There have been those that run into problems after installing the XXJP3I9000 update on the Samsung Captivate and attempt to reboot into recovery mode. The issue that they have is that since the Captivate has no physical home button to select an option like you can with the Galaxy S, you can't select an option, and therefore you can't reboot your device regularly. While I am in this same problem and have not figured out a solution, I have started this thread to post what knowledge I have about this issue so that others may help get this issue figured out. If anyone has information on how to fix this problem, please comment below. Let's fix this!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First of all, the key combinations that standardly would work with the original captivate firmware will not work anymore. Pressing all three buttons (Vol+, Vol - and Power) will only power cycle the phone, that is, until you let up on the buttons. Pressing Vol+ and Vol- and then plugging your phone into the computer will also do nothing. (By nothing I mean will take you back to the recovery menu)
Every key combination will only take you back to the recovery menu, so key combinations seem to be out.
If you boot into recovery mode, take out the battery and put it back in, all the while keeping the phone plugged in to the computer, the phone will enter the "POWER RESET OR UNKNOWN UPLOAD MODE", which will show your device in windows as being a Samsung USB Composite Device and a Samsung Mobile Modem (gadget serial, Windows 7) While this may be helpful, you cannot run ODIN or ADB in this mode, nor does this allow disk access. If you have Samsung Kies installed, it will detect a device, but will never complete loading it.
Other information with this method: On the phone screen, as well as showing "POWER RESET OR UNKNOWN UPLOAD DEVICE" the screen will also show the following in red:
RST_STAT =0X1
PMIC_IRQ1 =0X0
PMIC_IRQ2 =0x0
PMIC_IRQ3 =0x4
PMIC_STATUS1 =0x40
PMIC_STATUS2 =0x2c
If this helps anybody, it was a pleasure
Another method I found briefly was that after installing Kies, and rebooting the phone into recovery mode (again) my computer detected four new devices, two of them being Samsung Android devices and one being a disk drive. Potentially, without freezing or error, the drivers that are included with the Kies software will detect and allow for disk management while the phone is in recovery mode. Three of the four devices installed without error for me, but the fourth, the actual Android device, continued to say "installing device" until I unplugged the phone out of frustration. It has since not detected those four devices again, and I have yet to figure out how to do that again. The nice thing about that was that although the adb.exe reboot download command did not work, adb.exe did detect the phone. if this is true then rebooting normally or into download mode should be easy.
The last thing I noticed is that button furthest to the left on the main screen on the captivate will close the recovery menu when pressed, and leave the background behind, and then will reopen the recovery menu when pressed again. This is showing me that the four touch buttons are operable, but not configured. If it were possible to reconfigure the actions that pressing these buttons do, then it would be easy to be able to reboot the device normally.
I have compiled information to the best of my ability, and here is a question to ask, that I think will help solve the problem. Can the captivate with I9000 2.2 software run adb in recovery mode?
Comments, Questions, and Most of all, answers would be appreciated for me, as well as for other users with the same problem as I. Hopefully, this thread can be the solving point for this problem.
Many Thanks,
TouchofDestiny
An Update: The reason that the combinations don't work for me or either people is because they (and I) fail to install the captivate kernel, and that is making the volume power button controls useless.
same here i put froyo from the galaxy s i9000 and i cant change the rom or get into recoverymode because buttons dont work man this sucks and 3G or Edge doesnt work.....
You're problem is a little different. If you can't get into recovery mode, than that means you aren't in recovery mode, which means you can use ADB to enter download mode and use Odin to flash your phone. I have given up looking for a solution, and have sent my phone back to AT&T for a replacement. Since I'm still in my thirty day trial period, it doesn't matter if I used different firmware or not. Hopefully others won't get into the situation I had. For me, this thread is complete.
hi,
I solved the same problem doing this:
start odin.
take out battery. plug in USB. press both volume buttons. insert battery while pressing those buttons.
Done. download mode should appear.
yep, same boat
I am in the same position here. I downloaded the froyo leak and installed it with odin, no problem there. Upon startup into froyo, all was good, except my phone was stuck in horizontal mode until I tilted it vertical, *then* it would go horizontal. So basically I am 90 degrees off kilter. I decided to look around for another rom to try, and in the process managed to get stuck in recovery mode. Couldn't tell ya what firmware I have, just what is on the endless recovery screen that I cannot get out of!
