There have been those that run into problems after installing the XXJP3I9000 update on the Samsung Captivate and attempt to reboot into recovery mode. The issue that they have is that since the Captivate has no physical home button to select an option like you can with the Galaxy S, you can't select an option, and therefore you can't reboot your device regularly. While I am in this same problem and have not figured out a solution, I have started this thread to post what knowledge I have about this issue so that others may help get this issue figured out. If anyone has information on how to fix this problem, please comment below. Let's fix this!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First of all, the key combinations that standardly would work with the original captivate firmware will not work anymore. Pressing all three buttons (Vol+, Vol - and Power) will only power cycle the phone, that is, until you let up on the buttons. Pressing Vol+ and Vol- and then plugging your phone into the computer will also do nothing. (By nothing I mean will take you back to the recovery menu)
Every key combination will only take you back to the recovery menu, so key combinations seem to be out.
If you boot into recovery mode, take out the battery and put it back in, all the while keeping the phone plugged in to the computer, the phone will enter the "POWER RESET OR UNKNOWN UPLOAD MODE", which will show your device in windows as being a Samsung USB Composite Device and a Samsung Mobile Modem (gadget serial, Windows 7) While this may be helpful, you cannot run ODIN or ADB in this mode, nor does this allow disk access. If you have Samsung Kies installed, it will detect a device, but will never complete loading it.
Other information with this method: On the phone screen, as well as showing "POWER RESET OR UNKNOWN UPLOAD DEVICE" the screen will also show the following in red:
RST_STAT =0X1
PMIC_IRQ1 =0X0
PMIC_IRQ2 =0x0
PMIC_IRQ3 =0x4
PMIC_STATUS1 =0x40
PMIC_STATUS2 =0x2c
If this helps anybody, it was a pleasure
Another method I found briefly was that after installing Kies, and rebooting the phone into recovery mode (again) my computer detected four new devices, two of them being Samsung Android devices and one being a disk drive. Potentially, without freezing or error, the drivers that are included with the Kies software will detect and allow for disk management while the phone is in recovery mode. Three of the four devices installed without error for me, but the fourth, the actual Android device, continued to say "installing device" until I unplugged the phone out of frustration. It has since not detected those four devices again, and I have yet to figure out how to do that again. The nice thing about that was that although the adb.exe reboot download command did not work, adb.exe did detect the phone. if this is true then rebooting normally or into download mode should be easy.
The last thing I noticed is that button furthest to the left on the main screen on the captivate will close the recovery menu when pressed, and leave the background behind, and then will reopen the recovery menu when pressed again. This is showing me that the four touch buttons are operable, but not configured. If it were possible to reconfigure the actions that pressing these buttons do, then it would be easy to be able to reboot the device normally.
I have compiled information to the best of my ability, and here is a question to ask, that I think will help solve the problem. Can the captivate with I9000 2.2 software run adb in recovery mode?
Comments, Questions, and Most of all, answers would be appreciated for me, as well as for other users with the same problem as I. Hopefully, this thread can be the solving point for this problem.
Many Thanks,
TouchofDestiny
An Update: The reason that the combinations don't work for me or either people is because they (and I) fail to install the captivate kernel, and that is making the volume power button controls useless.
same here i put froyo from the galaxy s i9000 and i cant change the rom or get into recoverymode because buttons dont work man this sucks and 3G or Edge doesnt work.....
You're problem is a little different. If you can't get into recovery mode, than that means you aren't in recovery mode, which means you can use ADB to enter download mode and use Odin to flash your phone. I have given up looking for a solution, and have sent my phone back to AT&T for a replacement. Since I'm still in my thirty day trial period, it doesn't matter if I used different firmware or not. Hopefully others won't get into the situation I had. For me, this thread is complete.
hi,
I solved the same problem doing this:
start odin.
take out battery. plug in USB. press both volume buttons. insert battery while pressing those buttons.
Done. download mode should appear.
yep, same boat
I am in the same position here. I downloaded the froyo leak and installed it with odin, no problem there. Upon startup into froyo, all was good, except my phone was stuck in horizontal mode until I tilted it vertical, *then* it would go horizontal. So basically I am 90 degrees off kilter. I decided to look around for another rom to try, and in the process managed to get stuck in recovery mode. Couldn't tell ya what firmware I have, just what is on the endless recovery screen that I cannot get out of!
