Im new to the tablet world, and Im interested in a 10.1 tablet. It has the Wifi on it, so that means no wireless contract needed at all right? I want to use it USB tethering off of my cell phone and other areas, for movies, netflix etc.
Also, are these lagging or going to start to diminish in the android hacking world? Or does the future look good on these still? Any reason to stay away form the 10.1 tablet? From reading these seem to be the better of the bunch currently.
Thanks fellas, any and all help/pointers is appreciated.
These are the 7" Galaxy Tab forums, you need to find the 10.1" forums below,

Are there any options yet for running third-party ROMs for the wifi-only version of the Galaxy Tab (P1010)? It would be nice to get an upgrade to Gingerbread. So far I've only managed to root my tab, but it looks like Overcome and others are geared to the 3G versions of the Tab.
Thanks,
Scott
should be posted in the Q&A section, but not that i have heard of. there is almost no support for the wifi only version. unless someone wants to donate a tab to spacemoose or oldmacnut

Yeah it would also be nice if people took the time to look where they are posting.

I knew exactly where I was posting; this seemed to me like a perfectly appropriate question for a forum where third-party android developers discuss their work.
Thanks for the snarky comment though; you really added a lot to this thread.

Hey folks help me out if you don't mind. Yes... I'm sure the answer is here somewhere I just don't have the time.
My wife is getting a new 7" Tab (P1010) and I have no experience with it. Been running and rooting Android devices for a while now but not a Tab. I may never need to touch this thing but I anticipate that somewhere down the road I will hear: "I can't get this to work".
When that happens it will be time to root and I will do my homework. Until that time one simple question:
??? Should I let her perform any system updates after the unboxing ????
Thanks in advance... I just want to keep my options open even if I never need them.
BTW if anyone want's to expand on my options I would greatly appreciate it. I may steal it just to "tinker" but it would have to be a quick (one click etc) process due to time constraints.
THANKS!!
How come all the developers are focusing on the gsm and cdma models. Is there anyway to get a master thread focusing on the p1010 model. I think it is about time for the wifi only model to get roms or at least a overclocking mod. Im pretty sure i checked everywhere so if anyone knows about any GT roms for the wifi models i will greatly appreciate it.
+ 1 in here.
For those student with limited budget. P1010 is a great device for those who arent rich~
Perhaps the real solutions would be a separate subforum for the p1010, so its impossible to ignore?
+1 here.
GALAXY TAB P1010 OWNERS UNITE!
CALLING ALL GALAXY TAB DEVS, PLEASE HELP US OUT, just 1 port from the gt p1000 to take us away from stock nastiness! PLEASE HELP!

You have my sword.
Samsung pretty much abandoned the PT1010. The looming GTab7+ puts another nail in the coffin for this model.
The Devs are our last hope.
even my old htc magic got gingerbread already
+1
Please tell us what you need to start developing. I mean Cyanogen even works for Samsung...
P1010 model employs different hardware, hence different drivers... If someone were to donate a p1010 device to the devs there would be more chance of rom developement however most of the devs have the p1000. This is why there are a heap of p1000 GSM roms, not so many CDMA roms & no real developement of wireless only roms...
Sorry, but the rule is supply and demand - there are a heap of p1000 users and not enough p1010 users. Most devs got a tab right off the bat so the p1010 users have no devs available...
Donate??

By donating, do you mean that I need to physically give it to a dev, or can I allow it to be used for testing while still keeping it with myself.
If it means i need to give it physically, then I need to know if there are any devs around New Delhi, India. I would be willing to buy a new one and lend it, or do the testing myself.
I am not an engineer, but I was able to root my I9000 using Heimdall and install MIUI on the same. I think I will be able to test as well.

I may be pulling a dead thread but there is someone working on CWM and CM7, then Cm9 I believe, in the development section. Name is motafoca and he already has working CWM and almost finished CM7. There's still one dev who cares about us!

Is it worth rooting/romming this verizon Galaxy tab sch-i800?
almost everything I have tried has been a link to a virus as the downloads work and go strait to my virus locker!
I have searched on here a bunch only to have some downloads work but not all. I feel like I'm spinning my wheels. This is my first time trying to root an android device.
Any help or guidance would be much appreciated.
thanks,
ChefG
ChefG,

Might want to search YouTube videos or other blogs for help. Just joined this and something your specifically looking for can be quite hard to find.
Hi all,
I just purchased 6 cyber monday 7" fire tablets. Think I paid $30/ a pop. I did so with the expectation of modifying them all for my kids. My hope is that I can maximize the hardware purchase by rooting the tablets, but realized, as of this post, that there are no known solutions on OS version 5.4 (which is how they shipped) or 5.6 which is what they update to almost immediately when connected to wifi. Given the price I am confident that a ton of these were purchased and am therefore hopeful that a solution to the rooting dilemma will be found with the large demand out there.
I thought I would post, to create a location for the latest information on rooting the device, and to hear from others out there who may be in the same position. I'd like to find out what others are doing to mitigate the limitations of the Fire OS until a root solution is found (if it is even possible...as I have little knowledge in the field of hacking). For me personally, I find the biggest drawback is not being able to connect (fully) to Chrome. The main perks for me being gmail, calendar, all bookmarks. I think I could live with the cumbersome Fire interface if I could access Chrome. Conversely, I think these tablets will eventually become paperweights if I can't make them more Android like.
I have been using it to video stream and watch MP4's while in bed, with an external bose bluetooth speaker of course (the onboard speaker is a dog). I also am using it as my main kindle reader, replacing a Kindle 3 wifi that recently blew its screen. I will have to get more out of it if my children, who are android phone and chromebook users, are to find it useful.
Let's hear what others are doing and if anyone has gotten wind of solutions being worked on.

I accept the rules of the forum but do have the same questions, reading since hours and do not have a final glue as well.
This might be a good starting point:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/help/help-thread-7th-gen-2017ask-question-t3636919
There are hundreds of threads mixed different kind of devices 7'' 8'' 10'' GEN5 ,6,7...
For a beginner with the device this is a quite confusing situation, so if some one has a hint or link where to start to read - all help is very welcomed.

Sounds like you scored an early build 5th gen device (likely 18-24 months old). Not many of those pups around!
No need to root or even boot up FireOS v5. You can launch TWRP directly from fastboot and immediately install the custom ROM of your choosing (likely Fire Nexus or Lineage 12.1).
so how do i launch twrp? and I can choose ANY rom?

Best take note of post date when quoting another member. In this case the post was nearly a year old.