I have no external microSD card, only the SIM card, and no way to get it recognized on my XP or win 7 system.
Really, really stuck here, guys. I do have the androidsdk installed, if there is a way to get it to reboot. As it is, adb cannot see the device, so I am looking at a truly bricked phone.
And yes, this is a US phone, which is why the power button and home button are not mapped (I assume).
I am DESPERATE for some help here!
and while I am at it...
I WAS able to get into download mode with the shovel guy originally by using the 2 volume keys+power, usb (odin up), battery in, release power.
No more. No key combo works.
Totally bricked the Samsung, which is supposed to be impossible!
when you are on the i9000 rom the only button that will get you in download mode is the vol down
That's HUGE!
You, sir, are a gentleman, scholar, and all-round smart guy! How did I miss that? I coulda SWORN I was getting into download mode with both volume keys. I've never been so happy to see a little Dalek dude with a shovel in my LIFE. 2 minutes in the one-click installer and now I'm back in business!
Thanks for helping a terrified owner out, and preventing a trip to the AT&T store.
I cannot go to download mode
I have the same problem here. Stuck in the recovery mode after upgrade the froyo and had the orientation problem. How do you go into download mode or power reset or unknown upload mode? Any button combination doesnt seem to work for me.
How do I do?
Please HELP. I am struggling here
Thanks
the key to the i9000 rom/kernel button combo is VOL DOWN + using the USB trick. do not press vol up + down, just the down while you are plugging in the usb cable
i too am stuck in recovery mode. the only way i can get into download mode is by using both volume buttons. just holding the down button just sends me to revoery mode as well. how can i fix my phone in download mode?
nevermind, reinstalled 2.2 and it works now.
Eureka I got it...I think
I installed froyo 2.2 i9000 on my captivate and got stuck in recovery mode...power button doesnt select and when I hold down the up and down vol buttons I couldnt get the downloading icon anymore either. Then I remembered something from another post....
Home + Vol Down + Power = Downloading Icon
It worked for me....let me know if this helped....I'm officially unbricked.
Hey. I'm in the same boat. My Captivate has I9000 firmware running it and it won't run properly. I can't access the settings to enable USB debugging in order to boot in either Recovery or Download using adb and no button combination works for me. I can't use button combos to boot into either Recovery or Download mode.
Does anybody have any idea what is going on and how to fix this?
JPBentley-- Since the I9000 firmware is set to use physical buttons, and the Captivate doesn't contain any, once you get into recovery mode, you cannot get out. The standard Captivate key combinations to get into download mode do not work, as do the combinations to get into download mode via the I9000 firmware. Basically, you get to a dead end. Unless there is some way to flash the phone's ROM outside of download mode, which I doubt, your best bet is to return the phone for a replacement. After haggling around with AT&T for a while, they admitted that installing the I9000 ROM doesn't invalidate your warranty, so they should take it back. They did with mine, and now I'm running the official Froyo leak. Good luck with your new phone!
SOLUTION
For all those that are having this problem, Ive struggled with it & tried EVERY possible button combination & nothing worked.
The ONLY solutions I have found is to use a usb JIG. Take out the battery, sim card & sd card, plug in the Usb JIG & put the batter back in. Give it a couple of seconds & I'tll enter recovery mode without pushing any buttons. You dont even need to push the power button, it's that simple.
Here is an image of how to make one if you are electronically inclined, personally I am not so I found a local electronic parts store & they put on together for me.
If you want, you can also buy one online, I cant post a link becuase Im a new member but just search for "samsung usb jig" on ebay.com & youll find plenty.
shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=samsung+usb+jig&_sacat=See-All-Categories
yes, i think you need to build a jig or buy one online if you want to play with custom rom. you may not need it now, but you may need it just in case.
I have the same problem, i can get into recovery mode. I can also get to download mode but Odin doesnt see my phone and neither does adb. By pulling the battery with no buttons pushed it goes straight into recovery mode. Looks like I have a brick now. If anybody has any suggestions please let me know.
That's not even close to a brick. Are you using a usb port closest to the motherboard on your pc? Is your cable good? Make or buy a jig, that will put your phone into download mode.
