - MT4G switch... No problems...

Swapping My Nexus one..

Okay My nexus one got Dust under the screen and The power button has become unresponsive in the past few weeks so i call htc for a swap..
Now i need to know How to get all my Info saved on my old Nexus to my new nexus one..
I have 2.2.1 Rooted with titanium backup installed (ive never used it before).. is that the only Program i need to do the Job...
Is it as simple as Backup use titanium to old nexus sd card then rooting the new nexus one and then importing the back up with titanium??
Titanium will back up your apps and data, so you can restore on pretty much any rooted ROM.
Alternatively, you could do a full nandroid (either through recovery, or through ROM Manager). This will back up everything in your OS, including ROM and kernel. If your new phone is SLCD, older ROMs may not be compatible.

[Q] BELL i9000m users: is the Froyo 2.2 update ready yet ?

Does anyone have any info regarding the froyo update for Bell Canada users ?
is it avail yet? via kies?
I haven't rooted or lag fixed - strictly stock here.
Whats the best way to back up all my apps -- can Titanium pro do this ?
Titanium Backup is one of the best IMO. But you'll need root acces to run it. If you want to know why! Because Titanium also back up your paid apps and system apps. Be carefull about system apps as you really don't want to restore them on a different firmware than the one they've been back up from. So make sure you only restore apps you really installed yourself. When you will be ready to restore your apps on froyo just go trough the list and make sure you uncheck any apps you don't know about cause it could cause you problem to restore gtalk from eclair on froyo (exemple). Once you start the restore process on Titanium Backup you won't be prompted for your approval for every application by android as you would be if using another program to restore them. TB will install all of them on his own and even restore their market link. Once complete just restart the phone and open the market to see all you installed apps again and be informed about available update.
This is really the best available program to back up and restore apps but you need a rooted phone. Don't worry about warranty you can always unroot a phone after your procedure.
Regarding the availability of froyo update just do a little research and you'll find an approximate date cause it's not there (officially) for now but should be soon.

Thanks alot buddy. I just downloaded the Z4 Root app. Does this work with i9000m ? can anyone confirm ?
If so I'm gonna root my phone this aft. and back up my stuff!
When updating, i hear the best thing to do is a factory reset after update.
Once I boot back into the phone with Froyo, do I install Titanium Back up ? then open the app and hit "restore" ? I'm assuming it would look on my SD card for my "old" back up of apps ? I can only assume it doesn't back up stuff to a cloud/server.
Also, is this internal SD it backs up to or external SD
There was the first week of December floating around, and now I don't even know anymore.
Seems everybody has it now except us...
Yeah a good number of us I9000M users have updated to an unofficial bell ROM leaked a week or so back.
If you want the official rom, the last I heard was mid December.
If you do the unofficial route do some reading before hand before you decide. Many I9000M users have had corrupt internal SD cards, which result in a trip to a bell store for service.
You have been warned !

[Q] Official upgrades & losing apps

Hi all, I've a very simple question: I finally decided to upgrade my Froyo 2.2 Galaxy S to Gingerbread and I'm trying to understand if I'll lose all my apps or not.
A friend of mine, who has an unbranded Galaxy S, says that he didn't loose his apps... It's not that I don't trust him, but I can't find anything on the web that confirms this thing!
Thank you for your help
EDIT: I'm going to use Kies for the upgrade, so I'm going to install an official firmware
You will keep all of your apps, but if you want to feel more comfortable you can always use Titanium Backup to make a backup of your apps.
The official upgrade process will keep your apps and data...

Those apps that you install later on? It's gonna be wipe out during the upgrade process. Usually people don't recommend backing up apps and data from different OS build (like from froyo to gingerbread)

[Q] A NON-wipe ICS rom?

Is there such a rom? I've checked teamhacksung's CM9 Alpha, Doc's Master ICS, Team ICSSGS, Fusion, and WeUI v0.6.6, and they all say to do a full wipe. Performed a search here and Google for any answers, but didn't find any.
I'm currently running Gingerbread 2.3.5 with Corn kernel, and when I upgraded from Froyo, I performed a full wipe. As many of you know, putting everything back on your phone is a major pain if you do not do a proper backup (I thought I backed up everything using Titanium, but apparently I didn't). Anyway, just curious if there is an ICS rom with a non-wipe option (or a super-cool, full of eye-candy Gingerbread rom with non-wipe).
Oh yeah, is Passion v13 Captivate-flashable? Thanks for any info you may have.

You need to do a full wipe on your phone since you're coming from a Gingerbread ROM. You may not delete what's on your sdcard if you want to retain it but as for apps, it will be deleted and so are your contacts, messages, etc.
Yuck. Okay, I figured as much, I was just hoping So, a Nandroid back-up is best, right? NOT Titanium?

