I have read through numerous threads on how to flash different roms, or flashing on the stock rom. I have in fact messed up and just now managed to get my phone back into download mode. It has taken 2 days to get this and in those 2 days I have not managed to find a way to flash a stock rom, or any rom back onto the phone if the files were not there to begin with.
How can I get files onto my Cappy if I can only manage to get to download mode?
Thanks. I will most likely donate something to someone who can help me out

Ok. First don't worry, your phone is fine.
1. make sure you have drivers installed on your pc, and that your usb chord it's plugged into the back of your computer-(important) not the front. And dint attempt this during a storm our any other reason power might go out.
2. Download the one click odin program in the following link, unzip it to desktop, and keep it for future use, it's handy.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
[STOCK ROM] Odin3 One-Click Downloader and Drivers CAPTIVATE ONLY
3. Open the odin program. Put phone in download mode, connect to pc. Once the 1 click program shows the yellow com box, hit"start"
Warning: this process involves flashing bootloaders and it's possible to hard brick your phone. That means you would be out of luck. I can not be responsible etc. etc.
if this is successful, you will be on stock 2.1.

Odin3 failed. I guess I have another problem on my hands now.
Did you run as Admin? Are you using a USB port from the Mother board? (not the front ones) Did Oding actually detect the phone?

Well it was a thought

Another failed attempt. That was attempting a stock rom. I haven't been able to find packages for heimdall yet but I will continue to look.
If I could just get the Rogers boot image back I would be able to at least get them to fix it.
I managed to find a Heimdall package but it fails at the same spot. I don't understand how nothing seems to work. I thought this phone was unbrickable.
Its not bricked,
Open odin b4 connecting phone!

I have tried that. It either freezes on File Analysis or Setup Connection.
I try Heimdall and it gives an error:

I try command line Heimdall and it says "Failed to open file cache.rfs yet it is there. If I remove it, then it says the same thing about every other file that follows.

I'm having trouble flashing back to JF6 after a failed JH7 OTA update.
I can't flash back to stock firmware after following a lot of the directions posted around the forum. Odin One Click is all bank when I click start and I immediately get "All threads completed 0/0" and nothing happens. I've tried several different orders of operations in regards to putting into downloading mode and connecting to the PC, etc.
Also, Odin3 does the same thing after selecting the PIT file and firmware from samfirmwares. I get the same message and nothing happens.
Is there a more specific guide someone can point me to or share some insight? Thanks in advance.

How are you using odin?
The process is the same for either ODIN one-click or ODIN3
Your phone MUST be in download mode.
You will get a black screen with a yellow triangle, saying "DOWNLOAD"
The process to get into download (works for me) is by powering off the phone.. odin must already be turned on in your computer. <<IF you are using win7, run it as admin... right-click then "Run as Administrator">>
With the phone powered off, press and hold both volume buttons, then plug in the USB cable to the phone. The cable must already be plugged in to the computer.
Next, start ODIN and wait for it to finish.
This should be a foolproof method.
I am having the same issue...
I followed the exact directions on the thread title '[STOCK ROM] Odin3 One-Click Downloader and Drivers CAPTIVATE ONLY 'and I get into "Download mode" but nothing happens. I click start on Odin (the one downloaded from that thread) and it *instantly* says <OSM> All threads complete. (succeed 0 / failed 0).
What am I doing wrong?
Samsung Captivate running 2.1 rooted with "the beast". I bricked it last night trying to get OTA gps "fix" notice to stop bugging me.
Any tips? Thanks!

What OS are you running on your computer? Is it win7? If it is, make sure you run ODIN as administrator. Also, is ODIN on prior to connecting phone to computer?
Try following these steps:
1. Plug in USB cable to computer
2. Turn on ODIN (run as administrator)
3. Turn off phone (not connected to anything)
4. Hold down both volume buttons on phone
5. Connect USB cable to phone while doing STEP4
6. Click start in ODIN
This should work. If you are using ODIN3 instead of one-click, then make sure to set .PIT and PDA files properly, and to click re-partition if you are trying to unbrick your phone
Thank you....
I'm using Win 7 64-bit.
I've tried on both ways, prior and after, just to see if either worked.
The version of Odin is Odin3excution v1.00 downloaded from the aforementioned thread. (yes execution is misspelled on the actual program).
I am running it as administrator using the right click, run as function.
I can't link anything because I'm a new user (BAH! ) but it says Odin3 One-Click Downloader on the top in black.
ALL the boxes are blank. Every thing is blank...thank you!

