Hello! I recently bought a laptop which had 8gb RAM and i7 processor. When i first switched on the computer, the first thing i saw was whether i wanted 32 bit or 64 bit windows 7. i chose 32 bit (i completely forgot that i upgraded from 4gb RAM to 8gb RAM). then later after installing windows 7 professional, i looked at system and saw that only 2.66gb of the 8gb RAM was available!! I then realised that i had clicked 32 bit instead of 64 bit!! now i want the 64 bit windows 7 but i dont know how to get it. The windows 7 did not come in a disc (it came with laptop). Can anyone help me? Any help would would be appreciated!!
I've got plenty of time today so i'll see what i can find out.
What laptop is it?

Its the Toshiba Portege R830-2014U. i got a free 8 gb RAM upgrade from 4gb.
Unlucky, for more available ram until you can fix it, if its easy take out the other 4, but being the option on boot, try pressing f12 on startup and try boot a recovery partition?
(also I don't recommend taking it out )

In the Toshiba program group there should be a media creation utility, use it to create recovery media just in case, then assuming it's the same as their R700's, reboot the laptop and after the Toshiba screen keep tapping the F8 key to bring up the Windows boot menu options, one should be recovery, select that and you should then have the option to do a factory restore.
Ah what xxacers said, I assumed the key would be f12,

There you go Try the above and hopefully you'll be prompted which version to install again.

there is a "recovery media creator" program on my toshiba laptop. And it allows me to create recovery media. is that what you are talking about?
Create recovery media as a safety net. You'll never know when it may come in handy. It's the next step that xaccers detailed that should get you back to factory condition though.

Been rolling out about 30 R700's at work, which involved creating new base images with some of the required software pre installed, so did lots of restores to factory settings as Microsoft only allow 3 goes at creating a base image.
Very nice laptops they are too, although they need the latest bios and fingerprint drivers to work with Toshibas docking stations (something most home users will never use).
I've got a 4-5 year old P200 that is still going strong, and my older A100 has only just given up the ghost and that's after a year of 24/7 use sat on top of my Sky HD box as a media PC (ex's cat dropped a bed on it breaking the LCD but everything else still worked).
Just had a read of the user manual for your laptop. Once you've finished creating recovery media, to factory reset the machine the instructions were to turn it off and then back on whilst holding down the '0' key.
This should get you into the Toshiba recovery menu.

Yes, they will. Everything should be the same as it was when you turned it on for the very first time. If you have any important files on there that you don't want to lose, back them up now!

1. Install HTC Sync 2.0.25 onto your PC (it came with your phone) (maybe the custom driver works but I haven't tried it yet)
2. Power off your device
3. Remove the battery
4. Plug in your USB cable
5. Insert your SDcard (any kind, it doesn't matter the type, i have 6 different cards and class associations in my possesion and have rooted all of my co-workers DI's today using all 6 cards for proof of concept, 9 phone total [Everyone wanted Wireless Tether)
6. Insert your battery
7. Hold Vol. Down button + Power button
8. Start and loop (you can start this before now if you wish, just has to be before entering recovery)
9. After the phone scans the sdcard choose "Recovery" and press the Power button.
*10. SOLUTION: As soon as the white screen appears just casually (don't be a speed demon) click IN & OUT your sdcard and continue to do so (keep clicking it) when the black screen with triangle appears. You will be listening for the last windows chime that identifies the USB has registered. But, you want to stop with your last sdcard click IN just before the last windows chime is sounded through your PC speakers. You might need to do this a couple times just to get familiar with the timing of the windows sounds on your computer system. Those phones that don't have to do this and was rooted first have a much earlier timing of when the Exploit is active.

yes run the loop.
I tried this for about an hour with no result btw.
Worked for me
Seriously , this is the EXACT same steps that has been posted numerous times before. When you speak of a Solution as something Final it SHOULD NOT involve trial and error steps that require timing or just *luck*.
What a waste of a post and thanks for im sure getting peoples hopes up.

Yes you run the loop but not necessary to run in a loop. Yes it is about timing and similar posts have been made but I think I've written it with more detail.
These precise steps worked with the exact timing on 8 DIFFERENT phones yesterday. If its not working for you then perhaps you don't know how to follow directions well.

