Things to not do (or to think about) after Root...for now

The users. First off I want to make this very clear, I am not responsible for anything nor is droidxforums for any damages done to devices due to root, since it was up to the user to make the decisions they make. Thank you, please continue to read.
1. First off I am posting this for reasons that were obvioulsy not too obvious.
2. If you chose to delete anything other than something that can be downloaded from the market, YOU took that risk. You have potentially just bricked your device.
3. DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING THAT HAS "BLUR" IN ITS FILE NAME.
4. DO NOT try to flash a custom recovery via Rom Manager then wonder why your phone is stuck with a cool new Motorola logo.
5. This thread will be updated very frequently, before posting questions and what not, just post your problem, no questions please, I will be using this to help as many of you as possible.
6. Most importantly do not mess with the framework right now, there is many $600 papers weights laying around now.
7. DO NOT TOUCH BACK UP ASSISTANCE UNLESS ITS WINDY IN YOUR HOUSE OR OFFICE AND YOU NEED A PAPER WEIGHT.

We tested this last nite,, you can do basically whatever you want as long as you put the phone back to pristine condition before you do a wipe or update or whatever..
Here is the basic method that works to copy files back to the phone if you took out bloat..

It seems that no one knows for sure.
People have been able to root, re-copy any removed system applications ( blockbuster, skype, etc..) apply the .604 update and stay rooted
Only time will tell for sure

I only deleted Blockbuster, Skype, NFSShift, and AmazonMP3/Kindle apps. Would I need to put those back on and unroot if I wanted to do a hard reset?

From what I hear, you need to put back ALL of the apps that came with the phone to apply the .604 update
Un-rooting doesn't seem to be necessary

He is correct, we have had phones with tons removed, copied everythign back with the right permissions, took out all the things that root did, basically un-rooting, apply the update, then re-root, so you will have to put the phone back to pristine before the update, but it works fine.
At least it does for now. As for the rooting, it is a huge gaping hole in linux/android, not a specific phone or phone home launcher so it will likely not be fixed until at least Gingerbread 3.0 IF THEN. Bird really smoked the monkey on this one, i would marry him if it was legal.
But yeah, dont freak out if u removed a ton of stuff, here is a complete pristine system app dir if u need:

Check the permissions from one of the files you did not remove
I'm not 100% sure that will work

It is 644 if I recall correctly.

I think you need to check the umask for each file as well

ON the post on how to put back backup assistant it tells you the permissions for all the files in the app dir

So I wanted to install a status bar replacement for Droid X, which involves replacing framework-res.apk. Instead of doing it through adb, I replaced the file with Root Explorer, and it sent it into boot loop. Do I now have a paperweight? =/
I tried doing factory reset, but that didn't fix it...
Edit: It sees update.zip on my SD card in recovery mode (some file I think I downloaded before), so is there a way to maybe apply a recovery command to replace framework-res.apk?
Edit2: sigh, nvm, there is no update.zip on the SD card, I'm not sure where it's reading it from. But when I tell it to apply it, it doesn't find it either. Looks like I bricked my phone

The Titanium Backup "Freeze" feature has been working like a charm for me. I've frozen all of the bloatware (the autorun stuff) and seen no adverse effects on the phone.
The phone seems to perform better without the running bloat. But this might be a placebo effect. The jury is still out...I'm testing. One thing is for sure, I feel better knowing that useless extra processes are not running in the background.
The big open question for me is how does the TB Freeze function work? Is it like the task killers or does it intercept the app on boot?
It does not change anything in the root directory since all the *.apk files are in tact for the frozen apps. This is the main reason I use the freeze since there seems to be little risk of bricking the phone with this method.

[Q] Simple root for Nexus One

Noob here. I've searched the forums and have tried to piece together what I need to know for what I would like to do. I think I have a general understanding, but was hoping someone could verify or clarify.
I've got a Nexus 1 running 2.3.3. Never been rooted. All OTA updates.
What I would like is to root it so that I can delete crap like Facebook and Amazon and make room on the built-in memory. I don't want to unlock the boot-loader, and I don't want to flash custom ROMs. I do want control of what is stored where, the ability to move things to SD (even if they aren't marked for that (and yes, aware that that can cause problems sometimes)), and the ability to run Titanium backup.
As I understand it, all of that can be done with just root permission. But it seems that simple root for the N1 under 2.3.3 isn't available. Can anyone comment?

