[Project] Unlock Droid Bionic Bootloader [Update: 9/29 CWM!] - Motorola Droid Bionic

Hey Bionic owners,
Update #4: Looks like a Motorola update should be arriving soon... fire up those server-checking engines and keep checking over the next few weeks! http://www.droid-life.com/2011/09/30/official-droid-bionic-bug-list-fix-coming-in-november/
Update #3: Thanks to "phydo" we have a better set of instructions. Also, it seems someone's found a file on motorola-staging1.blurdev.com. Updated instructions and CWM flash below.
Update #2: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17962554&postcount=143
Update: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17507776&postcount=34
We ARE still looking for more files and more sources to help with the project. Please come forward if you can help!
There's a chance we can unlock the bootloader on this device with a simple method that led to the unlocked bootloader on the international Motorola Atrix and Sprint Motorola Photon 4G. Not sure if anyone's started the effort here. So, if you'd like to help the unlock process, follow the "Project Cheesecake" instructions below, or contribute in another way.
Ways to uncover unlockable bootloader:
Motorola, Verizon XML file sets for Motorola Droid Bionic
Project Cheesecake - finding update versions on Motorola servers
1. XML File sets
If you or someone you know can provide xml fastboot files that are tailored by Motorola for the Droid Bionic, you can help! Post them on XDA or another source to help the effort. If you wish to remain anonymous or keep the files unreleased, shoot me an email ([email protected]). Your file can be checked for an unlocked bootloader without compromising anonymity or file release.
FYI: XML sets may look like this: "fastboot-p2D_targa_cdma_targa-user-X.X.X-X.X.X_XX_DBN-55-110814-release-keys-Verizon-US.tar.gz"
2. Cheesecake
This project involves scanning Motorola's update servers for potentially helpful build files. You'll need to carefully follow the directions below to obtain files and then send those files to be checked out further. You can send me a PM or email ([email protected]).Alternatively, post the files on XDA or another source and I will check them.
Instructions:
List of servers:
Code:
master-lab.blurdev.com
master-demo.blurdev.com
master-dev.blurdev.com
master-qa1.blurdev.com
master-qa2.blurdev.com
master-qa3.blurdev.com
master-qa4.blurdev.com
master-staging1.blurdev.com
master-sdc1.svcmot.com
master-blur.svcmot.com
master-homer.blurdev.com
master-bart.blurdev.com
master-lisa.blurdev.com
master-maggie.blurdev.com
master-marge.blurdev.com
master-bqa1.blurdev.com
master-bqa2.blurdev.com
testcloud01-sdc1.blurdev.com
Root the device
Install the Bionic Clockwork Mod Boostrap Recovery
If you want, boot into recovery mode and create a backup. You will need to wipe all of your applications/cache later in the process.
Boot into recovery mode and choose "Wipe Data" then "Wipe Cache" to wipe your Bionic device.
Return your device to stock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1262540 -- Flash the FXZ file in RSD Lite.
Root your Droid Bionic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1254516
Install the attached "bionic-servers.zip" file in recovery
Reboot your device.
Enter the Phone/Dialer application and type this number:
Code:
*#*#4636#*#*
You can now see the diagnostic menu. Click the bottom option for "Motorola Services" and you should be able to see that the master cloud has changed to: "master-lab.blurdev.com"
Now go to Menu >> Settings >> About phone >> System updates
Check for an update!
If it doesn't work, continue with Step 13. If it works, continue with Step 20.
Edit the file "defaults.xml" located in /system/etc/motorola/com.motorola.blur.services.blur/defaults.xml
Change the server to a new one from the list at the beginning of the thread.
Boot back into recovery mode
Wipe Data and Wipe Cache
Reboot
Check for an update Menu >> Settings >> About phone >> System update
If it says "Update Available," let the update download. Do not install the update, because it could potentially brick your device. If no update is available, revert to step #13.
Pull the update.zip file from /cache [Root Explorer or ADB] and upload/post the file for developer interest.
Root explorer: Navigate to the root folder. Then click on "cache" and look for a .zip file. Long press it and "copy" the file to your SD card. Mount your device as a USB host and transfer the file to your computer.

Is it a retail or developmental SBF? Both ether way would be nice.

Retail. I cannot guarantee it will have an unlocked bootloader. I should also clarify I do not have it in my possession yet. Retail SBF's are pushed by Moto generally within the first week of release. I will keep you all posted.

i wish you guys luck in this. these companies need to start shipping with s-off.