Yes, Nandroid back-up is good. You could do Titanium Backup as well but a fresh install of the apps would be better. I'm not sure it would work if you backed-up the apps from Gingerbread and install it on ICS, but you could try one app and test it.

You can do a A Nandroid, but don't try restoring that on ICS or you will most likely cause a metric ton of problems. Titanium would be the best way to back up and restore your apps and app data. NEVER restore system data.

Yep, forgot to mention that. Just backup your Apps and not your System Data.
Okay, wow, all the reading that I have done and I did NOT know that. No system data. Got it. Thank you both!
CM9 builds when upgrading from previous CM9 builds don't need a full wipe... I'm sure the others are the same... So won't be so bad unless you go between them all...
If you are so concerned with keeping your data and not wanting to go through the "pain" of resetting all your apps and such, you should stay with what you have. Instead, use a launcher with ICS themes to get the look of the ICS.
If you can take some pain and make the jump though, ICS offers a way more slicker OS for your Cappy.
Do not use Nandroid backup to restore your apps... TIBU is the one to use! As others said, the best way is to do a fresh (from the market) reinstall of all your apps and then use TIBU to restore your data for those specific apps only...
Edit: Concider this though while you are looking to upgrade. Most of these ICS roms are in beta stage... this means some bugs and other inconveniences... mind you they are minor but they exist. As the devs get these bugs and other issues addressed and update their roms, they would often require a fresh install (full wipe) to ensure best performance. This means that you will have to occasionally do a full wipe of your phone. It's fun to see the latest and greatest the devs have to offer but it also means that you have to do some "hard" work to enjoy the fruits of their labor... just something for you to think about...
I did not see it mentioned so I'll add. Every ROM that has a "no wipe" update is such because it is only a minor update to the existing ROM and not the whole. Even trying to do so results is a miss match of files and programs so at best you'll get FCs all over there place, at worst bootloops.
ICS, is a huge set of changes, including things google merged or removed. So the data from an app on an older version of android would be trying to send/receive info from a program that does not exist anymore and upon not getting what it wants would FC.
If you don't like having to restore everything, then wait from ICS until you see a few no wipe updates. Aside from SGSICS (since it is pure ASOP, and least likely to have any major changes) they all have a fair amount of developing yet to be done.
Now to the question of which type of backup . A nandroid backup is meant to restore your phone to it's current state (minus any partition changes). Tibu is designed for something like ROM hoping, so it only saves apps and their data. To illustrate an example of how to use both: 1 make backups, 2 load ICS ROM, 3 Tibu restore user apps (and user data only), 4 toy with ROM (be it a few hours or days), 5 you don't like it and want to go back, 6 Odin/Heimdall back to GB (to fix partition sizes), 7 restore nandroid and it's like your trip to ICS never happened.

Cvcduty, you're right about enjoying the fruits of the other devs' labor. If they're willing to put in all that hard work just to keep our Captivates as updated as possible, then the very least I can do is go through 5 minutes of work to flash the roms correctly and in the way the devs intended, and not look for an easier way. I have flashed a couple of times before, I'm just not completely comfortable doing it. But I almost there!

DaNaRkI, it's not that I don't like to restore everything (even though that's what I said), it's more like even though I have flashed a couple of times already, I'm still a little uncomfortable doing it. And I have read, I mean read for hours before I took my first step, but it seems like the more I read, I keep finding more new stuff that I probably should have known to start with. Take Nandroid and Tibu for example, I thought they worked exactly the same, but now I know, thanks to you, that there is a BIG difference. AND I learned yesterday (reading somewhere on here) to never ever restore "system data". It's a lot to keep up with if you're a blonde
Thank you for taking the time to explain, it helped a lot!

Upgarade to ICS

Hi guys, I want to upgrade my galaxy note to ICS since its finally out after taking forever but the thing I wanna ask before I do so is can I update to stock ICS through kies from a rooted room?
I am currently running 2.3.6 stock rom but rooted, can I just update it to ICS stock or do I have to unroot it then update?
Also after updating to ICS I assume all data will be wiped, is there a way to backup app data like games without using titanium backup?
Composed on my Samsung Galaxy Note using XDA Premium app
usually you don't have to unroot. offical rom like to do the unrooting for you without even asking
if you go ICS with KIES, KIES do backup, but I don't know how far it backup. my friend's Galaxy S1 got some of the chinese names corrupted by KIES. seems korean are not good at handling chinese
if your data are important, do the backup yourself.
personally I don't care about SMS, contacts are all in google cloud, angry birds backed up by "angry birds back up"
titanium backup is known to be failing with system apps data restore, but it should be good enough to backup your game saves
Ok thanks for the answer, but I think I will wait for the next ICS update since the current one is a prototype and has lock screen missing. I waited so long for ICS, not a problem to wait some more for a stable full release. HURRY UP SAMSUNG!
