Researchers breakthrough in full duplex technology - Off-topic

Researchers at rice university in Houston have just made a breakthrough in wireless data speed technology. Meaning they could now make data speeds faster than 4g without building new towers. Here is more info on this site http://theunlockr.com/2011/09/07/re...ex-technology-could-double-wireless-capacity/

And those researchers and all their data will swiftly be removed from existence...
This is nice for consumers but sadly it will make the public happy. That can't be allowed in America. A happy public is a less subdued public.

Let me correct you here. It's not America,it's the whole world.4G,by the sound of it,sounds cooler.4G is more expensive. So everyone tries to sell 4G enabled devices for some more money.Sure,it is good to have such a fast connection, but what the hell?I don't even need 42mbps downlink on my PC.
Anyway,we are all money sources for those companies. They might find the cure for cancer or AIDS.If it's cheap, they won't even bother.
But anyway, apart from that, nice point raised there Marty.

Think about that just a little bit. If they cure cancer and other deadly diseases, what happens to the world population? There are elitists who would rather those deadly diseases not be cured. Sure, they do want just enough of a population to fill their coffers full of money. But they truly do not want to be beyond filthy rich. There's a point where the increase in population begins to be a burden on them. And any kind of existence where life is any more painful than having to raise their pinky finger is out of the question.

Ahaha woow, that thread went off topic crazy quick
I do believe cancer and aids will have a cure eventually, but not before they figure out a way to support the population increase it would bring. Heck, they probably already have the cures

I suppose one person might, if you count people flicking through channels
I even had to endure 5 minutes of New Moon last night while the gf searched for something to watch on sky. I thought "bloke with crap mullet haircut, girl with face like a slapped arse, nooooooo!" before grabbing the remote and flicking to anything else. I felt so unclean.

I know two women who think Tyra is god, one of them has practically no eyebrows left through over plucking while the other has spent too much time on a sunbed
The really sad part is had they not done so much to themselves believing they were living like models they would be absolutely stunning.

Sounds like my evening. Then I get the cold shoulder how I'm spending too much time on my PC or phone when she watches a load of rubbish like "Snog, Marry, Avoid". Yeah those programmes can be funny to laugh at, but, like Jeremy Kyle Show, the people on it are attention-seeking, camel-face asshats.

Possibly ALIEN LIFE

Just thought I had to share this! here's a link to yahoo article
http://news.yahoo.com/s/digitaltrends/nasascientistfindsevidenceofalienlife
I'd be more interested if they had found a cure for cancer or something.
Like, c'mon, aliens are exciting and all, but what if they're real? What's going to happen? Most likely - nothing. For the past 2000+ years there hasn't be a recorded face-to-face alien encounter so I highly doubt anything would happen.
But yeah, exciting none the least.

I'm very excited about this. I just hope these claims are true. I just think its kind of a coincidence that this happened, because there were rumors that the American government will soon admit that there is alien life. But its all hear say...idk. Plus this is way more of a big deal than a lame UFO. This is science! NASA is serious about this, they've invited 5,000 scientists to examine the evidence. If this isn't a big deal to anyone then wake up. If these claims become fact, it's the biggest discovery of man-kind.

We're rather shallow and jaded in this country, augoza. Don't expect too much.
There's no aliens
Lets face it, IF there is life out there intelligent enough to to find us and make contact, then the chances are that they would be much more advanced than us and either totally ignore us or destroy us. In the style of either "Independence Day" or "Mars Attacks"???
Im hoping its more like Mars Attacks personally.......
As far as Im concerned unless they bring us some kind of strange and exotic space meat and teach how to cook it then they can **** off.

Agreed. But lets face the facts first. NASA only CLAIMS so far. And what they found was just life on a micro level so far. No intelligent life. These organism's may be the only alien life besides us. As soon as someone says "aliens" most people jump to conclusions and think guns and destruction, But it could be as innocent as plant life on another planet.

humans have been building UFOs since the WWII

Well I personally think its silly to believe we're the only life in this whole universe. Its a strong theory. And I've heard about USA and other countries back-engineering alien craft. In my opinion, most legit UFO sightings were humans controlling the craft. Could be possible. BUT like I said people all those stories don't mean anything compared to this. No scientist has got involved with those theories. And yes I do somewhat support some theories. But this is science people. Hail science lol

The truth about cellphones (must read)

