I have an unlocked Bell Vibrant. I am planning a 10 day trip to the US next month and saw that the Bell travel plans are absolute rip-offs.
I was thinking of buying a prepaid SIM once in the US, similar to something shown here http://www.usasims.com
Will this work with my phone, I am not sure it the I9000m is a gsm phone or not. I guess its quad band, so it should work...but looking for some assurance and advice!!

You'll need to get an att Sim card to utilize 3g. Only 2g won't work Verizon's cdma network

I have been a long time Tilt/Kaiser user with ATT. I have an opportunity to get my hands on a friend's G1 for dirt cheap. I understand that T-Mobile's G1 will not support ATT's 3G to it's fullest extent. I'm crossing my fingers that there is a ray of hope that with research and future ROMs that someday the G1 will be able to support an ATT sim? I guess my question is...Is this a hardware restriction for ATT, or can a ROM make this a fully functional phone for an ATT user?
"T-Mobile's G1 will not support ATT's 3G to it's fullest extent" -- More like to any extent. I would think it would be as easy as sim unlocking the phone through t-mobile (have your friend, the owner of the contract, call), then pop the att sim in and change some web settings.

I'm not sure what you're asking here. If you SIM unlock the G1 and pop an ATT sim in, it will work 100% perfectly-- with the exception that it will only get EDGE. If you're asking can a ROM [sic] make the G1's 3G radios work with ATT, the answer is no. Never. Physically impossible. There are some wild reports of people having their G1s getting some 3G roaming in certain areas with their ATT sims, but these are rare exceptions, not the norm.
If you want a device shaped like a Dream that gets ATT 3G, consider a Rogers Dream. It has the proper 850/1900 MHz 3G transceivers for ATT 3G.

This answers the question. The TMO G1 has specialized transcievers that are tuned for ONLY the TMO network, which is why unlocked TMO G1s dont get 3G on any other network. So no, with your friend's G1, unless ATT decides to change their G1 carrier bands, there is no hope of getting 3G with it ever. Its a hardware problem, not a software problem. However, as suggested, if you want to be able to get 3G on ATT, get your hands on a Rogers G1.
I have a friend who currently has a Sprint BB (Tour) with a SIM card. He's looking to get the Captivate because it has a SIM card slot. I already know of the two different Network Types (GSM vs CDMA), and their different network frequencies. I was just curious if that SIM would work in that phone?

No. Sprint & Verizon used CDMA networks. AT&T and T-mobile use GSM. Completely different radios. Square peg/round hole.
Thanks. I understand the CDMA/GSM differences, just thought that the SIM would support GSM networks and with the Captivate being a GSM phone, it would just work. But w/o an AT&T account, that just really wouldn't work out.

Sprint sim in the BB is for overseas use making it a global phone. The sim that is in there should be Vodafone or something like that. It is so it can be used in the UK or accross the pond.
You can have the BB unlocked and put an ATT sim in it and use the edge network but no 3g. But the sim that is in the BB now will not work on ATT network.

Negative. It's not for use overseas like Verizon's BlackBerry devices.
The reason for the SIM Card in the Sprint BlackBerry devices is for connection to the old Nextel IDEN network for their push-to-talk system.
What that means is, though, that it will -not- work in a Samsung Captivate because though the IDEN SIM is the same size/shape as a GSM SIM, but they are not even remotely the same. Still square peg/round hole like a previous poster said.
Hi. I am concidering to buy a Galaxy Tab 10.1 from the united states. But i was wondering if it would support the norwegian GSM network ?
Somehow i got the impression that Europe and USA have different types of technologies to connect phones to their carriers..
Becase we have _INSANE_ taxes here in norway, i'm guessing it will be much much cheaper having a friend sending it overseas from the us.
But i need to know if its compatible with norwegian gsm-based network.

Some will be gsm, some not (i think verizon is cdma, tmobile is gsm; gsm needs sim card). Just make sure that the model you buy requires a sim card. Then it will work. Alternatively you could get one from Canada.
It's possible, but consider two things (as above)
1. get a GSM tab (onw with a simcard slot)
2. have it unlocked (sim lock removed)

Unfortunately i dont know anyone that lives in canada. I need a friend that can ship it directly to me, with a note attached to it saying "happy birthday" or something to get away with the taxes from customs.
There are two types of GSM Tablets in the US. One is from AT&T, the other T-Mobile.
Both tablets support 850/900/1800/1900mhz bands so if your carrier is on these bands you should have no problem getting it to work. Whether its 3g capable or not, that's a different story as at least in the US only AT&T has the tri band UMTS necessary to get 3g and voice capability.

I'm actually with Virgin, same network as Bell but much cheaper. You could check out what they have on offer.
So I checked online, Wind uses UMTS band 4 (1700mhz) while Bell uses Band 5.
I switched over to Wind about a week ago ($29 unlimited talk/text/data) and I can assure you that your Bell Vibrant I9000m will not work on Wind's network (I tried with my Wind SIM card). The frequency bands that Wind uses (AWS 1700/2100) are not compatible with the Bell Vibrant I9000m handset. If you had a T-Mobile Vibrant I9000m however, then it's possible to have it work with Wind's network, but definitely not if you have the Bell SGS.

yea went into the Wind Mobile store today and tried to put 2 sim cards in, a screen came up 'sim pin lock code' for both i dismissed that screen but the phone didn't work.
had the jvo modem running Onecosmic's ICS Port Android 4.0.3 RC2.1

Wind uses AWS and that's why it doesn't work. Our phones are GSM quad band.
Did you take a look at what plans Virgin has?
flash a bell modem.. or... in your dialer type, *#2263#* and under multi band make sure 850 is selected... also you will need Wind mobile APN... furthermore...your phone has to be UNLOCKED to use another SIM card...

yes, "our phones are GSM quad band" (aka 2G, edge...).
in canada, only rogers has 2G towers. wind uses this rogers 2G for roaming, so yes, you can use your bell i9000m with wind... but only for roaming on 2G.
and no, you can not just "flash a different" modem to make this work.
and no, wind does not use CDMA.
thus, short answer, don't use bell's i9000m on wind.

you can try looking for "t959" (t-mobile version of galaxy s) on ebay. I see quite a few used ones around $200 + ~$20 shipping (Canada), which is probably around the same amount that you'll be able to sell your i9000m for.

Hello everyone! I am trying to switch over to Straight Talk because my current carrier, nTelos, has been bought by Shentel and I was told that my current phone could not be used on the new network. Even though nTelos goes off of both the Sprint and Verizon network, my phone will not be able to use the new network that is owned by Sprint. (Which honestly confuses me since my phone has been running off the nTelos, Sprint, and Verizon networks just fine.)
Anyways, I was wondering if it was possible to use the AT&T or T-Mobile sim cards that come with the Straight Talk activation kit. I am wondering because AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon all use 1900MHz on band 2 for LTE. Also, the AT&T and T-Mobile variants have some of the same LTE bands as the nTelos variant. So, is it possible or should I just stick to the Verizon sim card that came with the activation kit?
Never mind. I can't get any of the sim cards in the kit to work with the phone.
