Can't make nandroids

Can some one please help me my phone will create a nandroid but wen I go to restore it I get an error no matter wat I do

Two things usually cause this, either the folder is renamed and has a space in the name, or you are low on battery and need to charge your phone (greater than 50% is best)

Also have a close to full SDCard will cause it.

Nope no spaces in the names of the folder or the folder in it and my battery is full n it won't restore ill send the exact error message

well it restored this time but after 3 hours on the htc screen i pulled the battery

I have this same issue.
I just created a new backup (97% battery, over 1/2 of SD card mem free). Here's a list of the files that it created:
boot.img
misc.img
recovery.img
system.img
When I look at one of the 2 backups that will actually restore, it shows these files:
boot.img
cache.img
data.img
misc.img
nandroid.md5
recovery.img
system.img
Any idea why this is happening?

No one has any thoughts on this?

What recovery are you running?

I'm running 1.5.2

You might want to try and use a newer version of recovery. There is 1.6.2 and also darch has one that he OC'd.
I had this problem before when I copied my sdcard to my computer and reformatted my card to fat32 only. When I tried to restore a backup it was trying to write files to the sdcard but there was not an ext file system on it so it would abandon the process.

did you repartition your sd and it worked?

I flashed 1.6.2, and I still can't get a good backup.
The upside is I still have one that works, the downside is that it's from 6/1.
I would greatly appreciate any thoughts on other things to try.

Need help rebuilding emmc

Ok fellas, my nook color has been out of commission for over 2 months. I can boot from sd but not from internal emmc.
Sam has been helpin me but it has been difficult due to him being in a different part of the world. From what i've been told my emmc is corrupt and my partitions need to be rebuilt or formatted.
I have tried the different fixes here and still i am stuck on the N screen.
I am trying to return my NC to stock form.
I will let Sam chime in also. I know there are a lot of talents on this forum and pretty sure this can be fixed.

Hi,
As Wendell said, I've tried helping him with his corrupt emmc.
The problem is:
The emmc semms to be corrupt, or at least some sectors of it. Wendell cannot return it, because it boots to CWR. That's the strange part, though the disk seems totally corrupt, it still seems to be able to boot. I guess some sectors and still working. But I don't know of any way to find out which..
This is what I know so far:
The internal emmc generally returns I/O error when trying to use fdisk or parted.
But, somehow, depending on the bs and count, I can dd /dev/zero to it.
Even after having dd zeros to it, it still seems to boot to internal CWR. So, the dd isn't working. Still don't know why, or how to remedy to it.
If someone could give us a clue or two here, it would be very much appreciated. I must admit I'm really no HDD expert..

Any idea how the partition became corrupt? Did you dual-boot?

Partition became corrupt after flashing a couple of the very first OC kernels. Not sure if thats what caused it but wouldn't boot past N screen. Since then i have been trying to fix it by doing the several fixes to no avail and possibly damaging the emmc even more.

Please correct if I'm wrong but i think i need the stock recovery for this method. Unfortunately, the stock was replaced with CWR and now i cannot even get rid of CWR off the internal. If I could do it again, I would not place CWR on internal but rather run it off sd. I installed CWR via rom manager because the sd method was not yet available.

Try option number 3 in the thread I made in the general forum. the clockworkmod recover + stuck at " " screen. Flashing cwm via rom manager can cause corrupted /boot partition

I have tried those methods to no avail. I can currently boot into CWR via 'home+N' but here is the crazy part, I cannot use the zip that sam made to remove CWR from emmc or even try to update to 3.0.1.0 via the CWR zip. My CWR on the emmc will not budge at all.
Sam, has even tried to erase my emmc totally from being able to boot to CWR just so I can get it looked at by B&N but CWR will not budge.

Excuse my ignorance, but will linux run off the sd card on the nook?
What about using something like GParted? Perhaps the USB bootable image on the sd card might work?

I know you are all trying to help. But please keep in mind that there aren't any obvious answers here. The emmc is corrupt. You can't flash anything to it.. and as I already stated, parted won't work either, it returns I/o error.
The only strange thing is that the nook still boots.. I can't understand that as the emmc lacks any partition table.
We need someone with hdd repairing experience. None of the answers found on existant threads will help Wendell..

The boot may be from real hardware/non-eemc rom.
I know you said it's a emmc error - but have you tried to flash back to stock using CWM off of the SD with thecubed's MonsterRoot pack?