Hi all,
My phone is now bricked with the phone--!--pc symbol on bootup, and I tried to search for solutions everywhere but no go. Please please help me with this as I don't have unlimited warranty on this phone... and won't be able to exchange...
So, the root of the problem is that the normal hold down volume + plug in cable OR hold down three buttons until it reboots twice to go into download mode will not work on my phone! nothing happens at all when I try that, (I even tried every single button combination and holding them for a period of time...)
Here is what happened:
I wanted to get Froyo running on my phone, so I tried to follow directions using the Froyo leak.
I tried to get it into download mode when the phone was running and operational. None of the normal methods would work (volume button OR three button combo)
I eventually got it to go into download mode by using adb, and typing command adb reboot download.
adb got my phone into download successfully, i see the shovel, odin sees my phone, i was happy and started the odin process on my computer.
3 hours passed... odin was stuck at DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET message, phone was still showing the shovel
I thought something must have gone wrong and tried to start the process again.
This is where I am now, adb will no longer recognize the phone, and none of the button combinations will get me to download mode, all I see is the phone--!--PC symbol on startup.
I really have tried to search everywhere for a solution to this, but other than the 2 buttons+plug cable OR three button reboot twice, I can't find another way that will either allow me to get into download mode and try odin again, or just do a factory recovery.
Thank you guys so much! I really need some help on this one....
I don't suppose your battery is dead? Something to try - put the phone on your charger for about half an hour, then take the battery out for about 5 minutes. Make sure your sim/sd cards are removed, then install the battery, hold both volume buttons down, and connect the usb cable from the pc to your phone.
You can also make a download jig, which I'm told works wonders.
I was hoping that I don't have to go with the full out hardware solution, but I guess that's the way this piece of brick is demanding...
Jetzhou,
I am in the same boat as you are. So do you have your problem figured out yet???
I am in the hope that now you can shed some light for me.
Not sure if you guys have seen this post or not, but just in case you can get into download mode somehow, this may help get your 3 button working again. There may also be some people in the same position as you that may have posted in this tread.
The way I have been doing it is by getting Odin running, hold the vol up and vol down then plugging in the usb. I'm sure you may have already tried it that way, but just in case you used the pwr and one of the vol buttons instead, I thought I would mention it.
I know there have been problems with some people's hardware too, so there is a possibility of that.
not every phone has the button combo for download mode. it sounds like your boned, you should of talked to a few people before trying this kind of thing, its not hard but can easily be done wrong.
Look up on my posts in my profile I help a lot of people already going to download mode without using 3 button combo.
I installed Amimod that lets me change the transitions between apps, i ran it to change it to a cross fading transition and it said i had to reboot later to make the changes take effect. I kept that and mind and used some other apps. They all didn't load and gave me the "com.xxx.xxxx is unable to continue" type deal with the force quit button.
So i restarted my phone and now launcher loads but the pop ups come saying "com.android.phone is unable etc" or "com.android.media is unable...". There is no status bar and the phone doesn't lock. After about five minutes of trying to press the force quit button, nothing happens. I went into recover mode and cleared my cache but that didn't help.
[tldr] I can get my phone into download mode but is it possible to open the phone as a root folder on my computer so i could uninstall Animod and any changes it made? I don't want to master reset.
ROM reflash is only option.
I reflashed using odin but now its stuck in a boot loop with the att logo. When i plug it into the usb it loops the loading sign and the battery sign. What now?
Have you used odin before?
Which odin did you use?
What build is your phone?
Can you still get into download mode?
I have not used odin before this was my first time.
I used the one that is prepackaged with the .pit and .tar file "I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0.exe"
My phone was stock android that i rooted.
Cant get it into download with any button combo.
Under your battery left side on the white sticker. Your phone had a build number. Mine is 1008. 10 meaning 2010 08 meaning august. What is yours
Also tell me exactly what you have tried to get into dl mode
Build number 1011, and now my phone wont even turn on. When i hold the power button it is unresponsive, and its not dead i charged it.