True story : I picked up a load of colored painted lumber in Atlanta and dropped it off in Lancaster, pa. An Amish family that made high end custom play sets for rich folks and wow the stuff the could build seemed like some from a Harry Potter movie. We started talking about technology and they didn't desire to have a cellphone or any phone for that matter. They seemed so much at peace with just the basics in life. Clearly they live in a area with malls but still appreciated life in a simple form. Now its 2011 and most folks can't go a day without cellphone use, and have a piss fit if they cell is about to die while at the mall. We stand in long lines waiting for the new it phone then rush home to make an unboxing video as others tune to watch us in awe to remove the plastic off a device. We call up the carriers begging for an update to get a new device.. log in to sites like this and complain about the device and while asking developers to stop spending time with your family and hurry up on that root so i can do a whole bunch of nothing with my phone. I'm not saying cellphones are bad, if your wife ran out to pick up pizza and got a flat you definitely want her to have one in that situation. I'm talking bout being apart of the gimmick crowd...

I'm happy to be there. My firm belief is that technology will produce the paradise we all want. Unlike some conservative types, I don't adhere to the rule of suffering in life all the time. They think the only good person is one who is 24/7/365 suffering and doing without. We make technology to overcome the environment, not to continue to suffer in it. The only reason there is any form of suffering in the world is because technology hasn't developed to the point of addressing all of the needs. As long as a person holds onto their ethical and moral integrity, suffering is needless.
Don't like this idea. Some people always say that these are just devices that call and text, everything else is excess and we don't need it in our daily lives. Like we should be grateful we have them. But this is called progress. At one time, we didn't have cars or color tv or this latest gadget. And we have adjusted our lives accordingly so that they are essentials in day to day living. It's foolish to just live in the past or sit still, the world moves at a fast pace. If we didn't feel a need for more, innovation would just stop. They don't even call cell phones "cell phones" anymore, they call them mobiles because that's what they are. Mobile devices
Yes, I agree with you geeksquadryder. As we are forgetting what a real life is? We need mobiles for doing our daily work but some people getting mobiles for not satisfying must needs but for fun. We know how much impact these mobiles can have in our life in helping and ruining. So, its upto the head of the home to teach or drive his/her home to be happy with/without things of needed.
Our biggest mistake was coming down from the trees in the first place. Everything since then is just compounded error. Too late to go back now!

people are constantly saying how technology has made ungrateful and ruined lives. I don't see how wanting the most out of your phone can ruin your life. This is called evolution/progress. I'm glad we have cell phones and I'm glad technology is getting better and I hope one day I won't have to lift a finger to do many of the tedious tasks I do on a day to day basis.

If we just stick to "need" when we live life, we'd be a very poor society. Much of the art and technology we have today have made it so far for want of innovation and pleasure. And yes, also for pure fun.
It's not excessive, it's creative, new, interesting and in this way, important. Especially since we came down from the trees...

Sorry to tell you but technology is important. I always remember the economics of technology, where tech has the potential of drastically changing supply, demand or both.
It increases the quality of life, and frees us to do things that are more important, like putting funny captions on pictures of cats instead of adding up a few thousand lines of labour costs.
You read HHGTTG, there was one book where people used leaves as currency...

As i said earlier, it's too late to go back now. I disagree that technology improves lives though. More people die because of technology than are saved by it. You have to remember that as a race we have stopped evolving; instead our tools are evolving. Rather than changing to adapt to our environment we are trying to change our environment to adapt to us. This is not a good thing.

Wow, I could berate you over that. But I won't. The reason I want to is because THAT is a main part of the conservative/religious ideal. It's ignorant because they believe they...embodied in their gray matter...have all understanding and knowledge of the universe and existence. Because of this, they push hardship and suffering on society as something good for us.
These pea-brained idiots never consider they do not know everything. They have a thought, and because *they* have that thought, it has to be correct and righteous. So therefor they proceed to prevent society from having peace and they thwart all technological progress as much they can and call it evil. They are the kind that believes only someone who is constantly suffering is a better person. And they do that to people.
They see one aspect of something and conclude that it leads to what they believe it should.
You'll have to pardon my intensity because here in America, that is exactly what happened to my life. My life was wiped out as though it was nothing to me by ideological/religious/conservative zealots. With an attitude of, "You'll thank me when you recover". The only problem is they had no clue how destructive their ideology was to me and it obliterated my life.
I'm a godless Atheist but this is not a religious discussion! I love technology but i admit that the cost far outweighs the benefits. The global gene pool is getting weaker by the day while we rape the planet that we rely on to survive.
Advancement is inevitable but so is entropy. Equilibrium will be returned but i guarantee it won't be in a way that's favourable to human life.