Can you fdisk the partitions... then dd image img files to it?
I don't know if you will have any way of saving mmcblk0p2 and 3 to save your device specific information.

Here is what i would try.
First thing, get a cwm sd card setup that is bootable and has a decent amount of space so you can backup your emmc. The cwm sd card will allow us to adb in, but not worry about having any emmc partitions mounted (booting to a full android image would want at least the mmcblk0p2 partition mounted).
Make sure you have adb setup and working, so you can adb in once you've booted into cwm from the sd card. Make sure you know how to use adb pull and adb push to get files onto and off of the device easily.
Boot from the card, adb shell into the device. make sure when you are doing dd commands you are pulling from and writing to image files in a directory on the sd card, not on the emmc. you probably shouldn't even have any emmc partitions mounted at all.
Note: dd and bzip2 are both on the cwm 3.0.10 ramdisk, dunno about the earlier versions
I'd make a backup image of your emmc just in case things go from bad to worse:

dd if=/dev/mmcblk0 | bzip2 -9 > backup.img.bz2
This will take a while.
Now you'll need a MBR from someone with a stock partition table (i'm dual booting so mine probably won't work, otherwise i'd make one for you). Any volunteers?

Once you have this file, just dump the image onto your emmc.

dd if=mbr.img of=/dev/mmcblk0
once you have a working partition table, you should be on your way to using the standard recovery techniques peppered throughout the forums.
btw, this won't fix any corruption in the extended partition table, that would take a little more effort (i'd have to read up on where/how that info is saved). Also obviously if it's a hardware problem rather than just corrupted data you have more problems than this will fix.
p.s. cwm loading witch a corrupt partiton table isn't that weird imho. the bootloader has barely over 400 bytes to load up the boot file and hand things off, it's probably not taking a close look at the partition map when it does this.

I know am probably being a stupid noob...have you tried the 8 failed boots?

Again..probably being a noob...are the file permissions set as ro? Mayhaps you need to change permissions?

Did you read my post? It is exactly telling you how to replace the first sector of the emmc. you can source it from /dev/zero with a bs=512 and a count=1 if you really wanna wipe the bootloader, but better would be just getting it working yeah? all our nooks have the same partition map (unless we are dual booting) and that map is stored on the first sector. My instruction tell how to pull the first sector with dd, and how to push it back on. notice i'm accessing the mmc directly? not the partitions? so unless his hardware is bad (or the extended partition is corrupt too) then my instructions will work. He just needs a copy of the first sector of a working nook. I'd put mine up but i'm not sure it would work, i have two extra partitions from stock. It probably wouldn't matter, but i'm not 100% sure on that, so i'd rather it be someone else that makes the image from a nook with a stock partition map (the contents of the partitions can be whatever, as long as they are all in the same place as stock).

Thanks. Yes, I read your post. dd, for some reason, only works if I set bs to at least 1M. I don't have the NC, but maybe Wendell could confirm that.
Wendell: go to "adb shell" and type [dd if=/dev/zero of="/dev/block/mmcblk0" bs=512 count=1] without the [].
Please confirm that this returns an I/O error.
But for some reason, using 1M or greater as bs works, but the bootloader still isn't erased.. it still boots to CWR..
I'm pretty sure all the I/O error i've had mean that there's a hardware failure.. But that's my opinion, nothing more..

So I have had this problem for a long long time....searched Google endlessly for the solution but in vain....
The thing is none of the a2sd scripts are working on any roms I flash...
I have tried s2e,link2sd,dta2sd,amarullz sd2ext....
And for your info I have a class 4 4gig card with 1gb ext3 partition...
So now lets see the problems I have...
1.S2E
Every thing is fine for a week or so after installing it...then suddenly I get reboot when installing a new app..after reboot "voila" none of my apps are accessible even though they are present in extra partition ...
2.Link2sd
Everything is fine say for around 15days after installing it...then the system suddenly becomes "read only" and not able to link any app or dalvik cache to SD ext..
3.Amarullz script ...
After few hours it messed up my su app and was not able to use any root apps...
4.Dt a2sd..
Same problem as s2e..good for few days and then suddenly starts rebooting and not able to install any apps...
Guys I use mostly cm mods..had prob with all of them ..
Also used it with emnon...
Please guys help me on this...

If I were you, I would re-format the card back to 100% FAT32, then use rom manager to create an ext4 partition, then try s2e again. It's the easiest, most reliable way imo, as I suspect it might be the ext3 format that's giving you problems

Ok but if I reformat it to ext4....and flash a new rom(by wiping data) then cwm will again turn the partition into ext3 while formatting the SD card...right?
And rom manager doesn't support our device ...