Look for an xml.zip file of fastboot images because that is how the D3 firmware has appeared, not in SBF format for use with RSD Lite.
I believe this is how we may see many future firmware files, perhaps even exclusively.

The thing to remember about the photon thou is the method used to unlock the bootloader broke 4g. Hopefully that issue has been addressed and corrected but i honestly dont follow the photon

Good luck with this.
I can honestly say this will make or break my decision about me (as well as many others) purchasing the bionic.

+1. Wonder if Motorola shareholders understand locked bootloader=no sale?

wish there was someway i could help with this. bought a bionic yesterday, goodluck fellas, might see if i can get a few bucks to add to the bounty(college seems to be expensive).

well..........they do loose alot of business just because they are locked down.......thats the only reason i'm waiting for the prime. Bought a droid x2 when they first came and i didn't know what i was getting myself into = mistake. Don't get me wrong, there hardware is top notch and the call quality is top notch, but that's not justifiable for being so locked down.

They really don't. If they did, they would have made the switch by now. Rooting/development community users don't make up more than 5-10% of the users of the phones.

But considering it's been quite awhile since Moto Mobility has turned a profit, even if the bootloader complainers don't represent a lot of people, it can still bring them even closer to getting into the black.
Is Moto that profitable that it can afford to leave money on the table?

THIS IS AN ALHPA! Make sure you know what you are doing before flashing because there are a few things you need to do for things to work!
Thanks:
Thanks for cvpcs for publicly posting his source, which I compiled from.
Thanks slayher for his vendor setup, for a huge amount of help building my original AOSP build(I decided to switch to building from cvpcs' afterwards), and for the USB fix.
Thanks blackdroid for the idea to fix the sound.
Thanks to Speels for providing me a server to host this ROM on, and his unending moral support
Thanks to Jackson Barber for testing this.
Thanks to Justin Rogers, for giving the the DX proprietaries.
Thanks to Jrummy16 for helping me with some unlisted things
Thanks everyone for the constant support when this starting driving me INSANE
Thanks tanknspank for reading this over
Thanks to my girlfriend for letting me work on this and not getting angry(LOL)
Current bugs:
Phone reboots when you press the sleep/wake button
Video camera crashes
Accelerometer doesn't work
Not sure about others...
Please report any bugs to [email protected]
Features:
From source AOSP ROM
Extra mods in the settings
Zero Motoblur.
Rotary lock screen(Kinda defeats the purpose at the moment haha)
Lock screen music controls(Again defeats the purpose at the moment )
Built in USB tethering
Eliot Stocker's MusicMod
Cytown phone
More to come...
Pre-install steps:
If you would like USB to work, and to have the ability to pull the battery and always reboot into recovery(as long as you don't sbf) follow these steps. You will need USB debugging enabled for these steps.
Step 1: Download the files here for windows and here for Linux depending on what OS you are running. Linux and Windows only for now.
Step 2: Windows: Run dopreinstall.bat with USB debugging on, on your phone.
Linux: Open terminal and cd to the folder you extracted the zip from. Then type "chmod 0755 dopreinstall.sh" then "./dopreinstall.sh" with USb debugging on, on your phone.
How to install:
Step 1: Download and install Koush's bootstrap application if not already done.
Step 2: Copy Unleashed30AlphaDX.zip to your sdcard and then unmount
Step 3: Bootstrap recovery, then reboot recovery
Step 4: Mount /system in mounts and storage
Step 5: Install Unleashed30AlphaDX.zip from the sdcard
Step 6: Wipe data/factory reset(Not needed if coming from any Fission release, but recommended, as it may help fix some bugs)
Step 7: Reboot.
Step 8: Once your phone boots, give it around 2-3 minutes before you start using it. Tap the screen every 30-40 seconds to keep it from locking and rebooting.
Step 9: If you get stuck at the Setup Wizard, go back to the "Welcome To DROIDX" screen and tap all four corners until it either goes to the home screen, or when you hit the home button it goes to the home screen.
Step 10: Once out of the Setup Wizard, go to your settings, display, and set the display lock to 30 minutes so it doesn't keep shutting off and rebooting.
For USB to work, you will need to have the USB cable plugged in while booting or it will not charge or allow you to copy files to your sdcard. You can always charge through an outlet though.
When you boot, you may get a few force closes. Always select wait on these. You may also get Android System, select wait for that also.

