The GT p1010 desperately needs developers!! - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How come all the developers are focusing on the gsm and cdma models. Is there anyway to get a master thread focusing on the p1010 model. I think it is about time for the wifi only model to get roms or at least a overclocking mod. Im pretty sure i checked everywhere so if anyone knows about any GT roms for the wifi models i will greatly appreciate it.

+ 1 in here.
For those student with limited budget. P1010 is a great device for those who arent rich~

Perhaps the real solutions would be a separate subforum for the p1010, so its impossible to ignore?

+1 here.
GALAXY TAB P1010 OWNERS UNITE!
CALLING ALL GALAXY TAB DEVS, PLEASE HELP US OUT, just 1 port from the gt p1000 to take us away from stock nastiness! PLEASE HELP!

You have my sword.
Samsung pretty much abandoned the PT1010. The looming GTab7+ puts another nail in the coffin for this model.
The Devs are our last hope.

even my old htc magic got gingerbread already
+1
Please tell us what you need to start developing. I mean Cyanogen even works for Samsung...

P1010 model employs different hardware, hence different drivers... If someone were to donate a p1010 device to the devs there would be more chance of rom developement however most of the devs have the p1000. This is why there are a heap of p1000 GSM roms, not so many CDMA roms & no real developement of wireless only roms...
Sorry, but the rule is supply and demand - there are a heap of p1000 users and not enough p1010 users. Most devs got a tab right off the bat so the p1010 users have no devs available...

Donate??

By donating, do you mean that I need to physically give it to a dev, or can I allow it to be used for testing while still keeping it with myself.
If it means i need to give it physically, then I need to know if there are any devs around New Delhi, India. I would be willing to buy a new one and lend it, or do the testing myself.
I am not an engineer, but I was able to root my I9000 using Heimdall and install MIUI on the same. I think I will be able to test as well.

I may be pulling a dead thread but there is someone working on CWM and CM7, then Cm9 I believe, in the development section. Name is motafoca and he already has working CWM and almost finished CM7. There's still one dev who cares about us!

[Q] Regarding upcoming Rogers Captivate

Hey everyone, I kind of have a question that might be hard to answer. But maybe one of you can speak from experience with Rogers and android phones in general. Well my question is this. When the Rogers Captivate comes out later this month will the method of rooting be the same as the at&t version for the most part? I also wonder if there is a chance (maybe this has happened to other android phones in the past?) that Rogers will be a gigantic wiener and make it IMPOSSIBLE to root it at all?
Disregarding my questions for a second, it's a pleasure to finally join this forum and thanks for taking the time to read this.
Cheers!
First off, welcome to XDA, glad to have you with us.
Now onwards with your question. It's almost impossible, maybe even illegal, for a carrier to block rooting on an Android device. The whole point of these phones is OPEN SOURCE. The rooting method should be almost identical for the most part. Because we don't have Rogers here, nobody can truly say for sure, but I'd imagine it would be the same.
Oh, that's really interesting! Thanks
Hey,
The phone releases this Monday and the model number for the Rogers version is SGH-i896 whereas the ATT version is SGH-i897. Some files would need to be updated but nothing major. Hopefully we get the support for the Rogers Captivate and can flash it with the awesome custom ROMS
(my first post on the forum and would love to learn and contribute to the awesome xda team)

Welcome to you as well! I'm not so sure that any files would have to be updated. As long as the hardware is exactly the same, all should be well.

The update scripts have the model number in them which would have to be updated. Nothing major.
Interesting, for roms and such it does not sound like too much of a hassle. But maybe having the exact same hardware wasn't necessarily for the best. I got kind of excited with hopes that this new Captivate would be capable of handling 3.5G I think it's referred to HSPUA+ (Don't quote me on that!) Does anyone know if this is the case?
On a side note, do any current or upcoming phones support 3.5G on the Rogers network?

[Q] What is the difference between I897/captivate and I9000/galaxy S?