You know, just because it worked for you doesn't mean it will for others....
I CAN follow directions well, and I can't get it reproduced. (though it may be because I'm already rooted?)
Just keep clicking that card in your own intervals after the white screen and you will get it. With my own proof I can contest that there is a BIG misconception that this is only achieved during the White screen. NOT TRUE!!!
Those steps are what I experimented with trying to root my own DI and it worked. I was not convinced I'd get it to work on other phones since It's been days and countless hours trying to get mine to connect to ADB in Recovery. So, one of my co-workers let me try it on his phone with his different card type, and one co-worker after the other, success! The root I did on MY phone was with an sdcard I bought that came with some of the phones (SanDisk 2gb). I didn't get a free card from VZW. I had FASTER success with this card of all 6 cards I've rooted with. It took longer with the other cards, class 4 PNY, and off-brand class 6 cards. With the 2gb SandDisk class 2 it works on the first try for every phone I've tried.
Did you have HTC Sync installed as your active driver, I really can't say if the customer driver works as I haven't tried it myself? My laptop is the latest Sony VAIO F-series with Core i7 with Windows Ultimate x64. In Device Manager, while in HBOOT my phone only showed up as Android 1.0 and as HTC Bootloader.

No, and if you want to be in tune with the FINAL SOLUTION, your chakras must be aligned with Lady DI and her mysterious ways. I recommend balancing her on your head while you sleep for a fortnight, and then comes the sacrificial goat!
Seriously OP, I followed the last CARD CLICK prophet's advice and now my card mushes into lock--the DI just ain't built for the kind of abuse frenzied insert/ejection creates. I respect that you're good at what you do, but as others have found, teaching timing with http very difficult, at best.
I installed root by using an old laptop with XP... I had one point installed the HTC drivers. In this case, I had unistalled the HTC drivers and the HTC sync driver. Now I only used the SDK usb.inf drivers with the modified line for HTC incredible.

Believe it or not, I haven't seen it yet--just added it to my Netflix queue tho.
OP, can you get us a dmesg of you hitting the timing with your method? I want to see how it reacts to mounting/checking the sdcard devices more than once in recovery boot. I think good dmesg logs would help us all figure out what's going on here . . . .
From what I've seen

It depends on how quick you insert/remove. It takes anywhere form a 1/2 second to 1 second between the initial "Slot changed from 0 -> 1" to where the card is actually mounted. If you click too fast, you never that that "mount" so you'll never get root, since it seems like the "mount" is actually causing the error we need. If you slow down your insert/remove to a slower pace, you'll get numerous mounts of the sd card. This might increase your chances of getting root because you're mounting multple times, but it makes the mounts more random then precise timing, and unfortunately, to get our error that we need, the read needs to happen at a percise time. You've seen the dmesg that was posted by 'mite.
THANK YOU OP! Worked for me :-D

Yeah, and I'm still wondering why he was so 'elliptical' about explaining what was going on there. I still can't figure out if it's the mount process or the mounted card that triggers the adbd event, or if a delayed sdcard process simply pushes adbd start into the recovery window, when commands such as 'adb shell' can be received by daemon for a split/few seconds. Would be nice to hear his explanation of what system events are occurring outside of what is logged in dmesg. The OP says mount event can complete in recovery/black screen, you say sdcard mount must complete before black screen, that's a big diff.
I wonder if it's possible to create a host-side script that reads dmesg, watches for card mount and triggers 'adb shell' at a much faster rate than a simple win shell 'loop'. That would be killer, and would eliminate all need for card insertion timing, IMO.

I don't think so. Don't have the devices in front of me right now, but I believe that the phone is disconnected from the PC (that first do - do) before our window of opportunity, which means the pc is not communicating with the phone at all. So if (big if) I am correct, nothing local to the PC can be done to initiate anything AT THE TIME that we need it to.

(never get any free time it seems) I'm been trying to check in with you guys as often as I can. It's brutal today because we have Maintenance tonight throughout the morning.
This is what I found by myself to work for me after trying for 3 days originally.

