Yep, I need help. I'm aware of the myriad tut's on GIMP usage but due to slight learning disability, they tend to cause me difficulty.
.....so I'm trying to make selected areas of certain images semi-transparent n I just can't figure it out. I'm aware of the 'Layer' widget, but even with all its categoric options, I only see the possibility to adjust the opacity/transparency of the image as a whole. I am also vaguely aware of the 'layer mask' option but don't really understand how to achieve my desired affect w/ it. (really don't see why there's not an option to toggle opacity levels of selected areas by themselves!!)
Note: I do not have access to Windows programs atm, and I really would prefer to understand GIMP further anyway ...tho I do plan on trying virtual box. Currently I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty)

Certain areas of an image semi transparent? Take a solid image, and open it as a new layer. Delete the solid background layer, and replace it with a transparency layer. Move the transparent layer below the image you imported. Now this part is up to you on how you do it: You can select the area with the color/area/wand tool, free-form tool, or just a plain ol' brush shape.
Now select the erase tool, set the opacity to the desired amount, and make even strokes with your mouse (or tablet) to get an even transparency. Deselect (if selected) that area and your set. Just export (Save As...) .PNG format and preserve transparency.
This is the simplest ways of doing this. But there are many more methods of achieving the same concept with equal or even greater results, such as using modes, masks, imported .png's, layers set to %50 opacity, etc. Good luck!

REMEMBER, You can change the opacity of a brush! Not only layers!
You can download brushes from deviantart.com by typing in the keywords "Gimp Brushes"
download the Zipped files and extract it to your brushes folder.
I believe it's C: > Program Files > Gimp > Shared > Brushes (I'm may be wrong. I don't own a computer anymore to reference this. EDIT- Sorry, forgot it's not windows.)
Then go to gimp, click the brushes window and refresh your brushes. Or just close and reopen gimp.
If you need more help doing this, just google "How to import brushes to Gimp."

Thnk u! I'm reading ur replies now. I'll let u know how it works out.
I did see "changing the opacity of the brush" at a first glance of ur reply. I didn't know that but feel like I should have assumed It was possible. I always forget bout the settings goggles n sliders underneath the selection tools widget for dome reason. I think its the layout of GIMP..... but ill check it out.
Alright, ill be right bak.....
Edit: I'm editing this post just to say I'm not editing the post, LOL. U guys know wut words I meant to type. I'm trying to work on my OCD

Hi guys,
Well, after nearly two months of fairly hard work designing and (in some cases) redesigning, I'm happy to release my first pack of HD Icons to the Android Community. This is a project still very much in process, as I see myself adding more packs as time goes on...however I was happy enough with the first 68 icons to release them out in the wild.
For the more astute amongst you, you'll notice that I mentioned a zip file and readme file, etc. SORRY! My bad...I intended to do the zip file, then came across the possibility of a gallery and got so overwhelmed with the graphical possibilities that I clean forgot about the zip file.
This first post has now been changed, the zip file has been created (with the enclosed readme file), and can be found at the link below:
Download the Individual Icons here:
Visit the Icon Gallery
Download the Zip File (Full Icon Pack) here:
Full Icon Pack (with added Readme)
I genuinely hope that these icons find you well, and that you get a lot of use out of them. Please take a look at the readme file. It cant possibly explain everything, but I hope it gives you a start.
Regards
Mike
These are SWEET!!!!!!!!!!
very nice indeed.
If you ever get around to making more sets, I would gladly donate for a high gloss grey, or white with this kind of detail.
thanks again, wonderful work
Thanks mate...
Well, if you pm me or get me on gtalk, then we can talk about how much it would cost for me to convert all the icons into black and white versions
I've also just realised that there is no readme...I was going to zip these up.
Either email me or gtalk on [email protected]

thank you, these are killer icons. i really like the look of them. one thing i did notice when i save the icons to my desktop and then apply to my phone is that there are little white edges on the corners of the icons. is this by design? or am i missing something?
also, would it be possible to create an icon for the app drawer?
thanks again, really great work!
Top-notch icons, look great on my n1. If you're taking requests, might I suggest an icon for cyanogens DSP settings app or a graphic equalizer type look. Thanks for sharing.
Looks nice =)

Excellent looking.
Zipped them...
As long as you save them in .png format then the transparency should remain. If you save them in .jpg then you'll get white corners.
Is it all, or just some?
these are gorgeous
Awesome job Mike! I will be using these, thank you!
All saved as png at full quality/resolution.
Yeah these are sweet - thanks a lot for sharing with the rest of the community.
awesome! I would love to see a google voice icon! subscribed thanks so much.
Looks great..... looking forward to the second release

I created a bunch of gingerbread style icons that anyone is free to use if they please. The only thing I ask it that you give credit if you include them in a ROM or Theme. They are not perfect because I made them quickly, but they should be perfect looking on your phone. Use a program like BetterCut (QR code below) to apply these.

thank to joeshmoe08 for seperating the icons initially
Can I put these in launcher app? or do I have to use adw or launcher pro?
nice! really liked the camera with deep green center.
Yes. Putting into green would be great! But like "yzlvr" said above, it would be cool to have these into a launcher app, so we can use them when we want, and revert to colorful stock icons when wanted, giving everyone the best of both of the worlds.
Two things I would request.
Not all people have photochop. Please if you could separate them for ease of use?
Also.. if you could make an XDA Icon with the same type of color theme that would be awesome!