Amen, I mean, I agree to that (zing!).
Truth is, I believe that technology helped me a lot. I mean, Microsoft Excel is a million times better than an A3 piece of paper and a calculator.
But certain techs makes us dumber, and not smarter. We don't use it to expand ourselves and our capabilities, but to limit ourselves and reduce innovation and creativity.
Case in point; iPhone.

Flash mob robbery!!!

Just wanted to make sure everyone here is up to date on flash mob robberies, they are halarious, if you dont know about them yet check out you-tube and watch a few videos.
Basicaly the idea of a flash mob has turned from random bits of dance and entertainment to 50-100 people simotaniusley robbing/looting random corner stores and gas stations. I do not condone these acts (while I do think the videos are entertaining) and thought others may like to share opinions on this, so what do you guys think? I say its not long before a store owner pulls a weapon on these fools and we see mass casualties in a 7-11, how else are they gonna defend themselves against such a thing?
Is this happening in other counties or is this more of a U.S. based thing as of yet?
Please share which vidoes you find the most entertaining!!!!
(video for those unfamiliar)
I don't find anything remotely funny about small business owners being robbed by gangs of morons who deserve nothing more than being put against a wall and shot, one after the other, in the knee-caps.
I hope somebody does exactly that. On camera. Perhaps THEN i will laugh.

Sorry I still see the entertainment value in these videos (big fan of worlds dumbest lol). However I believe we are on the same page, that the next progression is going to be a store owner shooting at these groups of wild teens looting there store, untill than whats stopping them? The thought process must be "they cant catch all of us" I guess, but im not sure why nobodys wearing masks, idiots must not understand that there are cameras almost everywhere. Imagine if you were a cop and were first on scene to one of these calls best bet might be to baragade your cruiser against the door and lock them all in untill backup arrives, however that locks the loanly clerk and any possible legit patrons inside as posible hostages. Could you imagine going in to pay for gas or buy some smokes and 50+ kids run in and start looting the place!

Yeah. Great, some store owner shoots one and the rest beat him to death...
That's entertainment alright..........
As someone who very regularly has to deal with the kind of moron who thinks its acceptable to steal from and threaten those who work in customer service I do not find this remotely funny.
I see, all too often just how badly the people that do these jobs can be affected by even a minor incident and something such as this could have serious repercussions on the life of a completely innocent person who is not insured against any loss or injury and will receive nothing in compensation should they find themselves unable to work afterwards.
By simply reposting these videos you are glorifying these acts and only inciting more of this kind of action by the type of mindless cretins who make life difficult for those of us who work hard to earn a living.

It's OK, you did call them fools after all, and you do raise the point that it won't be long before it turns really ugly, i.e, loss of life ugly. Had anybody thought you were glorifying the acts the thread would be closed by now!
As CTM said, these things can only go south. The robbers come with knives, so owners buy guns and before long the robbers have guns. It's exactly what's happened in the USA, and as much as the gun advocates, i.e NRA members, defend their position.. it's completely illogical. The argument is cyclical. You defend your home with a BB Bat, robbers bring knives. You buy a knife, robbers bring guns. You buy a gun and before long your kid has accidentally shot himself to death.
The arguments go back and forth while the only clear and logical answer is to smelt every single fkin gun in existence. Fortunately it's the one thing the UK government here at home has gotten right.
The only guns should belong to the Army and Specialist Police forces. Beyond that, they shouldn't even be made. The only reason these cocky little ****es think they can get away with robbing innocent people is because most people are too sensible to start an arms race where nobody wins. And most people are too decent to shoot somebody, even when they themselves are being robbed.

I would swing like Babe Ruth if i thought a direct hit would save the life of someone i loved!
Tony Martin was jailed because we don't have the 'Castle doctrine' in this country. The biggest mistake he made wasn't to open fire on the assholes who tried to rob him. It was missing, and then not burying the bodies that messed up his life!
Like i said, it's a good thing that the law doesn't agree with me!