Depends what you call simple...
Since you don't want to unlock the bootloader, you can try using the passimg method to revert to an earlier build of android, and then use any "simple root" available.
Unfortunately, a small percentage of users don't seem to be able to use the passimg method, and if you get an "main version is older" error, then it means you are among them...

Good luck rooting, without trying to unlock the bootloader. It's simply not available atm I belive. Any particular reason you don't want to unlock the bootloader, beside the warranty?

I'm still coming up to speed on this, so it's quite possible that I don't understand all the subtleties.
What I want to do is uninstall space-wasting preinstalled junk, and to run Titanium backup. I'm not interested (for now) in custom ROMs. I think I want to avoid unlocking the bootloader both for the warranty (a minor issue), convenience (another minor issue that could be overcome...), and because I want to retain as much of a "stock" device as possible, mostly to allow for future OTA updates. From what I've read, it sounds like a root would accomplish all that. Hence I'd rather avoid all the additional complications if a simple root were in fact available.

Unlocking the bootloader does not affect you device's ability to receive/install OTA updates, but removing "space-wasting preinstalled junk" will certainly prevent you from installing the OTA...

Totally agree. If you check the threads that were active during the OTA onslaught, many people could not install stock Gingerbread due to removing stock system apps (Facebook, Amazon, Twitter, etc...)

...but, if you have a custom recovery, you can still install the updates in a modified form.

Really? I was unaware of that. Would you mind posting a link to an OTA (say, Gingerbread for example) that I would be able to install on a stock Froyo ROM, which I had removed say, Amazon and Facebook?

I was just asking if anyone has done this (or does this), as I would certainly love to remove apps, as long as I can install future updates as they become available. (Doing that is beyond my knowledge...) I like my stock ROM, and I would certainly remove certain apps if I know someone would provide a "modified" update.zip for a stock ROM that doesn't check if Amazon, etc are installed.
What I don't want is to flash a new ROM every time an update came out...

It is very simple. If you remove stuff from the stock rom the ota will fail.
You will then need flash the same way as you would for any of the custom roms for updates.
Or you could manually put the stuff you removed back but that is probably more work then you want to do.

Easiest approach would probably be to take a backup of the stock image before you remove any apps, and restore it when you hear that an update is available...

Restoring a NAND backup is essentially the same thing as flashing a new ROM, which is what I don't want to be doing. What would be good is to be able to install a modified/repacked/whatever-you-want-to-call-it OTA update file that has the check (which checks to see if apps are installed) disabled.
If it is just a line in a script that needs to be removed in an OTA, so that it will flash (with a custom recovery of course) with Amazon removed, it is surely doable, no? If it is doable, I am surprised that no one has done it for any of the updates... (at least I haven't seen any).

Thanks, but my question was: is it possible to modify an OTA zip file in such a way that it disables checking for installed apps like Amazon?
This would be helpful, and I had never thought of it until danger-rat mentioned it, but I may have misunderstood his post - he was probably talking about just flashing a new ROM, but that is not what I am interested in.

Yes, it's possible.
The update script is pretty big though, so you'd have your work cut out making sure you covered everything...
The other option would be to build an restore zip, that just reinstalled the apps you remove. Just add the apps to a zip as you restore them...

That sounds like a good idea.
This is what I'd like to do as a test:
1) Restore a stock Froyo ROM
2) Remove the Amazon.apk (and possibly others) from my ROM and save it somewhere (and whatever other files would be needed).
3) Create an update.zip file that would place the Amazon.apk file back to the correct directory in a stock ROM (i.e., odexed).
4) Flash that update.zip
5) Flash the Gingerbread OTA and see if it works.
Would you be able to point me to a guide on how to create a flashable zip? Again, I would need to be able to do this for an odexed ROM.

Bionic 5.5.1_84_DBN-55 Auto_DeOdexer

For those of you that do not want to DeOdex their phone manually, here's a script I created to do it for you. I've created this same script before for the Droid X, and it's quite simple. Here's what you need.
1) Your phone must be Rooted.
2) You must install Bionic_Bootstrapper.
Below you can find these items.
COMPLETE GUIDE TO ROOT AND BOOTSTRAP
Once you have that.... download my DeOdexer and put it on your sdcard.
Bionic_AutoDeOdexer
MIRROR
Reboot into recovery. BACKUP YOUR PHONE!!!!
Once that completes, then go to install from zip. Choose file from zip... find the Bionic_DeOdexer zip file... and run it.
There is a script at the beginning that checks the build.prop file and makes sure you have the correct build. You must have 5.5.1_84_DBN-55. If you do not, I hope it fails.
Reboot.... and all should be good. Now that you are DeOdexed.... have fun theming!
As you should know, do this at your own risk. Yes, I've tested this on my phone and had no issue. This doesn't mean you won't experience a problem. I'm not responsible for what happens to your phone.
ENJOY!!!