I was googling WebTop hacks for the Bionic to see if any came up but it did show ones on the Atrix that were pretty frickin awesome if we could get this up and running on our phones
WebTop2sd 1.1.0
Imagine running a full version of Ubuntu instead of the lite version that is preloaded in the WebTop OS. Finally we could run XBMC or OpenOffice through the power of our phones
Find anything? The closest I have come across is a flashable zip for the Atrix but no full Ubuntu for the Bionic.

I have been searching for the past 24 hours to no avail... I guess we just need to wait a few weeks or so for our Bionic version of UbunTop.
I was thinking of trying to overwrite all of OSH on my Bionic with the OSH dir from UbunTop package... but I decided against it. Primarily because if it did actually work, I'd still be on jaunty instead of maverick (newer ubuntu). So there'd be all sorts of incompatibilities with stuff I'd be wanting to try.
So, I guess I'll keep waiting and searching Can't be long now...
Ok, so I have gotten as far as being able to load ubuntu 10.10 w/ gnome panel but when i try to upgrade to 11.04 it tells me that it needs 10.5m of space. I partitioned my 32gb sd card 50/50 so there is a ton of room. Disk Usage Analyzer says there is no mount point. Everything in Ubuntu is trying to load to /, not osh/ maybe??
Anyone have any ideas?
Edit: Any installs from synaptic can install just fine, its only from ubuntu updater thats giving me issues

Ok, start with the webtop2sd mod then, check out
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1281722
Once your done there, go into synaptic and install gnome and ubuntu. When you start doing things, it will give you a few errors of items needed to install/uninstall, install/uninstall them as needed. It will also give you an error about "Bluez", when you get there you will need to "completely remove" it. Once everything is installed, restart your phone.
Reopen "start-oshwt-2.sh", remove the xfce panel and desktop you added earlier and add:
sfalv -i "gnome-panel"
sfalv -i "ubuntu-desktop"
Save and restart
Back into webtop and you should have a nice new ubuntu webtop.
I recommend doing a complete uninstall of firefox then reinstall it, it will give you a more complete firefox.
Openoffice works too.
At this point I am stuck, synaptic works just fine but when I try Ubuntu Update, it gives the disk space error. Still working on it.
not sure if this will help but I was having alot of problems getting certain things to install and I did a:
apt-get install --reinstall coreutils
fix alot of problems for me

So webtop2sd is absolutely necessary before we can install that webtop patch? I'm not sure what went wrong when I tried doing the webtop2sd once before, but I got stuck at the M loading screen and had to completely restore my phone from RSD... So I'm a bit nervous to try again, lol. But I will if it's necessary for Ubuntu
EDIT:
OK, I am attempting the webtop2sd process again. This time I partitioned the SD from the windows program "MiniTool Partition Wizard..." as suggested. It is currently synchronizing... I'm keeping my fingers crossed

Well, youll want to do it for no other reason than disk space, installing gnome, ubuntu, etc takes quite a bit. Even though webtop2sd says that it changes /etc/tomoyo, i found that there was both the original and the "toy" folder after install. I went again and changed the folder name to tomoyo1 and never had a boot problem after.

The only thing specifically related to my process that I left out was that in the guide for webtop2sd, I took that authors advice and used the partition tool included in his post to partition my sd card although i doubt thats your issue. If you get hung up, between the posts are all the files need to go back to fully stock, that's where i started from and, not that is should make a difference but im using the (r3)blur3d 2.0 rom.
Any more progress?
Has anyone else gotten any further with this?
I think this has SO MUCH potential and I really wish there were more updates and/or interest in this.
I (think) I have webtop2sd working correctly, but I still encounter the low memory issues when I use even 2 or more browser tabs in Firefox simultaneously. I saw the other thread about adding the swap partition, perhaps I need to go that route instead?
I have a class 10 SD card in my phone, and I did allocate 3GB to the webtop2sd partition, but I know there are some inherent limitations of OSH based on Motorola's original design.
I just wish it could be made more powerful and viable. The idea of carrying around a full-blown desktop OS on my phone almost makes me salivate.
Thanks!