I'm having the same issue. I'm on WinXP, SP2 (old computer, I know.) I'm normally a Mac user, this is the only PC I have.
I'm using the same Odin One Click version Drew stated, with all boxes blank. Perhaps a drivers issue?
look up the odin one-click thread and DL the appropriate drivers and try again
As soon as you get into download mode and connected odin should recognize your phone - is odin seeing your phone?
No, windows is a POS. I've downloaded so many different drivers and each time I get an error saying it failed. I've literally tried every Captivate 64 bit win 7 driver out there, I downloaded KIES and tried that too.
I'm *really* close to dumping windows and android and just going full Apple. I am so sick of this crap and I've always hated Apple products (almost to the point of being extreme) but...if ya can't beat 'em, join 'em.
I've spent the better part of 2 days trying to get this to work and the main issue, from what I'm slowly finding out, is windows wont recognize the phone and keeps dumping it before it gets connected.
It's just really too much at this point. I can go buy *shudder* an iMac, an iPhone *double shudder* and I'll be up and running in 15 minutes.
F8ck this noise.
Try this link for 64bit windows drivers.
Before you install, go to control panel, and delete all previous drivers.
Reboot your computer once before re-installing the drivers above.
http://http://www.mediafire.com/?3dh4d6up72me9re
I'm pretty sure you won't need to install .net framework for Odin to work.
But if after drivers it still doesn't work, try installing .net framework 4.0 as well. You will need that installed to root anyways.

Nope, ODIN does not recognize my phone. I've tried it a few more times using the correct sequence and got nothing. Even reinstalled the drivers and rebooted the PC (without my phone connected).
Issue has been resolved. I tried it on a newer system running WinXP and got flashed back to stock with no problem... although the OTA update failed again.... but I've got the one-click version of that too.
Thanks for everyone's help!

I was trying to flash the overclock kernel when my phone just shut off midway through the process. I left it for a while and now I am stuck with the phone/computer screen. I have tried to boot up plugged in with odin running, unplugged with odin running. I used just the down and power, I used just up and power, I used both and power, and still no luck. My phone goes straight to the screen when I plug it in to the computer before I even try to do anything.
How can I get back to download mode?
Looks like you tried all but one method:
1) Start Odin
2) Press and hold up and down vol buttons
3) Plug in usb while holding buttons
See if that helps.
If you have the adb shel you can start a new shell and cd to the directory with the adb executable and run the following:
cd \your\adb\directory\
adb shell
At that point you should see a new prompt with a '$' type:
reboot download
Your screen should show "Downloading Do Not Disconnect Device" indicating that your phone is in download mode.
By starting odin I assume you mean just opening the program? If so, I just end up in the android system recovery with the <!> triangle and the android in the back ground.
Doing the adb reboot download thing left me with the same problem "Segmentation fault".
With your phone unplugged from the computer, remove you sim, battery and external sd(If you have one) and then open the odin application...
Once odin opens, connect the phone via usb and odin should list the phone in the application window.
I believe the system recovery will allow you to execute odin. If your phone is not fully booted to the os then it should let you apply the odin recovery. If you connect your phone with odin open, and odin recognizes the device, then you should be able to apply the fix.

I've been trying for the past couple of hours to flash back to stock 2.1 so I can load Serendipity onto my phone which will hopefully solve some of the hardware problems I've been having on stock 2.2 (rooted). My Captivate is an At&t phone that I use on the Canadian Rogers network.
Problems:
- Battery Life
- Nobody Can hear me during voice calls or I sound far away
- Random Shutdowns (Captivate keep alive helps but drains battery even more)
I have tried several methods to flash back to stock, with varying results.... none of them successful.
Using AIO Captivate Toolbox it hangs on file analysis

<ID:0/004> Please wait..
<ID:0/004> Checking MD5 finished Sucessfully..
<ID:0/004> Leave CS..
<ID:0/004> SetupConnection..
I have removed the battery, restarted the phone, restarted the programs, restarted the computer, removed sim and sd cards numerous times in different orders...
I've reinstalled the Samsung USB drivers (which solved the problem when I was trying to root 2.2 on my phone)
I apologize if my problem has been solved on another thread but I've tried searching everywhere online to no avail. I really want to try Serendipity but things are not looking good!!
If you have a Captivate, try using DesignGears One Click Odin http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989. Make sure that you are in Download mode before trying to flash and make sure that Odin is open before you plug in your phone. Also, you might have a bad cable or you might want to try to plug in your USB cable into a different port. Make sure the USB port on your computer you are using is a USB port directly on the computer. The ones on the back of a desktop work really well.
Good luck!!
I tried the One Click Odin but it was a no go... it hung at file analysis. So I thought I would try Heimdall but even after installing the drivers it said "failed to detect compatible device". Installing the right drivers was how I originally managed to get the root for 2.2 working, but it doesn't seem to have any effect on what I'm doing now.
I've been at this for a few hours now, and I'm not sure what else to do. I can live with crappy battery life but it's a pain when nobody can hear me.
BTW I'm using an iMac and when I plug the Captivate directly into the back Odin doesn't recognize it but if I plug it into the USB hub it does... weird. I don't think there is a problem with the cable because I've used it to root as well as when I updated to 2.2 via Kies.
Any more suggestions? I really appreciate the help!!