I had always thought that I897 was captivate, and I9000 was all other Galaxy S phones. But I have a captivate that lists its "model number" as GT-I9000, and see here that captivate users are installing I9000 ROMs. Am I wrong about the difference?
Not development.
Captivate = i897
Galaxy S = i9000

as mikey said, this isn't development related.
you are merely installing i9000 ROM's with reoriented kernels.

As they both said - what part of development does this fall under?!
I've noticed something around here at XDA that is really kind of odd to me. Whenever a new guy comes here and posts a thread not knowing that it isn't the right thread to post on. There's always the "too cool" attitude thrown out by a few. I know that XDA is here to help others and think that maybe instead of posting smartass replies that maybe an answer to the question and a point in the right direction would be the best thing to help a noob out. I've learned more from the great guys here at XDA (ADAMHOLDEN85, MIKEYMIKE01, KIZZMIAZZ, ZELENDEL, EXTREMEKILLA09, TSACHI) from their positive attitudes and direction than I've learned from any other forum. Keep it welcome here guys.

^ Amen to that!
yeah, for real, it only takes one guy to correct the miss placed thread and a mod to move it. and you can correct a person and be helpful at the same time.
to the op, if the captivate is saying gt -i9000 on a splash screen on startup or on your computer when plugged in to usb then it is a modded i9000 kernel installed, this is very common because the source code for the i9000 was realeased long before the captivate and things like overclock and color fixes could be baked in. a lack of source on the captivate meant that either you ran 2.1, ran 2.2 basically stock or you used an i9000 kernel to get all the good stuff. if it says i9000 in about phone or in apps then you have an i9000 rom and the build.prop was not changed.
to be clear the att captivate is the i897, the armani is the i9010 the rogers is the i896 and the chinese version is the i9088. the i897 and i896 are identical aside from the rom, the armani has a different battery door and maybe darker plastic, i haven't seen one up close. the chinese version may have other difference like less ram.
the i9000 is sold in many countries and is the real galaxy s. it has a forward facing camera. it is sold in many countries and has several versions including the i9000m and i9000b, the b has an antenna to pickup live digital hd tv and is sold in brazil
the i500 is the fascinate and the mezmerize in the us and is cdma.
the t959 is the vibrant in the us and the t959d is the facinate in canada. these are the closest relatives to the captivates but look more like a i9000.
then there is the epic, i dont remember the model of it but it has a forward facing camera and a slide out keyboard. it is cdma and i think do to the stock software, that it is an epic piece of crap!
there are others now such as the nexus s i9020 which is a google dev phone and has aosp gingerbread, and the indulge which isn't quite a galaxy s but does have the hummingbird chip and adds a keyboard and lte data network
Couldn't have said it better. The same reason why I waited so long to push into the custom side. Sick of the attitude on here(for the most part). Am I new to android or XDA for that matter? Maybe. But I am not stupid and I don't deserve to be treated like I am. Anyways...
Longer story short...I resorted to learning by a q&a session with one of the nicer devs. And by the end of a couple pm's back and forth, I was flashing my first rom with no problems.
A little kindness can go a long way people..
I agree. Calm down folks. Everyone makes mistakes especially whe they are new to something. I'm new to and posted a few questions in the Q&A section but some people act totally anal in response there. Need more people like the nice dev's who are patient and calm with their users.
Wheres the moral fiber thread?

I believe it would be extremely advantages to have more developers working the tab. I have the utmost respect for the handful that seem to do the work of double their numbers but someone like Rodderik would not only bring himself to the party but there would undoubtedly be others that follow him.
I am between employment right now otherwise there would be one in the post on its way to him/her but I would be open to a small contribution if this could get momentum. Please only leave productive comments.. if its not something you're interested in seeing happen let the thread die a sinking death!

Ill donate towards a tab, depending on the Dev, but with cm7 almost perfect, and afterbridge doing his thing, is it really needed for another dev, I'd rather one good rom than have 50 crap ones like most the other sections, also this is in the wrong section.