Yeah, MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition! It's a great tool! I used that to partition mine as well... the biggest partition for my sdcard-ext (like 9GB) then almost 5GB for the webtop2sd partition... then whatever was left for a swap partition (created in MiniTool Wizard also). I've never noticed a low memory warning, but I really haven't used my webtop much. Just today I got the bluetooth mouse and keyboard in the mail, so I'm thinking it'll be able to get more usage. Oh, and I was running stock, just rooted (forever rooted) and NOT deodexed... BUT now I am running on the HIFT3R rom ... I'm gonna try out the TH3ORYPAKX "Blurry" now... I tried the ICS Blurry, but I don't like the color scheme, and various little things... Hoping the Blurry is more to my liking.
But it does seem as though I have more power/rights for some reason, perhaps cause it's deodexed or perhaps because it has a lot of mods built-in? Who knows... I just know it seems a lot better.
I *just* got thru with the sudo apt-get update at lunch time... getting ready to go back home and start playing around. This time with the bluetooth mouse and keyboard! woot!
I did get the KFCE4 working a while back, as in the guide...
sfalv -i "xfdesktop"
sfalv -i "xfce4-panel"
BUT I didn't really like it for some reason... I want the gnome-panel and ubuntu-desktop but no matter what I've tried, I have always ended up with poor results... not once have I seen the gnome-panel (which would be on the bottom right? the webtop-panel will always be on the top, unless I rem out that line too) And I'm not sure what I'll see if the ubuntu-desktop ever works...
But I'm dying to find out
I'll let you know my results...

Rob, I must agree 100% ... the idea of having a fully loaded, ready to roll, desktop OS on my smartphone is mind-blowing! The lapdock is great and all, but too expensive. Having the alternative ability to hook my phone up to my or my friends HDTV when I visit, whip out my bluetooth mouse and keyboard... then queue up a movie, or show them some awesome websites, or let them surf the web... or work on some overdue projects... it's quite appealing! You could even hook it into a projector and give a presentation... from your PHONE, lol.
...
That being said, though. I have ran into some discouragement. I have a monitor here at work with DVI input, and a HDMI to DVI adapter cable. The native res is like 1680x1050. In the beginning, I was able to hook my Bionic up to it and webtop just fine. It looked stretched cause it was using a 4:3 resolution, but it still worked. Now, it doesn't work. Says something like it's unsupported res or something (on the monitor screen for a second). So, I try it on every monitor I have handy (I work in the IT Dept)... not a single one of them worked!!! But I go home and hook it up to my 1080p DLP 60" and it works just fine. Hmmm...... I wish I could figure this one out.
I'd like to know the solution if you find it. It seems to be running the desktop at 1280x1024. I've changed the resolution with xrandr to 1680x1050 and the proportions look right, but the actual resolution it's outputting is still 1280x1024 so all of the pixels look weird and fuzzy. It's as if the virtual desktop is only 1280x1024. I tried creating my own xorg.conf file and setting up a 1680x1050 resolution mode and virtual line but it still doesn't work. Any ideas from anyone else?

I got it working on this monitor here at work again... what I did was just make sure I went down to like 1024x768 resolution while I had it on my HDTV at home before I unplugged it. For some reason, if I left it on the 720p, it would stay there and wouldn't be recognized on any other monitor (unless it was capable of actual 720p). Automatic 'new' display detection looks like it is built in, but doesn't seem to work most of the time.
On another note... My bluetooth mouse and keyboard have some crazy, 1 to 2 second lag ONLY in webtop. I was doing something last night and the mouse sprung into life... the lag completely went away, on the keyboard too! But after unplugging and hooking back up, the lag is back... If I unplug the monitor, there is absolutely no lag with the mouse or keyboard on just the phone itself. Could this be the 'Bluez' thing you were talking about Hastaply?

Yeah, it could be. The bluetooth drivers in Ubuntu dont play well with webtop but if your keyboard and mouse are paired with the phone and then you enter into webtop they should still stay connected. Under synaptic, search for and 'completely remove' Bluez.

