Help me to Find the Lapdock for Droid 3 - Motorola Droid 3

I am told that there is a Keyboard/Screen/Trackpad dock for the Droid 3, if you don't mind that its keyboard shares its regular Qwerty keys with Chinease simbols besides our regular alphabet.
At least that whats my provider of tech stuff has told me. Does anyone know about it? (just to make sure that he doesn't charge me too much for it).
Thanks a million.
PS: I hope someone can provide me with more info before him; if not (and it was really true), I will try to post about it.

I think he is full of beans, I have never seen or heard of one, but this does not mean it doesn't exist or that there isn't one.

Someone could make an adapter cable that would retrofit the D3 into the Atrix dock if they were up to the task, but I haven't heard of a lapdock for the D3. Could you get a picture? You might have found something valuable!

Bionic Lapdock?
The HDMI and USB connectors on the Bionic appear to have the same positioning as the Droid 3. I would be curious to see if the Bionic's lapdock would work with the D3.

I'll try the Bionic dock as soon as possible.

Nope, there is no Webtop software on the D3. Nor is there 1gb of ram like there is on the Bionic, Atrix, Photon.... Even if it plugs in the D3 won't know how to interact with it.
You can however use HDMI mirroring, but the Droid 3 can't talk to a keyboard or mouse.

Now he changed the story...
Now this person says its an adaptor to the current lapdock, and the picture he saw has a Droid 3 conected using the adaptor.
While this might just mean Screen Mirroring instead of a parallel firefox, the keyboard indeed might not work.
At first I always suspected about the mirroring, but the keyboard could always has worked if it used the bluetooth as a method of comunicating if the USB didn't allowed out otherwise.
While I have tried more than one keyboard, and all seemed to work nicely, like the Palm Bluetooth Keyboard, even the Apple Wireless Keyboard, I am not sure if a mouse would work as well.
If it was true indeed about an adaptor, and it works, I will keep you posted.
By the way, what if, and this it a BIG if, the lapdock contains all the firefox IN it, and it just uses the disk/SD memory in the phone? wouldn't that make it more prone to be compatible? Thats just a thought...

According to this picture, you can flip the connectors around on the Atrix or Bionic Lapdock:

Hmmmm......

I can confirm the Motorola Lapdock 100 works just fine with the Droid 3. It lacks Webtop and some things are minor annoyances (like Swype pops out whenever you click a text box. Either click esc to make it go away or pull out the phone's keyboard a hair) In fact I'm typing this response from my Lapdock. The USB keyboard and mouse work just fine (I think that's built into Android) and my wireless mouse even works when I plug the dongle into the USB replicator on the back. I think the replicator also will accept a thumb drive or a keyboard.

Hello.
Can you make some movies from Droid 3 with Lapdock?
How is screen resolution in this combination? 960x540 or Lapdock native?
Thanks in advance and I am sorry for my bad English.

Is this setup still working? I ask because I read a post on the Motorola forum where a guy's D3/Lapdock 100 worked as you describe until he took a call. Once the call was over, it went back to simple HDMI mirror, with no keyboard/mouse functionality, even after reboots, etc.

I picked one of these up for $59 and free shipping a few days ago, but it hasn't shipped yet:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190662411549
If the connectors need to be swapped around, I'll do it. It would be nice if it was a touchscreen, but I'm not going to complain too much. Will report back here the results and pictures if needed.

I got one of the Bionic docks in the $59 deal as well. It arrived today and the connectors do need to be flipped around. While the lapdock's native resolution is 1366x768, the Droid 3 will only output at 960x540. I'm hoping to use it with an RDP app, but none of the RDP apps work well with it.
Let me know if there are any questions on the functionality.

Do the keyboard and mouse work? I have a Atrix 4G one that I got from ebay for $59 sitting new in the box.

Why would the D3 only have an out put of 960x540? Can't it produce 1080p out on that HDMI connector?

It outputs at 1080p, or at least my TV reports it as that but it looks like its just an upconverted 950x540 picture, since its duplicating the phone's screen. What would be nice is an option to have HDMI only (the phone screen is off) so it could actually produce a real 1920x1080 display, the hardware should be capable.

I pretty sure the D3 only outputs above 960x540 when you are playing a video only. I wonder if we can mod the D3 so it can always output to 1080p.

OK, so my $59 Atrix Lapdock showed up a few minutes ago. I opened up the carrier dock and flipped around the connectors. The dock needs to be dremelled a little bit, but once it's plugged in, the video is mirrored and the touchpad and keyboard function normally. It's just like an Android powered laptop at this point, with a 3G connection. Need to dig around for the webtop/lapdock app now and see if that's something I should care about. The resolution looks to be exactly the same as the phone, for now. I'm thinking a little hack could get the resolution upped.
Stay tuned.