I have no external microSD card, only the SIM card, and no way to get it recognized on my XP or win 7 system.
Really, really stuck here, guys. I do have the androidsdk installed, if there is a way to get it to reboot. As it is, adb cannot see the device, so I am looking at a truly bricked phone.
And yes, this is a US phone, which is why the power button and home button are not mapped (I assume).
I am DESPERATE for some help here!
and while I am at it...
I WAS able to get into download mode with the shovel guy originally by using the 2 volume keys+power, usb (odin up), battery in, release power.
No more. No key combo works.
Totally bricked the Samsung, which is supposed to be impossible!
when you are on the i9000 rom the only button that will get you in download mode is the vol down
That's HUGE!
You, sir, are a gentleman, scholar, and all-round smart guy! How did I miss that? I coulda SWORN I was getting into download mode with both volume keys. I've never been so happy to see a little Dalek dude with a shovel in my LIFE. 2 minutes in the one-click installer and now I'm back in business!
Thanks for helping a terrified owner out, and preventing a trip to the AT&T store.
I cannot go to download mode
I have the same problem here. Stuck in the recovery mode after upgrade the froyo and had the orientation problem. How do you go into download mode or power reset or unknown upload mode? Any button combination doesnt seem to work for me.
How do I do?
Please HELP. I am struggling here
Thanks
the key to the i9000 rom/kernel button combo is VOL DOWN + using the USB trick. do not press vol up + down, just the down while you are plugging in the usb cable
i too am stuck in recovery mode. the only way i can get into download mode is by using both volume buttons. just holding the down button just sends me to revoery mode as well. how can i fix my phone in download mode?
nevermind, reinstalled 2.2 and it works now.
Eureka I got it...I think
I installed froyo 2.2 i9000 on my captivate and got stuck in recovery mode...power button doesnt select and when I hold down the up and down vol buttons I couldnt get the downloading icon anymore either. Then I remembered something from another post....
Home + Vol Down + Power = Downloading Icon
It worked for me....let me know if this helped....I'm officially unbricked.
Hey. I'm in the same boat. My Captivate has I9000 firmware running it and it won't run properly. I can't access the settings to enable USB debugging in order to boot in either Recovery or Download using adb and no button combination works for me. I can't use button combos to boot into either Recovery or Download mode.
Does anybody have any idea what is going on and how to fix this?
JPBentley-- Since the I9000 firmware is set to use physical buttons, and the Captivate doesn't contain any, once you get into recovery mode, you cannot get out. The standard Captivate key combinations to get into download mode do not work, as do the combinations to get into download mode via the I9000 firmware. Basically, you get to a dead end. Unless there is some way to flash the phone's ROM outside of download mode, which I doubt, your best bet is to return the phone for a replacement. After haggling around with AT&T for a while, they admitted that installing the I9000 ROM doesn't invalidate your warranty, so they should take it back. They did with mine, and now I'm running the official Froyo leak. Good luck with your new phone!
SOLUTION
For all those that are having this problem, Ive struggled with it & tried EVERY possible button combination & nothing worked.
The ONLY solutions I have found is to use a usb JIG. Take out the battery, sim card & sd card, plug in the Usb JIG & put the batter back in. Give it a couple of seconds & I'tll enter recovery mode without pushing any buttons. You dont even need to push the power button, it's that simple.
Here is an image of how to make one if you are electronically inclined, personally I am not so I found a local electronic parts store & they put on together for me.
If you want, you can also buy one online, I cant post a link becuase Im a new member but just search for "samsung usb jig" on ebay.com & youll find plenty.
shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=samsung+usb+jig&_sacat=See-All-Categories
yes, i think you need to build a jig or buy one online if you want to play with custom rom. you may not need it now, but you may need it just in case.
I have the same problem, i can get into recovery mode. I can also get to download mode but Odin doesnt see my phone and neither does adb. By pulling the battery with no buttons pushed it goes straight into recovery mode. Looks like I have a brick now. If anybody has any suggestions please let me know.
That's not even close to a brick. Are you using a usb port closest to the motherboard on your pc? Is your cable good? Make or buy a jig, that will put your phone into download mode.