How to check if the efs partition has become corrupted?
Because I a problem when I want to move applications on the internal SD with the Chimera ROM.

you can try to see if your IMEI is intact. use the list of Samsung service codes.
you can also just try to enter it with root explorer if it is actually corrupted (as opposed to wiped or something), your phone will lock up when you try to.
generally speaking if your phone service works and/or you have a non-generic IMEI your EFS is intact.
make sure you back it up and export it to your computer before you do anything.
if you have a nandroid it should have backed up /efs but back it up again just in case

Basically that together with a csc check, if one is selected.
There is another factor I dont understand. With some ICS roms you get a info screen on desktop, when efs is damaged. Havent figured that one out

EFS can be checked if intact from settings - About device - Status
then you can see if your IMEI is intact or not
it would be very wise to backup your efs partition using HC K-tool, it was a life jacket when a restore corrupted my EFS partition, you only have to do it once and keep it on your Ext SD card

Big problem to move the apps on the sd with the CHIMERA ( the phone does not respond) , but no problem to move apps with all other rom...!?!?

I know we have fully working recoveries already and I made this just to learn the process and for the future if I'm not that lucky any more and don't have amazing devs like Shabbypenguin on the same device.
I still have a lot to learn but this is first step I made in that direction.
Here is my recovery tRec_v0.3.6 that has been used for quite some time on E4GT.
It has been compiled with great help from devs mentioned above with CM10.1 for our phones.
The mount points have been fixed thanks to Dees_Troy from TWRP team.
Now back ups are saved in correct location and can be accessed with apps like stock "My Files".
AGAT_Recovery_tRec_v0.3.6.tar
AGAT_Recovery_tRec_v0.3.6.zip
So far I was able to back up, restore, flash zips etc.
It looks like I'm a good student and it works.
I have tried zip file and it works.
Tar should work fine with ODIN but I didn't test it.
I'm using heimdall to flash recovery.img.

It based on CWM recovery.
Have did some changes and edits long ago to make it work with GS2.
Small updates and edits and we got new OS dropping.
So it's somewhat modified and edited CWM.

Been using your recovery and kernel on wife's E4GT for quite some time. Excited for your stuff here.

Question. My backup failed. My phone is telling me I'm low on storage space. I have under a gig left on the device which I don't understand and 16 on my sd card. . My sd card doesn't appear to be showing up and in my storage settings where it says mount sd card ..I can't. What do I do?

So after you flashed the recovery, tried to make a backup and restore it failed? then u booted up and you memory is all jacked up? is that right? im trying to understand myself!!!

Yes. Sorry for the unclear statement. My device memory says it's low and I don't understand how that can be. Backup failed.. My sd card is fine. Can I back up to my sd card?

I havent flashed it yet, but if its based off of CWM there should be an option to "create backup to external memory" right before you execute the backup. But im kinda puzzled on why that would mess with your internal memroy. Are u currently running a TW ROM? or are u on one of the Alpha builds of CM/AOKP?

Look in /data/media/clockworkmod
You will find your backups. You can move them to the sdcard or delete them and start fresh.

I made 3 back ups.
2 on external and one on internal memory.
Didn't have any problems. Everything works.

You device shows 0.92 GB free space
and back up of this phone is about 3.5-3.6 GB.
So you have 1/3rd of needed space for back up.

According to you first screen shot, externalsd isn't mounting.. So there's an issue right there. I'll flash it over and test.
Also, even if your backup failed, you need to use an explorer and check from root /data/media and see if you have a clockworkmod folder with a partial backup. Just delete it since you know it failed. (partials will still be written on a fail)

ls -l /storage/emulated/legacy - gives - /mnt/shell/emulated/0, which isn't read properly. So users won't see the files under /data/media without an explorer. Seems to be common with CWM and the S4. It thinks the sdcard is /storage/emulated/legacy.

:edit: Just saw your reply Agat. I know Garwynn's recovery is resolved and if you've been working with him and Shabby, I'm sure yours is as well. Only open issue I'm aware of is exfat.

Just used stock "My Files" app and was able to navigate to both internal and external /clockworkmod/backup folders.
I'm not sure I understand what you mean it's read properly an I need explorer.
I can see and access both folders on my PC and with "My Files" app on phone.