Thanks, the Motorola Gingerbread webtop app hasn't been ported because of RAM limitations. The Ubuntu on Android project is claiming 512MB as a minimum and will be released open source eventually so their is hope of running that someday if someone can port it. It requires no kernel modifications and runs on top of Android so it should be possible.
I will probably mod my Atrix 4G lapdock at some point.

That's kind of what I was seeing, too. There appears to be other webtop-ish like apps on the market that do things when you plug them into HDMI. Researching them now.
But yeah, the Ubuntu on Android looks to be badass!

My Streak 7 Dock thoughts.

Well I finally bought the Streak docking station. I havent hooked it up to HDMI yet so I cant tell you about that yet.
What I can tell you is.. the plastic holder part.. The clear thing you insert, I dont know, I mean seems solid enough but I cant help but feel that it could break, I dont know. That and things make a odd sound when you jiggle the tablet while its docked.
Aside from that, GOD this dock is nice. I mean its angled just right for doing things, visibility is great! Good for video watching and so. Also playing finger based games like angry birds, this thing runs great. Also least it can charge separately from the usb connection to the PC. All I need to find now is a way to access my network files to play videos remotely and I am set. =D
I agree on the dock being nice. I bought two, one for in the office and the other at home. The dock mode of the streak can be a bit annoying at times especially when you lock the tablet with a pin. Posting via Galaxy S as waiting on replacement streak 7 from Dell. Still love the Streak though not working right now.

Btw I havent tested this part yet with HDMI, If you hook it up, do your games show up on the TV? Would be cool to have your emulators displaying on the TV. Heh.
Hmmm.... I think I might give the dock a try. I have a few extra HDMI cables laying around. I'll try it out and post what happens.
I've had the dock for about 2 weeks now. Works great, HDMI looks decent, not HD obviously, but it looks good and I am able to watch movies on my 56inch with no problems.... To me it was worth it, you can get them for cheap on ebay just to let everyone know.

How can I buy this dock in Vietnam???
I picked up one these docks on eBay for $50 w/ a OEM car charger.
Nice solid feel on the dock but sometimes I wish it had a mode where you could have a case on & have it nicely dock as well...
HDMI out is a nice +
I just wished it worked with Honeystreak. I hope dell releases honeycomb because I love using my doc to watch movies in the bedroom.
Hello
I'm new owner of Streak 7 - from Poland. I'm looking for one dock station for my S7 to be able to play hdmi on my tv. Problem is, that in Poland it's hard to get a dock.
Maybe anyone of you is about to sell one and could send it to Poland?
Thank you in advance

I would say check ebay. Most people ship everywhere.
Also yea, playing emulators works great on it. Also another perk.. if you use wiimote IME. You could have your streak docked, away from you and you can use the wii mote or classic controller to move the menu around too and open apps and so. Very handy.

Maybe. Tried Ebay or Amazon? Alot of people will ship worldwide.
what are some alternatives to the official dock like the g2 slacker? looking for something under $20 as both the official dock and the g2 dock go for at least 30 on ebay.
g2 slacker, while "looks" like same port, I doubt it is. Or would work. If you need a cheap alt,
http://www.amazon.com/Aftermarket-P..._1_1?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1334806828&sr=1-1
HOWEVER I should mention these docks DO NOT have hdmi! So they will charge, and seperate cable to sync. However.. a dell streak dock without hdmi.. seems silly..? I know for me.. hook to HDMI, Use BT keyboard/touchpad (and I can run dos!) or BT gamepad and I can run emulators. Thats nice on a TV. =)
The slacker dock only supports USB-IN, it doesnt support anything else on the S5/S7
Things missing from the slacker dock (that's available on the 2nd gen official dock):
Line-out
USB-in (ie OTG)
USB-high speed charing
HDMI-out
Dock sense (where the device automatically goes into clock mode)
The slacker dock has a headphone out, but the S5/S7 dont support it either (it may not have the pins for that, if it does it's different anyway). The slacker dock also has pads for USB-in, but that model was never officially made available(?).
Also I would STRONGLY recommend against a slacker dock for the S7 (if you can even find one), the S5 is a lot lighter then the S7.
The S7 barely fits on it, but it has absolutely no support besides the port itself.
The S5 already places all it's weight on the dock port, the S7 is asking to be broken by any accidentical impact.
If you are willing (or can find it at a reasonable price), I would strongly recommend the official 2nd gen dock for either the S5/S7.
It includes 2 backplates to support either model.
Also, the S5 dock in the previous link likely wont fit the S7, that's the reason the official dock comes with 2 backplates.
Your only real choice for the S7 is the official 2nd gen dock.
Oh fyi, amazon has it on sale right now for 30$ the official one.
Are we sure the Offical Dell Dock has OTG?! I can't find documentation on that AT ALL.