Ok i was running a custom version of 2.2 FroYo on my captivate and it was running fine. I backed up my old version using Clockwork Recovery. Well i decided to get brave and flash back to my stock 2.1 ROM.
When i did that alls i can get is the AT&T boot screen. It will sit there for an hour if i left it. I tried entering recovery bode (power, vol up/down) but it just sits at that screen.
Is there any hope to recovering it? I use a MAC but im about to boot Win7 on it to run ODIN, but i cant get into any flash/recvoery mode....
Suggestions?
You want to try and get into Download Mode, not Recovery. Have you tried the various button combos to get into Download Mode yet?
If the various button combos ultimately don't work, you can use something called a JIG to force your phone into Download mode.
What is the button combo for download mode? also with is 'JIG'? Im no total newb but i am new to this who flashing/kernel modifying thing.
I have a Nexus S now which i love but i need the Galaxy running for my AT&T company SIM card....
Also do i NEED ODIN?
There are like 4+ different button combos for Download Mode. If you search, I'm sure you'll find them all. The one I remember is:
1. Remove battery, SIM, microSD card (if you have one)
2. Wait at least 10 seconds with the phone off
3. Hold Volume Up/Volume Down keys, do not let go
4. While holding the volume keys, insert the battery into the phone
If this worked, the phone should almost instantly be in Download Mode.
Once in Download Mode, you want to use Odin (generally the One-Click JF6 version) to flash your phone to a working state again.
A JIG is a microUSB plug that will force your phone into Download Mode, if Download Mode is still possible on your phone. You can make them with a MicroUSB plug and resistors, or buy one. The link in my signature is an example of what a purchased one would look like.
Ever since I have flashed 2.3.3 I've been having problems.
-Download mode can only be accessed from adb reboot download
-The only way I got drivers to recognize in download mode was to install them from Samsung Kies mini.
-No button combination works to get into download mode, it takes you to recovery mode every time.
-My four touch button lights will not shut off after turning phone off and vibration confirming shut down.
Once I finally got it back to 2.1 stock via Odin one-click, I used Kies mini to upgrade to 2.2. I still have these same problems, all which started happening after I upgraded to the 2.3.3 SamFirmware leak. Not only have I been reading these problems from this leak but from other roms using 2.3.3.
To clarify, I am not blaming anyone, I am simply looking for a fix or to be told that I have done something wrong. Anything will be appreciated, thanks.
I have tried the 3-buttom combo - volume - and + along with the power. release power when att boot logo comes up. I've even tried to hold power down and let it cycle through the boot logo a couple times before releasing it. No luck, only recovery mode.
remove battery, sim, sd card. hold both volume - and +. put in battery and Usb cable as soon as battery is in. no luck, only recovery mode.
I've even tried the i9000's download mode. I think its volume down and power...only recovery mode.
The only way I was able to get into download mode was adb reboot download. I haven't tried a jig.
I downloaded kies mini from the samsung site. Once installed, you can find an option to install the phones drivers when the phone is recognized by kies. Odin registered my phone in download mode after that and I was able to one-click back to stock.
I am going to try that.
I had this problem when going to a 2.3.3 rom before, sometimes it just needs a little and some tender loving repeatable connects, other times maybe just to be left alone for a day or two... I'm not sure if this will work but if you can get a com port from Odin 1 click without having to be in download mode I.e. the phone is on, try a master clear, let the phone boot up and see if you were able to get a com port again(leave it connected during boot), then do various methods to get in download mode starting with the GB method
Hope any of this helps at all
Download Android Terminal Emulator from market. Once it's installed, open it, and type su. This should have the app ask for root rights. Once you allow it, type reboot download and press the enter button on the virtual keyboard. if the phone just goes black and doesnt reboot after a short while, just battery pull and turn it back on. You can also use this method to get into recovery by substituting reboot download with reboot recovery.
Sorry for being cryptic on my initial post, this is what I'm dealing with. I can't get the phone out of phone---!---computer screen and I've tried all the button combinations.
here's what I did. I was in stock enclair and copied continuum 6.1 to the sd card. I then get into download mode to flash 2.3.3 boot loaders. That was successful so I booted back into download mode to flash the talon kernel. I changed the zip to a tar so Odin 1.83 can recognize the file in the pda section. I clicked start and odin failed (I didn't know you had to be in recovery mode to flash the kernel it wasn't listed in the instructions I had). I rebooted the phone and got the phone---!---computer screen with this message:
Firmware update failed ! Try going into Recovery mode.