For some reason when I try to run this it says that it failed. I have downloaded a few times and tried. I'm on the same build and completely stock rooted.. weird. Any ideas?

Have you removed or touched any of the system/app/ 's ?

I'm running the rooted stock rom. I haven't removed any programs or modified/renamed anything in /system/apps, however, I did freeze some of the bloat using TB. Do I need to defrost the apps first before running this script, or does it matter?

If you modified any of the APKs, to include freezing them, I cannot guarantee it will work. Best thing is to be completely stock and rooted. At least that's the way I did this script.

Thanks for the answer! TB has a batch defrost, so if I decide to go ahead & run this script, I'll defrost everything first.

I did mine with frozen apps and it seems to be working well. Was able to install the 1% mod and use a custom battery icon too.

Good to know. I do know that depending on how the person downloads some packages, they may get corrupted during download. If it fails one time... try again. If it continues to fail, re-download and try again.

So the file isn't available any more?

Kind of a goofy question, but is there any reason that deodexing the stock (rooted) rom would worsen data loss issues?
The reason I ask is that I reverted to stock yesterday after experiencing substantial data problems with UNLEASH3D 1.5. Ran well for the entire day and this morning. Then, a couple hours ago, I ran this script and have had nothing but issues since, with both WiFi and cellular data dying, and not coming back without a reboot. Reverted to stock again, and all is normal.
Any ideas?

I have these same issues on stock, on .892 and on any roms - I really think it is just the phone :/ - there is a known bug on the bug list about data connectivity issues.
Btw the .892 radio is complete crap.... at least on my phone it is...

Market Apps
After running this script, I noted that my normal list of around 60 or so market apps is now showing only around 13 apps. Also, the market app asked me for authorization when I started it up. So, I don't know if this script, or maybe an automatic update to the market app has caused my missing downloaded apps.
They are still on the phone, and still backed up with TB, but they are not shown in the market My Apps page.
Any thoughts or solutions?

...Argh, never mind, this phone seems to have a mind of its own. The account chosen for My apps was not my main google account but another one. Not sure how this happens, but I find little things like this all the time with Android. My favorite is that my email delivery settings (push vs. manual vs. schedule) seem to change on their own!

Believe it or not, I just had someone offer me (sum too much to speak of) for my Zio, so I just sold it tonight.
Ironic, eh?
But, the good thing is that I can go get another one since Cricket is still selling them for only ~$50 but I have to wait a few weeks till I actually have enough to get the first month of service (wish I could just buy the phone but, whatever).
Anyway, so while I won't be participating at this precise moment, here's my contribution - the first ROM uploaded to Dropbox as requested. I haven't used my Dropbox account since I created it, so I have no idea how the hell it works to be honest (signed up so a friend got more space or whatever, no idea). I believe this link will get the download for anyone, but I'm not sure about the bandwidth potential and it getting throttled or capped or whatever.

So I've flashed the rom and it has plenty of extra memory, I'm not seeing much difference in ram. Also the cricket mobile web app is not needed since it is only a shortcut to the browser, and since there is no browser you can get rid of it and some of the other cricket stuff.

The cricket's apps appear for you? O.O
On my phone they are not there......
Which one's are still auto-installing themselves onto our phones?
I have a script that can remove those applications from our phones if they are still appearing for some of you.
The ram difference isn't available yet due to my init.d script not working either because of the kernel or my permissions or something else.
This is no where near finished yet

So far my experience with this phone is that the wiping dies not erase anything. So the stock apps will not be gone unless the end user removes them. I installed a custom boot screen over the cricket one and it has never been removed. Even after I restored the stock image it was still there.

I will be installing vbox on my laptop's windows 7 OS later and unpacking the kernel stickied on the forum and the one in open zio to see why init.d scripts aren't working and what are the differences I'll maybe have an updated release of the rom next week....