[Q] hdmi to laptop

My laptop has a hdmi input. I was going to see how Earth and legend looked on a larger screen than a 4.3" screen. When I connect from the thrill to the laptop, nothing happens. Is it not possible to connect to the laptop or am I needing to click something?
I googled and youtubed but couldn't find anything related to the thrill and a laptop.
Thanks in advance.
Are you sure its an input, not an output? I have never heard of a laptop with a HDMI input, usually you want to put your laptop onto a big TV, instead of putting a peripheral onto a laptop screen.
The Thrill plays extremely nice with my 1080p Vizio. Netflix looks better using a HDMI cable and phone vs the native Netflix app on my TV. But, that might be because my phone consistently gets twice the bandwidth my home connection does.
Sent from my LG Thrill Faux G
Oh I don't know. It's a port that's labeled HDMI. I just assumed it was an input. Okay, so is there anyway to run the HDMI to the laptop or is it pretty much a TV thing?
Maybe it could be done with special software. I also have a laptop with a HDMI port. I could not find anything remotely close to an option to turn that into an input through the Windows (W 7 64 bit ultimate) settings.
I also did a few Google searches about using a laptops HDMI port for input, and the resounding response I found was that its basically unheard of. They make special adapters for that, the run over USB. The "worlds first" laptop to natively support this feature came out less than a year ago.

It's not possible to turn your output into an input. It's a hardware limitation.
in this day and age why hell don't they make the laptop screen work like an optional monitor with most new devices being digital HD it should only add little to the cost.
Ok Speaking from hardware side
Ok I work for a large Semiconductor manufacture. That HDMI port is an output. In order to use your Laptop display try to find a TV Tuner for you laptop with HDMI inputs. They maybe hard to find if at all, and if you do find them they will be pricey.
Good Luck

Depends. If the hardware doesnt allow for it then it wouldnt be possible on a software level. I assume thats what he meant. Of course with enough know how you could probably make changes on a hardware level to allow for it.

Xoom/atrix keyboard?

I was wondering if anyone tested it on the droid 3 I need to know if it works properly
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App
I tried to fit my droid 3 into my friend's atrix keyboard, but it didn't fit. The ports are backwards so the phone would be flipped around from what the atrix would be. BUT!!!
With some modifications to the dock area I think it could be done, it literally was a few MM of extra plastic that was getting in the way. A dremel tool would probably do the trick.
If you are talking about the Motorola wireless bluetooth keyboard it will work on the Droid 3 according to Motorola's website:
http://www.motorola.com/Consumers/U...-Wireless-Keyboard-US-EN.productCompatibility
Not sure if that means this keyboard will work on all Android devices or if Motorola includes software drivers on its phones amongst the bloat.

I use an Atrix keyboard
There is another thread on this topic going as well. here my most resent post:
I received my Atrix dock and really like it so far. I had to do quite a bit of trimming on the plastic dock to make the D3 sit properly and make a reliable connection. It works well and I really like it. Played with it for about a day now, Netflix is nice on bigger screen, texting is good, Angry Birds is good. I also like that it charges the phone battery.
All in all it took about an hour of plastic trimming and test fitting. I added one item as peace of mind for myself. Once the phone is docked I have a black Velcro cable tie a wrap around the phone and dock connector so I can move and not be to worried about the phone falling or the connectors being subjected to more stress than needed.
Wrong thread, this is about a bluetooth keyboard not the lapdock. There is a separate thread talking about the lapdock.
No problem
The second post references the lapdock so the thread is kind of mixed it would seem.
Oh, I didn't see that one post, just wanted to let you know we have a thread that talks a lot about the lapdock.