Hope this helps
Even though the phone boots - a jig I've found is a GUARANTEED way to get into download mode. A jig is a VERY useful tool and only costs like $8. If you plan on flashing your phone again in the future - it's certainly NOT a waste to buy one.
I have been having the hardest time lately with my captivate but the newest problem is that the lock button doesnt work at all it seems to be a hardware issue rather than a software issue and i am currently running cyanogenmod7
Right now i want to restore it to stock rom but no matter what i try i cant get it into download mode or if i get it into recovery mode i cant d anything because the lock button is broken
Any suggestions?
adb command can get you into download and recovery. jig can also get you into download
just tested: Search soft key is enter/select, back is back, menu is up, home is down
ok well i have it plugged in to my computer and set to screen never sleep while charging so i can still use it but when i try to flash it to stock using odin 3 it wont recongize that its in debugging mode is CM7 not compatible with it or something?
well i tried entering download mode and it started and just hung so idk what to do now cuz i took the battery out and now it starts up and says at and t world phone and is stuck there so i can no longer enter download mode or my phone so am i totally screwed at this point?
is my best bet go to the at and t store and be like i was updating kies with it and enter download mode and it got unplugged while updating?
Well, if your phone still turns on, its still possible to fix it, however, you shouldn't have any problems getting one replaced.
Just tell them the phone said you had an update and you hit ok, play dumb and act upset.
1. What is the point in initially rooting, when you have to re-root it back into the stock firmware to flash custom ROM?
I got my phone back with these new (or old?) settings:
Firmware Version: 2.1- update1
Kernel Version 2.6.29, [email protected]#2
Build number: ECLAIR.UXJI2
2. Does this mean my phone is already rooted?
3. What is my course of action next if I want a custom ROM?
- would it be step 2 in this guide? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
- would I be rooting AGAIN?
Kind of new to the Android scene, and it's kind of overwhelming. I have exhausted the stickies and the MUST READS, if I could get some help, it would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.
icedd,
I do not believe that you are rooted. Looks like you have pure stock Eclair out of the box with Rogers.
And here's a little info for ya...
In the days of Eclair and Froyo, rooting ur phone was needed initially in order to get the ClockWorkMod Recovery (CWM) on ur phone. And from there once you had copied an Eclair or Froyo Rom to the internal sdcard of the phone, you could use the CWM to flash (install) the Rom that the Developer had made.
Later, once the Devs started baking (building in) the CWM into the kernels that were included in their Roms, it was realized that if you just used Odin to flash that dev kernel to ur phone you could then just reboot into the CWM and from there flash the dev's Rom. So in fact, you do not have to be rooted to install a custom dev rom. But you need to be familiar with the use of Odin and CWM Recovery.
And as far as the Gingerbread Roms, well... that is a different story- kinda.
Your best bet, as you have stated that you have read a lot, is to read and read some more. And you could also go to mobiletechvideos.com on youtube -- there are excellent videos there, that are very instructional - from the basics to the very advanced. So, please check that youtube channel out. You will not be disappointed.
Don't be discouraged. There is a lot to learn at first, but you'll get it.
And one more thing, if you are gonna start flashing roms, then you really need to buy a "Jig". Because you will need it and it will pay for itself the first time you use it.
Thanks for your input.
I haven't come across someone with a Build number of ECLAIR.UXJI2, or someone with a Baseband version of JI2. Does this mean I am already on stock firmware? Or not?
I don't know if I should do the oneclickroot or the update.zip now.
edit: I cannot even get into Recovery mode. Something tells me I won't be able to go there because I don't see the AT&T screen. I still have Rogers when I turn on the phone normally. I would need the Odin3 One-click to go truly back to stock first?
so that is stock already.... if you just want to root your stock eclair then you can do update.zip or oneclick. if you were planning to go to a GB rom then you may as well skip that and just use odin...
but it would depend on what rom you wanted to end up with...
keep at it you'll get there
Yes I have successfully rooted my phone.