So far my experience with this phone is that the wiping dies not erase anything. So the stock apps will not be gone unless the end user removes them. I installed a custom boot screen over the cricket one and it has never been removed. Even after I restored the stock image it was still there.

I noticed that myself, as I can't get the cricket stock apps to re-appear but I have a script for you all to run if you want those apps gone. It wont work though until I figure out this init.d startup script problem. As for your "boot screen" do you mean splash image or boot animation?

the boot animation. before spaz created his rom the only way i could install a different boot animation was to overwrite the stock images with alternate ones for a custom boot experience. I removed all the cricket apps right after I got the phone plus half of the google junk that i dont use.

hey i just installed your rom. only one small issue you should include some kind of file browser so we wont have to push one onto the system to access our data. also it would be nice if you could add the reboot option like spaz did.

It's because I didn't do a wipe of the data partition. I figured the updater script would do the wiping.

Mattix nope it doesn't wipe the data partition that's why I instructed to do so
As for jlmancuso I have never added a reboot option to the end button long-press options. But I can add a file browser Is ES File Explorer okay? Or would a different one be better?

I use ES file explorer myself. Though any browser of your choosing would be perfectly acceptable. I like the stripped down style. Keep up the good work.

I'd say root explorer but it's a paid app... I can also make a backup of gapps and upload a zip.

As for gapps I already have that ready for the next release but thanks for the offer. My main focus is the init.d script problem which i can't really examine until next week/this weekend maybe. But I'm working on it.

Is anyone else getting force closes on the Google search app, and force closes in acore while attempting to save contacts?
I think there was a few too many pulled off the system that are necessary for everyday use...

were the force closes due to not having a browser at first boot of the rom? or when you have a browser downloaded from the market does it still force close?
if so in both situations i may have pulled to many apps. i'm still working on them rom atm

New Update - Flash via CWM and keep root/recovery intact

Google just came out with a new update (JRO03D). Using the following method, you can apply it to your Nexus 7 and keep CWM and root.
Pre-requisites: Stock JRO03C Build. CWM Recovery. Root. NO CUSTOM ROMS. NO CUSTOM BUILD.PROP.
Step #1 - Backup your su app (root) with Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper.
Step #2 - Download http://core.routed.com/update.zip and put it in your /sdcard
Step #3 - Install update.zip via CWM.
Step #4 - Reboot tablet, and restore root via Voodoo.
Step #5 - Enjoy latest Google update!
My earlier version tried to keep the 'su' file suid-exec root, but that seemed to have caused failures for people, so I took that part out. I'll look into why in the morning. But for now, the above steps do work fine.

I think I should point out that this would probably not be a good idea to flash if you are using a custom ROM, since it's a bunch of patch files to the various applications on the device, which might differ depending on the ROM you are using. It should only be used on the stock ROM (outside of custom recovery and/or root).

It didn't work for me, and it aborted. Now my WiFi doesn't work and I dong know hot to fix it. I'll try in the morning.

Where did it fail? I installed it on mine (prior to posting this) and it worked perfectly. If it failed at the very beginning, you probably had validation enabled. Try disabling it and reapplying the update.

ALSO, make sure you had already applied the first update! The one that should have popped up when you first powered the device on. The above update I made is for the SECOND one, not the first. ie: JRO03C -> JRO03D. If yours is not the former, do not apply this, as the patching could fail.

Possibly, but I don't think so. This doesn't change the kernel, only update a bunch of system apks, libraries and a few other files. Do you remember how far it got before it failed? It should have given a step-by-step update in the CWM logs:

Ok, I figured out the problem. Here is the fix for you:
First, make a backup of your root. Use Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper.
Then, apply this via CWM:
http://core.routed.com/fix.zip
That will fix your permissions and wifi should work now. I'm going to update the OP now .

Hey guys, I'm about to go through rooting my Nexus 7. Its my first root, hell this is my first android tablet. What changes should i make, if any, based on the info in this thread, to the "How to Root Your Nexus 7 For idiots who have never Rooted anything before and have never owned a Android device before July 13th and want to be sure they do it properly without screwing anything up and keeping their files intact Guide 2.0" that i am hoping to find somewhere on this site (feel free to give suggestions for this as well but im pretty sure i saw a good thread). Ive already updated to the second 4.1.1 update today. thanks

Just a note if you modified your build.prop to enable the table UI you must restore your original for this to work.
The first time I tried it failed due to the build.prop differences. I quickly restored my original and reapplied with no issues.