CVPCS were working on a way to get around the bootloader issue by double booting or something of that nature. Is this essentially what your doing with this or is this a motorola rom with all blur removed?

What you are talking about is hijack. This uses hijack, this is from source. Has 0 blur in it. Stock 100%.
Stock Kernel?
I'm just interested, I very much appreciate any and all new roms on the market.

Yeah, it uses the stock kernel. That's what hijack is used for.
Alright I'm somewhat confused. Just to be clear, the kernel that is in this rom is NOT what is included in any of the motorola OTA's correct? If so, your awesome.

Oh sorry my mistake, I thought you meant the stock Motorola kernel, which it does use. Sorry for the confusion.
I'm confused as well. I thought hijacking meant you were able to kick into a custom kernel somehow. Can someone explain this hijack thing to me?
It sounds like the rom is just a stripped apart OTA.

No from my understanding this is very different. This is built from the actual source files provided by google, so it doesn't start from the ota updates from moto. Whereas other roms take the moto roms and strip away as much as they can, this starts from the actual source files from google so it contains nothing from Moto in the rom itself. Yes, you still get the Moto kernel, but this is a big step forward. To get to this point is really amazing--mad props to everyone.

Yeah the kernel is still a big problem but this should make custom roms a lot easier once the bugs are worked out. Full cyanogen needs a custom kernel I hear but at least we can get something close hopefully.

Agreed! A rom that is truly from source I would think should be much faster than a moto rom that has been stripped out! ...guess we will see!

I am really curious to see this rom progress but for now i think it may have too many bugs to use as a daily driver. I will be following this thread though for updates :-D Good Job Matt4542
Awesome! I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere but does it matter if I'm running the P3droid's leaked 2.3.320 software?
For what it's worth here's the Quadrant scores (no overclocks, etc., but it looks like stagefright is on by default in the rom). Yes it is fast.

Awesome! Are you running 2.3.15 or 2.3.320?
I tried this out on 2.3.320. It was really fast and is almost good to use as a daily driver. Of course not being able to turn the screen off without it rebooting is kind of a big deal. Great work guys - I have been wanting AOSP on my X for a long time.
I removed the install and went back to an old nandroid but will be following the progress closely. Thanks again.

Easy way to downgrade...
I should have read the instructions more carefully before using this tool. I have been unable to upgrade my Arc S ever since I unlocked it and thought this was a simple solution. Unfortunately I didn't read the details before I pressed the button. The string 4.0.2.A.62 is the build number, not the Android version. Now I downgraded to 2.3.4

Well, now this will most definitely be handy for those new members with unlocked bootloaders and a quick fix to getting device working again if they are in trouble i. e. hung or bootloops etc.etc...
No more crying messages.
(Really gets on my nerve.Because its always stated beforehand about the risk if something goes wrong, they never read this or pretend not to understand)
Its a good customer support act by SONY.
So,they have not given upgrades to 2011 devices. But,maybe now, after seeing all the threads here something might change.
By the way, would this tool in anyway hinder existing flashtool by bin4ry/androxyde in any way?
Just curious.
Thank you SONY.

Simple Root for Unlocked Bootloaders (SGP311/312)

It was clear that rooting some Sony devices was not as easy as it should be. This is for unlocked bootloader users, who want to quickly root a stock ROM by flashing a rooted boot.img. It is for the POLLUX_WINDY (ie. the SGP311/312) devices ONLY.
Do not install this on the Pollux (tablet Z with LTE), or it will no longer boot - use flashtool to fix it
There may have been some in the past, but these tend to be full of other "tweaks", like hideous amateur boot logos, and stupid changes like setting ro.secure=0. That's a bad idea, it can break things, and frankly, I know from experience of myself and others that there is a need for a FAST way to root your unlocked device after flashing a new ROM, rather than messing around with downgrading and OTAs.
This will NOT work on locked bootloader, but this is not intended for them. This doesn't include 9001 different recoveries either, like some "kernels" do. This is the stock kernel, with root added, and nothing stupid added.
There is one security improvement made - ro.adb.secure has been set to 1. This is an important security feature, please don't complain about it. If you don't use ADB, you'll never see it, and it won't change anything. If you use adb, it will offer you greater security on 4.2+ stock Sony ROMs, which don't have this feature enabled. You will be prompted to accept the computer connection on the phone, just like in "AOSP" Android 4.2 and above.
The downloads are available above, in the "Downloads" tab. If you have a particular version you wish to request, simply post the kernel.sin. I have made this for only the SGP311/312 (Pollux_Windy) Tablet Z phone images right now, but will consider expanding it for other devices if there is demand and people who can test.
Enjoy simple root, without the nonsense. None of the "don't mirror my files" crap. None of the "please give me donations", none of the "omg credit me as the best person ever". Feel free to share, use, re-use, mirror, enjoy. And I think you'll find that these files are rather helpful for the unlocked bootloader root community I've been thinking about making them for months, but it seems that nobody has ever bothered to.