The current problem I have right now is that I cannot get into Recovery mode with the 3 button method, which is required if I want MIUI (which is what I'm shooting for).
However, I can get it through CWM Recovery, which is the same thing assumably?
edit: Also, I cannot get into Download mode without the ADB command method. For Volume UP+Down + Power Button, it leads me to the battery standby screen, and then into a battery charging screen.
You don't use the power button when plugging in USB and holding both volume rockers. Tryit. Volume up/down, plug in USB. Should be dl mode. Unless you have I9000 bootloaders. In that case, volume down and insert USB, or volume down and power without USB.
I followed what you said and these are the results.
Volume up + Down + USB = Battery Standby + Battery Charging screen
Volume down + USB = Battery Standby + Battery Charging screen
Volume down + power =Normal Startup
If you press and hold all 3 at the same time, does it take you to recovery?
Try it again. Its very common for it not to work on the first couple of attempts. Hold both volume keys and then plug in the USB to the phone.
Tried both of your suggestions again, a couple of times.
Pressing all three buttons = Normal Bootup, although I do get an extended Rogers loading screen from this, but no recovery whatsoever. (nvm, when I normally boot up, there is this Rogers loading screen)
Holding both volume keys + USB = Battery Standby screen --> Battery charging screen
Is it because of any of this?
Firmware Version: 2.1- update1
Kernel Version 2.6.29, [email protected]#2
Baseband Version: I896UXJI2
Build number: ECLAIR.UXJI2
Sidenote: Does my baseband version have to be completely correct in order to flash custom ROM? I have been told that this is Rogers STOCK, and I have already rooted.
edit: I will use this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10056254&postcount=36 to try and get back to JH7 first actually. Hopefully I am doing this right..
Baseband version is the modem. that is it. nothing at all to do with your ability to flash anything.
Sounds like you have no button combo.
Would the Rogers Captivate be compatible with the 3 button fix? I am looking into it now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?annota...&feature=iv&v=qXMqLpnTPh0&src_vid=ka_O_3Wgw6A
The reason I'm hesitant on doing this is because you are suppose to see the AT&T screen flash before you let go of the buttons and see recovery mode. But I am on stock Rogers.
I do not recommend the old 3 button fix for anything. I would recommend flashing the att I897 GB bootloaders instead. It will replace the Rogers boot splash with the ATT world phone boot splash, though.
I just checked out the appropriate link in your signature.
Would this process include me to use Oden's OneClick?
Download the package from here
Extract OneClickI897UCKF1-bootloaders.exe
Restart the phone in Download Mode
Run OneClickI897UCKF1-bootloaders.exe - with administrator permissions if on Windows 7 or Vista!
Connect the USB cable to the PC and the phone
Click "Start"
Click to collapse
How am I supposed to get on Download mode if that is what I am trying to get?
I am getting confused by new and old methods of doing things.
I don't mean to be rude, but if you don't know how to get into download mode, you need to do more research.
I already stated that the only way I can go onto Download mode is using the ADB commands. That requires for my phone to be plugged it into the computer.
The method you suggested me instructed that the program and Download mode to both be turned on before connecting the phone to the computer.
This cannot work in my case, as I am looking for a 3 button fix.
^
Since u can get into download mode through ADB, then just have the Odin already opened before you type the command to reboot download. Problem solved.--U will be able to use Odin.
Ok so what you do is use adb to reboot into download mode. Once you do that unplug the phone from the computer. Now open odin and then plug your phone back in. (while still in download mode)
Now odin should recognize your phone and you should be able to flash any odin package you want. I would flash the uckj3 package followed by boogs kj3 kernel. From there you will be able to do whatever your heart desires with your phone.
Edit: for what its worth uxji2 is the rogers version of android 2.1 all of the rogers firmwares start with UX. UXJL1 is the 2.2 version and UXKH2 is 2.3.3
My jig is hopefully already on its way. I have watched multiple videos of his, a couple more than once even, but the problem is that many of the programs he uses are outdated (say, the 3 button fix). Understandably so, the Captivate is getting old, and I only recently got it. It's just difficult to decide what is the safer, most compatible option.
That certainly helps a lot from a fellow Canadian. I appreciate that.
Will get back once I find all the suitable packages and try it out.
Thanks everyone.