So there is no program to do it? Someone should make that. Right now I am just creating more icons. Technically for this type of phone they should be 72x72 according to Google guidelines, but I'm making them 70x70 and they looked fine on my phone.

You can just use Desktop Visulizer, or if you'd rather BetterCut. No need to put them into the apk's for everyone when it's a simple, free process for them to do it themselves.

Desktop visualizer will allow you to only make custom icons for your homescreen, not in your app drawer I believe. Bettercut I believe requires the open home launcher I believe to customize the icon into the app drawer, I believe.

You will have to change the xml files to change the font color though. And I have no idea what one it is. Maybe someone else will chime in on that.

Im pretty sure he means the black buttons that are underneath the pop-up. Theyre called common_b_button.9 and theyre in the com.htc.resources.apk. Theres regular and small ones, so just replace them with the default_buttons from the framework-res.apk that youre already using and they'll be uniform.

You need to open your ROM with 7zip.
Navigate to system/framework/framework-res.apk/drawable-hdpi and locate the icons that begin with "stat", these are whats shown in the stauts bar at the top of the screen.
Drag them out into a new folder and edit as you want
The notification bar you refer to is named "statusbar***.9.png" depnding on what you want to edit, there a couple of images, the very top bar holding the icons is named "statusbar_background.9.png"
.9 image editing is not for the faint hearted, nor are they scary they just need understanding
You can apply the new images by adb pushing, creating a flash zip or metamorph(free from the market)
Check out the guide in my signature
If you need any more help P.M me or create a new thread so we dont hijack this one.

So I was kind of wondering why the native horizontal resolution of our screen is larger then my original template. I started playing around with the ddms.bat in the SDK and sure enough the native resolution of the screen capture was 1280 horizontal. So I knew my original template was wrong and this explains the small amount of blurriness when the wallpaper is applied.
After a bit more playing in photoshop with the screen caps from ddms and this lovely aspect ration tool, I give you all the proper Xoom Wallpaper template. Same as last time the PSD is attached in the zip file below.

thank you for this! I am starting on some new wallpapers, and this will help greatly! Now I just need a DEV to make a small app (tablet only) for the wallpapers.
I gave up on looking for the "perfect" templates because in the end all you are doing is producing an image that looks good ONLY in landscape or ONLY in portrait.
You should include what the images are going to look like in both modes, just for brevity.

This is amazing how difficult this is to create or use a simple background for Xoom. A simple thing turned into a development effort !

Thats not really true. This would be the same issue on ANY android device it was used in landscape mode. The problem is that the Wallpaper crop tool is still setup for portrait use, thus we need a guide to make sure what we want visible shows correctly.
What I would really like to do is edit the crop tool to add in 4 additional guides that would show what portion of the image will show on the desktop. It would not be hard to do if I know what to edit.
xoom from Moto
I understand that. But what I do not get is releasing this OS for Xoom with so many quirks. I have worked in Android for phones for a couple years. I have worked with Moto in the past, and the combo Moto/Android is not a good combo on tablet. Moto still does not get the consumer.
Just my opinion. I like the xoom and that is why I am a bit frustrated. It was a chance to regain a bit of market share. But for a consumer iPAD(which I also have) the xoom is way too problematic.
Ok so I don't have photoshop but when I used this template with gimp...my images were still not fitting the screen properly
Just to explain what this does:
- The image portion of the wallpaper (almost) fits the screen perfectly.
- The top black bar only appears when in app drawer. That's why I a have "Applications" labeled there, so it appears in the background.
- The bottom black bar appears when in "+" or widgets view, which is the reason why I labeled it "Add-ons"
- The white all-around bar is the section that won't show up at all when using XoomWallpaper_2.zip
So here is a "template" I made in GIMP. I attached both the .xcf for GIMP and also the actual .png wallpaper for those who want to try it to see what it does.
EDIT: XoomWallpaper.zip is for larger images (eg. 1892x903) and XoomWallpaper_2.zip is for smaller images (eg. 1132x540)
PS: I use "wallpaper set and save" to set my wallpapers. So I don't need to crop the image.