I agree. CM7 is now flashable, Overcome is just fantastic and Honeycomb is soon available to everyone. IMHO, I can't see how the development could benefit from another Tab. Unless Overcome gets ported for CDMA users..

What's so special about CM7? I know he does work for most phones? Or at least that rom is available for a number of phones. I'm guessing it's good because i've heard people speak so highly of it.
Also would it have any advantage over overcome's rom? And no disrespect to overcome because it's the first custom rom i've ever flashed and is the only reason I kept my tab. Love it.
Guessing i'm just asking if you or someone else could educate me on cm and specifically cm7.
I'm up with this thread, i cannot donate for a Tab but i'll send some beers to Rodd.
All devices get the best from the kernel, with a good one your tab will be always fine, it's not all about a Rom.
Have i t remember when we all got smartass/interactive governors fot our tab?
Now, you can say "i don't use smartass" or" my tab currently has not Ext4 because i don't need it", i say, why wasting your time to come here and say that we don't need another dev?
Just my 2cents of course.

I'd sell my body to medical science and give the profit to the dev who would port it.
Well, either MIUI or HTC Sense. Those are the only things I miss from my Desire days.
CM7 is completely AOSP. Basically built from scratch for each major release (CM6 - CM7) then they add bacon Tablet tweeks, different lock screens, theme chooser, custom brightness ssettings and loads of other things.
I don't see it as an amazing rom, more like stock, with goodies. I've never understood why people praise it all day. Its great yeah, but I don't see what's amazing about it. But Cyanogen is the Android custom roms/development forefather. He was one of the first to start it and hasn't stopped.

Id donate up to thirty bones for a Sprint CM7 rom. I'd give any spare cash for that.
How about a dev ports/creates the Trinity 14 kernal for the tab. Now that would be baaaadassss

Just to make sure..

Is this the right dev section to root the galaxy tab GT-P1010 ?
Have been rooting phones ,and I know the models but Samsung is always confusing me with the model numbers.
This will be my first tablet rooting attempt.
So just wanna make sure if I'm on the right sections.
Thanks

Right section.
Unfortunately, there isn't that many devs supporting the P1010.
User base also quite small.
So you will find not much resources for P1010.
But no where else to go in xda for that.
Good luck.
Thanks, I just wanna root and put a better Rom. Not looking to do much. It's for my mom

Dev related question.

Hey devs and gals... I feel like i'm new with HTC again since I've been a Samsung user for the last few years. Yet I decided to get an M8 and Sprint gave me a good deal with HKE...
So me having experience with rom and theming development for GSM Samsung phones yet I feel like a totally noob here with HTC and specially with it being CDMA network...
I did a lot of roms porting back in the day for Samsung phones too.. Again I would like to ask devs if they won't mind add me to their team or individual dev to help me out on refreshing my mind about how things work for HTC and CDMA network so I/we can start rom development.
101 views and no answer? Are y'all not interested?

I do this for fun.. However when I used to be a Samsung user devs seems more friendly, we were like a big forum family lol.
We would help each other out.. It was not like who did it first or to each its own.
Maybe that is why this forum is like dead pretty much. There is no lots of devs an they dont seem to care or help anyone else.
If this was like on Samsung forum we would have a SENSE/LP rom up and running a long time ago.
I'm personally trying to get it to work for me. But being new to CDMA I have no idea how it works. But will get there eventually.
What exactly are you trying to figure out? You seemed a bit general in the post [emoji14]

All the devs that I'm in regular communication with are open to helping, but not giving hand outs, I was accepted by TensaiLabs based on what I was trying to do and the very specific questions that I asked. That being said I haven't dove into porting too much so I'm not much help but from what I know and what little help I was with the sense 6 port for the LTE you have to edit build.prop, change libs, and add in sprint files and boot.img