Motorola Car dock

Hi
Has anyone seen an official Car dock for the Razr i ?
I found a Razr M dock on amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Vehi..._11?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1350308561&sr=1-11
It should be fully compatible with the Razr i, but not shipped outside US.
I Hope Motorola will sell the same here for our Razr i. I own a Defy + the official car dock and love the quality of it. Will buy a Motorola one for the Razr i without any hesitation
I answer to myself.
For those who are interested by a good car mount, the Razr M official fit 100% with Razr i.. as expected.
I ordered one on Ebay, got it today.
Can be used even with a case (3 sizes: without case, with a fine one, or with a large one)
Only thing that bother me: no car dock detection. SmartAction or Tasker doesn't detects the dock. Maybe it's not activate on this early rom we have, as Motorola doesn't sell on official dock for the Razr i.
Now I use a Tasker profil launched by a shortcut, but I wait for some NFC tag I ordered to do this
Motorola has said it won't be making a car dock (but I suspected that M one would work). Whyever not? The RAZR i is shipping in many markets and Intel is keen to promote it. It has fairly good distribution too.
It's as odd as Asus/Google deciding not to release the dock for the Nexus 7; a tablet selling by the truck load and winning awards left, right and centre - with new life thanks to more storage and 3G variants!
Sometimes I do wonder about the sanity of those in charge!

Oh yeah... 100% with you...
I don't get what your problem is, if the Razr M dock fits perfectly, why don't you just get this one?
A possible Razr I dock would be just the same anyway.
They're not exactly freely available here (UK) though and how many will Motorola sell, given the official UK line is there is no dock for the phone?
I bet loads of people will import one at great cost and fear no support if they have problems (Moto UK saying it's not designed to work with it).
The RAZR i is Motorola's best chance all year of getting back into the game and the lack of accessories seems rather dumb to me.
The Razr M car dock is available on ebay and ships worldwide.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OEM-MOTOR...ccessories&hash=item257664e30d#ht_5310wt_1271
It's quite expensive though..
I might try that but I am sure most wouldn't. If it failed, would Motorola UK/EMEA honour the warranty?

When you dock the phone it should be detected, and be able to launch car mode (with smart action, or tasker).
With a razr m it's working, I asked on the razr m section... Not with the I.
So what think about this: maybe it's just a software issue, Motorola hasn't activate the sensor on the I
But, maybe there's no sensor on the I and it would never work as it should.
But there's a workaround by using nfc
Just sad to see there's some decision made that are out of sens: why not selling a car dock for the I when there's one 100% identical for the m?
I use Smart Actions to trigger vehicle mode when it connects to my car kit.
You can do this, but there's a flaw
Smart action will only bring up car app, but not set "car mode" on.
Explanation : when car mode is ON, when you hit the home button you go to the car app. If car mode is not "on", home button act as normal and bring you on the default launcher.. With is not very practical when you drive.
And for me, blutooth is off until I'm docked, I launche the bt, gps, etc while docking the phone.
Yesterday I receive my nfc tag... It's working pretty well with Tasker. (nfc use less battery than bt always on)
Yes that is an issue. I have a few Sony Smart tags so I'll set one of those up instead.
I am sure it will be a simple software issue, but Moto obviously decided early on it wasn't going to make accessories.
Given Google's input (stripping away almost all Moto apps, Webtop, HDMI out) and Google's lack of accessories for the Nexus 7 (I wonder if this will also be the case for the Nexus 4 and 10?) I wonder if there's a theme here?
Brodit
as a long time Brodit (www.brodit.se) user I wondered what to do using their mount in my car.
Actually I used their universal holder part 511230 which fits nicely. Only issue was the USB port was covered on the side so I used my multitool..... see attached pics.

I had asked them if they'd be creating a holder for the RAZR i/M shortly after the RAZR i came out, and they stated there were no plans to. Alas, one of the main blocking issues for me for picking up one of these (along with the lack of custom ROM progress.. )
Hello!
I have found a workaround for the Car-Dock app launcher.
Install Car dock home v3 from playStore
Install this app:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18557944&postcount=6
Try docking your Razr I in the Car-Dock. It should ask you wich app you want to use. select the Motorola App. And it should start as soon you put your phone into the dock.
Made a video how i tested it. Actually I don't own the dock, but i will get it in a couple of days. There is a magnet in my laptop as you see. Thats how it also worked with my old Milestone 2.

[Q] Do I even need to root my Atrix?

I have a cabin and don't want to pay $70/mo for internet for a couple days a month. I wanted to root my Atrix so I could use it as an internet connection for a computer.
Thing is, the Atrix has HDMI out, and with this dock: cgi dot ebay dot com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140890170592
It has USB ports, which I'm guessing support a keyboard and mouse and maybe even an external hard drive?
So maybe the answer is to just use the Atrix as the computer (granted, I can't use CS5, UEStudio, Navicat, Putty...) Although, for $30 I can get logmein ignition and remote desktop to my main PC, where I can at least half-ass use those programs.
Guess my question is, besides the lack of windows-only apps, is there a big downside to using the Atrix in place of a PC?
Is Android support for peripherals any good?