Correct.
But, since I feel generous, if you upload me the kernel.sin file from your LTE model, I will make a rooted boot.img for it. You can attach them to a post here if you like - just the kernel.sin. Please name them per the stock ROM version, so I can label it correctly.

Hi there, thanks for your reply. What do you mean by the kernel.sin file from my LTE model (mine is the HK version) ? I have taken a photo shot regarding my pad's rom and kernel version details for your reference as attached. If there is not the information that you need, please tell me how to get the "kernel.sin" file from my pad ! Thanks again for your kindness !

The attachment is rooted for this version. As you didn't give me the firmware version (ie. 10.A..whatever...), I won't add it to the list. Please test and let me know if it works. If this fails, just re-flash kernel using flashtool.

You just did a ro.secure in the ramdisk

Nope. Setting ro.secure=0 is NOT the right way to root.
The ramdisk is modified, it will detect if you have root already, and if not, it will install SuperSU and the corresponding su binary on root. I also set ro.adb.secure=1, to add extra security for the device (now you need to approve ADB connections to unrecognised computers).
If you use ro.secure=0, this will break many apps with "root detection", as well as being a horrendously ugly hack, which introduces all sorts of vulnerabilities. ro.secure should always be set to 1
I strongly advise you don't use root methods that set ro.secure=0, as well as any kernels that do it. It's much safer to not have a rooted ADB shell lying available to anything that connects to your device... Including... you know... an app running on your device that initiated an adb connection to 127.0.0.1
So yes, this gives you root without adding stupid extra security holes like many kernels and "root methods" do

Instead of going through all the trouble of unlocking the boot loader and flashing an image, use the Vroot tool instead; it works fast and and does not require unlocking the boot loader. Search this forum for information about the Vroot tool.

[MANUAL OTA] G2 VS980 39A Lollipop (No root)

MANUAL LOLLIPOP 39A
Lollipop has been found on VZW servers thanks to JackpotClavin. We don't know when the official LP OTA will officially happen, so here's a the manual way to do it.
The original guide was created by the awesome developer xdabbeb who figured out how to do the manual ota. I will try to go into as much detail as possible to make this possible for anybody who wants to do this with Lollipop on the vs980.
Step #1: Restore to 27a KDZ. Go here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476
Step #2: Use Stump to obtain root. Go here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/orig-development/root-stump-root-lg-g3-sprint-verizon-t2850906
Step #3: Download updates to phone:
***27A_TO_28A.bin:
https://pvzwmdmcdn.vzw.motive.com/firmware/LG_VS980_27A_TO_28A.bin
***28A_TO_39A.bin:
https://pvzwmdmcdn.vzw.motive.com/firmware/LG_VS980_28A_TO_39A.bin
Step #4: Download Root Explorer from Play Store:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.root.browserfree&hl=en
Step #5: Open Root Explorer and copy LG_VS980_27A_TO_28A.bin to /cache/fota/ and rename it extact to "dlpkgfile" without the .bin extension.
Step #6: With Root Explorer give all permissions to dlpkgfile.
Step #7: With Root Explorer make sure the folder "recovery" exists in /cache/recovery. Give all permissions also and create folder if its not there.
Step #8: Download ADB-Tools.zip and place ADB folder in your C:/ directory.
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95916177934537040
Step #9: Press the Windows search function and type in "cmd" and open cmd.exe and type c:\adb
Step #10: Enable USB developer mode and plug USB cable to computer and use ethernet mode.
Step #11: In cmd type: adb shell
***Then type su
***Then copy and paste code and press enter after each one:
Code:
echo "--update_package=/cache/fota/dlpkgfile" > /cache/recovery/command
Code:
am start -n com.lge.lgfota.permission/com.lge.lgfota.permission.DmcEzUpdateStart
Phone should then shut down and start OTA process.
Step #12: Go to step #5 and repeat process extactly with "LG_VS980_28A_TO_39A.bin"
ENJOY LOLLIPOP!!!!!