Tried uninstalling Bluez and it did not alleviate the bluetooth device lag issues. And again, these issues ONLY happen in webtop. Sometimes they go away, the mouse & keyboard (/and*or/ the PS3 controller) work fine without any lag at all, but that is only like 20 percent of the time if that. It could be working, I disconnect, 5 min later hook it back up to webtop and the lag is back...
But, I really don't know what to do there so... I will just continue on with getting my webtop the way I want it.
I really would like to know how to replace 'metacity' window manager with something else. So much so that the .sh files and such that are called upon Webtop launch actually call the new window manager instead of metacity... I want to completely eliminate all reference to it and replace it with whatever window manager I want... like kwin or enlightenment ... but I certainly don't want to break the aiw (motorola phone window) in any way.
I was able to figure out why ubuntu-desktop wasn't finishing install. When dpkg got to configuring stuff it couldn't complete samba-common due to a bad readlink/symlink... and if samba-common couldn't complete, neither could smbclient, and in turn ubuntu-desktop. After deleteing the bad readlink and rerunning dpkg --configure -a ... the problem was resolved
I'm slowly learning how to get stuff fixed... but the more complicated I get, the easier it is to hose the whole webtop and then it's restore time!
Anyhow... progress, slowly but surely.
Is there a way to use webtop2sd AND the swap space hack?
I think I have the webtop2sd piece working correctly, but I still get low memory available errors when only running a single tab in Firefox.
Full Ubuntu someday would be nice, but for now I would just like to have the ability to have a stable and reliable browser. I am not much of a Linux guru and don't need to run native apps (at least right now). Should I just undo the webtop2sd app and go back and follow the directions to enable the swap space hack?
Thanks, any experienced advice would be appreciated.

So, I'm currently trying to help a friend with his netbook. It came with XP and a password on the bios preventing me from entering the bios boot menu. I managed to get XP to boot straight to a flash drive with PLOP installed on it, then use it to boot to another flash drive with a livedisk of Linux Mint. From there, I installed Mint on a separate partition, doing nothing to XP partition other than resize it. My friend requested I get rid of the XP partition, so I asked him if installing a new copy of Mint on the whole drive would be cool with him. It was, so I formatted the entire drive (removing the ability to boot into PLOP).
Now he wishes to have standard Ubuntu on this same system. The problem is, now I have no idea how to boot into any partition other than the main one, and I can't resize that partition while its mounted. I came here because, generally speaking, this forum has some of the most tech savvy people I've ever seen. I patted my back for getting any other OS on this rig, but little did I know the work had only just begun.
TL;DR: Does anyone here know how to force a netbook, with no bios boot menu access, running Linux Mint, to boot from a flash drive? Any help would be appreciated.
PS: This is a question thread, but its not really related to any kind of phone, thus I felt it shouldn't be put into the Q&A forum. If that is in error, my sincere apologies. Mods, feel free to move this as you see fit.
Have you tried burning Ubuntu to a disc and inserting it to the drive? That is if there is one. There may be a key that you hold during a power on that will force it to boot from another device. I forget which one it is for me l, though I want to say f11, it is different for every device. Look into it for that particular model.

Regrettably, this netbook doesn't have a cd-rom drive. And, like I say, the bios is password protected, so I can't get into the boot menu. It requires that password, which I cannot remove without knowing it, since yanking the CMOS battery still won't get rid of the blasted thing.
Here maybe this will help you. It seems helpful.
It would help to know what kind of netbook it is. Also, I have never came across a computer that came with a BIOS password on it from factory. To reset it, open it up, look for the CMOS battery, if it doesn't have one, find the CMOS 'jumpers' and short them out. Knowing the exact model will really help me.
The netbook is an (acer?/asus? Don't have it in front of me) aspire one. Apologies if I made it seem like it came with the password already installed, my friend got it from his father, who in turn got it from a friend. The original owner put the pass on, and he died about 8 months ago. Not likely we'll be able to get it from him now. Also, I've tried yanking the CLOSE battery already. We let it sit with it out for a straight twelve hours. No change.
Still need the exact model number, but you can try this: http://macles.blogspot.com/2008/08/clearing-cmos-of-acer-aspire-one.html
Thanks. He lives a few hours away and I wouldn't trust him with taking the thing apart, but I'll give it a try next time I see him.
Hopefully no one gets upset I'm asking this here but I figured it would be ok since I'm in the "off topic" section and I can always find answers I need regarding my Droid so I figured you tech savy ppl could help me
Toshiba Satellite Laptop screen barely comes on?
I've been searching everywhere (online) for answers.
Long story short, my laptop screen stopped turning on. Even if solid the lights come on (AC/Pwr), I hear the internal fan, hard drive, etc. if I try and Turn the laptop on 10x the screen may only come on twice (if I hold down f1 and f2) It's windows 7. I reinstalled the OS (via partition) and still had the error. (cmos needs replacing too I hear but ppl say that won't give me errors like I get)
What do the errors in these pictures mean? Is the problem hardware or software or bios?