It's the law that you have in the US that say's you have the right to protect yourself in your own home, against those that would trespass or do harm against you on your property.
Somebody breaks into your home and you shoot them? Their fault!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_doctrine
Sadly even this can lead to f**k ups of epic proportions. Take for instance new US laws that allow for entry to a property by law enforcement without the need for a warrant, or for announcing "Police..come out with your hands up..."
Tragically, a recent case highlighted the flaws in this. Police went to an ex-Marines house, on false evidence that he was supplying drugs. Rather than knock on the door they tried to break it down. He thought that his home was being invaded, so to protect his family to picked up his rifle and opened fire on the 'intruders'. He was shot forty times.
What would you have done?
If neither he, or the police were packing guns, everyone would have lived!

That's what I thought you were referring to, and yes it is an epic fail, no matter how "justified" you are I doubt it's ever worth it. I have a friend who shot and killed an intruder, no charges ever filled however I know he well never be the same. Partially in a good way as his life wasn't always on the up and up and has since in ways changed for the better for both him and his family, but we'll never be the same.

These videos and the acts portrayed within are just terrible. I for one believe we need more small "mom and pop" stores, not less. Acts like these can very well cause someone innocent to be hurt (the morons doing these things NEED to be hurt....but I digress....) and drive these small stores out of business. Terrible, just terrible.

Petition to end fractions and convert to metric in USA. Go sign!

http : // wh.gov/lgPsl
The metric system has been officially sanctioned for use in the United States since 1866, but it remains the only industrialised country that has not adopted the metric system as its official system of measurement. Not only will the metric system finally allow the US to easily communicate and trade with other nations, It would also eliminate the need of fractions making math and engineering measurements much easier to create and read. On December 23, 1975, President Gerald Ford signed the Metric Conversion Act into law; this act gave official sanction for the United States to convert to the metric system of measurement. The money saved up for the conversion was later put into the army and we gave up metrication. www[DOT]nist[DOT]gov/pml/wmd/metric/upload/1136a.pdf
Alright. Let me just give one example. NASA lost a $125 million Mars orbiter because a Lockheed Martin engineering team used English units of measurement while the agency's team used the more conventional metric system for a key spacecraft operation, why? Because of the US using customary. Engineers have to convert everything they do to metric, it would be easier to just do it in metric in the first place? Metric is accurate without the need of fractions. When he said trade, he did not mean Currency, he meant the fact that we make our things to customary units and the other countries to metric units. What if you ordered a computer and thought the measurement was in inches but it turned out to be centimeters? When we send our blueprints to factories outside of the USA, we have to convert everything. It takes a lot of time already just to design everything, but now we have to convert the measurements? People who get Fs in mathematics could get As if it wan't for having to simplify fractions and having to work with them in technology classes and workshops and in regular math class. Decimals are a hundred times easier.
How about every country switches to our system instead?
It would be fantastic if this happened... but honestly, the majority of people in the U.S. simply can not handle it. I'm sure the majority of folks here on this forum would do great, though...
Here in Southern Arizona they were going with the push to go metric on one highway (I-19):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_19
"Citing motorist confusion arising from the metric signs on I-19, Arizona DOT's Tucson district announced that new signs on I-19 would use United States customary units."
Fail on citizens of the U.S.... :crying:

Ah but metric makes so much more sense to those that actually use math. As the OP hinted at, it's just one more thing helping the U.S. lag behind the rest of the world. More of a hassle, but still. ...though really, nothing much for the typical person to learn beyond how to pay attention to road signs and use the correct values on their speedometer (that simple task is why we aren't metric today, IMO).

Here is the big hurdle to overcome. Our perceptions of the things we use to measure in the current system. In the US, you say it's 10 C outside. Most of us here will scratch our heads and wonder, does that mean it's hot or cold outside? Now, you say it's 50 F, oh, ok, I better grab a sweater. To the rest of the world, you guys grew up with the metric system, we didn't. In our minds, we measure everything in our current system. I'm to old to change my ways. I have a feeling most adults hear will feel the same.

I have been on XDA since 2010... It is just that I have taken on a new alias so I made a new account for it. If 3 years doesn't count as much, then I don't know what does... But I did stay out of OT.
Actually, i feel the Celsius change would be far easier.
0 C: Freezing point of water
0 C-15 C: Cold
20 C: Warm
~23 C: Normal room temp
30 C+: Hot
100 C: Boiling point of water
Doesn't sound hard, starts from 0 and ends at 100 (for water) and not somewhere in between.

Please help me overcome depression from a recent rejection

I asked my person of interest for the first time in my life. We met in a group discussion which went for 2 weeks and I had a liking for her from 1 month ago. When I asked, she was nice about it and said no and that we should stay friends. I shrugged it off and said OK, thanks for being nice.
The problem is that, I can't think of anything else now, I know that the world isn't ending just because 1 person rejected me. However I can not stop myself and it is turning me into a depressed wreck. How do you guys deal with it? What is your story?