+1 odin is a windows tool.
Oh I have Boot Camp running Win 7 and Odin works fine on that. I simply tried Heimdall on both platforms to see if I could get it to work but no cigar.
Okay I've tried both Heimdall and Odin on two other computers, one running Win 7 and the other Vista. I managed to get the drivers to install on Zadig for Heimdall (the device wasn't even showing up on either of the Win 7 computers), but Heimdall still stated "failed to detect compatible device". Maybe time to start looking for an alternative to Heimdall and Odin? I'll keep my progress posted!
From Win7, did you happen to Right-click Odin and select "Run as administrator?" This is a simple thing, but Odin always gets stuck at that point if I forget to do it. Also, Odin should be up and running before placing the phone in d/l mode.
Weirdly odin will not detect my captivate even with drivers installed normally. The only way i get it to work is to reinstall drivers that come with AIO captivate toolbox each time i need to use odin...almost as if the drivers disappear every so often. Running win7 x64 btw

I have a friend that bricked his phone by trying to install Cognition 5 v2.
Basically it would only boot loop the ATT logo. I purchased a jig and got it into download mode.
I have downloaded Odin 3 one click and Odin 3 1.81. From what I read I should use One Click, so I fired it up. I plugged in the phone and at first the pc would not recognize it, but by plugging and unplugging it found it. It showed 0:[com:9} in yellow in the box, so I clicked Start, and it ran its start processes:
<ID:0/009> Added!!
<ID:0/009> Odin v.3 engine (ID:9)..
<ID:0/009> File analysis..
<ID:0/009> Set PIT file..
<ID:0/009> DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!
So here is where I stand, after multiple attempts it just sits at this point. I have waited up to 30 min for it, and it just sits there. Do I need to wait longer? or is there something else to try?
Odin never turns green and shows a blue bar, plus the phone never shows a blue loading bar either.

Running as admin: Yes
USB Hub: No, plugged into back USB port on tower
I know this is going to sound dumb, but the exact steps you are doing? You should run ODIN in admin then plug your phone in download mode to the pc. It should appear and work.
Start Odin3 1.00 as an admin
Put battery into phone, plug in jig, unit goes into download mode
Plug phone into Micro USB PC cable (sometimes may take multiple plugins for it to recognize.
Once recognized in odin, I click start
Wait.....nothing.....
From what I see it looks like it is having issues with the repartitioning of it.
I also tried to use Odin 1.81 with aJH2 pit and tar file, and it just sits on Set Partition.
It shouldn't take multiple plugins. It could be a faulty cable. Also try another computer as well.
Ya, think I am going to try a diff comp, mine has had odin and stuff before, could cause issues. I will let you know what I find out.
Tried second coputer and a no go with it as well.
i downloaded heimdall just to try and I get it installed and connected, but when I go to flash it says this:

Don't worry. Just restart the phone into download mode again - have Odin ready, connect and hit start.
This happens because your phone stops looking for connection after a while so simply don't make him wait too long

Thanks, my PC keeps turning off and restarting when I hit flash... Can I do this on a Mac computer?
Of course it can. You're on Bootcamp right ? What version of Windows ?
No idea why it keeps restarting...
One more thing though - if your PC keeps crashing/restarting during the process ( or just barely before it starts in this case ) i'd strongly recommend using another PC to flash it. You don't want a crash whilst flashing - now this may cause problems.

Don't know a thing about flashing and rooting using Mac, but this looks like a Samsung USB driver issue to me, i.e. your computer cannot connect to your Note because of missing or corrupt drivers.
You can find standalone drivers here, or you can download and install Kies (it contains the drivers).

Use bootcamp, install windows, install kies so all the drivers are there, and try it on your mac. Once done you can get rid of bootcamp partition to clean up.