I think its the software. Try rebooting into a dvd or a flash drive (if you know that). If that works you are good to go
On the first look, apparently u have ram misconfigured on bios settings
The bios could have loaded one of the predefined settings and its incompatible with ur ram (it could be because something messed those settings or u have ram with different speeds/sizes
Take a note of every setting in bios and try loading the default settings to see if that error still occurs, if still exist those errors, go to the ram settings and look for one option that says something like allow compatibility
If there are no errors, put back the noted bios settings except the ones for the ram.
Or u have a busted ram module
Anyway more info about the laptop would do wonders in path to the correct solution

Does any one know if it's possible to wipe a Nook HD+ Demo unit. I came into possession of one and I'd like to wipe it to make a standard version

You might try the 8 failed boot procedure. Just interrupt the boot 8 times in a row by powering off after it tries to boot for a couple of seconds. On the 8th boot it will wipe everything and restore to factory. It may just go to stock and it may go to demo mode.

Not yet on internal memory. But if you look in the HD+ development forum you will see that an early version of CM10 was released for putting on SD.

I view the current state of CM10 on Nook HD+ as pre-Alpha BTW.
And I wonder what's the different between retail and demo? Or is Demo is just an "skip OOBE" version? In that case, a simple factory reset might do.
Try going to settings (tap the upper right corner) > All Settings > Device Info > Erase & Deregister.
I tried the factory reset. And it seems to work except when I try to register the device. What would be a "skip oobe"?
That's why people need to start reading. It's possible that B&N will not recognize the demo unit as one of their retail device whether by serial number or some other thing. You can still try 8bootloop which will change the development ID, but not the serial. The "Skip OOBE" is pretty much similar to a demo(note that I never seen the demo at store before), I guess. It let you play with the nook w/o register.

The instructions are kind of buried in the general thread. Look here. Or for B&N instructions look here.
I would avoid registering it with b&n. Unless they've started a demo unit giveaway program, they track the serial numbers.
Im curious, when you got it did it still have the b&n bootable sd card in it? That's how they put these in demo mode, rather than the button combo used on the NC.

You have a demo unit? Sorry if I'm incorrect, but did you happen to steal one of these? If so, shame on you.

Interesting. The ones at my local store all say they are TEST's Nook just like it does when you skip oobe.
You don't need a card to get into demo mode.
The skip OOBE process lets you put the device into demo mode. I ran mine as "Test's Nook" for awhile in hopes of capturing a system image before the OTA update hit me. But I spent too much time futzing with the ADB drivers and forgot that I had wifi on.
Fortunately, the first two updates didn't break root.
Wierd. My local store was given sdcards for all HD/HD+ demo units that put them in a mode that cycles through videos of product features. Does it do that when you skip oobe?
And how would we know that? At least for me, I don't have the sdcard you talking about.

I do have a demo unit and it was given to me.
I've tried reboot in and a firmware restart still no results. I have one more unit I can try. So we'll see what happens. Anyone else have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

No, it doesn't play videos automatically when you skip registration. But it does say Test's Nook at the top instead of a profile name.

How would we know what? I know bn sent cards to stores because I worked for the company for 11 years and still have a lot of friends there.

The SD cards being sent it true, but only partially. The SD cards are put into the devices before startup and then booted from it specifically. Then the FW gets flashed with the information that is on the SD cards. Once the device is flashed/updated with the data from the SD card you do NOT need to keep the card in the device. In fact you should not keep it in the device.
To ENABLE demo mode you have to go to All Settings > Device Information and then press the Volume Up button and tap with your finger just above the volume bar that shows up at the top of the screen. Another menu pops up with a box asking for Demo mode (among other information). If it's checked, uncheck it. But just keep in mind that the demo information is still flashed onto the device and I'm not aware of any way to restore it or erase it.
But once it's out of Demo mode you should be able to deregister the device (has happened at my store one or twice already). But like some others have mentioned, the serial numbers for each demo machine are tracked so it might be flagged as stolen.