Every experience with a person of the opposite sex, whether friendship or romance, is a lesson to learn to prepare you for meaningful relationships later, such as marriage. Learn from it and move on. Remember, being friends with girls is good, because they have other friends who are girls, and may try to hook you up.
Excreted from my Nexus 5
[Guide] Headphone/Earphone Buying
You've had a strong mating reaction to a member of the opposite sex. Your body has released a flood of dopamine into your brain so you will feel vaguely sick and your appetite will be suppressed.
I suggest playing Counter Strike for twelve hours a day until your brain functions return to normal.
I find distraction is the best reaction in this situation your mind will get over it with time, and not much else. So keep yourself busy while you wait! Play some games you've not played in a long time, (like counter strike as suggested above ), or do you have any android projects you have always wanted to try like making a custom Rom, or beta test some non stable roms for some devs, I also recommend going for a long walk. It sounds to simple to make any difference but a long walk can give your mind a chance to rattle things out and come to terms with things lastly your right, the worlds not going to end for some girl, so don't beat yourself up about it your only human and we have good and bad experiences, just be glad that ones over

When a study about love was carried out, scientists put subjects in an MRI scanner and looked to see what was going. They would show the subjects pictures of somebody they loved to see which areas of the brain were activated and then show them pictures of somebody they hated. The same areas of the brain were activated in both cases.
Right now you're suffering because of feelings of love for this girl, but when you start to hate her for rejecting you, the feelings that you have, and the reaction your brain has to it will be exactly the same. Either way it's angst and despair.
Love=Hate. Get your head around that!

The OP did ask how people here deal with rejection, so perhaps one of you married guys could answer that? My understanding is that wives say no all the time!
The tried and true method would be Alcohol of course. That's what guys usually turn to at these difficult times. To find out how that works, it's best to imagine the alcohol as Pac-Man running through your arteries, chomping away at all the nasty hormones until it's cleared all the levels. Once you're good and drunk all the hormones are gone, leaving you with a strange urge to eat a greasy lamb kebab, and a minging headache in the morning.

I prefer to let her drink alcohol, and much away at her hormones, and hopefully get her to stop rejecting me. Of course, it could backfire depending on the time of the month and poor choice of words or actions on your part, which of course you know you did a week later in some random argument... You know what, a beer sounds good right now.....

Time *will* make it easier. Think back to anything else in your life that brought you down, from simple things like not being able to buy that brand new game you wanted because you didn't have enough cash, right through to the more serious things in life, like losing friends and/or family and suffering grief. Think about those things and how it felt like you'd never get over them (depending on the seriousness of whatever it is you're thinking of), and then think about how you feel about it now. You'll realise that things just do get better over time.
Incidentally, I personally wouldn't take the advice to drink through it. Alcohol lowers certain chemical levels in the brain for days after that regulate how you feel. You can do yourself serious damage that way and turn a temporary problem into clinical depression, not to mention the fact that relying on alcohol for anything is a recipe for disaster.

I know what you're saying, and I wasn't trying to be heavy or down on what you said, but without moderation it *can* become depression with the addition of alcohol, over long term. A few nights cutting loose is obviously a totally different thing though.
I've personally known people start off just a bit low and end up fully depressed because of alcohol. It's unfortunately a very slippery slope as it *does* make you feel better when you're drinking, but leaves you lower than you started for a few days afterwards, which can lead to another drink because, "Hey, it worked last time, right?" And rinse and repeat. Sad becomes depressed becomes clinically depressed, and that can last for life if not treated correctly.
Anyway, this is far too heavy and now I'm having a sad. There's always the old adage, that the easiest way to get over someone is to get under someone else

I wouldn't seriously encourage anyone to drink to resolve issues. I'm a teetotaller myself so i find crying into my cornflakes works best for me when i'm blue, or going down the gym and pumping iron for an hour or two. We'll go with the latter one as it sounds more manly!

Yeah, I've been there but at least this girl of yours was nice about it and told you politely and even wanted to remain friends. The girl I fell for just ignored me completely and blocked me on all social media . My advice ? Go out with your mates. Hit the gym. Spend time with the family. Take up a new hobby. Video game a little. Just do something to take your mind off her . It's the holidays, cheer up