Looks like you will need to try to force the DL mode with the odin instructions or get a jig and see if that works
Download mode
remove all sd, sim, bat
Put bat back in
Hold volume up abd down
Plug in usb
In it works great, if not usb jig
Going forward do not use odin one click use this method
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10056254&po
i got it into download mode using the button combos (battery out then hold vol up and down etc) and used the odin 1 click downloader for captivate, but it failed twice.
It got to the point where I had to buy some resistors to make a USB jig. The jig worked fine and put it into download mode but Odin still failed...Twice more. Now my phone wont even show the logo when i hold the powerbutton and the jig doesnt seem to work anymore. Its not the battery because i charged it for a full night before i tried jigging it again.
I would try the non one click odin method now except that i cannot get my phone into download mode.
I have no idea what to do now, it seems like its completely bricked.
At this point (if I'm able to replace it) would the workers at samsung or att be able to access my data at all? I only had the phone for 3 months. And would my warranty be void for rooting/flashing?
Hypothetically, yes and yes, but the reality is they will likely just wipe it and reflash it without ever looking at what's on it. Just tell them something went wrong when you tried to upgrade to Froyo via Kies. That's happened to enough people that they probably won't question it.
OK. here goes. after recently (in the last 24 hrs) upgrading to froyo, rooting my phone, soft resetting then hard resetting my phone, i think iv hit a massive brick wall and now my phone has had it. The reason i did the resets was to try and free up some internal memory so i could use OCLF, only to find out after everything got deleted and the apps that weren't were now all screwed, that voodoo is supposed to be much better. So naturally i downloaded the voodoo update.zip and went to apply it in recovery mode only my phone would enter recovery mode, and the up and down volume buttons would not work so i was unable to select anything. I then downloaded ROM manager and tried to enter recovery mode using that, only once in recovery mode the screen froze and wouldnt do anything for 15 mins. At this point i pulled the battery out and put it back in, then after the white AT&T screen loaded it would automatically take me back to the 'frozen' recovery mode screen without me having to even press anything, and i cant get past that now too. What can I do from here? Has anybody else had the problem of unusable up and down volume buttons?? Is my phone totally screwed or is there some way for me to get download & recovery modes working (along with the volume buttons)? thanks in advance
ps. just to make things even worse, androidSDK wont install properly on my laptop either....
You may need to make/buy a jig and put phone in download mode then flash back to stock Eclair 2.1 using odin. That would be my suggestion.
The package is in the development section, just read the first few pages before using it.
I'm using a rooted Captivate running 2.2 and am trying to get into Download Mode so I can flash to Cognition 5v2 but my phone doesn't go into Download mode using the 3 button combo. I'm fairly unsure about most things 'Android' but have been getting increasingly annoyed at the various little problems my phone has been having (Phone crashes randomly and have to take out the battery before I can turn it back on, phone stops connecting to my wifi while every other device in my house can, etc.).
So, how can I get my phone into Download Mode if it doesn't do it with the 3 button combo?
Thanks.
You can try a jig, they are easy to make or you can buy one. I used one when I had issues in getting to download mode when a flash went bad.
Do a search for 3 button combo fix and while your at it, make or buy yourself a jig. "What's a jig?", you ask! Do a search for that also.
OR try downloading terminal emulator and use these commands:
SU *enter*
reboot download *enter*
*enter* is the action of presing enter key, to be clear. GB bootloaders have 3button fix nvm the 3 button fix just get a jig makes it all easier.
If I may recommend something - stay away from the 3-button fix. There have been an inordinate amount of hard bricks as a result of the misuse of that particular fix. It was good for what it did when it came out, but there is a better/safer option now available that doesn't only flash half of the bootloader equation.
If you can get to download mode, flash stock Gingerbread with the Gingerbread bootloaders. It will take care of any 3-button issues, and you won't have to touch that particular fix. Once you're on those bootloaders, you can flash most of the roms on this site without any issues.
Just my two cents, though.
try the old combo...trun ur phone..take out the battery...put it back..hold both volume keys and insert the usb cable to the phone which is already connected to the coputer's usb port...
that shd get u into the download mode..if that doesnt work out..then buy a jig..or make one...and once u get into download mode and u r able to flash...then install gb bootloaders..bcoz that u will need for any newest gb custom roms..
and once u r on gb bootloaders...either i897 or i9000...u will be fine again..
PS..stay away from 3 button fix...