RESTORE TO 27A AFTER LP
If you want to go back to 27a after trying out Lollipop you need to download new Lollipop USB drivers:

Thanks lawlrus. I've had this G2 way longer than I've liked but can't seem to find a better phone to upgrade to. I've almost pulled the trigger on the G3, but its basically the same dang phone as the G2. Tried the HTC phones before with their Sense style and like LG's OS better.
But there might be hope in the horizon with the Galaxy S6 edge. Looks very interesting to me unless LG bring out a killer G4 really soon.

Eh, Samsung and Verizon seem to have rooting on lockdown anymore like the note 4.
Also with the turbo even though its a moto. Next phone I'm getting is an n6.
Seems like they are making it harder for root and exploits to bypass the security check. Its a good thing and a horrible thing.

If I do get the S6, it be with a more open T-Mobile. I really like their crazy CEO. He cracks me up, like a rockstar/coke head, CEO. LOL Just hope with their 4 million new customers this past year he really beefs up the LTE network and merges with Dish, leaving Europe's Telekom.

I need the unlimited data which only TMO and Sprint offer. Sprint though is crap in my area. I can burn anywhere from 10-60gb a month. With TMO's 2 lines unlimited for $100 a month, best deal ever.

Yea I've seen speeds of 40mbps around town. At home it's about 3-8. Once we get the LP kdz for vs980 or root and tmo releases their LP a port should be possible.
Koooooollllll....I've got my fingers crossed.....My speeds are 38-40
..Verizon was 1-2 no joke in same place....Is it truly unlimited speeds only had a week or so

I was getting that error to when I was messing with the boot.img, trying to get root. You aren't messing with any files before trying to go to 39A are you?
It may just be a generic error when anything is slightly off.

Has anybody downloaded and installed a screen lock app on their P4? I downloaded one called Screen Off and it wrecked my face unlock. It works on my P3XL, but not on this phone. It was an easy fix by forgetting my face data, but I always like using some sort of screen lock app rather than the power button every time, and I'm wondering if the new face unlock biometrics don't jive with those types of apps. Anybody else experienced this?

Well if you are using the face unlock then why would you need something to avoid the power button? Maybe I'm not understanding...
Face unlock unlocks the phone, yes.
But to lock the phone, I like using a widget or onscreen bottom to lock my phone to save the actual power button from over use. But the app I downloaded didn't jive with face unlock. When I pressed the icon to lock my screen, it shut everything off, including the face unlock.

Thanks for the link, but I think I'll just make do with the power button. I've attempted to root one of my phones in the past, but ended up making a paperweight.
If anybody is interested, this screen off app works with face unlock. It's pricey though at $6.99, unless you use the ad supported version.
So I haven't had a Pixel device since the 2XL. I ended up returning my 3XL because I didn't find myself liking it too much + was dealing with one too many issues.
I moved to OnePlus and now I've ordered the 4XL. Should be here Monday.
I've kind of forgotten how to do OTA updates on Pixel, and I'm curious if anyone can fill me in on how it's done. A quick refresher would be appreciated!
Because with OnePlus, you just go into the settings app and choose "local upgrade", find the OTA zip and hit install.
I believe there isn't anything like that for Pixels, and since TWRP seems it may not be a reality in the near future, I'm wondering how else I'd update my device to the newest monthly patches without having to use fastboot?
I am aware of removing the -w in the script but that still does a factory reset even though it keeps /sdcard/ intact. That's been my experience with it anyway.
Sorry for the long post and I know this is more of a question for the future but I thought I'd be prepared ahead of time.
TL;DR: A quick refresher on how to perform an OTA update without TWRP and without any kind of wiping.
Thanks in advance!!

Going forward, if you are using any Tulsadiver nods, enable those first after you update the monthly security patches. Sometimes google changes codes, which can cause bootloops when modifying the systemUI. :good:

Just got this P4 tonight unlocked the bootloader and was trying to copy the boot image from my computer to the phone but my computer will not allow me to. I can transfer files but I can't transfer the boot image. Anybody have any idea as to why I can't?
